universally applicable problem solving guidelines:
are you making up a guy in your head who will be angry at you for doing a thing?
stop doing that. the imaginary person who hates you should not be a determining factor in anything. "making a guy up to be mad at you" is a step below "making a guy up to be mad at" and it's not good for you.
are you denying yourself joy because of some arbitrary goal you are making yourself reach first?
stop doing that. you are allowed to be kind to yourself without needing to earn it, and putting things off for some nebulous "better time" to do them just means you won't ever do them. live a little.
if there is nothing stopping you from doing the thing right now, do it.
there are no workarounds for this you've just gotta do it. even if it sucks. especially if it sucks. sorry.

I've been trying to work up the nerve to at least give a little information about this, both because of embarrassment and anxiety, but we've run into more trouble and have a thousand dollar bill coming up in February that we're trying to save up for. My mom and I have lived with my abusive (verbally, emotionally and especially physically) grandpa since I was born and escaping that seems impossible for right now. We're just trying to survive. My mom can't get a job because he refuses to let her leave the house and I'm disabled. Anything helps, and please don't feel pressured. Thank you very much for reading.

Having a silent meltdown bc I rlly want to sleep but I don’t want to have to smother my curls in water and product before during and after my obligatory morning shower just to help them heal from the abuse of being laid upon for the length of (1) uneasy night’s rest and to look decent for the public so I’ll be treated normal and feel good abt myself. I have actual things I need to do before I go out most days and between insomnia and hair “care” I genuinely have no time for anything anymore and it’s killing me sm
#like legit I want to kms I hate how no product I find that works works unless I use it every single day so I need to buy it 70 times a year#like the buildup only has negative effects not positive ones#and like. curly hair gets ‘bored’ of miracle products and stops allowing them to work or some demented shit idk#I just want to look decent as easily as others do plz omfg#I can put my hair in a tight braid on a shitty hair day but it still looks fucking horrific and I hate having it tied in any way for more#than a few hours. I sleep uncomfortably just to accommodate the uncomfortable braids and buns I sleep in bc sleeping w hair like this undone#is a death sentence. I don’t get it what am I doing wrong that requires me to keep over washing#I don’t have days I can just stay home and let it look bad and breathe from constant washing. dry products are jokes. decent products#require moisture. research on hair bands and pillowcases for my specific kind of hair (whatever is even is… I can’t tell bc it’s such a#fucking mess all the time) is fruitless and I don’t feel like gambling my money away on multiple solutions I already do so w product#every other curly person I know is doing fine but mine r so weird and I had such a golden few last years and they just completely stopped#cooperating and all my childhood frustration and self hate from my hair is resurfacing I’m so so upset this is more than a full time job#cant even cut it bc it puffs out hideously. do I need to serially straighten it. semi permanently maybe.#at a stage rn where I’m so tired of my thankless fidelity to modesty and natural hair. cant find decent clothes can’t find ways to look#decent w the hair god gave me. when smth simple as an appearance causes this much grief. I want to give up so bad. I wish I could 😭#mine#I’ve been scouring the Internet I don’t know what to do :(#I ask fellow curly ppl for advice but they’re so useless? like they just. don’t even respond.#but lately it feels like nobody hears the perfectly clear words that come out of my fucking mouth no matter if it’s damn I’m tired of having#to short term fix my hair w a shower to the point of harm every morning to I will be absent x y z days to my dad fucking died give me space

Today I:
-made it up to campus for scanning even though I extremely did not want to
-took a spontaneous tea break with H&Al which was delightful
-had a call with someone about a potential artifact handling contract gig for a tight 2 week installation in late April and I hope it works out bc it would make me a lot of money in that short period of time which would be amazing
-picked up my meds. they took a while to be filled by the pharmacy this week which had been making me anxious so I am relieved to have them
-caught up with one of my cousins over text. he's in the middle stages of writing a musicology dissertation and it was good to hear how he's doing and share what's up with me after finishing
-did 20 min of yoga and felt stronger and lasted longer in the stretches of downward dog than I did yesterday

I can personally attest to the effectiveness of vinegar in treating mold. Bleach works for a while, but the longest lasting solution I've found was vinegar.
Thank you! We don't have any vinegar in the house, so tonight's solution will probably be bleach (because there is some in the garage), but if it starts being an issue again we'll try vinegar next time
Edit: looked up the bleach dilution ratio and according to clorox's website you aren't supposed to use it on unsealed wood? So uh. Y'all might be right that this is a vinegar kind of problem

I think we should all just post fuck tons of gifs and videos. Cost tumblr more money. That's a protest. Until our demands are met we will overload your shit, good luck attracting new users to a site that a) doesn't function or b) doesn't allow anything but text <3

Theres a lot of bike helmet discourse on my feed again and I'll weigh in just this once because this debate is really annoying from all parties involved.
Bike helmets are important and you should wear one. There is no good excuse to not wear a helmet. Also helmets are NOT the be-all and end-all to bike safety and its really tiring to see people in this debate pretend like it is. These two ideas can coexist.
Most cycling accidents that result in injury are two-sided accidents. Meaning there's multiple people involved, either multiple cyclists or a cyclist and another road user. Most of these two-sided accidents are cyclists getting hit by cars. Wearing a helmet in this scenario will greatly reduce the risk of injuries to your head, the thing where your brain is. So consider wearing one.
However, you're still greatly at risk of injury whether you wear a helmet or not. The part from your neck down to your waist is filled with very important organs and when you get hit by a car the part where you get punted is often that area.
So what does this mean? Wearing helmets is pointless cause you can get gravely injured anyway? No, not in the slightest. It means that the primary safety precaution to take to make cycling safer it to improve infrastructure for bikes and get them further away from cars, the thing most likely to kill you. However, that is a long-term solution that can't be implemented overnight in most places. So a short term solution would be the secondary safety precaution, wearing a fucking helmet cause doing something is better than doing nothing.

after a night and a half of looking through alternatives, seeing the long term timelines for hosting on other sites - I've got a formulated idea on how I want to tackle things.
I'm going to keep posting here as I have been.
(*Some) Posts will be mirrored to: bokumono.bsky.social (bluesky) bokujoumonogatari (Cohost) And this thing. Folks will get access to this once I have a moderately large translations repository to upload.
Tumblr media
*Some because the other medias have their own problems. I can't upload video to bsky and it has a 4 pictures per post limit like Twitter, and cohost is a newer social media (that yields its own bottlenecks).
The Thing is a bit unwieldy but it works for uploading pages as 10mb jpgs. Everything here gets posted as HQ pngs, fwiw.
(I also have invite codes for bsky should anyone want them.)

I think tumblr is going into a direction where it hates any way ai is implemented because its ai and i dont think that is a productive stance. Like you can criticize how its developed under horrible labor conditions and with little regard to the environment but this is not inherent to ai technology. It is perfectly possible to develop it while trying to do minimal harm to the environment and good labor conditions for the workers, but its not happening because it cuts into the profits of capitalist who are in charge of the development of ai technology. And tbh this applies to any piece of technology, from computers to water bottles. AI technology is already used for good purposes like aiding doctors to find cancer in mamograms and making art more accessible to physically disabled people but because its in the hands of capitalists it has the horrible shortcomings it currently has

What do you think about decreasing fertility rates and population decline? Should we be concerned? What is your solution?
i am very concerned. think it is potentially the greatest existential threat facing human civilization, especially alongside climate change. imagine populations collapsing, then civilization collapsing with it (due to all the pressures caused by a population collapse), then having a bunch of anarchic primitive societies trying to cope with climate change without the benefit of all our modern technologies (and that includes things like farming -- how many people actually know how to farm? and even more, how many people know how to farm without modern technology?).
with that said, i'm a futurist and an optimist. i believe we will overcome this hurdle like we've overcome all others.
as for what i believe to be possible solutions...
universal basic income is a start. more parental leave. reduce work hours and more remote work for a better work-home life balance. higher wages. affordable high quality daycare. family-oriented education and /actual/ family planning centers where they offer resources and info for having big families. educate people on why having kids is good, for individuals and society, and emphasize the risks of not having kids. fund movies and shows and books which are pro-family, pro-humanity, and pro-natalist. want movies that celebrate family and having kids and demonize people who are childless. being childless needs to be seen as cringe and only for losers. we need to change the culture generally. including in the education system and celebrities and the highest levels of academia. we need to be pushing pro-natalism. we need to encourage an optimistic, life-affirming national ideology through all of the institutions. also just education reform in general. make higher education great again, rather than just the "next step" after high school. and make it free for the truly qualified. and offer career education in other forms.
build walkable, family-friendly cities with more affordable housing. universal healthcare. financial incentives like tax credits per child or family loans for married couples where a portion of the loan is paid off for each child or even preferential loans for homes for extended families or something. meanwhile tax childlessness. invest in automation of menial jobs so we can increase wages and reduce work week. invest in robotics so we can have robot-servants who help reduce the burden of household chores and childcare. invest in artificial exowombs. invest in life extension technologies. encourage people to freeze sperm, eggs, zygotes. encourage space exploration and colonization. address climate change (for a multitude of interrelated reasons, not least of which is because many anti-natalists use it as justification for their death cult).
again, just generally speaking, we need to encourage an optimistic, life-affirming ideology. we need to show people that a better world -- one filled with hope, vitality, nobility, beauty -- is possible.
and, of course, join my cult (which encourages having children).
basically all americans should live as if they were the aristocrats of the globe. living lives of ease and luxury where they are free to hone their skills and virtue and raise future generations of world-aristocrats.
and we need to understand that degrowth, anti-natalist types aren't actually interested in saving the world like they pretend. they are anti-human, life-hating demons who are members of a death cult. they are the ugly and vicious enemies of goodness.

WAIT. just realized WHY the grass is always pointing towards the sun. you know how in like. game dev stuff people can make it so a model is always facing a specific direction??? i imagine airy did basically that with the grass, but towards the sun (though i assume that line of coding gets a little messed up when the contestants interact with the blades, causing them to no longer point at the sun)
