Last night I ended up having thinkie thoughts about millennials. I find it fascinating that the media and various other sources like the approach of "but why aren't millennials doing/buying/consuming X?"
There is definitely a generational divide going on, but an unwillingness to look at the socio-political climate to try and understand why it might be the case. There have been a ton of essays about the parallels between millennials and the people who lived through the Great Depression and WWII. Growing up during a brutal recession and rising nationalism and ongoing international conflicts (the war in Afghanistan hit 18 years already) affects people.
And that's not even starting on the economic disaster that has been left to us. The concept that we don't spend money because We. Don't. Have. It. seems alien to those charming clickbait writers.
But what really hit me is that there is an element of manipulation at play. The suppliers want to sell to millennials, but how can they be sure millennials will buy their product? What can they do to encourage and foster interest and make sure they will profit?
And so, they start regurgitating the things we loved as kids: Disney live-action remakes, new Star Wars films, reboots of shows that millennials grew up with (Shera, Thundercats, Voltron to name but a few), movie reboots (Ghostbusters, The Mummy). That's what millennials want, right? The thing they love? Only newer? And shinier?
I get the feeling that the millenial jaded cynicism is seen as a difficult Mood to market to, so nostalgia has become their primary weapon. Remember a time when you loved that thing! Here's that thing for you again! You can love it again! Also, now with 1000% more merchandise! Please give us your hard-earned money!
In conclusion, these are the things I think about while trying to get to sleep.
