i loved you when we were both small with grass-stained knees and crooked teeth. i loved you under the elm tree by my house and the oak branches by yours. i loved you when we were twelve and gangly and strange. i loved you in the haze of of a flashlight under bedsheet forts.

i loved you when my grandmother died and i was so numb i could feel

nothing

but your hand on mine. i loved you crossing the highway to your house and i loved you while i was brushing my teeth. i loved you in the dark, and i loved you again in the light. i loved you when we were both angry and broken and scared.

i loved you when you ate the last piece of cake and grinned so wide you made my heart thrash in my chest like anything. i loved you in that moment between dreaming and waking and i loved you under the weight of the warm sun and in the watery light of early morning.
