Actually I am just going to put this out there.

I’m coining the term “Ship by Numbers” like as in color by numbers.

I mentioned it a couple times in private messages to friends to explain how I see this whole subset of fans who only get into the latest fandom just for the SHIP and then go on to apply the exact same tropes/jokes/ideas for the ship without taking into account the specific differences each character/ship has or the larger message of the story or specific background things that make the characters unique and how certain characters specifically characters of color should have stuff tailored to them that expresses their character/background rather than something that could easily be used for white characters because imo it should not be so interchangeable.

Yes, I know tropes are well reused for a reason, and I love shipping too, but I also wanted a way to describe how certain fans just don’t interact with the Media beyond the ship, they apply the same exact things in the new ship as they did the old ship, just going down the list. I think specially on that one post I saw a while back where someone mentions they don’t actually read/watch/interact with the media and just copy/paste tropes onto the new ship because it gets them attention in their fics. Everyone is free to ship/interact or not with the media or characters they see fit and this isn’t some call out post saying don’t do this, because I really don’t care what others do.

I just wanted to point out this very... synthetic way of putting square blocks into a circle and shaving away the edges/specific characteristics/backgrounds of those characters until they feel exactly the same as other ships. Then the cycle repeats the instant a new ship shows up. So people just “Ship by Numbers”.

What the hell fandom gods???

Why do I have to keep tripping into the shallow rabbit holes that are the rare pair ships?!?!?!

First, it was Xie Wang and Ye Baiyi from Word of Honor

And NOW, I've been ensorcelled by Dracule Mihawk and Roronoa Zoro from OPLA! I mean, they are both amazing individually, but together... chef's kiss! I expected this ship to be far more popular than it is, tbh, but alas...

Just ship the fucked up dynamic you claim to love!

< I said this earlier in frustration over fans who claim to love fucked up dynamics, enemies to lovers, unhealthy romances, etc. yet they go out of their way to do whatever possible to absolve the offending partner, or situation, so it's palatable yet still hide behind "you just don't like x ship because it's fucked up" like, no, I'm annoyed! I'm annoyed because it could be interesting! Even if it's not a good healthy ship but then you went and erased interesting aspects of it and claim it wasn't "His/Her fault bc they had x trauma" or demonized another non ship character to take the heat off the ship dynamic, and then you have the gall, the stones, the balls if you will, to claim I don't understand because I can't accept something that isn't pure or good?

The reason I didn't want to post this is because I know it will get turned into a Pro vs Anti Fandom ship debate and I am sick to death of those. This isn't about that.

I'm not into fictional ships for it all to be pure and good, sometimes I want to see fictional characters tear each other apart emotionally because of what happened in canon so erasing characters actions takes away so much. But sure, I don't understand the characters, I'm wrong for not subscribing to this weird "fucked up romance lite" thing that fans push onto fandom.
