Western Port Bay Musings

There are many things I love about Victoria’s Western Port Bay. What first comes to mind is the interactions with this unique coastline through the practice of surfing. When the larger swells of Autumn and Winter make their way up into the bay, it’s not unusual to find yourself parked along a back street of Shoreham a couple hours before high-tide, pulling on a wetsuit with the ground damp beneath your feet. The stroll through the campground and down the little single track amongst the wet eucalyptus and out onto the beach strewn with seaweed, is always enjoyable. It’s a settling moment before paddling out into the liquid walls peeling along the reef with the aid of a grooming offshore NW wind. 

In a lull between sets at Honeysuckle Reef, I like to look up and down the immediate coast with the hilly farmlands rising above to the west and Point Leo to the east. The silhouettes of surfers at the various breaks bob up and down as they stare out to sea in a meditative state. This habit orientates or places oneself within this coastal landscape. 

There is a certain charm and character to this stretch of coastline - a comforting and familiar feeling which is always present. This favourite and regenerative spot continues to draw me back ever since I first surfed here many moons ago.

£190 Million Boost for Eco-Friendly Industry Transition

Paving the Way to a Sustainable Future

In a major step towards achieving the UK's net-zero goals, the government has announced a substantial funding package exceeding £190 million. This initiative is poised to support industries across the nation as they transition to more sustainable, eco-friendly operations, simultaneously addressing the dual challenges of reducing emissions and energy costs.  

Transforming Industries with Cleaner Energy

The first part of this initiative involves the Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan competition, through which 12 winning projects have been granted a share of up to £6 million in grants. Importantly, these projects encompass diverse industries, ranging from pet food manufacturing in Yorkshire to ferry operations in Poole. The funding aims to catalyze collaborations and innovations in reducing emissions, particularly in areas beyond the UK's major industrial regions, which contribute to over half of the country's industrial emissions.   Expanding the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund Further boosting this green shift, the government has earmarked an additional £185 million for the next phase of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund. This fund is designed to assist companies in modernizing their operations to leverage cleaner and more secure energy sources. The investment targets a range of industries, including manufacturing, recycling, controlled environment horticulture, industrial laundries, and textile renting facilities.  

Energy Efficiency and Green Finance Minister's Perspective

Energy Efficiency and Green Finance Minister Lord Callanan underscores the significance of this funding. It not only facilitates the shift to more affordable and cleaner energy sources but also nurtures a sustainable and green-oriented industrial sector, safeguarding jobs for the future.  

Exploring the Winners' Plans

The winners of the Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plans competition exhibit a wide array of approaches to cutting emissions. For instance, the Shoreham Port Industrial Cluster aims to reduce emissions while improving local air quality, collaborating with local councils. The Industrial Decarbonisation for Northern Ireland (ID-NI) focuses on enhancing productivity in tandem with emission reductions, seizing the opportunities presented by a low-carbon future.   Decarbonising the Midlands Aerospace Cluster (DMAC) DMAC represents a significant venture that involves engaging with key players in the aerospace supply chain to identify and solve emission challenges within manufacturing processes.  

The Road Ahead

The Industrial Energy Transformation Fund is opening its new phase, thereby offering additional support for businesses to adopt energy-efficient technologies. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the government's commitment to investing over £12 billion in energy efficiency by 2028, with the aim of benefiting a broader spectrum of households and businesses.

Leaders from various winning clusters have expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative. Turkey Will Not Allow Ukraine's New Ships to Sail into the Black Sea? - Technology Org

Last month, the United Kingdom announced that it would hand over two Sandown-class minehunters to Ukraine. One will get the name of Chernihiv, the other – Cherkasy. However, it will not be easy for these ships to reach Ukraine, where they are definitely needed.

This generous British gift, which is part of the UK’s and Norway’s initiative, is intended to help Ukraine deal with the heavily mined waters of the Black Sea. Those Russian mines pose a danger to commercial shipping and Ukraine desperately needs to ensure the security of its trade routes.

These minehunting ships are not new – one was built in 1998, the other in 2001. But other ships of this class sail and serve successfully and efficiently, so they will definitely be useful to Ukraine. If only they can reach it.

Turkey has announced that it will not allow the Chernihiv and Cherkassy to enter the Black Sea, as this would violate international agreements on the use of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits in times of war. Turkey, of course, is a member of NATO and should follow a common policy with other countries of the alliance, but in this regard, international agreements are actually older than NATO itself.

When Russia in 2022 invaded Ukraine in February, Turkey immediately activated the 1936 Montreux Convention, effectively blocking the passage of Ukraine’s and Russia’s warships through its straits connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

Under this convention, warships of non-belligerents could pass through the Turkish straits even in times of war, so British ships could theoretically do so. However, if the ships sail to be handed over to Ukraine, Turkey considers them to be ships of a war country and will not allow them through.

Turkey has good relations with both Ukraine and Russia, so it is likely that Ankara simply does not want to damage its chances of negotiating with Moscow. Also, technically those ships have already been decommissioned by the Royal Navy, so they are now considered Ukrainian. They will have to wait to get to their new home ports and start clearing the waters of the Black Sea.

Sandown-class minehunters are quite small actually. One such ship is 53 metres long and has a crew of 34 sailors. These minehunters are built from fiberglass to be less magnetic when looking for mines in dangerous waters. Sandown-class minehunters are hardly armed – they usually have a 30 mm autocannon and some machine guns for self-defense.

Ukraine is the most mined country in the world and this problem is plaguing its waters too. The UK and Norway came up with an initiative to help Ukraine clear the sea to make shipping safer.

With a vision to reinvent Rye, a group of enthusiasts built their own distillery in the US state of Vermont. Since 2007, WhistlePig has been at home on a farm in Shoreham with over 500 hectares of arable land for growing rye and grain. The dairy barn became the distillery, the milk room became the whiskey bottling centre and the farm became a space for experimental whiskey. This was left to perhaps the youngest, most restless and rebellious team in the industry by visionary, founder and master distiller Dave Pickerell, who died in 2018. Together, they made WhistlePig the leading distillery for premium rye whiskeys in North America.

Their exceptional, flavour-intensive bottlings made from almost 100 per cent rye (only a minimum of 51 per cent is prescribed) are now also available on the German market. The complex WhistlePig Old World Rye 12 y.o. is the sum of three finishes. More than a decade in new American white oak casks was followed by a three-part post-maturing in Port, Sauternes and above all Madeira casks.

The construction of two (of six) twin towers at the old naval port of Shoreham, England.

If the war had not come to its end in 1918, boom nets would have been hung between these sunken concrete towers, full of locally excavated shingle, to close the gap in the English Channel to the ever presence of U-boats, and thus blocking the remaining gap in the naval blockade of Germany.

One tower that had been completed was towed out of Shoreham harbour for use in the Portsmouth approaches in May of 1920, becoming the famous Nab Tower of Benbridge. Its still there to this day.

The modular house is arranged over two levels with a timber clad box atop a black metal base. The clients’ brief was to capitalise on the beautiful sea views so the main living space and master bedroom are elevated to the first floor. With the sea views to the south a secondary outdoor area was constructed to take full advantage of the northern sun.

The prefab house is accessed via an external steel staircase leading from the carport whereby you arrive at a semi-enclosed courtyard. Vertical timber battened screens sheltering the courtyard provide privacy from the street while still allowing northern sunlight to penetrate deep into the house. The battens are a continuation of the board + batten cladding which wraps around the upper level and helps to achieve an intimate quality through variation of natural light and shadow.

Occupants are then directed into the main living space and it is here where the full vista unfolds. An open plan kitchen, living and dining extends onto the rear deck through a bank of floor-to-ceiling glass stretching across the width of the house. The kitchen bench extends through to the deck providing the perfect area for outdoor cooking and entertaining.

The Cheminees Philippe double sided fireplace is a stunning feature of the home and is used to subtly define the dining and living room spaces.

On the ground floor, accommodation for guests and the children is generous, as is storage for surf boards, wetsuits and holiday necessities.

Responding to the clients’ preference for bright colours, painted doors and a bespoke kitchen – which features a bright green splashback – are a bold statement against the more natural hues of this alternative dwelling’s exterior.
