Kanetetsu thoughts #1
This is what the panels where Tetsuo kills Yamagata look like:
He died instantly even though he's physically stronger than most boys his age, obviously more than Tetsuo. Now let's look at Kaneda ready to shoot Tetsuo:
Tetsuo attacks him to defend himself, but doesn't kill him. It's unlikely that Kaneda suffered the same kind of attack that Yamagata did because why would he survive while being physically weaker than him ? What we can get from this is that Tetsuo willingly toned down his attack when it came to Kaneda.
Now, why ? A few panels before Yamagata's death, Tetsuo screams at Kaneda to shoot him (western order of reading, like a comic):
[translation: Tetsuo: Come on! Shoot, if you want me dead!
Yamagata: Come on! What are you waiting for?!
Tetsuo: You can't, uh? ... I'm still your friend.]
And after getting shot:
[Tetsuo: He... He... He shot... Me...]
Tetsuo truly believed that Kaneda wouldn't shoot him. He was fully confident that he risked nothing because Kaneda would still consider him as his friend despite everything he did and thus wouldn't hurt him even under pressure. That's why he's so surprised when Kaneda actually shoots.
But was it really Kaneda who shot him ?...
Kaneda shoots using poor dead Yamagata's hand still holding the gun, and leaves it in his hand when leaving this scene (see the panel next to panting Tetsuo). Physically, Kaneda was the one who shot, but he did it for Yamagata's sake. He's allowing Yamagata to pull the trigger on Tetsuo and get his revenge.
Conclusion: Neither Kaneda nor Tetsuo were ready to kill each other during this scene despite their actions. Kaneda shoots for Yamagata, not for himself. Tetsuo barely hurts Kaneda even though he just killed Yamagata. They can't bring themselves to kill the other despite the terrible circumstances because they matter too much to each other.

SHIMA TETSUO from AKIRA
JUSTIFICATION:
"i don't have a real justification im just curious as to what public opinion on this is. this is purely experimental + because i thought it would be funny. toxic masculinity is a HUGE theme of akira though esp as it pertains to tetsuo so i can't rule out at least some kind of queerness there (even though i know tetsuo is more rightly an allegory for several different other things at once, most notably the role of japan in ww2/otomo almost certainly didn't have transfemininity in mind wrt tetsuo. ngl if anyone in akira is a trans woman it's kei but that wouldn't be funny enough for the purposes of this poll/she's clearly already transitioned)" - Anonymous
