Dee and Austin's showmance works as a plot point because it isn't some sort of situational fling. They are willing to communicate to preserve their relationship and to incorporate it into their strategies. A lot of the time, showmances are an obvious weakness, as people veer too far into the emotional side of survivor and forget the strategic side.

This isn't the case with Dee and Austin. Even if their relationship doesn't end up being some big Boston Rob and Amber love story, their showmance showed that they are each skillful communicators and smart strategists.

The difference is that they didn't let their relationship steamroll their games, rather they incorporated it and used it to their advantage.

Shawn and Niall's public dating history doesn't match the themes and narratives of their songwriting

Mannn… if you actually take the time to look at Shawn’s and Niall’s dating history…. Where are these passionate songs coming from if you buy into the general public narrative 😭 Shawn’s literally supposedly dated 2 people 😭

And it didn’t start until 2017 😭 which albums are typically written A YEAR AT LEAST before they are released. Shawn Mendes Self Titled was released on May 25, 2018. Illuminate was released on April 20, 2017.

And then he’s singing about hoping someone will be by his side and being with someone “who cares if they approve”…. The media and fans were wanting him and C to get together… where are these obstacles of being together 😭

Niall’s dating history is so weird, like, don’t even get me started. It’s so full of PR and short bursts of being with someone?? Women who have even issued statements and denied when asked that they were anything romantic??? Where are all of these passionate songs coming from?? Who is he showing up at their door soaking wet? Where are these obstacles??? Wedding song???

Why is he needing to tell someone there’s “no judgement” (it’s romantic with a “mate and… you know”. No, it’s not about Harry please stop?) when they’re together??? Who is he missing so much he needs a “new angel”?? This Town: Who is he saying “if the whole world was watching I’d still dance with you” about”?? Why wouldn’t anyone he’s been with be accepted???

There’s so much that begs to be said about all of this. Shawn invalidating his whole discography (saying it’s all about Camila???) in his documentary still makes me so incredibly sad. That doesn’t make any sense. It doesn’t all line up, nor do the themes match up with his life history with her. Please 😭

Make it make sense. 🤨😭 whomever made him say that had no idea what they were doing. They expected the fans to just blindly accept what came out of his mouth.

I have talked with his fans who believe that he was writing so many songs about her… and to believe it, you have to think that he’s just sitting on the sidelines for years just pining away for her while she’s with other guys??? That doesn’t even match with his songs???

I know I’m going back and forth between the two but there’s so much of Niall’s that don’t make sense either. It starts with Barbara Palvin, who was starting out her modeling career who was connected with Niall in 2013-2014. If you don’t think he stunted, then what’s this?

Amelia Lily (yup another Amelia) 2011-2012. There’s later an article about her DENYING anything went on and that she was actually dating an electrician dude.

He was connected briefly with Ellie Goulding who would greatly benefit from the clout boost in Aug-Sept 2013. Meh. Standard music industry stuff.

Melissa Whitelaw, an Australian student, Feb-June 2015 so says a DM article. There’s papwalks complete with the weird backseat photos. Her looking out the window while Niall is awkwardly trying to cope with what he’s being subjected to, see below.

And there’s Celine Helene Vandycke, yet another student. This time she’s Belgian. They show up at events with his arm around her shoulders. They’re only together about a month or two in 2016. Again, here’s the customary car backseat photo published in DM.

And then there Hailee Steinfeld, in 2017-2018. Niall never confirms it but there’s really awkward (while walking across the street?? Like??? Wtf???) kissing pics that exist. She wears his merch. She shows up to a m&g during his tour. They “breakup” then the narrative is she released a song called “Wrong Direction” but denies it’s about him. (Great PR move, Hailee.)

Then it brings us to Amelia Woolley, pandemic lockdown lady. Met in Apr 2020, UK lockdown started in Mar. Dramatic story how they met in tabloids. Niall tore her away from her electrician boyfriend. They now do papwalks and she shows up at golf and events. Everyone forgets about her.

So….. I repeat…. where’s the kind of longterm love along the ways that’s sparked their work and matches the themes of their songs??? Please let me know if you find it???

And yes I know there’s some typos, the timeline also isn’t exact. But that’s the thing about these “relationships” that are arranged. Dates are messy because no one actually knows them. 😂

how do you get over someone you are in love with and know you cannot have?

i have been having this strange relationship with this man for about four months now. we played opposite eachother in a musical where we kissed on stage MULTIPLE times a show (7 kisses a show to be exact). we are professional, and while we had electric chemistry, those kisses were never more than a stage kiss. although that’s what it should have been. there were a few times, especially at the end of our run where those kisses were real. and trust me an actor knows when they are real kisses with real intent. i am GOOD. AT MY JOB. i have never let a romantic relationship on stage alter my actual life and feelings until him. he made it too easy.

i have had some incredibly intimate moments with him (not sexually but just actual intimate things). him buttoning my cuffs for me, him comforting me as i mourned the death of a friend, us ‘cuddling’ backstage and opening up to one another.

he’s one of my closest friends, most trusted confidants, and huge inspirations. i truly love him, and have for several months now (the show ran in july and august). he is absolutely my dream man, i struggle to find a flaw in him.

the catch? he’s 16 years older than me.

this has made me utterly miserable with our relationship. i am almost absolutely certain to feelings are mutual but both of us are unwilling to breach societal expectations and personal values/preferences because of the age gap.

i have always been into older men (MTL exists, after all), this allowed for a lot of embarrassing jokes with my friends. but it’s not a joke anymore. what started as “i have a silly stage crush on X” has turned into “i do not go a day without talking to him and find him in everything i do”.

i lay in bed MISERABLE about how he is the right person at the wrong time, and the right time will never come for us. i think i have to distance myself from him or else this pain will never end. but the idea of doing so makes me physically ill.

what do i do?

this is all real. it sounds like a fan fiction trope. this is my real life.

And That’s What Your Really Missed S1E3 Acafellas

So I started listening to Showmance and those old recap episodes and what I thought would be fun is to listen to Showmance’s coverage of episodes before the And That’s What You Really Missed one comes out. That way I’m really able to hear the difference or lack thereof that nearly three years of distance makes for Jenna and Kevin. I can’t promise to do a summary like this for every episode but I listened to both podcast eps on Acafellas today so here goes my recap of two recaps.

First off, Jenna and Kevin are doing an A/B/C plot structure from now on instead of a scene-by-scene recap, which I wholeheartedly support. It flows much better and cuts the awkwardness by at least 30%. They talked about dreading it but have a better opinion than they thought they would, and I can confirm they were overall less happy about Acafellas during their Showmance episode. Even back then they highlighted the Mercedes plot being the best part, including Bust Your Windows.

What was new/different:

They talk about being in Australia when Acafellas premiered, something they didn’t touch on at all in Showmance. Recounts of nights out, hangovers, and the enthusiasm of Australian fans.

John Lloyd Young, who played no-thumbed Henri St. Pierre was Lea Michele’s boyfriend at the time. Did not know that.

Cheyenne Jackson was supposed to play Dakota Stanley but got the flu. He later went on to play Dustin Goolsby.

More of an appreciation for the adult storyline - well, not appreciation. They just get it more why the show decided to have a Will/adults A plot. Even in Showmance they talked about these early episodes playing to established strengths like Matt Morrison’s boyband past.

They mentioned less of the Unholy Trinity’s/Quinntana’s scheming here and in Showmance they noted how cruel they were for setting Mercedes up for failure. They also didn’t spend as much time talking about the Sandy of it all.

Some of the talking points touched on during both podcast episodes:

Shelby Shum being one of the Vocal Adrenaline dancers.

Kevin and Amber bonding over loving Jazmine Sullivan and suggesting they covered her songs.

They highlighted the Quinntana duo and Naya having more to do during both eps; in Showmance they lamented that Dianna and Naya didn’t get to act together as much later on. Big mood.

Overall I think they talked more about Kurtcedes in Showmance as well but they again emphasized how great a friend Mercedes is and how big a deal Kurt’s coming out was. Also talked about Amber and Hemo melting blowing everyone away with their singing/dancing respectively.

Shit we found on TikTok:

This one was strange, it was just a TikTok pointing out funny side character names in the credits like Super Gay Warbler and Other Gay Warbler in season 6. No real commentary on it other than it’s funny.

The TikTok segment still feels unnecessary but I like the flow of the pod better now. I also don’t know if this is a very recent thing but Kevin’s audio is decidedly better than it was at the beginning. They might have recorded this one at the studio. They teased this week’s guest episode at the end and I can only assume it’ll be Mike O’Malley. Could be Dianna based on the Preggers buildup and Chris already having guessed but they mentioned the Kurt plot of the next ep, not the Quinn one, hence my Burt guess.
