L'Aventur de Canmom à Annecy - Mercredi 4: WTF 2023
WTF (read 'what the fuck' in a heavy French accent) seems to be a kind of annual collection of weird online shit. Titmouse is involved in some capacity, although I don't think they're necessarily the ones who picked the films. And while I did recognise one selection (umami had a film) most of it was new to me and there were some crazy good ones...
... but most of all the atmosphere of the late night screening was amazing. I got in at the last minute and somehow ended up in a reserved seat for Titmouse, since I guess they didn't show? Which meant I had one of the best views in the house. The theatre was completely packed and full of excitement.
Tumblr media
So then this guy comes out in the skintight purple vest and cape and rainbow stockings. The boss of Titmouse comes on stage and picked up one of the paper planes to invite whoever threw it to come and bite a balloon in half (which would have been a better bit if the person actually did it).
Tumblr media
Then came the directors of the films, mostly to tell jokes ("there's too much business and not enough fucking at Annecy" declared one director, instructing us to have sex tonight). After these guys... some Gobelins instructors came out to throw shirts into the crowd, people went absolutely nuts for these shirts. Then: films.
Actually a bunch of these are available online so... here, watch along x3
youtube
To open we had this stop motion earworm, Du vélo à St-Malo, du kayak à St-Briac. By the second chorus, the audience was singing along. The images are a bit lolrandom but I can't deny it's infectious in its editing.
Next up came the debut of David by Patrick Ward, about a seriously injured footballer confronting his rival framed through the story of David and Goliath. Lots of little visual jokes that made it flow even if the overall thrust of the story remained a little opaque to me.
youtube
Umami's Safe Mode was a natural fit; if you've seen an Umami film you know what to expect. Surreal character designs and a guy with a monotone voice. Looking forward to more of this series.
vimeo
The Rubbings of Trajectories by Cheng-Hsu Chung from Taiwan took things in a rather Adventure Time direction in its drawing style, full of wild perspective shifts and morphing. I was a little too caught up in the visuals to take a lot from the voiceover lol.
youtube
Insomnie by Paul Utkay leaned on Stable Diffusion interpolation for its surreal shifting visuals. This was I think the only time, besides the one after this, I've seen AI in the festival, and right now the main use of AI seems to be like this, a visual effect.
Following this came Two Gracious Uncles Smooched To The Beat (currently password locked so I can't embed it) by Jon Dunleavy, a completely frenetic sendup of the whole AI art 事件. Rather than being made by AI it's mostly deliberately janky cgi, rapidfire jokes, and wrong subtitles as an extra layer, which made for a fun watch. The thesis was maybe something like, "this is all a bit silly". As a programming move, putting this right after the AI film was kind of genius.
youtube
A Kind of Testament by Stephen Vuillemin was simply fantastic, absolutely the highlight of this collection. The framing device is that a woman stumbles on a website created by another older woman with the same name as her, consisting of incredibly elaborate animations based on her social media photos. As we watch more, we learn more about this mysterious animator, who died shortly after the protagonist contacted her. Ultimately though this framing device is just a vehicle for some really tight imaginatively grotesque shorts that gradually start to connect up more and more. I hesitate to call it ero-guro because it's not exactly ero, but it definitely put me in mind of e.g. shintaro kago. the framing device works just right, linking the shorts and providing a certain frame for interpretation - the animator is terminally ill, so jokes about foot killing parasites and regrets make sense - without being overbearing. honestly just a really great film, the perfect level of enigmatic. i hope i can show more than the trailer some day.
Internet Gaga by Reinhild Bidner slammed into a much faster pace, a pastiche of Radio Gaga by Queen with the music video consisting mainly of cutout animation and AI deepfake animation of memes. Two minutes was about the right length for this lol. But yeah, haha, the internet, what a mess amirite
Todo está perdido by Carla Pereira Docampo and Juan Francisco Jacinto Prados was a fascinating oddity though. Stop motion, with these wildly distorted models - built in forwards or backwards slants and birdlike eyes. The story concerns a suburban nuclear family where the mother lays eggs, which they mostly eat, but decide to fertilise one one day, resulting in a baby with a wrinkled head hatching. The B plot concerns their other child who gets a rat inside her skin by accident during surgery. As you can imagine it went for the squick reactions. I can't find an online video of this one but here's a previous project by the same directors.
From this point on things got pretty wild. First up we had Uncle Babysitter 2 by Tung Yin Ng aka Tungwood.
youtube
as far as toilet humour goes? This was actually great, just relentless gleeful escalation. I got to chat a bit with Tungwood and his friends after the films, and funnily enough he was very shy and would run up to people saying 'souvenir' and give them a card for the film. It was very funny talking to a group of animators, which in my eyes is like the peak of the world's professions, and have them act impressed when i say I'm a game dev.
Anyway, this was a really fun short about a baby's adventure inside a man's stomach as the man desperately tries to pull him out. The breakneck editing really makes the stupid jokes work, it's kinda Imaishi in that way.
Granny X by DD Sheahan relaxed the pace only barely, telling the story of an old lady in a nursing home having a vivid lesbian fantasy that in the waking world leads to her careening around strangling nurses and stuff. It was fun visually, although the humour seemed generally a little meaner.
Monsterfuckers by the Tohu Animation Collective led by Ori Goldberg was something like a multi animator project with loops contributed by different animators around the vague prompt of monsters having sex. So this one's like, straight up porn but weird porn so it gets to be in here lol. The editing to the music was tight and many of the clips were really creative - but no sign of it online as yet so I can't show you.
youtube
We were really on a roll at this point. The final part was the music video for Cool Party by Simon Medard for a band called Cocaine Piss, which pushed the jank factor to maximum. It didn't do a lot for me but it kept the energy going. After that we spilled out onto the lawn outside Bonlieu and everyone gathered in small groups. Not really wanting to just walk away, I inserted myself into conversations here and there, said some nice things to the showrunner, met Tungwood... and then at last time to go home, packed on the last bus like sardines.
Honestly, even if it could have been a little weirder to be truly 'what the fuck', this event was a blast. I mean you know how much I like this kind of thing lmao.
As for Thursday... haha god it's 2am. I'll write about it tomorrow... or maybe on Saturday... but the very short version is that I saw Art College 1994 (solid, donghua with a realist style and richard linklater energy), Kensuke's Kingdom (impressively elaborate adaptation of a Michael Morpurgo story, had a bit of an Iron Giant feel visually), White Plastic Sky (a very compelling scifi dystopian drama from Hungary in a rotoscoped style similar to A Scanner Darkly), stood in line for two hours for Mars Express and still didn't get in, watched a bit of Perspectives block 1 (mostly bad, it's the block for serious social issues rather than compelling storytelling) and then tried Graduation Films 3 (sadly could not live up to Graduation Films 2). So a bit of an unfortunate end to the day but that's how it be sometimes...
Tomorrow I've got another packed day so I'm gonna end up really behind on these writeups but stand by lol. Annecy is amazing, I don't want it to end...

Got these two lovely pins in the mail today, one by Trevor Brown and the other by Shintaro Kago. I recently discovered a good website called AkaTako where I can buy stuff from guro/eroguro artists. I’m going to order a Takato Yamamoto poster and I can’t wait to hang it up 🖤 I’m glad I can support artists that I love and look up to

Anime/Manga I’ve Seen/Read This Year - Notes from the Myanimelist Anime/Manga Challenges - Part 1 - Anime
Every year on Myanimelist.net, there is a Manga Reading Challenge and an Anime Watching Challenge.
Though I didn’t end up finishing all of my challenges before the deadline, I did see some good anime and read some good manga this year. I will mention a few notable ones, as well as ones notable for other reasons.
This post will deal with the anime side. Another post will be made about the manga side.
Favorites from the challenge:
Haibane Renmei - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime recommended by a staff member”
Tumblr media
Very feelsy.
A story about an angel (?) who suddenly appears in purgatory (?) and tries to find her place in the world. I thought the animation style was nice and the story was cute. Some things could have been developed a bit more, but this one still made me tear up at the end.
Wandering Son (aka Hourou Musuko) - completed for the challenge “Watch a Noitamina anime”
Tumblr media
Two trans kids in middle school trying to figure stuff out.
I loved the characters in this one. I plan to read the manga when I get the chance to see how the story goes on. I liked how one of the trans kids has an older trans role model to ask for advice. The main girl (one of the trans kids is a trans girl, the other is a trans boy) was the best, along with a couple of the side characters: a rambunctious classmate and the aforementioned older trans role model.
Kaiba - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime with more users in Plan to Watch than Completed”
Tumblr media
Vastly underrated.
Takes place in a world where people’s memories can be transferred between bodies via computer chips. A guy wakes up in a room with a hole in his chest and a locket around his neck. He goes on a quest to find his memories and who he really is.
I loved the art style and the soundtrack in this one. The premise was also very interesting.
Fune wo Amu (aka The Great Passage) - completed for the challenge “Watch a completed anime with a popularity of #701 or lower”
Tumblr media
A guy gets recruited to help edit a dictionary and makes new friends in the process.
I often found myself headcanoning the main character, Majime, as autistic, and I found myself relating to him sometimes. This anime was just one of the sweetest things.
Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven’s Door - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime from a random TV Tropes page”
Tumblr media
It’s the Cowboy Bebop movie. I love the original show. How could this not be good.
Spike and the gang hunt for a bounty, revealing more than they thought possible.
The action is great, love the characters and the music and stuff. Basically, all the stuff I love from the original series is here.
Other Notables:
Pupipo! - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime that started airing the same day you joined Myanimelist”
Tumblr media
A shy girl, Wakaba, can see ghosts. People are afraid to get near her as a result. One day, she gets a pink round creature thing, named Po, as a pet, and it helps protect her from ghosts. And she makes a new friend!
This is my most pleasant surprise of the challenge.
I thought the premise was kinda cute by itself, and it started off as a simple slice-of-life short series, but then near the end, it took an interesting supernatural twist. I also loved the friend character, Azuma. Made me laugh every time she was on screen. And I want a plushie of Po.
The episodes are 4 minutes each, and there are 15 episodes. You can finish this one in about an hour, so search it online.
Legend of Lemnear - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime that began airing between 1980 and 1989″
Tumblr media
I would consider this my guilty pleasure for the challenge.
A warrior girl, Lemnear, goes on a quest for revenge against the king that killed her family.
This was honestly a bit contrived and Lemnear’s outfit was super-fanservice-y and there was gratuitous boobs (it was the 80s, after all), and the dub could have been better (again, the 80s), but I couldn’t help but get a kick out of this one.
Probably because Satoshi Urushihara did the art. If you don’t know who he is, read my review on the hentai Another Lady Innocent. He has also done a manga that I started for the challenge, but have not yet finished.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime that aired only during 2017″
Tumblr media
A girl, Moriko, quits her job and devotes her time to playing MMORPGs. She ends up meeting a guy, and she and him are both super-awkward about it.
So many convenient coincidences/contrivances, but this anime was still so cute!!
Ling Qi (aka Spirit Pact) - completed for the challenge “Watch a Korean or Chinese anime”
Tumblr media
A guy, Yang Jinhua, dies and gets brought back to life ten years younger. He is found by Duanmu Xi and asked to be a Soul Image (like a support spirit, as Yang is still technically dead) to him. Possible shounen ai undertones.
I honestly found this one interesting because this one came out in Chinese first. I watched the Chinese dub of this anime, which I had never done before.
Yang was kind of annoying, but this anime definitely had its moments.
The Short Works of Shintaro Kago - completed for the challenge “Watch an anime with no producer, licensor, or studio listed in the database”
Tumblr media
If I had to pick a Worst for this challenge, this would probably be it.
Just some random 1-minute shorts by Shintaro Kago, a mangaka known for making manga that is on the ero-guro side, often involving sex, body horror/gore, and poop. Most of the shorts were just kinda stupid and gratuitous. There was one with Buddha jacking off and like 5 million dicks, I don’t fucking know.
The second episode/short made me laugh for some reason, though.
I would say watch if you’re morbidly curious.

Le anteprime al Lucca Comics & Games 2018
Proiezioni, home video e albi presenti in anticipo alla fiera.
Tumblr media

@house-of-inanna ANYTHING by Junji Ito. Uzumaki is A+.
Uhhhh Kichikujima/Freak Island gets like… a low B.
The Fuan No Tane anthologies are great for being extremely short.
I haven’t finished I am a Hero and it’s more Walking Dead type horror if you’re into it, overall really good.
Stuff by Shintaro Kago is really hit or miss, sometimes it’s cool surrealist stuff but other times it’s really weird/gross/disturbing randomness and not in the good way. Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re desensitized to that sort of thing or just really desperate.
The Drifting Classroom is REALLY good for something from the 70s. Not the type of horror to keep you up at night but if schoolchildren getting trapped in a post apocalyptic future interests you then it's great!
Also sorry if you've read all of these but I've been through hundreds of horror manga and these are the only ones that are memorable lmao. Soil was incredibly gripping but sadly I think the English translation was never finished. If you hate yourself then you can still read a few chapters online :(((

Manga the Week of 6/26/19
SEAN: The last week in June is just as packed as the one before, believe it or not.
Bookwalker starts us off with the 8th volume of The Ryuo’s Work Is Never Done.
Dark Horse has the 2nd Berserk Deluxe Edition and a new HP Lovecraft Collection, At the Mountains of Madness.
ASH: Both the first Lovecraft collection and the first deluxe edition of Berserk were great!
SEAN: Denpa’s debut is actually a reissue of sort. Super Dimensional Love Gun, by cult favorite Shintaro Kago, was put out a couple of years ago by hentai publisher Fakku. Now Denpa is re-releasing it, and we get a digital version to book. It’s a collection of Kago’s work, meaning it’s trippy as hell.
ASH: It really is.
MELINDA: I tend not to go for hentai, but the title of this collection is hard to resist, as is its description as “trippy as hell.”
SEAN: I’m not sure Super Dimensional Love Gun is hentai, despite its old publisher. Kago is not really something that arouses so much as morbidly fascinates.
Denpa also has the 2nd Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family, for those who want more of the Fate/Stay Night Golden Ending.
J-Novel Club, novel-wise, has An Archdemon’s Dilemma 6 and In Another World with My Smartphone 15.
On the manga end, they debut A Very Fairy Apartment, an Overlap title that has the protagonist discover, well, the apartment is full of fairies. It’s a 4-koma, and going for cute, I suspect.
There’s also the debut of the manga adaptation of I Shall Survive Using Potions!.
Kodansha has a print debut, sort of, with Card Captor Sakura: Collector’s Edition 1. New translation, new scans, new bells and whistles, etc.
MICHELLE: Different still from the Dark Horse translation? Sheesh.
ASH: From what I’ve seen, it does look like a really nice release. I haven’t decided if I’m going to double-dip or not yet, though.
ANNA: Yeah, I’m glad when series can stay in print but sometimes I wonder what the point is.
MELINDA: I really loved the Dark Horse edition, and it’s hard to justify buying it again as much as I adore the series. It’s SO TEMPTING, though.
SEAN: Also in print is Fire Force 16, a complete box set of Princess Jellyfish, the 5th Sailor Moon Eternal Edition, and (for real, I think) Tokyo Tarareba Girls 7.
ASH: Akiko Higashimura’s work is so good! I’m glad that Princess Jellyfish is getting even more love.
And also Witch Hat Atelier 2, which deserves its own line as it’s so awesome.
MICHELLE: It’s definitely on my list!
ASH: The first volume was gorgeous. I’m looking forward to the next volume.
ANNA: I still need to unearth and read the first volume, the stacks of manga in my house are out of control.
SEAN: Digitally we see Ao-chan Can’t Study 8, Asahi-sempai’s Favorite 4, Can You Just Die My Darling? 9, Elegant Yokai Apartment Life 14, My Boy in Blue 10, Tokyo Alice 12, and the 7th and final The Walls Between Us.
One Peace has a 3rd Hinamatsuri.
ASH: The first two volumes were ridiculous in a good way.
SEAN: Seven Seas has no debuts, but quite a bit of ongoing. We see the 2nd Ancient Magus’ Bride Supplement, the 4th Arifureta manga, Dragon Goes House-Hunting 3, Hour of the Zombie 9, the print edition of the 6th Make My Abilities Average! novel, The Ideal Sponger Life 2, the 2nd Reincarnated as a Sword novel digitally, and Satoko and Nada 2. Been waiting for more of Satoko and Nada.
MICHELLE: I’ll definitely be picking up Satoko and Nada and I remain curious about Dragon Goes House-Hunting, as well.
ASH: Satoko and Nada is so good! I’ll be picking up the Ancient Magus’ Bride supplement, too.
ANNA: Haven’t read Satoko and Nada, but I did get it for my library!
SEAN: Vertical has a new Monogatari Series, this one a short story collection so big it got split in two. Koyomimonogatari: Calendar Tale 1 has the first six short stories.
The Comics end of Vertical has To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts 8.
Viz has a digital-only debut with The Right Way to Make Jump!, a series that is about… well… creating manga in a Jump! style.
Yen digital has a 23rd Corpse Princess. They’ve also got Vols. 1-7.5 of My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong As I Expected’s novel out digitally as a catchup.
Yen has FOUR new debuts. The first is Little Miss P (Seiri-chan), a josei title from Enterbrain about the adventures of an anthropomorphic period. As in menstruation. It is apparently quite fun.
MICHELLE: …
ASH: I’ll admit, I’m curious. I do tend to like Enterbrain titles, and I’m always looking for more josei.
ANNA: Huh. I wonder, it could be good or terrible with that premise.
MELINDA: I don’t know how to feel about this. I mean, it probably is fun, but I dislike periods quite a lot, so it’s hard to feel jovial about them.
SEAN: Kaiju Girl Caramelise is a new title from the creator of Beasts of Abigaile, though this one runs in seinen magazine Comic Alive. It’s about a girl with an illness that makes her body do weird things, and they guy she falls for hard.
ANNA: Beasts of Abigaile was pretty fun so I am curious about this.
SEAN: KonoSuba is quite popular, and the most popular character is arguably Megumin, so why not have a spinoff? Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! is based on the light novel (due out from Yen later in the year), and features Megumin and all the rest of your favorites from the Crimson Magic Clan! And Yunyun.
And The Monster and the Beast (Bakemono to Kedamono) is not by Natsume Ono, though the art style may fool you. It’s a BL title from Kadokawa’s Asuka Ciel, and seems to be the male equivalent of Beauty and the Beast Girl.
MICHELLE: This one looks really nifty.
ASH: I plan on checking it out!
MELINDA: It sounds like my thing just from the art style alone.
SEAN: And lastly, there’s a 3rd manga volume for Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online.
What manga are you sitting and reading immediately?
