Multiple Births
Round 1 Poll 7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
* Walkyverse shared continuity : "Roomies!", "It's Walky!", "Joyce and Walky!", "It's Pregnancy!", & "Shortpacked!"
-> Sal and Walky from Dumbing of Age will also be in the competition
Read It's Walky
Read Jupiter-Men
Submitted context (including spoilers) and propaganda under the cut
Walkyverse : Were separated at birth to hide them from the Martians because of their genetic modification, and Sal became an edgy badass after her adoptive parents were killed by not-Martian Aliens.
Originally, it was believed that Sal was swapped with a baby from another family because she was the stronger of the twins, and therefore need to hidden more from the Martians. But their mom later reveals that that Walky is the stronger of the 2 and she sent Sal away as a red herring so the Martians would falsely believe Sal was the more dangerous one.
Walky acts like an immature goofball as a coping mechanism resulting from a repressed traumatic event during one of the many alien abductions during his childhood (spoilers here)
Jupiter Men : The Avalon twins are teen superheroes. Quintin is Gusher, with slime-based powers and uses them in innovative ways, and Jackie is Powerhouse, who transfers electricity into different kinds of super-strengths. They also have quite the troublemaking streak as inquisitive kids who are VERY eager to use their powers as they see fit: Quintin for hero and vigilante work, Jackie for convenience and party tricks. Their dynamic as a idealistic/creative brother and a realistic/witty sister is not only believable, but also fun to read, and refreshing as a duo that have their own distinct personalities and lives outside of just "twins" like some media fall into the trap of.

Some important questions about Mystique
As funny as these panels are, they also raise so many questions...
Tumblr media
Like, what exactly are the limitations of the types of material Mystique can shapeshifter from her body? Especially considering that in the past she’s replicated Wolverine’s adamantium claws to stab other people with?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those same claws which were easily cut-off by Logan's ACTUAL adamantium claws in the first live-action X-Men movie...?
Tumblr media
Speaking of questions about Mystique, here’s another weird artistic detail I’ve noticed.
While Mystique’s repeatedly said in the X-MEN comics, that her clothing is simply just a natural extension of her shape-shifting powers and is “always naked,” very similar to her live-action movie counterpart…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...whenever she’s depicted without clothing in the comics, Mystique is often still drawn with her forehead skull adornment. This even includes Krakoa’s resurrection protocols wherein all reborn mutants emerge completely naked from cocoons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, there some arcs like Get Mystique which have Raven discard the forehead skull during such scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So my overall question is this: Just what exactly is up with Mystique’s famous forehead skull adornment?
Is it another article of “clothing” she shape-shifts, or is it actually a part of her body? Or is it a mimicry of some kind of other substance like glasses or Wolverine's claws?
Just what is the secret behind that forehead skull adornment...?

Of all the things I love about Dumbing of Age (and Willis’s work as a whole,) the Superheroic Action Sequence As Vehicle For Character Development is one of my favorites. I loved the kidnapping arc! Was it realistic? Eh. This comic had a superhero. Do I care? Of course not. My all-time favorite moment they’ve ever written is “I die because I’m fucking awesome. (You die because you’re a shitstain.)” My second-favorite, though the last Shortpacked wedding is a close runner-up in third, is probably when across continuities, Blaine finally realizes that Amber is everything, without him. (Second link’s the strip that the first link calls back to, there, if you’d rather have it in chronological order.) Realism can get fucked if it spurs a good action sequence/defiant reason you suck speech.
One of my OTHER favorite things about Dumbing of Age is how Willis can give us a moment where a character gets to be totally awesome, and the audience cheers, and then a few months or say, three years down the line he pulls that moment out again only this time we get to see how THAT EXACT MOMENT seriously traumatized the character doing it, because we didn’t get a key piece of their perspective at the time and THEY are not viewing it as the audience. The classic for me is, of course, “Amber punches her shitty abusive dad in the face (and then as commenters at the time pointed out, smartly gets the fuck out of there and puts a bunch of people who try to deescalate things between him and her) -> Amber is horrified by her capacity for violence and the fact that she ENJOYED punching her shitty abusive dad in the face.” There are others.
And today, it’s Dorothy’s turn as we take the “Future commander-in-chief” strip from earlier in that arc and explore the idea that over the timeskip, Dorothy tried to capitalize on it… when it’s also the moment she left a man to die, and now she’s having second thoughts. (To be clear, he had it coming and there was likely nothing she and her fellow hostages could have done to stop it. Also, he was literally holding her hostage. But do you really think traumatic reactions care about that shit?)
*Admiringly* Damn you, Willis.

At this point, I’m basically just cleaning out my hard drive. Here’s a shot of Amber O’Malley from the #Shortpacked era. This was one of my first attempts at digital pencilling. You can tell that I did it the hard way. I’ve gotten slightly better at it over time… SLIGHTLY. . . . #Spacekrispies #fanart #webcomic #Walkyverse #DavidWillis #MyOldArt #AlwaysBeCartooning (at Distant Worlds Coffeehouse) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce4D1HRvRvc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I met Kevin Conroy in 2017 at a con and had the pleasure of explaining a webcomic joke so that he could sign it onto a copy of a game that really brought me closer to the character because of his portrayal. RIP to a legend.

propaganda under the readmore
Brigid O'Reilly: She used to be a detective investigating cloak and dagger but then was killed and empowered by both the dark- and light-force and came back as MAYHEM. where she focused on taking out (killing) corrupt cops. she used to view herself as, like, the vengeful ghost of brigid o'reilly before accepting that she and brigid o'reilly are the same person, pretending that brigid was dead was just easier for her to accept than actually dealing with her trauma. also look at her insane dyke energy
shortpack: He showed up in one comic as a member of like The Secret Agent X-Men run by Xavier and was left in the middle of nowhere to literally die. His fate hasn't ever been expanded upon we have to believe he died and no one bothered to bring him back on krakoa (as he is a mutant). He's silly he's the size of a doll he has ranged telepathy and his comic was a bit weird. Can we PLEASE have a win for the literal Little Guy? If he doesn't I'll put him in the microwave.

It’s been twenty-five years of Joyce!  That’s a whole dang quarter of an entire-ass century!  And so:
We’ve put a whole buttload of Joyce on a poster.
She’s been a college student, a SEMME agent, a college student again, and then a college student with glasses!  Just running that whole gamut.
This 11″x17″ cardstock gloss poster will be signed and numbered.  It’ll come to you in a big flat cardboard envelope.  Limited to just 75 pieces!  Get ’em while they’re hot adorkable.
