yall ever think about remus finding out that the they call it the shrieking shack literally because of him? because i do and i get upset every time
There is a common assumption that I’ve seen circling that Snape “had his suspicions” about how Lupin was a werewolf before the shrieking shack incident. There is very little evidence for this claim, and substantial evidence against it.
The basis for this claim mainly seems to come from Lily’s comment during the conversation between Lily and Snape in The Prince’s Tale, where he tries to hint at Lupins werewolf nature and she tells him how he knows his theory but doesn’t believe him. What is often ignored however is that this conversation is after the prank, with Snape already forced into silence by Dumbledore. It seems to me that Snape has been trying to hint at her the truth about what happened to him by presenting it as a ‘theory’ that has occurred to him, rather than something which he knows by experience.
The marauders themselves believe that Snape knew about Lupin’s condition because of the werewolf incident. Remus says that Snape was interested about were they (plural) went every month. Which makes sense, as they were his bullies, and he would look for any kind of leverage he could use to force them to stop. He also says “and from then on, he knew what I was”. Reffering, of course, to the incident.
Some say that it is likely that Snape would have likely guessed, due to his intelligence. After all, Hermione was able to deduce it, and she had much less incentive than Snape to figure out. And Snape is at least as intelligent as Hermione. What is often ignored is that Hermione had a lot more clues. Snape had used the class where he was a substitute for Lupin to teach about werewolves, which was a big hint about Lupins true nature. Snape also was not interested in only Lupin’s monthly disappearances, but rather all the marauders. While if you observed a single student disappear every full moon, you might conclude that he was a werewolf, when four students disappear this becomes less likely (are they all werewolves? Surely not). The other marauders acted as a red herring. Hermione only had Lupin to observe disappear.
This theory really needs to die. It essentially requires the belief that Snape was either a moron or suicidal, and there is no evidence for either of those beliefs.
““Show yourself!” Snape said, tapping the map sharply.
It stayed blank. Harry was taking deep, calming breaths.
“Professor Severus Snape, master of this school, commands you to yield the information you conceal!” Snape said, hitting the map with his wand.
As though an invisible hand were writing upon it, words appeared on the smooth surface of the map.
“Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people’s business.”
Snape froze. Harry stared, dumbstruck, at the message. But the map didn’t stop there. More writing was appearing beneath the first.
“Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.”
It would have been very funny if the situation hadn’t been so serious. And there was more. …“Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor.”
Harry closed his eyes in horror. When he’d opened them, the map had had its last word.
“Mr. Wormtail bids, Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.”
Harry waited for the blow to fall.
“So … ,” said Snape softly. “We’ll see about this. …”
He strode across to his fire, seized a fistful of glittering powder from a jar on the fireplace, and threw it into the flames.
“Lupin!” Snape called into the fire. “I want a word!””
Harry Potter spin-off idea: a home renovation TV show where some unsuspecting contractor is asked to turn the Shrieking Shack into some horrible rich couple’s ostentatious, open concept, ‘forever home.’

This one’s a little longer (*coughs* it’s easier to write when it’s you hehe). Also being embarrassed over the mortifying ordeal of being known. It’s fine… 🙈
Remus and Ariel talking over Christmas plans and sneaking out to the Shack together~ No lime, but lots of blushing. 💚
Squinting in the fading sunlight, Ariel was in bed, blanket wrapped tight, studying over last minute notes. She didn’t want to be caught without answers tomorrow. The Hufflepuff dorm was bustling with people running up and down stairs, most yelling about break plans. Stretching and changing positions, she looked at the timekeeper nearby and realized she had missed dinner.
She had a habit of getting too focused and forgetting to take care of herself. That nap everyone had recommended never came either, even though she had been in bed most of the day. Pulling her glasses off, Ariel leaned back, sighing. After seven years, she should really be better at this… Laying the back of her hand over her forehead, she realized was running a slight fever.
Resting quietly, Ariel evened her breathing, trying to relax. In a few moments, hoots sounded nearby, however, with the delivery of a envelope directly onto her face.
Bolting up, Ariel saw Aphrodite, Sirius’ owl, hoot loudly and perch on the end of her bed.
Why would Sirius be sending me mail this late at night?
Ripping open the seal, she found it was not from Sirius, but Remus instead. With a small grin, she snuggled into the blanket and read:
We haven’t had a chance to talk about everything yet and I didn’t see you at dinner… Most likely studying for tomorrow, if I know you~ But if you’re free, meet me in the cloisters in half an hour. Bundle up to stay warm, but I’ll bring everything else. Please send your reply back with Dide.
Rolling over, Ariel reached into her side drawer for a quill and scrap of parchment, replying that she would indeed meet him. Having tucked the note in Dide’s foot pouch, she pet under her beak and smoothed out her feathers.
“Good girl. Back to Remus now, okay?”
With one last coo, Aphrodite flew off, leaving Ariel to prepare.
At the appointed time, Remus and Ariel met, creeping quietly through the corridors, as not to disturb anyone. Curfew hours were less strict for 7th years, but sneaking away together was still enough to make Mrs. Norris suspicious. Remus had his map out when Ariel arrived, his gaze directed precisely where she was walking from.
“Hi~” Ariel picked up her pace to meet him, heart beating faster as she neared.
Remus pulled her into his arms, smiling into her neck.
Settling into the embrace, Ariel let her guard down, relaxing into his warmth.
“I missed you…”
“And I you.” Remus leaned down to kiss her forehead, noticing how warm she was, even in the frigid temperatures. Slipping his hand up, he frowned as she leaned into his touch, humming at his cooler hands.
“You feeling alright?” Remus leaned away, meeting her eyes.
“Eh…” She shrugged, cheeks flushed and warm.
Still worried, Remus took her hand, planning to keep an eye on her as the night progressed.
“Stay close. I’m going to take us somewhere special.”
Raising an eyebrow, she gave a questioning look, curious.
“You’ll know where we get there. Don’t be scared.”
“That’s not comforting, darling~”
He laughed and slipped an arm around her waist, kissing her temple.
“Alright, I’ll tell you. It’s the Shrieking Shack.”
Ariel’s mouth popped open and she froze, wide-eyed.
“Isn’t it haunted? I was surprised when Jenna said they had used it for the prank…”
“Prank??” Remus raised an eyebrow, turning back towards her.
“I’ll… tell you later. Long story.”
Chuckling, Remus led her to a nearby bench and sat down.
“I suppose I should tell you before we go then…”
With a long sigh, Remus took her mittened hands in his own, not dropping his gaze.
“You remember I told you about having to transform? About how I have to go through the werewolf changes when the full moon is up?”
She nodded, holding his gaze in return.
“The shack is where Headmaster Dumbledore arranged for me to transform, so that I wouldn’t hurt any of the other students. It’s the only way I was allowed to come to school… Before I came here I was alone. Isolated… But now, because of the Shack. Because of Dumbledore. I can be here… I can try to be myself, regardless of the wolf.”
Softening, Ariel dropped her gaze, nodding.
“Alright… If that’s what it is to you… I’ll go. I trust you, Remus.”
Cracking the edges of a smile, Remus leaned down to catch her gaze once more.
“It’s not actually haunted, you know~ Just my howls on the wind. People assumed it was ghosts instead of a full-grown werewolf~ Suppose it’s better that way.”
Ariel nodded, a little scared, but trying to be brave for Remus. Going to a “haunted” shack in the middle of winter as night was falling didn’t strike her as very safe. Remus was always the more adventurous one… Taking his hand, she followed as they trudged to the edge of the grounds, approaching the whomping willow. At their approach, the willow’s branches raised, poised for an attack. With a swift flick of his wrist, Remus threw a bludger-sized object at a knot in the tree.
With his raised wand illuminating the darkening area, they could now see a small doorway at the base of the tree, the branches no longer on attack.
Ariel raised her wand as well and walked alongside Remus, following an underground tunnel for a few solid minutes. At the end of the passageway, a set of stairs led upward. Raising his hand, Remus conjured a ball of flames, brighter than the lumos charm, and extinguished his wand with nox. Once up the creaking staircase, Remus led Ariel to the living room. Within sat an old couch and table, a piano, a bed, and assorted tapestries and furniture.
Beckoning her over, Remus sat his bag on the table, turning and sending his flames to lamps around the room with his wand. Immediately, the room rose to a pleasant temperature and shadows dispelled from the creepy corners. Ariel sat down next to Remus, staying close as he dug into his bag and produced a box of leftovers.
“Ruby let me take this from dinner. Said she knew you hadn’t hardly eaten all day… She really does care about you.”
“Awww… Oh… She’s wonderful. Always watching out for me…”
Producing utensils, Remus handed them over and wrapped an arm around Ariel. She ate quickly, starving after only having a bit of breakfast in the morning. With some calories and energy finally in her, she felt much better, headache and flush subsiding a bit.
“I hope Kaylee’s doing alright… I completely forgot to go check in. Hopefully they got released…”
“I’m sure they’re fine… You’ll see them tomorrow. Madame Pomfrey likely set things right.”
Nodding, Ariel set the box down and settled into his arms, cuddling close as Remus spoke again.
“She’s the one who brings me here each moon cycle. Madame Pomfrey, I mean…”
“She does?” Ariel mumbled from where she was smushed into his chest, not wanting to move.
“Mhmm. Takes wonderful care of me. But I suppose. Maybe she’ll want Christmas off…”
Remus frowned, looking distant and worried.
“What do you mean??” Nuzzling up under his jaw, Ariel waited for an answer.
“The full moon… It’s on Christmas day this year. That’s why I said it was a bad time to go home… Honestly, my parents prefer me staying here anyway. Then I’m not putting anyone in danger back home.”
With a sad hum, acknowledging the truth of his words, Ariel slipped a hand under Remus’ jumper to warm her hands. He laughed, looking down at the bump under his clothes.
“You could just ask me to hold your hands~”
“They’re coldddd, this is the easiest way without making you freeze too~”
Slipping under another layer, Ariel grinned as Remus yelped, finally feeling her cold hands.
“Sorry~~” She winked as he shivered, pulling her hands away.
“Give those here!” Taking her hands in his, Remus shook his head, cheeks flushing.
As they waited for her freezing digits to warm, Remus softened, locking eyes with her…
“Would you come find me, Ariel? After transformation this time? I don’t want to spend Christmas alone, but I have no choice… Would you wait and celebrate with me after the moon?”
Ariel lit up, holding his hands tighter.
“Of course, Remus… And. I’m good at healing spells and taking care of people. I-I can take care of you! If you don’t mind…”
He shook his head, smiling softly.
“I… Don’t usually let others in until I’ve cleaned up a bit. The wounds are quite nasty… But I’ve seen you in action, Ariel. I want you to be the one this time… I know I can trust you.”
Leaning forward, Ariel found his lips, kissing gently and taking her time. Letting go of her hands, Remus wrapped his arms around her waist tightly, holding her close as they kissed. With small squeaks, Ariel pressed into him, blushing bright red. They hadn’t done anything like this before. The first time they’d really been alone was the Prefect’s bathroom the other night. Now it was just the two of them, hidden away.
Letting their hands wander, each explored a little further, curious, but not wanting to rush things. Tugging at the edge of her jumper, Remus pulled it over her head, Ariel reciprocating. Shyly, she tugged at Remus’ first shirt button, undoing it slowly with shaky hands. As Remus stepped in to help, Ariel tugged her shirt off, cheeks flushing bright red. Laying back against the couch, Remus opened his arms, pulling her tight to him. Ariel had gotten shy again, embarrassed by the thought of taking it further.
“Can… We just cuddle like this, Remus? I don’t feel like anything else…”
Her cheeks burned as he kissed up her back, slowing as he reached the base of her neck.
“Of course…” Remus didn’t want more either, just to be close to her. Twisting around, she nodded, pressing her forehead to his.
“Thank you.” She breathed the words in only a whisper, settling in again.
Arms around Ariel’s waist and chest, Remus kissed her shoulders and rested his head by her neck, sighing. Being close to someone for a change was soothing—all warmth and softness. Ariel giggled as Remus kissed her neck, shivering and leaning back into him. Resting on his chest, she wanted to fall asleep listening to his heartbeat… Just as she was drifting off, Remus nudged her awake.
“Darling? We should be going… Don’t want to be late for exams. Or make anyone suspicious…”
“Mmmf.” She groaned and sat up, running a hand through her hair and grinning.
“You’re right… But I don’t wanna go~”
Remus smiled, leaning over to kiss her.
“We’ll be back here by Christmas~”
“That’s true~ Christmas and cuddles~
With a quick kiss to Remus’ shoulder, she leaned down to grab their clothes. He was so cute like this— all freckles and long legs and warm hands~ Getting up slowly, she redressed, pulling her coat and gloves back on too. Remus replaced his layers as well and extinguished the room’s flames, renewing his lumos charm. Even closer than before, they snuck back to Hogwarts, checking the map every so often for obstacles or observers.
Finally arriving at the Hufflepuff dorm without incident, Remus pulled Ariel in, kissing her warmly. With no resistance, she melted into his arms, returning the kiss. Something had changed tonight. Everything felt stronger—more intense. Ariel was more hesitant than usual to let Remus go. Her stomach tugged when they finally parted, filled with the sense of losing something necessary and precious. Remus felt the same, wanting to stay, but knowing he had to return to the Gryffindor dorms.
Remus brushed her hair back, grazing his fingers gently across her scarred cheek.
Ariel did the same to Remus, playfully rubbing his scruff before stepping back. With deep sighs and one last look back, the two parted ways, eager for the next time they could be together again.
