One thing I think many gloss over when it comes to Godzilla is the motivation and personality of each iteration, and how their design reflects that.
Shin is a being of pure agony, a living cancer that kills and destroys as much as it can out of pure rage and hatred at its own existence and those who made it be so. Over the film, it goes from what looks like a dead shark to a monster with razors for teeth and eyes of pure suffering and hate.
Minus One is basically hate personified, a monster that somehow manages to hold a deep personal rage against each and every individual member of humanity. It's hatred runs so deep that it commits actions just to terrify and kill. And it's design forces a terrifying glare, one so viscous you'd believe it really hates you personally.
Monsterverse is more of a disgruntled hero. He kinda gives the vibe of a dude who stands in the corner at a party acting like he doesn't want to be there. He has specific motivations in taking down particular kaiju, motivations that are often confused for attacks. He does what he needs to do and retreats back to the ocean when he's done. And he looks consistently miffed. A face that does lean into a menacing rage when necessary.
Classic goji is, like most iterations, an already existing being from the sea, enraged at the destruction of its home and mutation of itself. It has come to simply destroy, destroy all that has allowed this to occur. It causes hurt and suffering, agony and destruction all in its shared pain and rage. Its design is literally shaped like a mushroom cloud since, yknow, nuke mutation.

Whats your favorite Godzilla movie? I personally prefer Final Wars because of how crazy it is.
While choosing a definite favorite is too hard, I can give my faves from each era :]
Showa: Gojira. (Godzilla vs. Megalon is my 2nd, I love serious and un-serious gojis just the same.)
Heisei: Godzilla Vs. Destroyah, an emotional goodbye to my favorite Godzilla. Still can't watch it without crying lol
Millennium: GMK. Gave us the best Baragon design and a truly malicious Goji, love it
Reiwa: Minus One. With each time I see it, it goes higher and higher up on the list, the perfect goji movie for me :]

Well, the kaiju ship I ship most is Mothollante, but everyone’s already given their thoughts on that so yeah. Has a lot of the pros of Mothzilla with few of the cons, as well as the wonderful aesthetic of a genetically-engineered abomination and a goddess of nature. There’s also the obligatory puns about flowers and butterflies, and Mothra-based hurt/comfort and fluff which is one of my favorite kaiju fan plots.
Mothzilla’s… alright when handled in a certain way, but it’s a “the ship is fine but why is it everywhere” type of thing. And with the MonsterVerse especially, their relationship is better if it’s platonic. All in all, I don’t really ship it, unless a particular person’s take leans to the “humanity’s sins and nature’s virtues” aspect of both of them.
Gong’s pretty good. Tired old men being tired together.
Rodorah’s pure arson and anarchy and I value it for that, but no way is that dynamic anything approaching healthy. I ship it for the lolz.
I’ve jokingly shipped Legion from Gamera and Destroyah together before. Two big buff arthropod ladies.
Angzilla has the same benefits as Gong, really, but with more Showa craziness. I find Kongzillra to be a funny threesome, esp. because GvK would have been over in ten minutes if Mothra was there to slap some sense into Goji, to calm Kong down, and to alert the humans to Mechagoji/Ghidorah.
2MUTO is the kaiju ship I like second most, it gets points for being the only canon kaiju couple I can think of outside of the two OG Rodans, and also because I just love the MUTOs in general. Fr though, those two bugs were so sweet together, and I do think they had as much if not more chemistry than the human leads. Anyone who says that Femuto would have committed mate cannibalism on Hokmuto can face my wrath. MUTOs are clearly designed to fight, hunt, and live in pairs (therefore it makes no sense for her to kill and eat him), and it’s entirely possible they’re like crocodilians (i.e. female raises the kids and protects the nest, male brings her and the wittle babies food. Babies stay with the parents for several years until they can live on their own, and may stay within the parents’ territory for several more years. But now I’m going on one of my MUTO ecology headcanon rambles again…)
That’s all I can think of for now, have fun with these and have a nice day!
ooh this is a long one
- I think the funny thing about the hurt/comfort fluff is I only really like it with the Heisei Mothra. For some reason, maybe because she starts out as a larva, she always seemed a bit less like a goddess to me and more like a really caring person just fighting for what they love. While I read other Mothras as more closed off and unsure in social situations because of their attachment to world peace, Heisei Mothra feels more sociable and peppy, and thus capable of committed relationships
- continuing that, Mothzilla I have never really been a fan of, and I think Goji and Mothra being friends is far more interesting. They care so much and mean so much to each other, but it’s because they value their friendship, and neither of them have really had a relationship like that before. They started off as a business relationship and got closer over time, and I think their friendship is very sweet.
- Kongzilla is (usually) very relaxed old man yaoi and I like that a lot
- If you read my other previous ask about Rodorah, you’ll know how I feel about it. Very wacky very goofy very arson.
- Y’know what, I totally think Legion could get it. She’s pulled tons of arthropod ladies before.
- Again, relaxed old man yaoi, I like that a lot. For them it’s way more like, they’ve been friends for so long and have only gotten closer over time, and everyone’s wondering whether they’re official or not, and maybe they won’t say it out loud cause they don’t want the attention, but they are.
- I had a pretty brief Kongzillra phase and that was pretty fun. Mostly used for laughs and silly shipping dynamics where there’s no bad blood. They’re a power throuple.
- The MUTOs are so cute to me, the part where they meet each other in Chinatown, call to each other, nuzzle, and sync up their vocalizations when they kiss lives in my head rent free. It’s too bad Godzilla hates straight romance, because they were a very adorable and committed couple. (I also would be super into any MUTO ecology posts if you’re offering)
(this clip. this clip right here. the sound design, the cuteness, chefs kiss.)

Godzilla x Kong gets... probably a 7.5 or 8 out of 10 from me. I liked it a lot, but the last act felt like it was rushing (which should never be the case for a 2+ hour movie). The action was really good though and the visual effects, while dwarfed by Minus One, were excellent.
Spoiler-y opinions below:
Okay so- Kong's portions of the movie were actually really strong. Granted, I'm easily amused by anything that involves monkeys falling down a lot. But in all seriousness, you can tell they had the most story ideas for Kong. His fights are good, the monsters his arc introduces are cool, and the way they've aged his design is also pretty nifty. You will believe a gorilla can be daddy.
That said, the strength of Kong's part of the movie brings me to my main complaint. The other two focal points, Godzilla and the human cast really didn't feel like they had as much to do. Less so for the human cast, which I'll get to in a moment, but it kinda felt like Godzilla was sidelined.
Weirdly, that isn't to say he wasn't in the movie. Godzilla's scenes are almost as plentiful as Kong's, if not equally so. The movie, to its credit, does a pretty good job of giving everyone equal-ish screentime, so Godzilla does get plenty of scenes. The problem is that most of them are just him going from point A to point B to point C and so forth.
In fairness, Goji's scenes are at least entertaining. He gets some superb city destruction and the best fights in the movie (and it has plenty) are his. Though speaking of fights, I am disappointed that we didn't get to see any new-old monsters. Scylla is a cool enough design on its own that I don't mind it, but Tiamat is similar enough to Manda that I felt like SOME acknowledgement could be made. I mean shoot, just have them be called Titanus Ebirah and Titanus Manda on the computer radar thingie they keep cutting to. Problem solved.
At least we get Godzilla sleeping in the Colosseum like a cat. It's a cheap pop, but I'm still here for it.
The human story is decent, if nothing special. The only returning cast are Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, and Brian Tyree Henry. Dan Stevens joins them as... I guess Kong's veterinarian for lack of a better word, rounding out the quartet of focal characters. I don't know if I enjoyed his character or if he annoyed me. Hottle and Hall deliver more of the "constantly mildly uncomfortable deaf girl who just wishes everyone would leave her pet gorilla alone and her overprotective adopted mother" stuff. It was fine in the last movie, it's fine here. Henry's conspiracy theorist character is... less irksome than he could have been. While in the previous film he was a surprising amount of depth for the archetype he was portraying, here he's firmly in the comic relief role. It never quite veers into annoying, but there are parts where it does leave you going, "okay, but why does he need to be here?" He at least makes it out better than Stevens, who may be the world's first example of a token white guy.
All that said, the human plot was actually kinda working for me. The whole "lost civilization deep within the hollow earth that harnesses mysterious natural powers and also worships/summons Mothra" thing felt like a really fun tribute to the kind of story you'd see in the classic Showa Era films without being anachronistic.
As much as I complain, there was something I noticed beyond the movie itself that made me happy. The theater was packed, which is great to see, but more than that there was a ton of kids in there, right around the same age I was when I was first getting into Godzilla. The same age I was when I got picked on for liking it. I couldn't help but look around the theater after the movie and feel vindicated. I was right, this shit is cool as fuck. Suck my ass, Samuel from fifth grade.
Anyway yeah it's fun. Worth seeing.

GODZILLA MOVIE MARATHON: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)
Tumblr media
Ah, the twenty year anniversary of the big guy himself, celebrated with the introduction of one his most enduring adversaries in the doppelganger automaton: Mechagodzilla!
Mechagodzilla is a great character and deserving of his spot in the "Big Five." His popularity comes from his versatility and his status as a mechanical, artificial monster, but that's not really explored in his first outing. Instead he's kind of just a generic space monster, the whole robot double aspect really only mattering for an obvious twist that is revealed at the end of the first act. After that, he's just another kaiju controlled by cartoonishly evil aliens set to invade earth.
I will say though, despite the trope being hopelessly tired by this point, this is probably the best alien invasion plot since Astro Monster. Mostly held up by the Interpol officer, who adds some mystery to the first half and executes some fun spy action once the climax hits. Don't get me wrong, you're still just sitting here waiting for the monsters to show up like almost every other Godzilla movie, but it'll keep your attention until then, which is more than a good chunk of the later Showa era can claim.
Luckily the monsters do show up pretty quickly, in fact the first fight is at the twenty minute mark, where we get to watch poor Anguirus get wrecked. That's another appeal of the movie, it's not like vs Gigan or Astro Monster where the monsters feel unconnected to the human drama, here the entire plot is about getting the statue MacGuffin to Okinawa before the aliens can steal it and the prophecy ends. Keeping the kaiju in the forefront narratively and adding a ticking clock keeps the story jugging forward and prevents that sort of meandering boredom some of the worst kaiju films suffer from.
King Caesar in the man of the hour in this film, the monster they need to awaken in order to save the world from the wrath of Mechagodzilla. The movie is hyping him up and he gets a whole musical number to announce his arrival... only for Mechagodzilla to absolutely slaughter him. It's great, genuinely so fun to watch the guy we've been hearing about cower behind a rock until Godzilla shows up to do most of the work. It makes him endearing! Like a big puppy way over his head.
Mechagodzilla is the real show stopper here, the movie does a great job establishing his power by having him beat Anguirus and match Godzilla. This might be the first beam clash in the franchise, with Mecha-G's eye laser and Goji's fire breath meeting in the middle to cause a massive explosion, knocking them both out. That's where this movie shines, the fights are so fucking fun. No stock footage or clunky old suits here, it's all so fresh and dynamic. Mechagodzilla stands out in the Showa roster because his specialty is the full frontal assault of explosive fury. He has missiles and lasers coming out of every orifice and joint. His fighting is so colorful and exciting, especially contrasted with Godzilla's more physical fighting style. Plus what a finisher! Godzilla rips his head clean off, no ambiguous falling into the ocean here, we got to watch a fatality.
Overall a really good movie that encapsulates everything that we love about the Showa era, with one of the best villain kaiju battle in the franchise. It's not quite the top of the list though, not hitting the highs of King Kong vs Godzilla or Godzilla vs Hedorah in my eyes, more matching the vibes of the last movie, so it'll get a similar 7/10 score from me.

Back from Godzilla x Kong! Gotta say, I love how you have this dynamic of... Mothra is Lawful Good, Kong is Neutral Good, and Godzilla is Chaotic Good. Because sure, Godzilla is officially the arbiter of nature's balance, he's the one keeping things in check; But boy does he not care about what he needs to do to get it done. I like how the Monsterverse has made Godzilla into quite the anti-hero as well; It's a nice mix of both heroic and villainous depictions. He has no real love for humanity, even if he begrudgingly acknowledges its right and need to exist.
If Godzilla needs to get from Point A to B, it doesn't really matter to him too much if there's a fully-populated city he needs to stomp through, especially if he's on short time (Conversely, Mothra and Kong seem much more sensitive to that sort of thing, Mothra especially). It really does make Godzilla feel like a wild card that humanity just has to accept and deal with, and coexists with uneasily; You know, in theory, he has your back. But you're still rightfully terrified of Godzilla, and hell so are other titans. He's the scariest kaiju on the block for a reason, and I love how he's still a mean city-destroying menace while technically being a 'good' guy. Portraying Goji from Kong's perspective, where he's often an antagonist, was a good way to maintain that terror that was alleviated with King of the Monsters' depiction.
Also, I can't help but imagine how relieving it was for Jia to find more Iwi! Trapper makes a good point about how she ends up having a lot of weight on her shoulders with saving the world, but you know what? She ends up having so much other weight taken off knowing there are other Iwi alive and thriving. For years, Jia must've been saddled with the burden of keeping her entire culture alive, finding a way to somehow preserve it and keep it going; But now she can relax, she knows it'll live on with or without her, and that makes Jia's decision to stay with Andrews all the more natural because she's free from obligation.
You know, seeing Monarch successfully augment Kong with cybernetics... I'd love to see the Monsterverse tackle Gigan soon, because with how technology has become so much more advanced since the first film in 2014, it feels plausible that some would see the success of Kong with the gauntlet and think; Hey, let's bring back that project full-force! Maybe they find Gigan, originally flesh and blood, deeply injured and torn apart after fighting Godzilla. Initially he's on life-support with artificial organs, but at some point investors decide, let's just reprogram him into a cybernetic attack dog to defend humanity with!
Alas, Gigan breaks free of his programming; And he ends up going on a killing spree. Because while other antagonists like Ghidorah or Skar King are ambitious warlords, Gigan is a pettier sadist, a bully who likes to hurt and torture. He kills for sport, and that's literally all he's going to do once he gets his upgrades, doing it all for no other reason than fun.
Of course, another part of me would really like to see Gigan still associated with aliens, too; Monsterverse has clearly become modern Showa, we've basically got magic now! And I like that, the weirder and more fantastical, the better. There's an underground civilization that uses ancient technology bordering on magic, the Iwi of the Hollow Earth are like the Monsterverse's Seatopians. So it seems a natural evolution to introduce a more one-to-one counterpart to Seatopia in another film, another group of Hollow Earth humans who want to destroy those on the surface, and worship Megalon's power to tunnel through the earth itself. And if you have Megalon, you should have Gigan, and if you have Gigan, you may as well throw in aliens, not just in the sense that they're from space like Ghidorah, but I mean like. Actual UFOs and the like.

Another recent submission planted an interesting thought into my head...
What if- after Ozzy gets cleansed of the parasite- it's HIM that initiates Genocide. He's the one that knows the true extent of what the Cordies are capable of, and to see humanity thinking to use them as a weapon hits somewhere deep and personal. Not to mention, his greatest fear after coming back would be in regards to all the horrific shit Xenilla planted in his minds, chief among them being his plans for his little brother if the hive ever got a hold of him...
Not to mention, as established by another ask- he is in no condition to fight, at all. He's so weak that humanity probably would be able to kill him if they came to blows. So now Goji and the rest of the titans are caught between the one they just bent over backwards to save and the rest of their planet.
It makes sense that a surviving Ozzy would be just as likely to initiate Genocide as Goji; the Genocide Route not a scenario I particularly favor, but the pieces line up for it to happen and all it takes is a few human idiots thinking they know what they're doing with an alien fungus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pffft, for some reason all I can imagine is a mixture between Invasion of Astro-Monster's Showa shenanigans and Long Night of Solace in Halo: Reach... the latter of which didn't end well for the planet Reach. Suicide mission indeed. Imagine Goji's expression when Abraxas breaks it to him that humans don't have the technology to get just one Titan into space, let alone multiple.
"...they don't?"
"No."
"But didn't you tell me humans have gone to the moon?"
"They have. But those rockets are for people, and I can't imagine how big a craft to fit you would be, let alone the cost in money and resources to build it."
"...ah."
"...if it makes you feel better, I can go into space without a craft. Probably. No time like the present to test that. What's it gonna do, kill me?"
"Please don't make jokes."

Ok, had time to watch one of my favorite Godzilla movies (cause I have no favorite, just a mix of ones that I like more than others, but can't decide which one is my definitive favorite). It was Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, the one with my favorite version of Mechagodzilla, Kiryu(that one figure I got recently). This one is probably one of the first Godzilla movies I've watched when I was a kid, this and it's sequel, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, which adds Mothra. The timeline for this movie is essentially just a sequel to the first Godzilla movie back in 1954. But it's also the 27th(28th if you count the American "Godzilla" movie from 1998, which most don't cause it's not a Godzilla movie despite the name, can elaborate more if you want to know) movie in the franchise. The human story is pretty good, following Akane as she is the lead protagonist, and eventual pilot for Kiryu. Though she has guilt for accidentally getting a few people killed by Godzilla when he first shows up, she eventually feels like she has a purpose in fighting Godzilla through Kiryu.
While Mechagodzilla's origins were originally that it was made by alien ape people to conquer Earth(way back in 1974-1975 at the end of the Showa Era), the second(Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II, 1993 Heisei Era) and this Mechagodzilla(2002 Millenium Era) were made by humans to counter a Godzilla who was antagonistic to humans. And this one was made with the bones of the 1954 Godzilla:
Tumblr media
(Yes I took pictures cause why not)
Though, this ended up causing some issues when first fighting Godzilla. Because, although its maser cannons in its mouth had caused Godzilla to retreat, Godzilla's roar had triggered some memory from Kiryu. So basically, ghost Goji wakes up and decides to go rampaging.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, also, they transport Kiryu with two special jets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is for the reason that Kiryu has the con of having limited battery life. He can go for 2 hours, or less I'd the Absolute Zero Canon is used, which takes up to 40% of the battery. So, two hours after Kiryu goes berserk, he powers down, leading to another character, Mr Yuhara(who helped with the making of Kiryu through his experience with DNA-robotics stuff, also a single father and possible love interest to Akane, though it's kinda unclear if they actually do get together because of the sequel) trying to figure out why it happened and how to prevent it from happening again.
Some time happens, the issue is fixed, Godzilla shows back up and apparently is heading towards a hospital that hasn't evacuated everyone yet. Kiryu is released later than when Godzilla made landfall because of the doubts that arose from the previous rampage, but is launched. When they're almost there, they release Kiryu in the air, using its jet rockets to fly faster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And full body slams Godzilla before he can fire at the hospital.
Much fighting later, Kiryu does this funny maneuver
Tumblr media
When Akane is about to shoot the Absolute Zero Canon, Godzilla gets a good shot off and knocks Kiryu down, and the blast of the weapon hits some buildings instead. It also disables the remote control access, so Akane has to go inside Kiryu to manually control it, but first they have to drain power from Tokyo so that they can recharge Kiryu who ran out of power.
But after that, Godzilla knocks Kiryu down again by shooting Kiryu in the back. And tries again, but one of the other jets shoots Godzilla, causing him to shoot at the jet instead. The jet then gets lodged in Godzilla's mouth, which supposedly means that he can't shoot his atomic breath anymore, giving Akane a chance to use the Absolute Zero on Godzilla. But Akane doesn't want to kill the pilot while he's stuck in Godzilla's mouth, so while she has it prepped, she makes Kiryu ram into Godzilla, get the jet out of his mouth, and fly off with Godzilla. She made Kiryu clamp a hand on Godzilla's mouth to keep it closed, and they fly into the water, where she fires the Absolute Zero. It causes the water surrounding the area they entered to both splash up and also instantly freeze.
Turns out that it partially worked, with Godzilla getting severely injured, his chest has a gaping wound and his left arm is limp. But Kiryu is also very damaged, missing the right arm that was holding Godzilla's mouth shut, and the Absolute Zero Canon being damaged beyond repair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah, I love this movie, as well as it's direct sequel.
If you have any questions, I will gladly answer them. I know I kinda just glanced over a few things that were somewhat relevant, but also could have been a bit confusing.
I forgot to answer oops
That's quite interesting! I'm glad you had your fun ^^
Can you elaborate on the not-godzilla Godzilla american movie thing? 👀
How does that movie end btw, they're both damaged and say that's it let's stop that fight?
Sounds like quite the nice and epic movie!

ggojira
gojira ,  the japanese name for Godzilla,  is an icon that has existed many years. Starting in 1954 when he was created he was a dinosaur change by radiation in his first movie he was a reference to the nuclear bombing his destruction was simular and skin made to look like radiation poisoning victims.  The Gojira seen in that movie  was a combination of suit and model usage Eiji Tsybura  helped with special effect so he was able to use that suit modified in his show Ultraman as Jirass Gojira was very popular and continues to exist today. He exists in merch television show and movie Depending who ask youll get a different answer for number of Gojira movie. Id say 38 and let me explain. 29 japanese movie  3 animated 4 hollywood movie  And two movie about  to be released Minus One a japanese one schedule to hit american theaters December first and another hollywood Godzilla VsKong next year. Japanese movie have different continuity often separated  by which japanese era it was produced in showa from 1954- 1975, heisei  1984-1995, millennium 1999-2004, reiwa 2016-present day Its to be noted not actual era just somewhat reflective My favorite gogi is heisei era gogi which my favorite film is heisei,  godzilla vs biollante 1989  , biollante is my favorite kaiju, japanese word for monster often used by americans for giant monster My second favorite film was produced during reiwa, shin godzilla 2016 codirected by fav director Hideaki anno wh also director for my favorite anime, Neon Genisis  Evangelion   Most continuity have a different origin. For showa it starts with evil goji but ends with hero goji I kept this to a bare minimum so theres a lot to learn if Interested this is just what you have to know for stuff to make sense Ill gladly explain  anything

Favourite Showa Goji (or Goji-adjacent, like Mothra or Rodan) movies?
i mean i have to stump for the og goji 1954 movie. really just a great film exploring war and development of weapons that still has a lot to say.
one of my Personal Faves is godzilla vs megalon, which is somewhat unpopular but i think it's a lot of fun and also the gay romance of the century. it's about two guys who live together and build a robot to help godzilla take on a giant bug monster sent by a civilization of people under the sea.
and i think godzilla vs hedorah and ebirah horror of the deep are underrated gems too! fun in different ways. and i like both the mechagodzilla movies.
gamera vs barugon is probably my favorite showa gamera movie.
and mothra is a good movie too! it's catholic :)

i've just started dipping my toe into the godzilla catalog, and i'm curious how much the latter day remakes draw from the showa era films? do any of them really embrace the heroic kaiju stuff from the middle era? we're just up to ghidorah the three headed monster, if that's useful context
Unfortunately Toho seems to view the attempts to market towards children with the Heroic Goji with a decent bit of shame.
Rather memorably mandating that in the Heisei Era Godzilla HAD to act just like an animal. Altho Heisei Godzilla did have some moments that could be argued to imply a more heroic and sympathetic streak before showing that Goji WILL become that in its final shot
Final Wars despite being a loose remake of the movie where Godzilla fully embraces being a Kaiju superhero, FinalGoji bases itself more on the Heisei era angry old man who fights anything characterization.
The Godzilla CGI Vs. shorts have a heroic Godzilla in a grittier setting which is cute.
Godzilla the Animated series is something that very much aims to capture that era of film’s overall setup, and that Godzilla is so unapologetically a big scaly superhero
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus makes a heroic Godzilla by sheer fucking accident and seems entirely unaware of how benign that Godzilla is written.
The Monsterverse, very much attempts to capture Showa Goji’s heroic characterization in the first 2 movies. Before unfortunately abandoning that in the Wingard films
One of Godzilla’s main strengths has been its flexibility, what Godzilla is and represents has been redone several times with interesting variations on the formula. I deeply hope the next films push what Godzilla can be in some interesting and fun directions
I have no clue what is going on Godziban.

So with the rewatching of the Gamera movies. I decided to give my opinions on the whole Showa Era.
Gamera (1965)
The place where the turtle began. Originally created by Daiei to combat the popularity of Gojira/Godzilla. No friend of the children here... well besides one kid he saves mid movie. He starts as a city destroying Kaiju awoken by missles and bomb testing during the cold war and begins to terrorize the people of Japan. He nothing goofy or kid friendly in this movie and it's pretty good.
Gamera vs Barugon (1966)
Gamera's first enemy Kaiju gets introduced here and it continues the feel of the first movie. Gamera isn't a friend of the children just yet He's kinda just there along with Barugon to be a villain. It is one of the first times however that Humanity and Gamera work together to stop the threat of Barugon. The movie itself is also pretty good but not as rememberable.
Gamera vs Gyaos (1967)
In this movie we start to lean a little more into the friend of the children route and also get introduced to the Kaiju that would be Gamera's main rival like how King Ghidorah is to Goji. Gyaos is a much more rememberable villain to Gamera and puts up a good fight as well as being the first Kaiju to make Gamera bleed (Back to my knowledge). Another good entry in Gamera's roster.
Gamera vs Viras (1968)
Continuing with the friend of the children route but also showing that they were making these movies for cheaper and cheaper... this movie is not that great. It does however introduce for the first time an American character as one of the boys gamera saves. The movie relies heavily on footage from Barugon and Gyaos to pad it out for Viras to learn the weakness of Gamera (it plays just about all of the Gyaos and Barugon fight). It also adds in the "mind control to turn against the humans" plot for these movies for a little longer then it should be. I'm not the biggest fan of this movie but to each there own
Gamera vs Guiron (1969)
My favorite movie of the Showa Era. Being introduce it and most of the Showa Era with Mystery Science Theater 3000. This is also the first to mostly take place on an Alien planet and also includes my favorite villain Guiron. Basically big knife head boi and he crawls. It also is the first reappearance of Gyaos with Space Gyaos which is Silver instead of brown with redish bits. It also relies a little on recap footage but does not have as much compared to Viras namely for the alien face to learn about gamera to prepare to face against him. I still love the movie and it's still my favorite movie in the series. Also this is wherethe funny acrobatic turtle scene is from.
Gamera vs Jiger (1970)
With the Japan world fair/ expo 70 happening at the same time as filming it is essential the main location for a good bit of the movie. Gamera's villain in this movie Jiger is an interesting Kaiju. With the ability of Super Heat Waves that with sound make people sick and can dissolve particles and leaves skellingtons of peoples. Jiger also has the ability with his tail to impale Gamera and leave a baby of himself in him to block his windpipe. The kaiju action is cool and has some funny moments and also has one of the grimmest deaths of a villain kaiju.
Gamera vs Zigra (1971)
One the movies I forget the most and with this rewatch... I have been proven right. It's just as bad if not worse than I remember. They drill in the friend of the children story line way to hard to the point that with the past few movies the kids were older... this time the kids are kindergartens. The movies goes for an ocean pollution story message which I'm fine with cause at the time and still now it's an issue. An Alien ship from the planet Zigra with its 2 passengers, a space woman and the kaiju Zigra come to take over the world to make it their new home after their original planet got filled with pollution and sludge in the oceans that they lived in. Most of the movie focuses on the spacewoman chasing the 2 kids after they escape the spaceship and has the weirdness that is a chase through parts of Sea World... no not Orlando Sea World, Kamogawa Sea World. Also the kids I swear are the worst part of this movie, they never stop messing with stuff and are basically always there for the "friend of the children" stuff with gamera, I know they're young during this but they look like they'd rather be anywhere else then on this film until the characters do something that leads towards them being in danger. It takes about half the film before you meet Zigra and he is a shark like Kaiju and honestly... They're kinda meh imo. This film would've been the end of the Showa Era... but Daiei was running out of money and was about to go bankrupt and as a last ditch effort... 9 years later.
Gamera Super Monster (1980)
I had not even heard of this movie until a year or so ago. The last film of the Showa Era Gamera and the Showa Era of Kaiju films in general before the Hesei Era began with Godzilla 1985. And it no joke has a ripped off Star Destroyer recreating the opening of of star wars episode 4. And ripping off Superman and Ultraman with 3 alien superwoman outfits. Apparently they are hiding on Earth and the ripoff stardestroyer people are after them. Also while there is friend of the children stuff in it the children feel more like the comic relief. And while I know the recycling footage is somewhat common in the Showa Era. This movie is about 80% recycled footage. Any time there is new footage it's not really not good and the low budget really shows with the really choppy edits especially heading back to footage between newer shot and the past movie footages and when it's not weird shots between new and old they treat the old footage like news footage. Also any new footage of our turtle boy Gamera looks like he is a parade float or something. He's extremely stiff with really only mouth movements for roars and sounds. Also the new "Gamera March" imo is way worse then the one before it. It just doesn't sound that good at all. I'll give Daiei one thing, they atleast "tried" to make the past kaiju fight footage make sense at certain locations. Like Zigra happening and Viras happening right after... i say as reviewing this and we have literal anime mid movie with gamera in it. The movie could've possibly turned out to be maybe interesting but well... Gamera Super Monster happened instead. A sad end and death to Friend of the Children Gamera... no joke he actually dies at the end.
For my official ratings on which movie is better.
1. Gamera vs Gurion
2. Gamera vs Gyaos
3. Gamera vs Jiger
4. Gamera
5. Gamera vs Barugon
6. Gamera vs Viras
7. Gamera vs Zigra
8. Gamera Super Monster
We'll start the Hesei Era Gamera films after we get back from the Con me and my wife have this week. But hopefully you guys enjoyed my part review part rating

I have finished the Showa era of Godzilla. Honestly this was so fun. I didn't go in any real order and some movies didn't work for me, but this was still worth it all. I look forward to rewatching certain installments in the future and for now I just would like a break from kaiju films. But not for long. Until next time Goji.

GODZILLA MOVIE MARATHON: Godzilla vs Megalon (1973)
Tumblr media
Oh hey, remember when I was doing this? I am at the whim of my hyperfixations and, luckily, I'm in a Goji mood again. So it's time to pick up right where we left off a year ago and keep this marathon going.
We're deep in the champion series, where Godzilla movies were made every year for Toho's annual movie festivals, which meant cookie cutter scripts and shoe string budgets.
The script is pretty standard by this point, except with the aliens replaced by hilariously incompetent Atlantians. It gets the job done ok, it keeps itself relevant and is relatively entertaining, even if you're still spending most of the runtime waiting for a rubber suit monster to show up.
Speaking of monsters, the plot mainly revolves around a little robot by the name of Jet Jaguar. He spends most of the movie getting yanked around by whoever is in control of him till he inexplicably against consciousness and joins the battle for good. He's an obvious Ultraman rip-off, but he's also a cult favorite for his goofy design and his antics. He gets a lot of love from fans, Evangelion even references him in the Jet Alone episode, and it's easy to see why. He's not the strongest, but he's got spunk, character, and a catchy theme tune. You can't help but love him.
The same goes for the other debut creature, the titular Megalon. The Kaiju in this movie have so much personality, Megalon especially is super expressive. I love his child-like personality, where he gloats and taunts when he's winning but throws a tantrum when he isn't. He cackles and claps and slaps his butt, and despite having no facial expressions, he might as well be talking with how well the suit actor portrays his thoughts. My favorite is his obvious "what the hell" pose when Jet Jaguar and Godzilla escape his fire trap. He's also ridiculously pathetic, dumb as bricks, he ultimately gets knocked down by swallowing one of his own bombs. I love how he just lays there while Goji and JJ just stare at him with contempt. Even his final departure is hilarious with him face planting into a hole as it collapses onto him.
Gigan also makes his return, as cackling and sadistic as ever, and he matches Megalon's energy perfectly. They really do make a perfect duo, real team rocket energy of bumbling bafoons thinking they're badder than they actually are. Gigan's justification for being here is the best, the Atlantians straight up just call the cockroach aliens from the last movie and ask to borrow their monster. Sure, why not?
And of course, Godzilla is here too. He's a full on children's hero, accentuated by the goofy circus music that plays as he walks up to the battle. He's got some cool moments, like singlehandedly stomping both Megalon and Gigan when he first arrives and of course the iconic tail-slide kick.
Overall, many people lump this movie in with vs Gigan as the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the franchise, which I think is unfair. They're both similar movies in that they both live and die by the final battle. While vs Gigan had a really slow, boring fight that really didn't justify having to sit through the rest of the movie, vs Megalon has one of the most fun final battles in the series. If you can sit through the rather tediousn, but not all bad first hour of human plot, you get 20 minutes straight of some of the most expressive and enjoyable Kaiju action of the Showa era.
Interestingly, for some reason a US executive decided this was going to be the Godzilla movie to grab that American demographic, and it was marketed and distributed far more than nearly any film before it. While not an immediate success, it did result in this easily becoming the most common Godzilla outing in video rental stores and late night TV reruns. It shaped Godzilla's image in America more than any other film, for decades the name was synonymous with cheap costumes, goofy effects, and bad dubs. Even to this day, the Monsterverse's take on a heroic Godzilla fighting evil monsters has its roots going back here. Some people may hold resentment towards it for that, but for me personally, I really enjoyed it. It's not the best the Showa era has to offer, but it's certainly up there, so 7/10 seems fair to me.

Something I’ve noticed during my Godzilla movie marathon is that Goji never eats people. We’re just flat out not on his menu at all. He doesn’t actually have an interest in humans. He only intentionally kills humans when he’s being physically hurt by them or when he thinks they’re going to hurt him. Also, at least in the showa continuity, Japan is apparently a natural Gojira habitat. They belong there, and don’t understand why so many weird tiny apes are suddenly building these massive obstacles on their homeland.
