open starter for @shrikestart
"I swear it's not what it looks like," Mingyu defended himself with a rare pout on his features. The boy was on his knees and had found himself elbow deep inside the bottom compartment of a vending machine. "It took my money, but the can got stuck. What do you think? Should I shake it instead? I don't want to lose my arm for a dollar, but that is my coke." He paused as he quickly glanced around the area. "Maybe you can keep watch while I shake it? I already banged on the glass earlier and people were giving me looks. I should start marking my bills so I can prove I paid for things."

open starter for @shrikestart from paulie vincent. takes place in downtown shrike heights, late at night. please use beta editor!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
paulie stops in his tracks as he spots another person and notices that their gaze is on him. he isn't the kind of person who normally initiates conversation, but just because he's a quiet person, that doesn't mean that he's incapable of being social. he sighs before he speaks; just because he can start conversation that doesn't mean he necessarily wants to. "i know it's late, i know i should be getting home, that's where i'm headed." he readjusts the guitar case strapped to his back. he's had one too many resident of the town tell him that it's unsafe out at night; funnily enough, if they hadn't all stopped him, he'd already be safe at home. he doesn't know if this person was even going to warn him, too, but he feels the need to get ahead of them, just in case.

"God, marriage is so overrated. I mean at first I thought it was slightly romantic but now that I see the type of people who buy expensive engagement rings? Consider me anti-marriage." She let out a sigh as she took a seat across from someone without even checking to see if she knew them. She was a professional at starting up conversations with anyone and everyone. It was usually a 50/50 chance of whether they got up and left or not but she had met a lot of people that way. It was what made her broadcasting job worthwhile in the long run. It also made for less time being in her own head which was always a touch and go option.
"Like I kid you not, at least three guys came in today looking like they were the most miserable guys in the world buying engagement rings. I mean imagine thinking you've found the love of your life and the thought of marrying you makes them actually look like they're sick? I would rather be alone forever. The only redeeming moment is when the most gorgeous older woman you've ever seen comes in and buys herself jewelry. Or nervous teens with crumpled up dollars buying something for their new crush. That's sweet. But marriage? Sounds like it sucks. Anyway, thank you for letting me talk your ear off. Can I buy you something to make up for having to listen to my rant? I really just needed to let that out."

- location : high scores
"Oh, you've got to be fucking kidding me.." William said, almost putting his head in his hands as he looked at the high score on the pinball machine. The score was definitely, definitely not his, despite the fact that he had been here almost every day before work, trying to beat his previous score. It was stupid, to be as annoyed as he was over getting beaten out on a random pinball machine, probably by some kid, but it was near the top of the small number of achievements he had under his belt. "Well, I doubt I can beat that.." He added, with a sigh.

Groaning, Leo looked up from the counter he'd been resting his head on when he heard someone walk into Key of Reason. He'd been resting his head there to stop the room from spinning, his long hair splayed out in front of him; luckily is view had been blocked from the door by a display, so he doubted the customer had seen him. Last night Leo had had a bit too much to drink (okay, a lot too much to drink), and now he was paying from it. At least he no longer felt like he was going to die in the immediate future, but he definitely didn't feel good. Luckily it had been a particularly slow day, so he hadn't had to deal with a lot of customers apart from a very annoying child who so clearly had no interest in music and had only been dragged there by his parents, who were convinced they had the next musical prodigy (and they most definitely did not, Leo was sure of that). As the customer approached, Leo ran his fingers through his long hair, and while he could keep himself from frowning, he couldn't quite muster a smile. "Hey," he greeted the customer. "Welcome to Key of Reason. Can I help you with something?"

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry," Ocean apologized, feeling mortified. He'd been walking kind of absentmindedly through the mall, not really paying attention to where he was going and feeling a little spacey. Just a few minutes ago, he'd gotten to Art Murmur, his new place of employment, only to discover that he had his schedule wrong and wasn't actually supposed to be there. He didn't really know his coworkers well yet, so he felt foolish when he realized his mistake in front of them. So now Ocean was just walking through the mall, trying to find ways to kill time until his ride got there to take him home (he'd tried calling, but it was sometimes difficult to reach people at the commune during busy times because not everyone had a telephone). And now Ocean had run into someone, nearly falling over them. "I'm really sorry," Ocean apologized again. Sighing, he ran his fingers through his hair, and Ocean continued, "I feel like today is a day when I just keep messing up. Can I buy you a coffee or ice cream or something to make up for it?" The last thing he wanted was for someone else today to think he was an idiot.

"Oh jesus," Reagan groaned as she started to wake up, her eyes taking a minute to adjust as she tried to figure out where the fuck she was. It had been a blur of a night that had started with drinks at Julio's had turned into hanging out with a group of people she hadn't met before but they had some good stuff on them and there had been a cute guy giving her the attention she was craving that night. It had gone from the mall to the wastoid club where Reagan was too well known at by this point. But at some point she had parted ways with the group, black out and always a wanderer. But instead of making it home to her own bed, she had woken up on the grass outside of where people lived. She rubbed at her eyes as she finally sat up, the sun greeting her as she heard footsteps coming towards her. "Uh can someone tell me where the fuck I am and what time it is? And for the love of god does anyone have a cigarette?" @shrikestart

This wasn't what Copper had expected when he took the job at Shrike Aquatic Centre and Spa Service. He'd been hired as a lifeguard for the outdoor pool, but that wasn't what Copper was doing now. His coworker had had to leave for...some reason. Had they even told Copper? Truthfully he was only half-listening. Normally Copper wouldn't have been so rude, but he had had a sleepless night (insomnia rearing it's ugly head again), meaning he was more than a little tired. Whatever the reason, Copper was currently manning the front desk at the spa, and he only knew enough about how appointments and such worked to not make a total mess of things - though barely. Looking through the appointment book, Copper asked, "I'm sorry, but what were you here for again?" There were different services the spa offered, and Copper didn't remember what the patron had said. Sighing, he apologized, "Sorry, this isn't my normal job, plus I've only been working here a few weeks." He was doing his best, but Copper was already looking forward to when his coworker returned and put a stop to this disaster.

bent over with his body at a near ninety-degree angle , elbows leaning against the counter , nose in a book , iggy straightened up quite abruptly when he noticed a customer in the corner of his eye . " how's it going ? " he asked , though even as he spoke , his eyes were still scanning the last words of the sentence on the page . luckily - for the sake of iggy keeping his job - the paragraph was completed in mere seconds , and he was able to look up and properly tend to his customer . " ooh , " they immediately took note of how many items the person was bringing up to the checkout . " today's been such a slow day , " they explained their reaction to them . " i've only had two customers in the last hour , and they both bought literally a single item each , " the customer hadn't asked for such details , but clearly iggy had been caught in a bored and restless state . " thank you for finally giving me something to do , " they chuckled , reaching for the first item to scan . " huh , i've never tried this before . is it any good ? "

Davis was still getting used to life in Shrike Heights. After all, it had only been a week since he'd been here, and his life was drastically different than it had been back in Boston. Before he'd been a military man respected by both the army and his family. Now he'd been honorably discharged, so the military definitely still respected him, but his family was another story. Thousands of miles from the place that was no longer home, Davis felt a bit adrift. He'd been here before to visit his grandmother before she'd retired to Florida, so the town and the house were somewhat familiar. But everything was so different, and Davis hated the way that made him feel. He'd only been working at the mall for a few days, so whenever he could, he walked around, getting to know the place; maybe if his workplace felt more familiar, he'd be a little more comfortable.
Knowing the mall better would have definitely come in handy in the situation Davis found himself in now. It was near the end of his shift, and he walked into the store with the stolen item in his hand; someone had just tried to shoplift it, the clerk calling security, and Davis was pleased he had managed to find the perpetrator and retrieve the item; at least he could do that right. "So I got it back, but the guy got away unfortunately," Davis said as he approached the clerk. But then he paused, looking around - this was the wrong store. "Uh...you're not the person who called me, are you?" he asked, feeling embarrassed. He didn't know what store he was in, nor did he know where the store he was supposed to be was located. "Dammit," Davis muttered under his breath. "Sorry," he apologized, "I guess I need to learn my way around a little more."

Location: Early Morning (like 3am to 6am) at Late Riser
Tagging: @shrikestart
"Early morning or late night? Just so I know whether to say good morning or good night." Apollo smiled at the customer who had just walked in from behind the counter. At a certain point of the morning, Apollo didn't schedule anyone to be on but himself. There were a few occasions, especially near the holidays where things got busy enough that he did but for the most part, the earliest morning hours were slow. Usually truckers who didn't need more than some eggs and toast and black coffee or already hungover partiers who needed something in their stomach before finally heading home. Half of the time they never finished their food so Apollo tried not to go overboard. So it was just him, taking orders, cooking the food, cleaning up the tables. He had put his favorite Billie Holiday record over the speakers and he was completely in his element. "Any questions or recommendations?" He set down a water on the table with a straw as he waited for a possible order. "Feel free to take your time though, obviously we're very busy so it may take a while for me to get back to you," he joked, a timeless and countless joke of his that always made him laugh more than anyone. "Also if you want anything more than water we've got some coffee and juice, i'm changing out the soda machine at the moment but I could have that too if you want it right now."

open starter for @shrikestart from honey wozniak. takes place in town square, early sunday morning. please use beta editor!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
honey finally snaps out of her daze when she notices someone nearing the small market stall that she's hosting this sunday market, one of many occupied by commune members, amongst others. despite her mind previously being consumed by her concern over being so close to the bloody scene reported in the news recently, she shakes it off quickly and she readjusts a few of the jam jars in front of her while engaging with the other. "good morning!" she greets them. "enjoying the market so far? do you care to try any of our jams?" she asks them as she ensures all of the handmade labels are facing forward, presenting them with all of the different fruit options.

𝕃𝕠𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟: Flour Power Bakery

"Good afternoon, what can I get you today?" The question was paired with a beaming smile, his hands already starting to point out different kinds of pastries in the display case in front of him. "We have cream horns, or a classic carrot cake, some simple, but delicious, blueberry muffins..." A slight blush rose to his cheeks as he continued. "Um, I have also made these-" Jae gestured at a plate piled with small, square shaped cookies. "They're called Yakgwa, they're, like, a popular pastry in Korea, so I grew up eating these a lot. I'm not really supposed to sell them, though, so you could try them for free if you'd like. They taste like honey and ginger. Oh! But we also have donuts or other kinds of cake- What's the occasion? Is it a celebration or just something for lunch?"
Okay, he should maybe allow for his customers to actually respond to his questions and take time to breathe, but he'd been bored out of his mind until a minute ago and his enthusiasm was stronger than his self awareness.

POSEY & SHRIKE
Open starter for @shrikestart, located inside of Shrike Mall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Oh, hey, no, it’s okay baby bunny, it’s okay, don’t be scared.” They speak into a mostly closed over cardboard box, stopping in their tracks to place it down gently on the bench seat that they had almost passed completely. Shuffling sounds come from inside of the box, and if their words have been heard, its contents are obvious - concerning, perhaps, but obvious. “It’s okay little guy.” They reassure him, squatting down and reaching in carefully to try to soothe the animal with warmth. “Sorry,” they finally speak to the person sitting on the other end of the bench, reaching up to brush their messy hair away from their face; they look as dishevelled as anyone might after rescuing a wild animal in need of help. “I found this little guy in the parking lot. His mom’s a goner, I don’t know why they were out around all the cars, and he’s so small- take a look if you want, but be careful not to frighten him, he’s freaking out just a little.” The bunny is doing much better than he was when Posey found him frightened and alone, at least. “Thankfully I’ve done this before,” they tell them, volunteering more unasked for information. “But I think I’m gonna have to call out of work and head up to LaPaws for supplies instead.” They pull their hand from the box again now that the baby rabbit seems to be calmed. “What do you think? What should I name him?”

𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: the black cat 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: open @shrikestart
—— it was technically drew's time off, but they liked the atmosphere that their work had, and they hadn't really made too many friends to justify going out — so sometimes they would come in and sit behind the counter, entertaining whoever was on the shift after theirs. other times, when they were especially bored, they would grab one of the tarot decks from the shelves and give impromptu readings that made absolutely no sense. but customers seemed to like it enough. it was on the house, they said, as if they had the right to charge for services they offered without having any expertise whatsoever. "hey, want a reading?" they decided to ask upon seeing a face in their peripheral, fanning out the cards and offering an impish grin. it was an older deck, released seven or so years prior, but it was still stunning. "free of charge. unless you're keen on buying me some ice cream if it goes well."

@shrikestart location: some random cafe out in town, sorry i am uncreative af.
Her nose twitched as she considered the dessert display by the counter, one gloved hand coming up to rub over it immediately afterward. She had already placed her order, a gingerbread latte for ‘Nora’ — not exactly close enough, she pondered but she chose not to correct the barista, but didn’t have much to do besides swaying in place in the packed cafe and basking in its warmth before she would have to step outside again. As she heard ‘her name’ called in succession with someone else’s, she made her way to the service counter just as the other person was leaving, clearly in a hurry.
She stared at their back as the shop door closed behind them before reaching for the styrofoam cup that was left, feeling the warmth of it even through her thick gloves. She was about to take a sip before her eyes caught on a name that wasn’t hers. Realising that there must have been a mix-up, she swore under her breath and hastily left the cafe in pursuit of the other person. When she stepped out, she looked around until she spotted them once more and began pushing through the crowd to reach them. Once she was close enough, she reached out, her fingers barely grasping the back of their coat, tugging slightly. “Hey,” She said, embarrassingly out of breath, her cheeks red with exhaustion and her wind-ruffled hair falling into her eyes. “Um, you’ve got my coffee by accident, I’ve yours.” She lifted the cup in her hand as proof, then, finger quotes and all, tacked on, “I’m “Nora”.”
