WEEK 2_ Aesthetic
In week2, we explored aesthetics, a philosophical exploration of beauty and art, focusing on elements contributing to beauty, interpretations of art, and creativity's role in shaping aesthetic experiences. (The Concept of the Aesthetic (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy), 2022)
During a campus exploration activity, my group and I analyzed restaurant and food court signs, considering their adherence to aesthetic principles. Through this activity, I discovered some notable points.
Firstly, I noticed similarities between my Studio project and our collaborative trading card curation. We researched each artist's style to inform decisions on color, font, and layout. For example, I selected Shin Dokho, a Korean designer known for bold shape, colors, typography design which also reflecting his culture. (Shin, Dokho, n.d.). In Craft modules, I explored font design's emotional impact on readers. Experimenting with shapes and negative space, I learned how fonts shape atmospheres and enhance project aesthetics.
Additionally, through deep research, I found that aesthetics is also a crucial key to creating timeless artwork like Georgia O'Keeffe's "Red Canna" series (1924), (Georgia O’Keeffe, “Red Canna” | PAFA, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 2014). Or we can also make a connection between this topic and Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" series, which captures the beauty of nature as a theme. (Richman-Abdou, 2018)
Moreover, Aesthetics in design and media focuses on creating visually appealing experiences through color, composition, and imagery, enhancing communication and leaving a lasting impression on audiences. Here are some examples:
An exemplary campaign that aligns with these principles is Apple's "Shot on iPhone." (Spence, 2023)
In conclusion, in my perception, aesthetics pertains to the concept, essence, ambiance, and overall atmosphere that an artist conveys.

WOII_The World of Ideas and Imaginations
This semester has been a journey into the world of design, where I've explored a range of activities from crafting websites to designing trading cards and experimenting with photo mash-ups. It's been an exciting blend of hands-on skills and deep thinking inspired by the World of Imagination andd Ideas course. We've delved into concepts like signs and symbols and their cultural significance.
Semiotics has been a key tool for me, helping me decode visual messages and elevate the impact of my school projects. For instance, during the Craft workshop, we used signs and symbols to create 3D setups that captured the essence of our chosen phrases. Aesthetics has also played a significant role, ensuring my designs not only looked good but also resonated with viewers. In a photoshoot for Innisfree, I focused on capturing both the product's appearance and its vibe.
I got deep into post-structuralist ideas, thinking about how design influences who's in charge and how we see the world. For my studio project, I dove into this theory because I was working on a trading card for Shin Dokho- a Korean designer. I wanted to keep things clean and simple but still capture the bold shapes they're known for, while also throwing in a bit of Korean culture to spice it up (Top Award Asia, Shin Dokho, 2020). Simultaneously, cultural materialism provided a framework for analyzing design's intersection with identity and social values, encouraging ethical considerations in creative decision-making.
In summary, this semester has been a mix of theory and practice in the graphic design realm. I've honed my skills, deepened my understanding of design principles, and gained insight into the profound influence of design on our perception of the world.
