when I was little I was hardcore hyperfixated on fairies, like majorly, basically lived in a pair of cheap wire and tulle fairy wings until they fell to pieces
so I got a LOT of fairy stuff, and if you were a fairy kid growing up in Australia, you would probably recognise this art style
I used to own a puzzle book of these, each page a different jigsaw puzzle of stunning art, these are two examples, there were so many gorgeous little details in the backgrounds and outfits, things I likely never would have noticed if I wasn't paying such close attention to those little jigsaw pieces and trying to find their place, the one on the cover was one of my favourites
these were made by Shirley Barber, who just recently passed away at 88 years old
I don't know if her art was successful internationally, she moved here from England so I wouldn't be surprised if she was known there too, but she was truly the biggest enabler for any Australian fairy child, and I just wanted to take a moment to thank her, I played with that puzzle book more times than anyone could count, always finding new little details in the artwork, for a long long time when I thought of fairies I thought of Shirley Barber's fairies, of these gorgeous outfits and stunning scenery, she made them feel so real and alive, like we were peeking into another world, seeing a piece of a story
if you didn't know of her but you love this kind of art, I highly recommend looking her up, and if you did know of her, if you were a fairy kid like me, tell me how about your favourite artwork! tell me what she meant to you
