No joke I was convinced early on that Laios & the party were making like a huuuuge leap in assuming that Thistle was the Lunatic Magician TM like guys you can't just go accusing every random person you find in a living painting of being the manager. Alas... he was, in fact, the manager.

I think Thistle is very interesting and a great foil to Marcille, which I looove. They are both magic elf(-ish) advisors, they both get caught up in wanting to help the people around them live longer, they both become dungeon lords in pursuit of that... I think Thistle's story as it is works well for the narrative and I don't necessarily think he was underutilized exactly, but it is a little hard not to want A Bit More sometimes. Even if I do think it would be hard to add that more in without sacrificing some of the pacing overall :')

Favorite moment

I was initially going to say the ending for them, because I do love it, but you know what? I've got a more interesting answer. My favorite Thistle scene is.... this:

This fundamentally changes the trajectory of the story. In trying to find someone to stop the Winged Lion, Thistle launches Marcille into becoming the next lord of the dungeon. The next victim of the Lion. If Thistle hadn't resurrected Marcille, then the plot would have played out totally differently. She wouldn't have been able to finish unsealing the book. Laios would have been on his own when the canaries came. Would they have just cleaned everything up more easily? Would it instead have become something worse? Would Laios somehow have unsealed the book and become the lore of the dungeon right away?

I dunno. But this action reshaped Marcille's life, and Laios', and so many other people's. And it was done out of a desire to keep fighting. To not give in.

Augh idk. It's good. Their connection is good.

Idea for a story

Thistle & Chimera Laios.

But not just a "Laios gets eaten by the dragon instead," I think it would be cool to explore an AU where for some handwavy magic reason, Laios gets his soul bound up w/ the dragon during Falin's resurrection, and he gets poofed into a dragon form.

There's a note somewhere that says that chimeras start popping up the more the lord of the dungeon starts to lose their hold on things, but having met Laios before might help Thistle eventually realize that something is Off about the dragon. From there... well maybe he starts to ask questions and gives Laios more freedom to actually answer, and things could continue from there as Laios gets enough humanity back to start to understand what's happening, and also Thistle takes more time to question the Lion's plans rather than just continue to act. They'd be stuck together, probably with Laios still under Thistle's control, but maybe as they figure out more of the truth, they'd actually work together? Need to rely on each other? I'd like to see how each of them would deal with that situation...

PLUS then on the flip side I think switching Falin into the group part way through the story (rather than at the start) could be really interesting. So the adventures on that side would be fun too.

umm idk. Is Thistle widely regarded as a Marcille foil? Because if not then why. They are so inchresting. funky little mages.

Hmmm okay so like obviously Thistle & Marcille, but also as seen in my story idea I want to explore more of Thistle & Laios bc their interactions were fun, soo... I'll just say the Dungeon Lord quartet as a whole. I like when people draw art of them all together. Let them bond through shared trauma. And also all of them have tried to kill at least one other person there at some point. It's great. They should go on brunch dates.

They immediately kicked off with an equally chaotic vibe and it's been such a blast all along! Also because Lilly is one among very few able to overpower my brat. It's something I dig so hard because it forces him to tone his shit down sometimes. The way you write is so alive too. DioSthe are my boys and I love them a lot. I sadly don't know everything about them but I still love them a lot. Sthenelus is Diomede's little hypeman and that means SO much to me. They've known each other for a long time and are basically QPPs for a long time. It's a thing where Diomedes doesn't think much of it sadly for a long long time despite still caring about Sthenelus but he doesn't realize how deeply he means to Sthenelus until YEARS later. I sadly don't have many fic ideas for them other than a basic confession and smaller moments throughout.

So like yeah, OdyDio is basically toxic exes because it's funny to me and because of how Odysseus treats Diomedes in the Iliad. They are basically this vine

Odysseus: Remember one time, I liked you? Diomedes: You mean the time when we were teenagers? When we were kissing but then you fucking bit me, called me names, and ran away? Odysseus: GOOD! I don't know if I'll ever write this and if I'll just reference it. But basically, Odysseus and Diomedes FIRST met around 11-13 but didn't hang out as much as they're RIVALS. But had their "kiss" and "romance" when Odysseus was around 17 and Dio around 15-16. Odysseus just became king so he's just traveling just to do shit.

They're chilling but then they somehow get to talking about relationships as Odysseus has never really had one while Diomedes has. I have Odysseus Asexual/demisexual and basically had no relationship ever before because he has high fucking standards and usually gets mean to people who have a crush on him.

To me, Odysseus has always been a hopeless romantic (For Penelope, he plays wedding music when they reunite. their tree bed??? Men were expected to decorate their bedrooms before getting married but Odysseus went ALL FUCKING OUT WHEN HE DIDN'T NEED TO!!!|| How he talks to Penelope and talks about her??? He's canonically super romantic! He's always been a hopeless romantic and it's why he was "picky" about romance/marriage propositions before Penelope. anytime someone had a crush on him, he's not feeling it. He just fucks with them.

He's almost genuinely offended in a way, especially if they have barely spoken. Saying you want to hang out is fine as the friendship he's down for and you're safe as long as you don't flirt with him basically. But flirting or offering something??

A princess is now afraid of her woods because he pranked her to make her think it's haunted. Another young prince got set up related to Palamedes and was chased by geese up a tree. He has a reputation of being a BITCH. Part of the reason why Penelope is so fucking skeptical when he's all like "Please marry me!!! PLEASE!!! I'll do anything!!! I really genuinely want to marry you!!!". it's because of his asshole reputation to people who have crushes on him. He's a hopeless romantic from watching his parents interact and all the stories he's been told.

Irony is Penelope is the same as he is, so she treats him the same way. :'D What goes around comes around.

He often lies and says that Heracles is his favorite myth but Penelope gets him to admit it's actually PSYCHE'S myth that's his favorite. The going through hardships because you're so devoted??? 👀 Because you wish to reunite with your most important person/people??? RINGING ANY BELLS!!!!

ANYWAYS. They start talking and Diomedes talks about being aroace (different terms obviously) and Odysseus is so happy. There's someone out there like him! He always blamed his boar scar injury for why he is the way he is. (Post I made going into that) But now there's someone out there like him!

He already considers Diomedes a good friend/rival at this point so they have a bit of something. It gets to the point where they kiss. Mostly for Odysseus as he's never had one before and Diomedes was like "Well, we can always see if you feel something, and then stop." (he smooch Sthenelus but they have a QPR)

Odysseus is...neutral. About their kiss. This is what people freak out about? (I know Ancient Greece was openly affectionate. This is a mouth kiss and also, let me be dumb) He's just sitting, thinking.

Odysseus: "But...You're supposed to feel something?" Diomedes: Yeah? Kissing means you feel each others lips. It feels nice. Shows you care, you know? Odysseus: No, I mean where is bubbling emotions? What about all the songs and poems? Diomedes, being AroAce, younger, and genuinely not meaning to be insensitive and trying to simply tease: They're just poems, Odysseus. You just feel happy but it's none of the fancy words. I think you're making a big deal about this. I mean your lips are fucking chapped and you're a bad kisser but I still liked it, dude. It was still nice, right?"

Diomedes tries to say it as something playful and just messing around as I have a headcanon that Odysseus bites his lips a LOT. Just out of habit and as a (bad) fidget. But Odysseus is just...upset. This was supposed to be ROMANTIC! >:( Why would you say that?!?! He is embarrassed as this was supposed to be his first romantic kiss. :'(

Odysseus, being a hothead with no impulse control with rejection sensitivity, fucking bites Diomedes. Diomedes is ofc, confused and upset and then they just start fighting. Actually needing to be separated by others.

They don't see each other for a while....

They end up seeing each other again some while later. (probably some sort of competition) Where they apologize... but Odysseus still just... doesn't like Diomedes. Even though he knows HE'S the stupid one. Odysseus is prideful. Diomedes just reminds him of an extremely embarrassing, vulnerable moment where HE screwed up and he hates that..."Anytime I see him, I feel like wanna throw mud at him." Diomedes didn't do anything truly wrong but Odysseus is an unreliable narrator

They see each other again during the Suitors of Helen and Odysseus is kind of nervous what Diomedes will do as "Don't fuck this up for me, Son of Tydeus"

Diomedes is actually nice about it. He's happy for Odysseus. He's actually not too bothered by everything unlike Odysseus who holds grudges forever.

Diomedes: "So uh…dude." Odysseus: "What the fuck do you want? 🙄" Diomedes: "You like that daughter of Icarius, yeah? She's like, a naiad, right?" Odysseus, already clenching his fist in case he has to punch him: "…YEah." Diomedes, realizing he's fucked but continues anyways: "…Do you like her because she has sharp teeth?" Odysseus: "??? Not specifically?? Dude, what the fuck are you on about?" Diomedes: "…Well since you bit me when we kissed I didn't know if you were into it or somethin-" gets decked another fight breaks out between them

They are toxic 🤗 Odysseus is Diomedes' bully most of the time. Shoving him into lockers, gum in hair, He's an ASSHOLE. They kind of care about each other, but it has to be from a distance.

Hello again! I hope you don't mind. What's your opinion on Azure Lion, and the Brotherhood? You said they were a toxic group, can you explain how and why? I am very dense. Also have you watched the newest Monkey King movie? What do you think of it? Are there any part of JTTW or Sun Wukong's story you'd like to see be made into a movie that doesn't get much attention? Not LMK verse of course. I'd like to see Ao Lie, the White Dragon Horse's story get expanded on, especially when the group encounter the Dragon family during their journey. What about you? no, i haven't seen the new Monkey King movie yet T^T i hope to see it soon when i have free time, but uni's began, so i will be busy with assignments T^T goodbye summer vacation :'(

as for what jttw story i'd like to see more of? hmmmmm, idk, though tbh i am very new with any jttw interpretation (my introduction to this story was through OSP, and after seeing the sun&moon poll i decided to check out lmk), so my personal information is still small compared to the people who grew up with the many stories and variations of Journey to the West and its characters.

however, i kind of wanna say Sha Wujing/Sandy? mostly because he does seem like an interesting character (2nd strongest out of the companions if i'm remembering right), and is fairly clever with his fighting (which might be why he gets along with swk a lot). idk, it would be fun to get some background on how he acquired his skull necklace (pretty sure they were enemies of his???? or something idk) and his own motivations for redemption, not to mention he does become a Bodhisattva just like swk and Tripitaka (pretty Pigsy/Zhu Baije doesn't???), so that would be fun to touch on!

moving on now....i actually do like how the fandom just adopted :BD's host and we all affectionately call her Bai He! it's sweet and i like that we all kind of want to see her own recovery of being possessed for like months (or a year idk lmk timeline is weird and funky and no i am not annoyed-) i am a big fan of the "Macky adopts previously possessed child out of solidarity but also she latched onto him first and wouldn't let go so he's kind of stuck with her now :)" it's very fanon but, eh, i'm a sucker for "reluctant dad to protect the smol" characters (prob another reason why i love Pigsy and swk so much lmao).

ALSO, i think her interactions with swk would be so funny (for me) and awkward (for swk) because she's like "thanks for saving the world and me!" and swk like "MHM! uh yeah, sure, np kiddo" bc he did almost kill her (tho he really did try to find a way to not do that) but also Bai He might not even be mad at him for that. (maybe i want her to attempt to befriend him, but swk is just so nervous and feeling a tad guilty so he avoids her but she's a persistent little fucker, maybe i want to a lot, sue me)

idk what her role is now in the show tbh. she could be sidelined now, and we only get cameos of her (s3 ending & s4 special) for the time being just showing her slow recovery (lmk has been doing a "minor/background character development happening behind the scenes" for awhile (DBK fam) so i wouldn't be surprised if we see that with her). but it's possible that she could grow to have some role in s5 or s6 (maybe she's got some leftover LBD powers bc post-possession symptoms, maybe Mr. Hoodie Man wants to use her too bc she was such a great host for LBD, maybe she saw something plot relevant while possessed concerning MK and wants to warn him or his friend??? WHO KNOWS???)

ok.....Brotherhood™️ what are my thoughts on them......

this post is already long as is, and i have class in 30 minutes, oh boy let's go >:3

sO, let try and summarize my thoughts of them before delving in: i think that narratively, the Brotherhood are a great way for establishing who Sun Wukong was pre-jttw as well as giving us access to his history with Macky (THANK FUCKING GOD I WAS SO DESPERATE FOR THEIR BACKSTORY).

the Brotherhood is also a great way to showcase MK's growing similarities with swk and the narrative parallels the two characters have for each other. we already knew swk was trying to mentor MK is a way that was different from how swk lived his life before because, we he's shown, he really does regret his past actions, and wants MK to be a better version, believes MK can be this better version of him. and you can see him trying, but also he fails to really explain WHY his teaching methods are slow and vague sooooooo, uh oh :)

anyway, character-wise.....the Brotherhood is written to be both sympathetic and dislikable. the sympathetic aspect comes with Azure and his Cause™️ because that shows you that "wait a minute...he really did want to do good, but lost sight of it and the harm he was doing along the way." you're supposed to sympathize with him, you're supposed to feel confused about his shaky relationship with swk because "Azure only wanted to do good, yet swk ruined it" <- this is some excellent unreliable narrator shit i love about this show btw

HOWEVER! Azure is not an archetype character (lmk doesn't really do archetypes. okay, they do, BUT it's more of deconstruction of the archetype than really using an archetype, you feel me?) he is a character who is deeply flawed. he is idealistic and vain (yes, yes he is vain bc have you seen this lion????) Azure built up swk on a pedestal of what a true role model king should look like (nevermind that swk's kingdom was on a island and his subjects were just monkeys, meaning his reign was fairly small compared to Heaven, therefore more manageable BUT I DIGRESS)

basically, Azure placed so much admiration and all his ideal onto swk, who was frankly a lot younger than the celestial lion being that he would have only recently met him post-Havoc & he was only about 500-600 years old by then (maybe????), and saw the monkey more as a perfect weapon to use to defeat the Jade Emperor and start a new, "more compassionate" era.

ok, and this is just me speaking, but, Azure, honey, if you really wanted to help restart Heaven into helping out the poor humans, instead of the very flawed bureaucracy you argued against.....maybe, don't continue on with a monarchy????? idk, maybe it's the Western influence talking but Azure, if you hate the celestial lords and emperor so much, maybe create a system that DOESN'T favor the lords and emperor????? break the whole system apart and create something new???? course you didn't think that far (which was eloquently shown in the special) so i'm honestly not surprised that your mission failed so many times

anyway, the dislikable aspect! Peng is a wonderful character for this section! so, when meeting Azure, you may come to a couple conclusions: wow a pretty lion! is he trustworthy? well, he seems to really want to help out.....damn he's got quite the silvertongue there, very convincing and great orator....you seem very upset about whatever swk did to you, huh? but meeting Peng you get: ooooh pretty bird man! oh, they're kind of a bitch, aren't they? yeah, still a bitch (and depending on the viewer, bitch can be affectionate or derogatory)

but yeah, so Peng, one of Azure's brother trio who worked with him in the Celestial Court and views him as the leader of the Brotherhood rather than swk (actually, none of the brotherhood members even consider swk their leader, except Azure and maybe Macky (but that might be bc Macky does not fucking care about the brotherhood member BUT swk) bc the rest view swk as their prized weapon)

Peng is really the character that starts to make you reconsider Azure's trustworthiness because my god is this bird the most condescending and bitchiest of friends. they are that toxic friend, okay? it was because of Peng that i clocked in "oh, ok, this is high school toxicity 101, got it" lol

anyway, Peng does not really seem to care that much for...the Cause™️ like Azure and Yellow Tusk do. rather, they seem to just stick around mostly because Azure and Yellow Tusk are their brothers and that's it. i guess props for staying loyal??? but still, Peng is the character that gives us the first crack into Azure's worthy crusade because their character will resort to violence first, turns on anyone who slightly disagrees with Azure's methods (*cough cough* Mac *cough cough*) or, hm, let's say....surrenders to the Jade Emperor, is missing for 500 years, then miraculously is freed and is working with a Buddhist monk?

so yeah, uh running out of time but to sum up: Azure and the brotherhood were never really "friends" they were colleagues who though they all had a common goal to defeat Heaven but their loyalty was built on ideals and pedestals and flaky attitudes which was why Mac was never comfortable around them, why DBK stopped interacting with them after the war, and WHY swk was so easily pointed as a traitor and a villain by the Camelhead Trio.

do you have any tips for making something magical girly-story wise? I wanna make a magical girl story but seeing what people do and don't consider magical girl stories makes me worried I'm gonna mess something up. I really like your magical girl stuff, so if you have any advice, thank you! and in general I hope you have a nice day!

Familiarize yourself more w the genre really, that's like where a lot of ppl end up going wrong where they don't... interact with mg beyond Sailor Moon and even then, they also haven't really watched Sailor Moon recently. Like if Sailor Moon is your jam you gotta go and refresh your memory on the themes and story beats. But also watching multiple types of shows to see what the stories have in common beyond "they transform" because henshin heroes are a whole separate thing that encompasses more than just MG lol

Like a lot of people have the idea that all MG is similar in tone to just the most lighthearted and goofy moments of the silliest Precure seasons, even if they never actually watched Precure, which is why we have so many people r consistently surprised that Sailor Moon had any kind of stakes in it lol

Or same with Madoka which is an even worse scenario imo because its a MG series written by someone who wasn't familiar with the genre either, it's like copying someone's math exam when math is that persons worst subject. You're not gonna understand how they got the right answer or how they messed up on the wrong ones yk?

I think watching some more "classic" shows is a good way to get an idea of how the genre started out, if you want some magic idols you should be more familiar with Creamy Mami at least a little, but the ~classics~ aren't like the end all be all of the genre lol. And I think also being more familiar with influencial non-mg franchises is a good thing... like, henshin heroes is where I'm most invested and a lot of MG warriors are basically Girl Sentai. but it's not just Sentai that has had any kind of influence on that sub-genre, like. the Sentai Formula for fights is generally, we get a funky themed general who fucks everything up for the episode, the heroes defeat him, and then he gets really big and the heroes use their mech to defeat him for good.

Some MG has the like ridiculous themed kaijin villains and MOTW, like SM and Wedding Peach and early Precure definitely has a more sentai-like vibe.

but they don't do the "get big and die from being blown up by a mech" thing in mg lol. But then some shows have the girls basically fighting kaiju which feels more like it's taking cues from Ultraman to me.

And some seasons like Heartcatch and Happiness Charge have these like, little underling villains that give "Kamen Rider Grunt"

Straight up these are just the same type of guy.

I don't think watching a ton of Godzilla films will teach you the hidden intricacies of the MG genre but it will give you an idea of what a lot of writers probably have in mind when they make up monsters lol

Knowing how the actual genre works FIRST though, is going to do way better for people getting any kind of "magical girl vibes" from your story. a lot of these stories don't feel like MG bc the writers don't know the genre, and I feel like that's also how US stories end up just so different (not necesarily in a bad way), or only ever referencing SM. VS like, Italy where these stories were way more consistently available and easily accessible. Compare like, She-ra and Star Vs to like, Winx and WITCH lmao. like, in the US only the nerdiest of nerd girls were out here watching mermaid melody. we only got a handful of shows and half them never got finished lmao

2022 TAZ Fic Recs!!

There has been so many bangers I've read this year, oh my goddd. This list is mainly just me going through my bookmarks to share everything that's on them, because other people deserve to see them. I will not be @-ing every author, because honestly, I don't know if all of them have Tumblrs or what their usernames are if they do sldfsdf. But they'll be linked with the story!

Fics with a black heart emoji (🖤) in front of them have content warnings that really need to be adhered. I'm taking warnings from what I remember and what is in the tags of the story already. If I need to add anything else, let me know.

On the Deck of the Starblaster by papergardener - The Starblaster crew takes a well-deserved break in the sun. It's so soft that it makes my heart kinda ache, tbh! Could not recommend more.

parlay, as a gamble by anistarrose - Lucretia doesn't erase the concept of Parley as well as she meant to and Merle reaches out to the Red Robe. This one is beautifully heartbreaking and hilarious, I'm in love with it.

🖤 Symptoms by The_Fanfic_Train - The crew has defeated the Hunger and now they must through the mortifying ordeal of healing. This one got me real good, ngl. It shows so much growth and strength and adds a very realistic side to the characters that I very much enjoyed reading.

Warning for suicidal tendencies, negative thoughts, and self-destructive behaviors, and mentions of blood.

Who Have You Become In The Wake of All That's Happened? by ArtsyRiv - Magnus and his experiences with his hair and the styling of those around him. As someone who has also written an entire fic about hair, this is so beautiful. It captures the feelings connected to hair presentation so, so well and, to top it all off, T4T Magnulia, hell yeah.

🖤 I Tried To Do The Best That I Could by ArtsyRiv - Lucretia's been having nightmares in the wake of the Redaction. She's not coping with it well. This story is so beautifully written and pulls you along with all the feelings and emotions mixed in. It's soul-destroying but in a beautiful way.

Warning for self-harm, EDNOS/Eating disorders, some suicidal ideation, and an emetophobia warning.

Caves and Cypress by crowsong - In the simplest of terms, a character study of Barry between the end of Stolen Century and the beginning of Here There Be Gerblins. It's amazingly complex and so well thought out. It tossed me between angst and yearning so quickly that all my emotions jumbled up and came out as tears. There are some fun Barry and Lucretia interactions in here, as well as some very fun Barry and Kravitz interactions.

it's my party and I'll mope if I want to by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit - Angus and Lucretia make Taako a birthday cake. It's fun and funky and fresh, with a very nice little dash of angst sprinkled in. I adore it in every way.

Someone I Have Loved, But Never Known by anistarrose - A fucking fantastic AU of Barry and Lup also being voidfished and remembering their married but don't remember it's too each other. It's hilarious and so in character, I could not recommend it more.

I Saw Seven Bounties by umbraastaff (jothending) - Kravitz took all seven bounties because things like this usually come as package deals. He soon realizes he's sorely mistaken. This one is so fun. I have so many thoughts about Barry and Kravitz's interactions between Stolen Century and HTBG's and this fulfills like, half of them at least. The writing style is so charming and nice, I very highly suggest you read it.

leaving, as an injustice by anistarrose - Another absolute banger by Rose. Sort of a spiritual successor to "parley, as a gamble" further up the list, this is another fantastic Merle fic. With Mavis as the main character, we get to see Merle in a light that not a lot of people choose to write about. It's fantastic and deep and beautiful, an amazing read.

Some of my best friends are liches by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit - So, so, so good. What if Lup had gotten out of the umbrastaff really early? What if they had to deal with two Red Robes instead of one? Everything Reese writes is delightful and zesty, but I have a special place in my heart for this one.

Scamming me, scamming you by Noodyl - Taako thinks he's flirting with Kravitz. Kravitz thinks he's being scammed (and he's kinda loving it?). This is so hilarious and I love the way Noodyl writes Kravitz, it's so very good. A perfect fun fic to wipe away all your sorrows.

🖤 Immortal Mortality by vacuumfluorescentdisplay - I just discovered this author and I'm going wild about them, just a little. This is such a good take on various deaths throughout the Stolen Century. It's so lived-in and refreshing to read and it brings a lot of humanity to the Starblaster crew, dealing with the most living-being-oriented problem: Death. Fantastic read and fantastic writing.

Warning for character death, including drowning and extreme hypothermia. There are also blood mentions and injury descriptions.

unreliable narrator by owlinaminor - An older fic but such a powerful one. It shares Lucretia's POV throughout her entire life up until just after Story and Song. It has given me a new way to view Lucretia and the way I write her and is such an impactful story. The writing style is fantastic and beautiful, I cannot recommend this more.

but the strange lights in the sky were shining by anistarrose - Barry knows things are off but he can't pinpoint why. This one so perfectly captures the feeling of offness from being in a new world but not being able to remember how or why you got there. It's very quick-paced and really captures you in the moment of it all. So good.

Live Like This by Grabbingatpowerandkissingit - Reese has once again taken an already brilliant AU idea (Tuck Everlasting-based AU, my beloved) and made it amazing. Barry's reoccurring encounters at the Fair and his life in between. It's an amazing story and so lived-in and thought-out. It's so very good.

Offworld by vacuumfluorescentdisplay - Last but certainly not least, this masterpiece. I just finished reading this the day I'm writing this and it's incredible. Barry is trying to escape his (criminal) pass and Taako and Lup are just trying to stay alive. This story follows their trip and their slow fall into trust. Tom is so good at world-building and making the characters feel multi-dimensional. The world(s) here are fantastically built and the storyline is even better. Again, I would very highly recommend it.

And that's it!! This got a little long but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anyone on my list sldkfsdf. Shout out to all these amazing authors and all the ficlets I've been seeing all over my dash. There's so much life and love in this fandom and I adore reading every single thing I come across.

What if the boom team got trapped in the movie universe?

ah very interesting 

 I’m gonna say for this that the boom crew haven’t met the Scu characters yet.

Like maybe Eggman did a thing during a battle and accidentally brought him, Orbot and Cubot and Team sonic to the movie universe.

At first they find it so weird because; there’s only humans

Ooh and early on there’s a massive Sticks freak out because someone in green hills sees them and they’re only slightly fazed and go up to them saying something like “oh are you more of Sonic’s alien friends?” And now Sticks is convinced Scu Sonic is conspiring with aliens.

But her reaction when she learns that Scu Sonic actively refers to himself as an alien is priceless.

G.U.N are loosing their minds. It was bad enough when one super powered alien child appeared then two more and a bunch of mystical reality warping jewels  appeared. and now theres alternate dimensions getting involved too.

Tom and Maddie just taking everything in stride like: yep this is our life now

The dynamic I’m picturing the boom crew having with the scu crew is: the cool cousins that stay over now and again.

 But as for more specific dynamic ideas

Orbot and cubot I need Orbot and Cubot to meet unit the drone. These three funky litttle robot dudes are great. It’s not uncommon to see the three bots following after Maddie or Tom like little ducklings. The scu boys love Orbot and cubot and think they’re so funny and sweet and Orbot and cubot are so happy because everyone’s being nice to them. They tried to speak to Crazy Carl at some point, the poor bots got terrified out of their minds.

Eggman Every now and again Eggman will try and do something villainous but utterly fail or have it be hilariously petty. I don’t know why but I can see him liking Tom and wanting to be his friend and Tom being in a constant state of ??? Around him. And I can see him hanging around wade for some reason.

Boom Knuckles Remember the boom episode where knuckles tries to find a family? (Knuck, knuck who’s there?) well he’s loving spending time with the family. And he admires Maddie a lot so he’s constantly trying to make her proud and impress her and then Scu knuckles keeps trying to one up him because he “must make mother proud” Another thing i’m thinking about Boom Knuckles and Wade interacting. The level of dumbass would be incomprehensible to those around them. But even if no one knows what they’re on about the two of them are getting along great

Boom tails: he is so shocked to learn the scu boys share a room and don’t go nuts in each other’s presence. Scu tails gets his help to try to teach wade basic mechanics. It does not work and now all three are banned from using power tools (wades is permanet the tails’ is not) 

Boom sonic: he’s going Stir crazy, hes not having any battles and this calm suburban day to day is driving him nuts. He’s challenged Scu sonic to many, many races. Scu Knuckles offered to spar with him but after Scu Knuckles under estimated boom sonics strength and hit him all the way across the yard he decided he will not be doing that again. He once found Scu tails building something and when he asked what it was the answer he got (definitely not strong enough to destroy a tank) made him live in fear of the tiny fox.

Amy: my first thought was her and Maddie calmly sipping tea while utter chaos happens around them. Aww but her and jojo the two of them would be so sweet together, Amy creating a make shift fuzzy puppy set and teaching her how to play, jojo Colouring with her and Amy taking in every word. Just the two of them being adorable. All this makes Rachel love Amy and the two of them also get on great, the two of them area force to be reckoned with when mad. Ooh I just remembered Amy adopted bea the bee bot, she’ll definitely approve of unit.

Sticks: she and Crazy Carl end up uncovering so many secrets together. If Rachel’s side of the family is over she has to be restrained so she doesn’t remove Randall’s head.

Ok but one absolute necessity is a baseball game. After all it’s no the scu with out baseball.

It’s boom team vs wachowskis 

Amy uses her hammer.

Boom Knuckles sees Scu knuckles punch the ball and copies him.

There where many lost balls and broken bats that day.

Orbot and cubot try their best

Someone gets hit in the face by an extreme speed ball

The scu provide commentary (aka narration) for the game

Actually wait, unit can’t really play so he ends up commentating most of the game by via poetry 

There’s like a 20 minute stretch where he’s only speaking in haiku.

✨How did you come up with the OC’s name?

Haunt, like most of my ocs, bounced around between a few different names before I settled on one. I wanted something that would reflect his powers and ghostly appearance, though, and settled on Haunt!

🌼  - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)

He's 23!

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?

Every villain he's ever met. He's deeply infatuated with power and confidence and the people who wield it.

🍕  - What is their favorite food?

He's eaten nothing but raw fish for his entire life.

💼  - What do they do for a living?

Haunt is the sole resident of a magically-protected sunken city. He's the heir of an extinct royal bloodline that ruled a kingdom that no longer exists. He's an aspiring henchman, though. He wants to do villainy and uphold the family legacy, but doesn't have the backbone to take charge.

Literally. No bones.

🎹  - Do they have any hobbies?

He does magic and sinks ships for fun.

🎯  -What do they do best?

He's an excellent mage, but an even better powerhouse. He has incredible strength, and underwater he's fast and deadly ... though he doesn't really utilize his capabilities well.

🥊  -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do?

He loves people-watching. It's his favourite thing in the world. He'll find a person to fixate on and watch every video, memorize every photo, learn every mannerism. He idolizes people like Doctor Eggman, and practices his own grand villain monologues in the mirror sometimes. Aside from that, he enjoys reading - hard to do underwater, though.

He hates cleaning, and feels awkward and nervous with any sort of social interaction. Talking to people is difficult, and impressing them even more so. He wilts under attention.

❤️  - What is one of your OC’s best memories?

The first time he conjured a little ball of light underwater. It was his first spell, and kickstarted his passion for magic.

✂️   - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

Every day he endures the terrors. It isn't so much one solid memory so much as the realization that he was alone, always had been alone, and unless he made a name for himself, he always would be alone.

Though his first trip to the surface is a close second. The sun is a deadly laser.

🧊  - Is their current design the first one?

Yes! He's gone through very minor palette tweaks but that's it.

🍀  - What originally inspired the OC?

I wanted to make a Mobian who was a funky animal you don't see a lot! Mammals are obviously a bit cuter and more appealing, but I think the aquatics are vastly underrated. And you ever seen that oil rig camera footage of a bigfin squid? They're terrifying.

🌂  - What genre do they belong in?

Haunt is the sometimes-useless antagonist in a horror/comedy. He's a nightmare of the deep ... and he cries like a baby if he has to endure direct sunlight.

💚  -What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?

Haunt's a cis man (he/him) and he's gay!

🙌  - How many siblings does your OC have?

None! Only child.

🍎  - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

He never met his father, and his mother is a ghost who haunts a building in the city, so that's ... awkward. She raves about his destiny and bringing death to the surface-dwellers and he's just like "what in the sea's name art thou talking about, spectre. nay. i seek the tome behind ye, be all. silence thy beak."

🧠  - What do you like most about the OC?

He's just kind of ... pathetic. Like, he's wildly capable of so much and too pathetic to be a real threat unless utilized by someone bolder. It gives him a lot of interesting dynamic potential with whatever villain I team him up with.

✏️  - How often do you draw/write about the OC?

Haunt's a roleplay character sooo semi-often. But not too often! I need to draw him more, he's a funny little guy.

💎  - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?

No I don't like killing OCs in general and Haunt's my little guy!

💀  - Does your OC have any phobias?

The sun. Dry air. Fire. He thinks skeletons are gross and scary. Afraid of ghosts, VERY haunted.

🍩  -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival?

Just about every 'good guy' he meets, but entirely one-sidedly. He wants to be someone's nemesis sooo badly but no one takes him seriously.

🎓  - How long have you had the OC?

Not long at all! He's only had a finalized design for, like, two months.

OTHER:

He speaks in some bizarre approximation of Olde English. He rarely walks on his feet, preferring to walk on his tentacles. Same with picking things up. His hands are near-exclusively used for spellwork. He doesn't have a set amount of tentacles, either. He only blinks when it's funny. When casting spells, he writes runes in ink. Squid ink. It's his own tears. He's just in general a wet, boneless freak. He's TINY, under three feet tall, but his tentacles can extend to nearly any length and he tends to match the height of or tower over anyone he meets. If your character's a villain, assume he would do anything to impress them.

I really want to try drawing a picture or two for every matchup Haunt makes it to, but if that doesn't happen and you still have thoughts as to how that'd work out, lemme know ... I think abt him a normal amount and everyone's OCs I've seen are SO cute so far

not gonna lie felt bad for Dylan in DI for a short time however it turned into boo fucking hoo very quick

it was so why not focus on Maria? why not focus on Jill (it makes no sense Jill charging in recklessly at the start Leon turns up and she lets him take charge)

can't wait to rewatch it whenever that maybe (got the dvd wrong region code of fucking course and i don't know how to make dvd do it)

Okay. After watching the movie several times, I definitely feel more equipped to answer this question (which I own the blu-ray of but am watching totally legally online in another place when I don't want to set up the dvd/blu-ray player).

When Death Island dropped, and everyone was throbbing over Leon, I was annoyed by many of the missed opportunities to make the movie entertaining in order to focus on "realism" like they have been with the remakes and with Inifinite Darkness. Yet, the biggest dropping of the ball was with Jill Valentine, and we gotta talk about Jill so that we can talk about why Dylan sucks ass fails as a character foil to her. However, let's do a little definition first so we're on the same page.

The narrative purpose of a character foil is that when these two characters are on screen interacting with each other, their differences become highlighted. You got Romeo and Mercutio, Betty and Veronica, Chris and Wesker, these characters are foils that we can easily recognize without putting any real thought behind it. We can clock their motivations and the patterns they execute to reach their goals and see where all those little funky lines cross. They can be friends, antagonists, or enemies, but their purpose is to bring out the other characters good and bad traits to deepen our understanding of them.

Jill Valentine is a character that is an active player. She doesn't let things passively happen to her. She gets shit done. She's very hands on about everything. We see it in Resident Evil 1 where you play as her route, and if you play Chris' route the only thing holding this woman back is the cell Wesker trapped her in wherein she has no tools to utilize whatsoever. We see it in Resident Evil 3 where Carlos often takes a backseat to Jill pushing the narrative forward until she's infected and needs help only to pick up where she leaves off as soon as she gets that cure. We see it in the Lost in Nightmares DLC where she's keeping pace with another active character, Chris, and ends the fight by sacrificing herself. In Resident Evil 5 where she's just been saved from mind control, she's actively yelling and shoving at Chris to leave her and save the world when Chris doesn't want to after getting her back. We see it in all of Revelations 1 in juxtaposition to Chris' route. Jill is our Ripley in Alien , she is our Sarah Conner in Terminator, and so on.

Dylan Blake is a passive character. Death Island showcased this to us much more heavy handed than they needed to, but we got the picture. He accepts orders to evacuate important people and kill civilians warily but with no real fight behind it. He cried out on the ground when his friend killed the rest of their infected teammates after failing to wrestle the gun away. Doesn't get up and try again. He's active in saving himself after his friend got infected, but that's it. He hires people to kidnap a guy to build robots for him. It's heavily implied the virus in the bots is one of Glenn Arias' weapons meaning he didn't even make the damn thing. He doesn't commit to suicide and hasn't for 17 years because Russian Roulette absolves him of any fault when he fails. (Something they stole from the movie Bullet Train btw.) He could've shot Claire to teach Jill a lesson, but that decision would be too active for his character. He talks about cleaning the slate with no plans to stick around to see if the slate gets cleaned. Even as a giant bloody poopoo monster he's just swinging his body around listlessly until things break. Unlike every other antagonist or villain we've had up to this point, Dylan is the most hands off when it comes to this schtick. He is the guy that says "I'm going to do this thing, but whatever happens next is out of my hands" as if he's not responsible for glassware breaking after snatching away the tablecloth.

On a surface level, you'd think after both of them went through Raccoon City that Jill and Dylan are perfect foils of each other. Which they would be if Jill wasn't immediately shuffled into the passive role herself as soon as Leon came on screen. Examples of this? Well, we can watch the movie together, and I'll point them out scene by scene, but for the sake of answering your question here I'll try and bullet point them. Of which I will also be listing things people have already complained about because they all take place in Alcatraz.

-Why does Jill keeps losing/not using her gun?

-Jill struggles with zombies the same as others despite enhanced strength and non-existent aging from the virus.

-Jill struggles with lickers.

-Jill doesn't shoot Dylan during his monologue.

-Jill doesn't shoot or fight Maria during Dylan's monologue.

-Jill doesn't shoot Dylan during his second monologue before he kills himself despite seeing the gun he holds that injects viruses.

-Jill is responsible for hand flare to get Dylan's attention, not driving the car or giving her the big gun. She has to yell at him when his mind is basically not even there anymore.

-Jill has the bag of bombs that is supposed to off him and drops it after setting off one under water.

"But Jill is fighting in those scenes." Yeah, but Leon has to save her ass by giving her a gun. Leon has to kill all the lickers. Leon has to info dump about Alcatraz, a place the BSAA should've collected intel on like they always do before missions. A place Jill would've researched herself if she were allowed to be herself. Leon had to give her the opportunity to run from Maria. Jill just yells at Dylan for most of his nonsense even when he loses and is trying to run away as a giant bloodied poopoo monster. Is this the behavior of an active character after we see her at the start go into that house by herself to look for civilians, and later deny Chris his friendship speech in the shooting range? Is this highlighting her normally active traits against Dylan, a person who just lets things happen around him? Short answer: No. Long answer: Hell fucking no. If Jill is not doing the same thing as everyone else in the scene, her actions are reduced to passiveness matching Dylan's and not contrasting them! They don't even put Dylan into more active positions when Jill is made passive, so what the fuck is the point of this guy?! We hate him. That wasn't hard to do. Where's the rest of it? Where is the rest-?!?!?!

Listen, I'm not saying Jill needed to shoot Claire to inhibit her and possibly buy the scientist more alive time, but I am saying Jill needed to be firing at someone because it's not like Dylan would've handed her the cure if she kept him alive. Plus, Rebecca was already making a cure. So-?!?!? It's not like Dylan wouldn't have snapped his fingers sooner to make Maria act had Jill first gotten a good shot in his kneecap. If we want to highlight anything, why isn't Jill's brash actions leading to screw ups in contrast to Dylan's passive actions showing how he's winning and thus strengthening his spiel about all of them being pawns? I'm not expecting the world from a CGI Resident Evil movie. I know the quality to expect, but we have done better before this. I was more satisfied with Rebecca doing her smart thing in Vendetta despite the weird wedding dress scene of her on the table. I was more satisfied with Ada doing her spy thing in Damnation. I was more satisfied with Claire doing her thing in the first 20 minutes of Degeneration. But Death Island? For Jill? As a summation?

Jill Valentine has been used and abused by Wesker. She's been away from the BSAA for 6 years. She's been tossed aside by Capcom game wise. And in what's supposed to be the movie about her getting back on her feet, she gets sidelined because the director and writer were too busy furiously jerking off Leon Scott Kennedy to give her more than the bare minimum script wise in order to "achieve this goal". They didn't achieve the goal by the way. The little fist bump between Chris and Jill was not fucking earned in the slightest.

However if you truly want to know how dirty they did her overall, I can show you by simply comparing her famous rail gun scene depiction. In the original Resident Evil 3, the rail gun was a gigantic machine no one could lift unless they were a giant. For the Resident Evil 3 Remake, they changed it to something she can lift. In Death Island, they decided to do a callback to that rail gun from the Resident Evil 3 Remake as it's her pivotal final fight against Nemesis. They had her turn this iconic weapon, her iconic weapon, against Dylan.

Now anon, look at this big ass rail gun she gets in the Resident Evil 3 Remake where she barely flinches with the recoil. This is 1998. She is not buffed up by the T-Virus. It's a strap metaphor. This gun is two Jill's long, it's heavy as shit, and the camera angles tell us how hefty it is when we play the game.

Now, look at this fucking peashooter they have her struggling to heft around in Death Island. This is shorter than her. You could argue that because it relies on a generator and is portable, it's made of a heavier metal than the one on the charger in the Remake. It's still bullshit that she gets thrown back by the recoil considering she's buffed up from that T-Virus that doesn't let her age compared to how little she struggled with a bigger gun with a stronger recoil in the Remake.

Things that would've fixed this movie? Stop giving Leon all the lines. Make Jill the one that has clever thinking with the gasoline in exchange for Leon finding their exit out of the tunnels. Make Jill fight Maria during Dylan's monologue to emphasize that she's wasting time while her friend's are dying, thus making her take action role look futile compared to Dylan's passivity OR at least have her try to shoot and it fails by her gun jamming. Give Jill her gun back with one bullet in it after Maria wins the fight to then try and make her choose to kill Claire. Let her fire it once at someone and it do nothing. Liven up that Russian Roulette motif. Let the running away be her choice, not something Leon has to give her the opportunity to take. Let Jill have one flashback to any other fucking game which highlights how her usual method of decision making led her to failure before the Dylan showdown. Let her shoot Dylan as he shoots himself reiterating the foil contrast before the last big fight. Cut Leon and Chris' quirky little dialogue so Jill can have several more lines that would make the final shout at Dylan more hard hitting.

As for Maria, when we roll back that footage in Vendetta, she should've been beating the shit out of Chris in Death Island for killing Diego. It could've made the movie better with any of my changes of Jill VS Dylan by adding Chris VS Maria since Chris and Jill always do everything together.

Ghosty Story

A vast mansion suddenly appears 20 yards in front of the three, blocking their view of everything except a few thin-branched trees and the sky. It looks to be composed of sections from several different eras. The main and oldest section of the house, made of stone and three stories tall. To the left are two segments, one is red with pointed spokes sticking up from the top corners, has long, thin windows, and is two stories tall. The leftmost section is a one story, suburban looking house with a 1920s geometric art deco design. On the right branch, there are two one story sections of the house. One was long, had random designs made with spray paint, some hanging plants, and a small porch with a triangular and colorful funky chair. The last, on the right, was the smallest of them all. It was off-white and drab, having none of the defining characteristics that the other sections have.

“Woah,” They all say simultaneously, stunned with astonishment.

“We found it!” Says Alex, almost shaking from excitement, “What do ya think, Ghost Squad?”

“It’s an architectural marvel,” Will says, awe shining in their eyes, “Athena would be proud!”

Sam rolls her eyes, “I still think you’re both way too into this but I’m glad you're excited.”

“Look at the differing sections,” says Will, almost to themself. “People must have continuously built their own style of house connected to the structures that were already there, creating what looks like a mismatched set.”

“Dude,” says Alex, sighing, “we just got here and you’re already insulting the place?”

“Not insulting, observing. There’s a difference,” Will retorts.

“So, are you guys gonna argue about architecture or are we gonna go inside?” interjects Sam.

“Halt!” 

Suddenly, there was a man standing on the threshold of the stone section. He was dressed in chainmail armor with a red cape and looked a little translucent.

“Who goes there and dares to wander upon King Arthur’s land?” he says.

“Oh hush, Geoffrey. We must greet our guests, politely,” says a new person, who passes through the door and strolls gradually to the knight’s side. She was dressed in a pale yellow Victorian gown that was tailored to perfection. She also has the same slight translucent look that Geoffrey has. “Hello there, I’m Alice, this is Sir Geoffrey, and there are others inside. Who are you?”

Throughout the entire interaction, the three had been stunned into silence. None of them knew what to say to these people that just proved them correct about the existence of the paranormal and ghosts, a feat none of them thought they would ever achieve. 

“Right, um, I-I’m Alex. The tall one is Sam and the taller one is Will,” stutters Alex, “are you.. ghosts? I’m just guessing because of the slightly transparent-”

“Translucent,” corrects Sam.

“Er- yeah, translucent look and walking through the closed door,” stammered Alex, glaring at her.

Suddenly, another ghost appears, wearing a plaid shirt over a t-shirt, leopard print pants, and a backwards hat. “You betcha, dude. The ghosties of The Hallow hang here,” he says, “I’m Argyle, yo. Also Alice,” he says in a stage whisper, “the others are listening from the other side of the door.”

“The Hallow?” inquires Will.

Sir Geoffrey clears his throat and gestures behind the group, towards the forest. “The Hallow is our section of these trees, extending far beyond this residence. Many ghosts live in the Hallow, but few travel to the residence often.”

Alice clasped her hands together. “Now, would our guests like to come inside and make themselves at home?”

“Yes!” Alex exclaimed, almost shaking with excitement and ready to open the door.

Sam opened the door, heavy from many years of disuse. Alex raced inside, while Will and Sam entered cautiously. As they looked around, they all stopped and stared in astonishment.

The inside of the building is just as mesmerizing as the outside, if not a little messy. It is made from stone and wood with unlit torches on the columns of the walls. There are great tapestries hanging from the ceiling and walls. They are red with a yellow dragon, its head curled towards its body and its wings flared. Spanning over the entire ceiling is a tremendous mural, using colors that don’t seem possible. However, its colors have faded over the years since it was painted. Towards the right side of the room, there are many long wooden tables, some with cups and plates.

Will was the first to speak, “this building alone is amazing. I wonder what those tapestries are.”

“Those are “The Pendragon Crest” that Geoffrey rambles about. He’ll go on about them for days if you let him,” says a new voice, a new ghost. “Hey there, newbie livings! I’m Emma, former waitress, always getting less than I deserve,  but so is the life. Or the death I guess.”

Oh stop, Em. You’re gonna make them sad, if they aren’t already. I mean, someone here let them see us,” the next and last ghost introduced herself. “I’m Lilly, but who let you rascals in here?” Lilly has a black dress with gold geometric designs, with thin, black strings hanging from the asymmetrical hem and her gloves that reach past her elbow.

“Council of Ghosts”

“What do we do with them?” Geoffrey glances around the room, then returns to everyone’s gaze. 

The ghosts are debating what to do with the three in a separate room. The room has more crests and three large tables making a “u” shape. Geoffrey is neutral on the whole situation, calming down after he realized the three aren’t a threat.

“Well it would be fun for them to stay a little longer. Maybe they could visit us, or stay here. Water the plants, maybe,” Argyle is excited about having new friends but he isn’t thinking past that aspect of keeping them there.

“No.” Alice’s tone is unwavering.

“Why not? They have free will.” Lilly questions, genuinely confused.

“So did we. But when we lived, we chose to stay, and now we’re stuck in this haunted house forever!” Emma almost yelled, having strong opinions about this topic.

“What about having new people around? Y’all are getting boring.” Argyle argues, indignantly. 

“Apart from your view of us, that would be swell.” Alice says sarcastically at first, then controlling her tone, she says, “However, we cannot take these living people and have them live with us ghosts.” 

“Why not? We all made that choice before.” Lilly disagrees, still unsure why they aren’t letting the three do what they want to do. They are free. They can come and go at will.

“All of us had nowhere else to go. They have families and friends and.. each other. We need to get them out. This is about saving them, not us. We never left. Do you think they will?” Emma says, her tone wavering as tears well up in her eyes.

“Will they listen?” Alice says, speaking softly for the first time since entering the room.

“I don’t know.” Emma admits.

“It’s time to call a vote. We have discussed this and now have to make a choice. But take into account that we are not the only ones in these woods.” Geoffrey interjects, ready to end this meeting and relax. He really does have better things to do than this.

“Do we convince them to leave or give them the choice to stay?”

my thoughts (and prayers) on shadow & bone season 2:

(spoilers ahead, mostly about the crows, also i haven't watched the last 2 eps yet, i'll reblog with anything else when i do)

i LOVED wesper but holy fuck did they rush the fuck out of their relationship

i'm too lazy to retype it but i summed it up adequately here earlier:

the other tags i wanted to put here aren't in english so tldr: in the books, wylan and jesper's relationship is founded in their mutual respect for and admiration of each others' strengths, intelligence and genuine trust that they can do so much more than they allow themselves to. this type of relationship takes time to build, time which this show absolutely did not give them. that being said, again—i doubt the creators thought they would have the time to begin with (see tags above) and i don't really blame them for rushing it.

also... so many iconic scenes from soc AND ck lost 😭 i liked how they recreated some of them in the context of the show but some others i'll miss forever

on the plus side, we may not have gotten "just girls?" "no, not just girls" but we did get jesper recognising wylan only after he's on top on him,,, other stuff so i can't really complain lol. i enjoyed it!

wylan felt quite underdeveloped to me, plus he was reduced to his relationship with jesper, barely existed outside of it and didn't interact almost at all with anyone else. it HURTS me soul, last 2 eps better fix this.

i loved matthias making friends with his cell mate 😭

pekka rollins was a good villain in the books but they made him truly horrible in this one like jesus christ there was NO reason for him to be that bad. not complaining though! i like a good villain. i also want to see him crucified

KAZ BREKKER AND HIS LOVELY, BEAUTIFUL, INCREDIBLE BRAIN

no but i love how, once you learn enough about kaz, he's so... easy to read? as a character? every single plan of his so far this season i've been able to predict and it brings me such joy every time. this isn't me saying he was predictable, in fact i think they got his funky little brain very correctly and i loved that. they didn't get everything perfectly with him but i think his plans were super well-thought through and it reminded me how much i adore this asshole (affectionate)

where the hell was jesper's gambling addiction during this season.......... i was so happy with how they dealt with it during s1 and now 6 eps in it hasn't been mentioned in the slightest

his conflict with being a durast was also handled a bit badly, mainly because there was hardly any conflict at all 😭

overall sad with how jesper's character was dealt with, he's one of my favourites and i'm pretty frustrated lol

i feel so bad but among everything else i really couldn't care about the whole darkling and alina plot... mal being the firebird, nikolai's crew, baghra's sacrifice, genya trying to redeem herself etc were all very interesting arcs and i cared very much about them but the main plot about alina and kirigan and the problems between them. i just. Thoughts on the Mario movie

THE PROS

--Stunning animation! I mean, Jesus Mohammad Christ, the lighting?! The facial expressions?! The textures?! The weight of things falling and hitting and cracking?! The translation of 2D side-scroller to 3D world?! J'adore!!

--Genuinely horrific intro to the Darklands. Like, I was actually terrified for Luigi, especially the last shot with the Shy Guys in the castle.

--The world designs! If there's anything Illumination excels at, it's funky little societies, and the Mushroom Kingdom is no exception.

--The Battle with Francis the Dog, not only for the fantastic facial expressions of Francis himself, but for showing off how Mario and Luigi interact when faced with a problem (Luigi holding up a mirror as a shield mirrors [ha] how he protects Mario at the end of the movie). Also, the placement of the opera music over the madness happening when the plumbing goes haywire was *chef's kiss*.

--Hair flippies <3

--"Peaches"

--The voice acting: Charlie Day strikes a very interesting balance between Luigi's game voice and a real person, which makes him feel familiar at the same time as adding depth. And of course, Jack Black sounds like he had a lot of fun as Bowser, and I got chills twice during his lines.

--Existential luma

--Mario and Luigi apparently dress the way they do as a way to brand the look for their new business, and I love that. They feel out-of-place in their world somehow and fit better into the Mushroom Kingdom (which may just be the fact that their designs were meant for that world, but ce la vie, that's how it felt).

--THE HUG. I did not want to see this movie at all until I started hearing people talk about the relationship between Mario and Luigi as actual brothers. I haven't played any of the games with story, so I don't know how the film's take compares, but I do have a little sibling whom I love dearly and would absolutely learn the physics-bending rules and fight the same battles as Mario does if it meant getting my sister back. Does it feel a little fanficky? Sure. But it works.

--Actually, the whole Mario family's dynamics work, and there were so many little details and interactions I caught just on the first watch that build so much character with only a few scenes of dialogue. Mario being athletic before the events of the movie, never knowing when to quit, being defensive about his career choices and how they affect Luigi, who would follow him anywhere; Luigi being the most supportive person, even singing Mario's praises in the face of a big scary monster, never losing hope even when things are looking dire; their parents being more concerned than outright disappointed in their choices, trying to be supportive but missing the mark.

--Speaking of Mario never knowing when to quit and Luigi being a supportive person, no one in this movie really learns anything... and that's okay! The feelings that everyone has about how things should be end up being what keeps them going until the world(s) agree with them. Peach, for example, cares tremendously about the Toads and will do anything to keep them safe, which she does!

--Bowser is actually terrifying! Sure, he has his silly moments, but the badassery absolutely outweighs them. I had no doubt that he would actually commit mass murder, especially toward the end of the movie when the anger from being turned-down really comes out.

--Peach running the obstacle course in heels and a full gown (I have done something similar in a full skirt and bodice, and it was fun to watch on screen).

--FUCKIN TEAMWORK, YA'LL

THE CONS

--How many times do they have to title-drop? After seven, I was really getting tired of it. Like, yes, we know it's the Super Mario Brothers, we are aware.

--Illumination has a brand of comedy, and it is not absent from the movie.

--I'm not too familiar with the lore of anything, much less Donkey Kong, but... he never struck me as the fratboy type?? Like, sure, the dynamic kind of works when he interacts with others, but it felt... off.

--The voice acting. I saw this one coming, honestly, and I think I blame the studios more than the actors (I can't help but have sympathy). Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong felt wrong to me. Same with Cranky Kong, as if something in the voice did not match the character somehow. I'm not sure how to describe it. There were times where the same issue arose with Peach, Mario, and the main Toad as well, like there's a disconnect.

--Lots of very bright colors in both Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom, which softens the blow of actually arriving in another world. I get that this is more of a children's movie, and children love bright colors, but do you know the feeling you got when first seeing Dorothy step out of the sepia-tone house into the technicolor Land of Oz? That feeling was missing here.

--Someone used a lot of the budget on copyrighted songs, and it gets distracting. ("Mr. Blue Sky" is already intrinsically linked with a complete other fandom in my mind, so its addition really threw me out of the story).

OVERALL

The Mario movie was good! I enjoyed it, even with its faults, and I would buy the DVD if only to admire the artistry that went into the animation and screenplay. There were still times I absolutely would have screamed "HELL YEAAAHHH!" had I not been in a public theater.

Welcome to vague PJO au of Octopath Traveler II. I’ll find a name for it later but basics is that the 12 gods get funky sometimes and have kids and that becomes a problem when several monsters from the gods past comes around and tries to kill them out of revenge or just because they can.

So in comes Camp…(*squints slightly*) Flamechurch. Camp Flamechurch yes. Established to make sure that the gods kids doesn’t die a brutal and horrible death to monsters and instead just grow up with other demigod kids and friendly creatures.

As usual we got the characters primary jobs and the god representing that job being their godly parent. So you got Castti’s parent being Dohter and Osvald’s parent being Alephan and so on. Most of the cast are around 12-17 except Osvald. Who’s in his early 30s and is trying to find his daughter.

There are more characters but more on them later. Most of them are demigods (Rai Mei, Ori, and Pirro) but some are not (Alrond, Ritsu, and Crick). This leads to some interesting interactions.

Now then. On to the Cousin Trio! All of them are traumatized and have differing amounts of memories shaking in their head. And most of all, they are all potential people who can be used to unleash Vide again. So that’s fun, they’re all possible Harbingers of the Apocalypse. Hah. No pressure.

Temenos firstly is the one with the least amount of memories shaking. He has vague memories on what happened to him and that is pain, someone named Roi, and the fact that he’s apparently Aelfric’s chosen. He does not know what any of this means but he goes and casually doubts the gods a lot as they are not around their kids a whole lot.

Throné has the most memories shaking around and also remembers the horror clearly. She was raised to kill and to steal and for some greater higher purpose. She knows she is Aeber’s daughter but she doesn’t know how she got put into the Blacksnakes. She was in an orphanage and was picked up by some people who told her that they were safe and then they showed her that she wasn’t. She may be at the Camp but until she gets that collar off that neck, she’ll never be free from the Blacksnakes.

Hikari has clear memories of his childhood but then it gets around the 7-12 range and things get blurry. He got captured by some people and then he blinks and several people are dead around him. He blinks again and Temenos and Throné introduce themselves to each other. He blinks again and he’s now incredibly aware of the Curse inside him and what is festering. He blinks and now he’s out apparently and people are telling him it’s safe.

So these three are all potential Harbingers of the Apocalypse :D

And how they got rescued. Well-

Here's a list of five of my most favorite fics:

1. Prometheus Bound (Horizon; Aloy/Tilda)

My first long fic that kind of just kept growing. It was originally supposed to be three chapters, but then I fell in love with writing Tilda’s interactions with the GAIA Gang, which lead to Alva, Erend, Kotallo, and Zo all getting their own chapters. Then, to top it off, the final chapter had to be split in two!

2. Let Me Lay Waste to Thee (Critical Role; Imogen/Otohan)

My first (well really thee first) Imogen/Otohan fic. After thinking ‘is no one else seeing the hint of enemies to lovers potential here?’ for a couple months, I had my first "fine I’ll do it myself" moment. And boy am I glad I did, because now I would die for these two. I had to get creative with the Reilora as a concept and create a inexplicable psychic connection to facilitate the development of the ship over like 20k words, but imho, it fucking works, so, I’m really proud of this one!

3. The Stark Reminder (Critical Role; Imogen/Otohan)

This is the second smut piece I’ve written for the ship, but I think it’s my favorite so far. I got to dig into the softer bits of themselves they carefully keep hidden, and that was very fun to explore for two characters who hold a lot of animosity towards each other while simultaneously being drawn to each other through funky telepathic fuckery.

4. Aches and Pains of Various Sorts (Critical Role; Liliana/Otohan, and Imogen)

If you’ll allow me to pull a complete 180 now, MOON MOMS (ahem, i’m fine, i’m cool). This is the first of a huge series I’ve got planned, and from the first fic, I’ve fallen hard for this entire idea. Otohan and Liliana connecting over this mysterious power they share, and eventually reuniting and deciding to enter a dedicated partnership where they raise Imogen together is just, ugh my heart. First of all, it’s an outlet for all my Otohan headcanons pre-Apex War, which I’m very excited to dive into in the future. And on a more mushy note, I’m giving Imogen the loving parents and happy childhood she deserved.

5. When the Darkness Comes (Horizon; Silga & Untalla)

My 2022 Horizon Big Bang fic! Silga and Untalla are two NPCs in Forbidden West that never meet, but taking them and weaving a little (’little’ being a lie, it’s 35k) roadtrip adventure of them hunting down all the black box collectibles in game was super fun. As a bonus, writing the black box shorts---those final moments and small conversations of doomed soldiers---was a fun challenge that I’m really proud of!
