Magikarp/gyarados review? 🐟🎏🐉

Magikarp is everyone's favorite useless fish, and it does a pretty damn good job at being a Useless Fish. I think the eyes really get this across well—this is a creature that absolutely only has a single brain cell bouncing around in there like a game of Pong, all right.

Visually, the design is pretty simple, but it does what it needs to. Like I said, the expression is spot-on, and the open mouth also adds something to it. The whiskers are nice, both carp-like but also reminiscent of eastern dragons, and the body has a distinctive bony shape that'll become even more prominent when it evolves into Gyarados.

The only thing that bugs me about it is the pink mouth; it looks disturbingly fleshy and adds another color that isn't needed. White or yellow would've worked much better. Also, I don't really think the lines under the bottom of the head were needed, but that's a very minor thing.

(Also, side note: this isn't needed in any capacity, but Magikarp was given some pretty neat patterns in the Magikarp Jump game. Some of them are completely different colors and look a bit too much like shinies, but the more koi-like ones are really cool and I wouldn't mind seeing them in an official game.)

The whole concept of a fundamentally weak and useless Pokemon evolving into something badass and powerful is a great concept, and Gyarados pulls it off very well. It's also a nod to the Chinese legends about how carp that managed to jump over waterfalls would become dragons, so that adds another layer to it. It's also probably based in part off of windsocks, hence the water/flying typing (keep in mind that in Gen 1, the dragon type was still considered to be rare and mythical).

Visually, I think Gyarados does a good job looking more powerful without being completely disassociated from it's pre-evo. Similar to the Dratini line, people seem to think the two stages have nothing in common, which isn't true at all. They both have:

"Lips" and wide open mouths

Whiskers

Three-pronged fin structures on the back

The fins near the head having an edge at the top and the tail having two edges

Segmenting of the body

A bony, rigid body structure

Gyarados changes color and gains a more serpentine body, but the visual elements and overall design remain shockingly similar so you can stop trying to say Gyarados and Dragonite were flipped just because Gyarados is long and blue, seriously if I see that "theory" one more time I am going to go apeshit on someone

Visually, you can definitely tell that this is a powerful Pokemon, and I love the shapes and detailing around the head. The repetition of the body segments helps to create a pattern, simplifying what would otherwise be a complex design.

The only nitpick I have is that it's strange that the whiskers are positioned under the head instead of by the mouth, which isn't a big deal but is hard to unsee once you see it. Also, the three prongs on the head would've worked better in cream or white. Otherwise, I have no complaints.

Gyarados also has a mega for no real reason, though at least with this one you can't argue it would've been better as a regular evo, as that would've defeated the point of the Entire Everything.

I don't think it adds much to the line, but the design itself isn't terrible. I do actually really like the massive back fins, which pop nicely and instantly gives a focus point to the design. Other than that, most of the design is just exaggerating things already on base Gyarados—longer whiskers, longer head ornament, long head fins, extra body fins, etc., which works to make it look more powerful.

However, I do have a few issues with it. Adding two colors to a previously two-color design feels like a bit much, and all three colors are too low contrast. I think the black was added to try to haphazardly justify the dark typing, but all the black areas could easily be cream/red without losing anything. Alternatively, making the red areas cream would've helped with the contrast; I'm not sure why they're there anyway, other than a tenuous connection to Magikarp. Here's a quick edit to show what I mean (original on left):

Also, it actually has two giant back fins. When I first saw it I thought it had one, and frankly I think that would look just as good but would've cut down on the clutter a bit. It doesn't look too bad from a side angle, but it's a bit much from the front:

I'm also not big on the two extra tail fins, as the bottom set interrupts the flow a bit (they're also more rounded than the main fins; some consistency would've been nice), and the spike under the chin feels random. Everything else, however, works well enough for what they were going for, and it's at least an interesting albeit pointless take on the original design.

Anyway, overall: the concept of a weak Pokemon suddenly getting super strong upon evolution is a good one, and this line handles it well. Magikarp is endearingly useless, and Gyarados has good contrast with it while still looking like they belong together. The mega isn't quite as good, but it's still a solid enough design as a whole minus some clutter and odd color choices.

What do you think the mk1 characters pokemon would be? (in earthrealm since i dunno if outworld could have pokemons)

IMO bihan could have a glalie or something lol and liu kang would maybe have a shiny gyarados.

oh god I did a whole list for pokemon I associate with genshin characters let me do this for mk1. I'll try to explain my thoughts as best I can but these are pokemon I just kinda think would fit with them, whether it be oh them as a pokemon or a pokemon I think would work with them well.

Liu Kang - Reshiram

He's a god, I just HAD to give him a legendary pokemon. Reshiram fits both the dragon and fire stuff he is associated with. Plus Reshiram being the pokemon representing truth makes sense (though I kinda think ideals fit better for Liu Kang, I like the matching with Reshiram more).

Sub Zero - Chein-Pao

I like the ice vibe with this pokemon, and the description feels like it vibes enough with me. "The hatred of those who perished by the sword long ago has clad itself in snow and become a Pokémon." Idk!! I think he'd look neat with it :).

Scorpion - Centiskorch

I tried to incorporate some ideas of bug into the pokemon since the existing scorpion pokemon aren't that funky imo. I had to go with a fire type because, yeah, so this is what I settled with. I think I could have done better but eh none of the other fire pokemon imo fit his vibe.

Kitana - Oricorio Sensu form

Elegant, has flying elements, matches with the new feather aesthetic they put in 1, and the wings kinda look like fans! I think it's neat :)

Johnny Cage - Incineroar

This is mostly because of smash bro's influence but this pokemon is a heel archetype. They're showy, cocky, and like to taunt others! I think it kinda works. There's probably another show offy pokemon that's slipping my mind though.

Kenshi - Honedge

I wanted to give him Aegislash but there is no shield on Kenshi so oh well LMAO. I also think that the pokedex entry fits well "Honedge’s soul once belonged to a person who was killed a long time ago by the sword that makes up Honedge’s body." So yeah!!

Kung Lao - Honchkrow

I'll be honest. It's just the hat. But I think this man could use a funky bird. Idk!! I think he'd like a bird :)

Mileena - Mawile

I like the steel theming along with the jaw parts in Mawile. I thought it'd be neat to give Mileena a pokemon that can mega evolve since despite how cool it looks it apparently hurts them, which fits with Tarkat. "It has an extremely vicious disposition. It grips prey in its two sets of jaws and tears them apart with raw power."

Raiden -Jolteon

Had to go with an electric type. Idk! I think the idea of Raiden turning from a simple farmer (think eevee) and turning into an electric user fits!

Rain - Slowking

I had to go with a water type, and i also went with a psychic type because of the whole mage thing! I think the pokedex entry would appeal to Rain's ambition well too, "When its head was bitten, toxins entered Slowpoke’s head and unlocked an extraordinary power."

Smoke - Torkoal

Has the ability white smoke, and can learn smoke screen. Idk! I think it fits better than stunky line or wheezing line. There's not much in the way of pokemon with a smoke theme.

Li Mei - Arcanine

It's the pokemon (well, growlithe is) that is associated with the police in the pokemon world. That, and it kind of resembles a tiger which is part of the lion dog she uses. I do wish there was a better pokemon that is closer to fireworks than Blacepheon but oh well.

Baraka - Mega Houndoom

I like the idea of a leader of the pack pokemon, one that is dark type. I made the idea of a pokemon that is mega permanently since it fits with the whole "thing that is hurting them" and when it is mega evolved houndoom can hurt itself with how hot it's inner temperature can get. "Its red claws and the tips of its tail are melting from high internal temperatures that are painful to Houndoom itself."

Tanya - Tsareena

Thought it'd be appropiate to give her a pokemon that is a female only line. I also think it'd fit her being a more "ruthless" pokemon to match her willingness to fight those who might hurt the royal family "This feared Pokémon has long, slender legs and a cruel heart. It shows no mercy as it stomps on its opponents."

Geras - Celebi

I thought it'd be cool to give him a mythical pokemon since he's pretty close to godhood/will become the next keeper of time. That, and the whole time thing fits too.

Reptile - Krookodile

Crocodile, that's pretty much it.

Havik - Staryu

It fits the whole regeneration thing. "As long as the center section is unharmed, it can grow back fully even if it is chopped to bits." and "An enigmatic Pokémon that can effortlessly regenerate any appendage it loses in battle." Also I think it's a nice call back to when Chaosrealm worshipped water

Ashrah - Togekiss

I thought it'd be nice to give a pokemon that looks like an angelic theming (well, as close as it gets). Idk I think they'd get along :)

Sindel - Exploud

Screaming. Uh, that's really it! I also think it fits her commanding prescence I guess haha ^^ I couldn't find a pokemon that fits her hair thing so we're going with her screaming.

Shao - Bisharp

It commands pokemon, and looks like it fits the vibe of a general as well! Plus it'd match with his axe. "This pitiless Pokémon commands a group of Pawniard to hound prey into immobility. It then moves in to finish the prey off."

Nitara - Gliscor

Resembles a vampire bat. Also according to Legends Arceus, it does this: "It glides soundlessly on pitch-black wings and sinks sharp fangs into the throat of its prey. It takes on a look of satisfaction once it has entirely drained its prey of blood."

Shang Tsung - Arbok

Snake theming. I also like how the stomach can be used to transfix others and to intimidate them so it can poison others. Feels befitting.

Reiko - Pawniard

Fits the whole thing with Shao's pokemon and how it is loyal and ruthless. Follows him no matter what, I think it makes sense to me.

Gändvitan Regional Fish!

Typing this while chaining for a unique Fluffi in doodle world I can quit anytime I want I swear

While a pattern on much shakier ground than things like regional birds or regional bugs, I still am branding these guys as the "regional fish" because they're realistically the earliest fish pokemon you could get in this region and are some of the more "basic" water types here

(For the record we don't have an actual regional bug but trust me we make up for it in spades later down the line).

This little guy (and their big sibling but we'll get to them later), despite what their name may imply, are NOT based on platypuses. I know that the designs between them and real platypuses are similar but a keen eye can spot the differences. In reality, they are based on the prehistoric Platecarpus, which is why he and his siblings have such exaggerated and pronounced eyes.

And also to cater to me specifically, the world's No. 1 salmonoid fan.

Words can not fully explain how much I love these guys and their design. Unironically, these are some of my favorite designs in anything, ever.

Now, when Platypup is taken to a special lake, high up on a mountain, in Gyarados-like fashion it becomes:

Platycolval! Aside from DESPERATELY needing a new name, this big fellow is based on old-timey depictions of "here be monsters" that would be drawn in the corners of old maps to identify unfamiliar and dangerous parts of the seas. This is why Platycolval has the eyes and ornate patterns running down it's body, as both can be found in these classic little depictions that have always been in my mind ever since I laid eyes on them for whatever reason

these two in particular are the main inspirations for Platycolval.

Also additional trivia: both its shiny and its dex entry are references to Felix Colgrave's short film "Dry Run", which I am endlessly fond of and I implore that you watch.

Did some more shiny hunting in the obsidian fieldlands for a shiny Burmy for my shiny dex

Still no Burmy, but I got

-a massive mass outbreak west sea Shellos. Pretty nice since i needed it for the shiny living dex!

-a random shiny male Starly in the same run as the Shellos. Sadly I don't need anything from the Starly line as a male so it's an extra

-2 random shiny Zubats. I already finished the entire line so they're extra

-a random shiny Shinx. Already have the full line so it's an extra

-a massive mass outbreak Monferno, I already have the full Chimchar line so it's an extra

-2 shiny Magikarps in the same outbreak right after eachother. A male and a female, I did already have a female Magikarp but that means I can evolve it into a female Gyarados!

-a random female shiny Starly, great because I just needed female Staraptor to finish the Starly line!

-a random male Kricketot, sadly I dont need a male Kricketot or Kricketune so it's an extra

Vileplume - Piff - Grown as a project as a child in class, like when kids have to grow lima beans or sunflowers.

Cubone - Harley - his first true catch, his own choice, a very naughty boy, clever, difficult to connect with. House mon.

Poliwrath - Luthor - A catch as a young child, good natured and well adjusted. Strong willed.

Gyarados - Tanto (lady of the lake) - A sweet gentle soul who proves not all of the species are menacing. Prosthetic tail.

Houndoom - Saxon - An old ex-fighter, floppy herd mon now, keeps flocks in line, and lies to lie on people. loves a pet, scruffy.

Blastoise - Marcellus - A calm caring presence, spends his retirement days watering crops with fitted sprinkler heads on his cannons.

Hawlucha - Mysterio - Jolly, high energy, very charismatic. Loves to showboat, is friendly and open.

Carracosta - Costa - shy, docile and often out at sea, comes in for some time with Grey, but keeps to himself a lot.

Lucario - Gai - Always close at hand, helps Grey test items, is a solid fighter and very energetic individual. Can hype up a room.

Gyarados - Bilquiss - shiny, the meanest natured of the pod, not to be messed with, holds some regard for her trainer, but only him.

Gyarados - Atriox - Strongest and largest in the pod, a king form, unusual horns and fins, very well balanced, a good fighter.

Machop - Jack - Alwasy in his little puffer jacket, he's a good natured pokemon with a curious nature, and willing energy to be involved.

Twin Tyrogues - Andy and Olly - hatched from a single egg, they're inseparable, chaos energy, totally dumb, house mons.

Pancham - Pam - a house pokemon, testing little girl, leads others to make bad choices, devious, smart.

Pangoro - Mob - docile, a good battler, soft natured, lost his cape fur a while back, never regrew. Very chill.

Toxel - Vladimir - Got some dietary allergies, house pokemon, total baby, loves to sit on a hip. Has to have special care during storms.

Tangela - Jo - Caught young, grows flowers now, very shy, Helps around the house a lot.

Garchomp - Ginseng - A sturdy boy with a tolerance for others. Boa's dad.

Scyther - Loch - helps tend the grounds, a little stoic, but kind hearted, does the right thing.

Darumaka - Zeke - a lovable goofball, house pokemon, rolls everywhere possible.

Chesnaught - Obelix - shiny, dwarf sized. A tiny sweetheart, buddy shaped, not suitable for battle.

Mudsdale - Chester - Sturdy, solid mount for Grey to traverse with ease. Bombproof.

Dusknoir - Vanquish - naughty, tricky, cheeky and elusive, a great deal of fun, visitors like her a lot.

Accelgor - Seven - Cool calm and collected, tries to maintain this energy but can be startled easily.

Talonflame - Angel - a great delivery mon, proud and fussy, but very fond of her trainer, a speedy individual.

I know like a billion people (I'm sure) have come up with FNaF + Pokémon AUs but hear me out:

I've been Enjoying setting up the "Golden Four" as a thing in my brain; Fredbear/Golden Freddy, Spring Bonnie, Old Man Consequences, and the Puppet. So for a Pokémon AU you can bet that they had their adventures long before any plot that would involve other characters (ie; the Classics or the Glamrocks).

Their teams would be as follows (limited to four-five for the plot instead of six because of arbitrary reasons, also * indicates a shiny):

Fredrick (Fredbear): Ursaluna, Venusaur, Skeledirge, Swampert, Dusknoir

Harry (Spring Bonnie): Lopunny, (Alolan) Marowak, Gardevoir, Wigglytuff*

Connie (OMC): Feraligator, Gyarados*, Relincath, Kabutops

Mari (Puppet): Banette, Mimikyu, Chandelure, Yamask

Going in line with some of PKMN's darker stories, these four trainers would be investigating the disappearances of five children in a town they come across. They find neither the children's bodies nor the kidnapper (guess who), but they do find a quintet of Phantumps and a Hypno that's too powerful and battle-ready to be wild.

Eventually they figure out that said Hypno was William's and they take care of the Phantumps (Mari brings one onto her team and even evolves her), but later Harry goes back to catch that Hypno...

And of course, thirty-ish years later or something, that Hypno is still on Harry's team, with Harry being either the Big Bad or the Champion, whatever sounds more fun to me later lol

Other details:

Connie actually has like dozens of Gyarados in his PC because he's a fisherman

If Harry's not the AU region's champ then Fredrick is

Yes Harry's team is deceptively cutesy on the surface for being a character I like to interpret in my personal main universe as complicit in child murder lol

To be fair 90% of the reason Lopunny and Wigglytuff are there is because Bunnies

Fredrick later passes on a Teddiursa to his son as his starter

likewise Connie gives his grandson Monty a shiny Totodile for his starter, and Monty definitely ends up a rival character and/or gym leader (though if both then Connie would totally take back over to do the actual theoretical gym fight with the player lol)

While this AU would generally be set in a theoretical USA-inspired region, Mari would originally come from Johto, because Johto is the best region DON'T @ ME (but also because it suits her lol)

This entirely came from listening to various PKMN theme songs and I don't plan to do anything with it so just have it lmao

I’ve already seen a couple people base their fan-made “Paradox Raichu” designs off of Gorochu, which is a fun way to associate “Ancient Pokemon” with real world Pokemon prototypes... But I think that doesn’t go far enough, we need more Paradoxes based on Beta Pokemon!

Some ideas under the cut...

1) Paradox Ivysaur/Venusaur

Based on this early Ivysaur sprite, I could still see this being used to represent an ancient Venusaur as well. Perhaps the flower is absorbing so much energy to grow large that the actual Pokemon itself is frail and barely able to crawl along while pancaked underneath. Grass/Ground perhaps?

2) Paradox Wartortle/Blastoise

Based on the Wartortle beta evolution before Blastoise was tacked on to the end of the line instead. Definitely imagining this ancient Pokemon capitalizing on the wise, long-lived turtle stereotype... Water/Psychic or Water/Fairy?

3) Paradox Clefairy/Clefable

This one definitely feels like it could be adapted into a caveman-themed Clefairy or Clefable. You just need to give it back the hair tuft the finished design has but in a more wild style... Or with a bone in it if you really want to get the idea across. Fairy/Rock or perhaps Fairy/Ground?

4) Paradox Arcanine

You could definitely lean in to Arcanine’s more Qilin-like Beta design for a Fire/Dragon Paradox form. I also included a Beta Gold & Silver sprite (Totally unrelated to any Pokemon in the finished game afaik) because it feels like it could be a woolly Arcanine specialized for the Ice Age... Fire/Ice type then?

5) Paradox Poliwrath

I don’t really have any strong ideas for this, I just think an ancient Poliwrath from an age of vicious prehistoric Pokemon that’s actually more docile and friendly than its modern counterpart would be kinda funny

6) Paradox Seel

Caveman Seel... What else needs to be said?

7) Paradox Gastly/Gengar

Not sure which one I prefer, but both work to represent formless/amorphous versions of these Pokemon. Maybe this could represent what Gastly/Gengar looked like before humanity came along and they started adapting their habits to better scare humans. Would that that be a retcon? Perhaps... You could give it a Poison/Dark typing unless you really want it to be a Ghost-type

8) Paradox Scyther

Definitely Bug/Dragon or Dragon/Flying. What else can I say?

9) Paradox Magikarp/Gyarados

Based on this terrifying Beta Gyarados sprite, I can definitely see this being the inspiration for a Paradox Pokemon that takes elements from both Magikarp and it’s evolution (Also invoking shiny Gyarados’s red color scheme). Perhaps a huge serpentine fish with the same dopey Magikarp face lined with Gyarados’ sharp teeth? One could theorize that it evolved the scarier appearance of modern Gyarados for intimidation purposes... Admittedly this idea doesn’t have a lot to do with the Beta design as much as those “middle-evolution” fan-designs. Water/Dragon typing maybe?

10) Paradox Lapras

Lapras but more plesiosaur-like... Also included Aquarius the Water Starter from the Gold & Silver beta here because it feels like it could represent Lapras as an aquatic hunter before it developed the heavy shell that forced it into a more stationary lifestyle

11) OMEGA

Don’t know where exactly to put this, but Omega is literally too iconic among Beta Pokemon not to include in this list in some way. Also, it’s a Pokemon that’s actually a robot! A Future form for once! Perhaps a Paradox Rhydon or Aggron... Make it a mechanized future Kangaskhan if you really wanna go nuts

12) Paradox Ariados

Spooky scary spider

13) Paradox Sunflora

Perhaps this could represent Sunflora before it’s roots adapted into two distinct legs for walking on. Another Grass/Ground type then?

13) Paradox Dunsparce

A form of Dunsparce before developing wings and drill-tail, a pretty traditional tsuchinoko. Normal/Ground or Normal/Poison perhaps

14) Paradox Gligar

I love Gligar as a terrifying scorpion-bat that nonetheless possesses a shockingly friendly face, but something needs to be done with it’s freaky facehugger-inspired beta design some day. Adding the Bug, Poison, or Dark type would certainly get the idea across

15) Paradox Octillery

Another one that could actually work as a Future Pokemon, just play up the tank/turret elements that got toned down in the finished design in a more sci-fi way. Water/Electric or Water/Steel

16) Paradox Grotle/Torterra

This one’s simple, just use small aspects from the beta sprites to play up the saurian elements of this evolutionary line. Grass/Rock?

17) Paradox Gabite/Garchomp

That Beta Garchomp barely needs any changes to be an ancient paradox version... But I do wonder if a quadrupedal Gabite could be more interesting way to play with the concept? Water/Dragon or Ground/Water perhaps

18) Paradox Lickilicky

This beta design for Lickilicky that we only have a back-spirite for could easily inspire a Paradox Pokemon representing the Lickitung evolutionary family. The spiky rotund body and hunched-over posture works perfectly for a Ancient Pokemon, but also the resemblance to a mechanical tape measure (Or bubble gum tape if you prefer) could also work for a future Lickilicky... You could turn the spikes into a whole energy buzz saw or turn the tongue into an energy whip

19) Paradox Yanmega

Another one that could work for past or future. Play up the meganeura kaiju elements for the ancient variation or magnify the aircraft aspects for the robotic future counterpart. Honestly the more I look at this sprite the more it makes me think of an orbital space laser with the wings as satellite solar panels... But maybe that’s just me

20) Paradox Komala

This sprite obviously predates Komala by so many years there’s absolutely no way there’s a connection, but you can easily see how it could be used to inspire an ancient Komala. Perhaps the branch it clings to is expanded out into a whole spear that it wields? Normal/Grass or perhaps Normal/Fighting

There’s probably more beta sprites you could take inspiration from, but I think this is more than enough for now... I wish there was more future forms to even things out, but I guess it makes sense that there wouldn’t be that many inorganic-looking designs associated with existing Pokemon before now

Sorry I took so long to answer this, I actually had to think about this for a couple days to really have a good answer. I hope y'all don't mind a long post because I want to explain my picks a little. I'll include links to the shiny in the list under the cut

5 favorite shinies:

Growlithe/Arcanine: This has been my favorite shiny since Gen 3 made their shiny not awful, and I finally got one in 19 eggs in SV! It's also one of my favorite pokemon.

Mimikyu: This might be unpopular and maybe (second) favorite pokemon bias, but adore the grey-scale of this shiny. I feel like it emulates the feel of the Gen 1 sprites, and it would make sense that Mimikyu, which wanted to be loved like Pikachu, would model itself after the original way it looked.

Umbreon: This might shock some people, because Sylveon is my favorite pokemon, but this is my favorite shiny Eeveelution. It just looks so cool! The blue stripes replacing the yellow is just so good. It just communicates cool Moon-inspired pokemon to me.

Rockruff: Another of my favorite pokemon that has an amazing shiny. It's a blue puppy! What's not to love? The shade of blue is also fantastic, just super cute. (can you tell I like blue shinies)

Gourgeist: We love a goth queen, tbh.

Honorable mentions: Mareep, Kantonian Ninetails, Galarian Zigzagoon-line (trans rights), Toucannon (bi rights), Sylveon (I only slightly prefer the original, still amazing), Sandygeist, Unovan Zorua, the Tapus

5 better than the original:

Wooloo: the reversed black and white just looks so good, I can't do it justice. Just a home run of a shiny.

Crobat: Bias because Zubat was my first shiny ever in Gen 2 (including the red Gyarados, I think). Also I just think it looks cool as hell. I got one in Sun and named her Babs because she looks like Batgirl with the pink and green scheme.

Camerupt: Talk about a major improvement! It's original design is... fine, like volcano camel, got it. The shiny just out shines (no pun intended) it in every way. The black and yellow work so well together, and while it doesn't scream "fire camel" it just looks so good.

Beautifly: Huge upgrade, imo. Looks super artistic, like a stained glass mosaic. Absolutely gorgeous, and it really pops compared to the original. Also, trans rights

Charizard: Wee-woo Genwunner alert! I might be biased, because Charmander was my original starter almost 25 years ago and remains one of my favorite Pokemon to this day. I still remember my original Charizard (MZ, no idea why I named it that I was 7), and when I saw it's shiny (in gen 3 when they fixed it) I knew I had to have one because it is just so dang cool.

5 Worse than the original: (excluding the obvious ones that are barely different than the originals)

Absol: I don't hate this shiny or anything, I just think the original Absol is a near perfect design. It does a great job of looking foreboding and kinda ominous, but the shiny doesn't quite do that.

Volcarona: It just feels like the colors on this shiny were picked randomly and both don't go together and look bad on this design. Serious downgrade all around, more negative points because I really like Volcarona

Primarina: This is one of my 5 favorite pokemon of all time, but this shiny makes me almost want to cry. I understand changing the "hair" from blue to blonde to try to like imitate the look of a traditional mermaid, but the change to the rest of the accents to that like pale yellow(?) is just bad. Primarina was a near perfect design, but the shiny is bad.

Snubbull: You would think I would like this because of the blue dominance on a dog pokemon, but it's just ugly to me. The Pink and blue-spot combo works for me on the original, but the reverse hurts my eyes. ALSO WHY ARE THE FEET ORANGE?!

Bruxish: One of my least favorite pokemon and just a terrible shiny. Colors feel totally random.

129-130 - Magikarp Line

So shiny Magikarp is already a golden fish so I've decided to make him a diamond fish. Now that's a fish I'd pay 500 Pokedollars for.

Now, it's obviously difficult to improve one of the most iconic shinies in the series (possibly even more than Charizard's). So I'll be honest, I didn't try too hard. Maybe I could've made him a darker red, or a different red. But I decided to make him purple, because that's what colour I made him in 2015, and I thought it looked pretty rad.

For Mega Gyarados I've been completely self-indulgent and made him dark purple and red. Because I think it looks cool and I don't care if it's an improvement or not.

Fun things about my main file in PLA:

My strongest Pokémon is a level 99 alpha gyarados named Stormy and she has only left my party twice since I caught her and I STILL haven’t finished the 70 hurricane requirement because IT ONLY HAS 5 PP I’m in. Hell.

I will not consider this file complete until I 100% it AND catch a shiny male gyarados named Ace in honor of my heartgold red boy ❤️

I caught a shiny Avalugg right before the Avalugg boss fight which started a trend of me finding shinies right before kicking off the endgame.

I dress my character exclusively in blue and yellow because it reminds me of Volo, and I have a Togekiss I raised from a Togepi named after him. I’m coping. I promise.

My Giratina is named Cherish and that’s the only legendary Pokémon I named

I have 5 Typhlosions, named uno, dos, tres, quatro, and my starter Blewitt (which is the name of a mountain where a wildfire was that I went and took pictures of the wildflowers growing afterwards, when I was younger) because I was perfecting that lines entries and needed. A lot. And I numbered them to keep track and not get attached but I got attached anyway.

The first entries I perfect in every file are the Roserade line because I STILL don’t have a shiny Roserade and I want a set of shiny Roserades (one normal and one alpha—to transfer and keep in file respectively) because it’s my favorite shiny in the game and afhdgghbhbhbbb GIVE IT NOW

I oneshot every one of Volo’s main team in the final fight because I heard it was really tough and just… got a bunch of overleveled alpha Pokémon, walked up, and said “I want that twink obliterated”

Harry never had a Pokémon before. Not until Piu-Piu, that is.

PIU-PIU is Rotom!

An electric/ghost-type pokémon that:

can invade and control his phone;

can hack other appliances (allegedly);

speaks ~human~;

makes mischief;

but also uses its abilities to help; and

time travels!!!!!!!!!

And look at that face. I can hear it going wee-woo and annoying Harry all the time...

Apparently you can also customize your Rotom-phone, so Rosé cover to match Piu-Piu's natural colour~

Also, Rotom's basic move is Thunder Shock / Electric Shock. You know, just like Piu-Piu.

But Piu-Piu isn't his. They're just following Harry around. His first actual Pokémon is a goldfish he won in the market (D89, lunch chat).

Poseidon is Seaking!

It'd be potentially funnier as a Magikarp, the most underestimated pokémon of all time, but the thing is: Magikarp can evolve. And they become Gyarados.

Poseidon's a goldfish, which Seaking are based on it;

The last on their evolution line (no, she won't grow);

Literally called the King of the Seas! And in the beta games, originally called "Neptune" - a.k.a. Poseidon. A perfect fit.

I especially like corycatte's artwork for Seakings - which features several variants created through breeding;

To fit pokémon canon, I believe Poseidon's fins and/or horn wouldn't be so well developed, since they're the main reason people catch Seakings. (Not that it matters to Harry, anyway);

I don't think he'd want to keep her in a PokéBall, but if he ever had to, it'd be a luxury ball, obviously.

Bonus: "furball" is Lillipup!

He doesn't talk much about it (D73, breakfast), so I'm not settling this, but what screams "furball" more than Lillipup??? It's also a quiet, clever dog, so I imagine baby!Harry would like it. If they stayed together, Lillipup would've been a nice companion and fierce defender...

I especially like the idea of a shiny one, that has lighter fur.

Yamper is second best choice, since it's a dog from Galar (nod to his ancestry). And it likes to follow fast people / things :)

He'd rejoin a new team on this file, which also was cut short due to hinge snapping. So I thought, anyway... 😳

Yeah hatching eggs can take a while but it balances out w how fucking high the rates are. Plus it's perfect how it lines up, for building your team early game! From there, you can either get yourself a glitch shiny Ditto in a gen 1 game using the shiny Gyarados OR just like. reasoning for each team member, starting with ed:

-clodsire: i like to imagine its his starter, he probably caught on his own. they both have that baby cow look that ed does to stede in ep 5.

-mimikyu: mimikyu is a very misunderstood pokemon in the pokemon world, similiar to how ed is seen as blackbeard to pretty much everyone. i imagine they found some kinship in eachother.

-gengar: this guy? this guy would love a good fuckery! gengar is a menace to the pokeciety and i think ed would be absolutely delighted by this guy.

-gyarados: he fished it up when he was novice trainer, back when he was on hornigolds crew. i feel like every pirate would have a gyarados in this universe.

-hisuian samurott: i’ll be honest theres no real backstory here. i just think!! cool pirate mon!! cool pirate guy!! boom, he’s on the team.

-crobat: also caught when he was a novice trainer, before he killed his father. i imagine it evolved into a crobat soon after he joined hornigolds crew.

now for stedes team:

-shiny galarian rapidash: it is his starter!! aka, arthur(he has kind eyes). probably descended from a long line of fancy rapidashes in the bonnet family and ended up in stedes care.

-goodra: caught in ep 2 i imagine, a little after he was freed by the natives. he found the little guy as a goomy and it helped them out while they were tricking izzy. it evolved gradually over the episodes.

-venomoth: once again was caught during the series, specifically ep 7. it takes place of the moth that stede showed off to ed. he’d love bug types.

-golisopod: his first ever pokemon that he caught as a child! found him while hiding from the badmintons as a wimpod. i imagine that it stayed a wimpod, till it evolved in a crucial moment during the series.

-togekiss: gifted as a egg during one of his and marys anniversaries. he spent a lot of time with it(more time than with his kids-) and it evolved quickly.

-ribombee: like with eds samurott, i had no real reason. i just think it fits him! this man would love bug types and ribombee is a bug type. they’re both fancy dudes(ribombee with its scarf and stede with his outfits)
