So okay, now that I’m getting success with a couple methods of growing mushrooms, I’ll post a little about that as I had said I would.

I still haven’t even taken them that many times - but I could just tell right away that they were good for me and my brain, and I wanted to make them a regular part of my life, and I didn’t want to have to mess around trying to buy them from someone.

I started researching how to grow them, and found that there is a large and very helpful community of amateur mycologists. The main places I looked were Reddit, and this mushroom message board called shroomery. I would say the people on Reddit are nicer although the shroomery people maybe do more deep dives into science stuff, using agar and other advanced techniques I haven’t even touched yet.

I also found out that growing them can be relatively simple and inexpensive. Although there’s tons of info out there, some of it conflicting, and plenty of “intro kits” that are expensive and, I believe now, overly complex.

I decided to start off with these all in one grow bags I got from Mycohaus.

They have grain (rye berries) which is what the spores grow on, and then once they’re colonized enough you mix them into the substrate, all without even opening the bag. You can fruit them in the bag or transfer them late to somewhere they have more room.

This really couldn’t be simpler - you get a syringe with spores or liquid culture, inject into the “self healing port” and wait for the mycelium to appear. I decided I wanted to do it this way because, although it’s kind of expensive to get those bags (and serious mycologists think they’re bad because then you don’t have to learn sterile technique?) I wanted the best chance of actually growing something my first time.

Spores: You can buy spores via a bunch of online retailers. As long as they are for “microscopy only” and there’s no discussion about cultivation, all fine.

You can also get liquid culture which is a liquid with initial mycelium in it - this is actually illegal because once it starts growing, it has become illegal…but the place I got from has all these disclaimers about how this is “isolated” mycelium that has been tested and contains no psilocybin/other active compounds. As far as I can tell, that is some sort of loophole language that is not true.

I got my spores from “millywyco” (google if you want to find them) and then graduated to liquid culture from inoculate the world.com. LC is more expensive but starts growing faster.

These grow bags worked amazingly. I’d say I’ve churned out about 140g dry weight. A moderate dose is 3g…micro is 0.1-0.5g depending on who you ask. I inoculated them with spores in mid January, they started fruiting April 3, first harvest April 8 (once they’re really growing, they grow fast). They are still fruiting.

So…that’s really all I needed to do to be set for ages. But I am now addicted to growing them, obv. I want to try every strain. I want to try different methods of growing.

So next up is the “uncle Ben’s” method in which you inject stuff into these sealed bags of shelf stable cooked rice!! On the one hand, it’s easier and cheaper cause you can get these bags anywhere. On the other hand, it’s harder cause it’s a little more contamination prone (you have to open the bags to make a air exchange hole and then cover it with micropore tape, and stuff can get in while you’re in the process of that). You also have to prep your own substrate by pasteurizing it, unlike the grow bags which are filled with it already pasteurized.

I injected my first Ben’s bags with LC on 4/15 and I now have my first little baby pins. So it does seem to have been quicker.

Best resources I’ve found:

- subreddit r/unclebens. They go over this technique in great detail, lots of posts with questions and help

- YouTube user the rookie mycologist - getting to watch someone just at the start of their journey, approaching it like I did (trying a few different methods to see what would work best)

- YouTube 90 second mycology - more stuff on uncle Ben’s technique (90 seconds refers to the cook time for the rice - not the length of videos). The key thing I got from them is how to pasteurize substrate. A lot of people tell you to just put it in a big bucket and pour boiling water in it. But this can cause too low of temps and incomplete pasteurization. 90 second guy will show you how to do oven pasteurization

- YouTube Philly Golden Teacher - idk just the first one I watched, pretty helpful, will teach you “broke boi tek” which involves boiling rice yourself and sterilizing it in jars, rather than using ready rice

The only other things I needed to get:

Still air box - a box with arm holes for doing work with your bags and syringes and stuff to keep them protected from spores and stuff in the air . Can buy them for like $100 or make them for almost nothing, which my sister did for Xmas for me following this guide https://mycotown.com/still-air-box/

Supposedly for what I’ve been doing, you may not even need a SAB since everything is already sterile and sealed - but the number one rule of this is “you can’t be too sterile.”

Food dehydrator. They need to be dehydrated for storage. If they have any water left in them they will rot

Anyway, that’s about all I know! I find it uniquely rewarding and exciting. I hope to someday get into isolating genetics and using agar. If any of you ever want to try growing yourself, message me with any questions!
