Okay the prison scene is just. SUCH a good case for why Ye Shiqi/Tushan Jing is the best romantic candidate for Xiaoyao. He loves Wen Xiaoliu (which, certainly Cang Xuan never managed to muster even genuine affection for his neighbor and friend) because she’s his savior, sure, but it’s that she afforded him dignity and human respect and more specifically saw him as a person still capable of causing desire— her affections are never shallow or insincere, unlike literally every other person in his life who would run. This is a very solid reason to fall in love with someone!! And in turn, he offers a devotion which is solid and quiet and dependable and sincere. His love is a very sure thing, he can wait their whole lives. If she’s never ready, then to journey with her is enough. If she always has a man’s body— well, that certainly didn’t stop him from falling in love so it’s not like it’ll make him fall out of it. His request is so simple— don’t fall in love with someone else while I’m waiting for you. Treat me gently and don’t be insincere. I can stay in this cage with you forever so long as it’s you and me and peace. Look, I’ll even brighten it up a bit.

This man is such a green flag, I love him so much!
(He’s smiling as she lives out one of her dreams to roll atop a mountain of gold and he’s just happy to see her happy)
