they're deeper than they seem

• shinichi's most obvious, surface-level flaws are his stubbornness and, ironically, his own moral code (which can often lean into gray morality, but is no less relentless than if it were more black and white). they're both big driving forces behind his tendency to jump headfirst into danger, in spite of his analytical skills. combined with his formidable wit, he ends up a sharp character without a lot of wiggle room to volunteer compassion, but that amount is not zero.

• .........idk, how to say this.  shinichi suffers from shonen main character syndrome in that the show likes to flaunt his main character appeal and little else.  a lot of him is hidden beneath that and if you want it you have to WORK for it. for example - the show tends to play vulnerability for laughs-- not all the time, but a lot.  like what reason would shinichi have to be so pointed and overachieving in everything he does.  on the surface, the show tells you oh, well, he’s a bit cocky.  which... yes, but there’s probably ulterior motives to that, buried beneath layers and layers of bullshit that he himself probably doesn’t recognize: perhaps a staunch refusal to be caught in a position where he can be trampled (maybe after spending many childhood years watching ran go through it?), perhaps to claim some semblance of control over his life-- and by extension, to eke out of the shadow of his parents' legacy?  to predict every possible angle, every possible outcome, to protect any and every place he could possibly be wounded, so that someone like his father can't exploit it under the guise of some fucked test of character?

wasted potential / i like them enough to project my own issues onto them / nothing i like about them is technically canon

• i have my fair share of identity issues. a lot of them have to do with passion and purpose. cone/shinichi is nothing BUT an identity crisis and his need to suppress his real identity in all facets-- smarts, emotions, personality quirks-- only causes additional issues to surface as he continues to pretend being something/someone he isn't. does this even count if he's already canonically a Huge Mess??

• as is my usual spiel surrounding shinichi/conan he has all the ingredients for a fully-fleshed, canonical identity THING but it's never taken as seriously as one would reasonably expect (in the same way kogoro's alcoholism is often played for laughs). who wouldn't consider that massive, wasted potential. on a more macroscopic scale, the damage he causes vis-a-vis this implied identity crisis is also never coaxed out from under the rug and is either dismissed or swept back under it.

• in fact, this show is SO guilty of keeping things surface-level that tbh I think it relies on reading between the lines to keep its fandom space ablaze, at least to some degree. this show takes so much that would ordinarily be considered cause for concern and spins it into a joke or something far less consequential. shinichi's internal identity crisis is entirely implied afaik and i just take that and run with it (looking at you, desperate revival). incidentally this implied conflict is probably what i like most about him, with his dorkiness a close second.

wow! they are a horrible person

• do i really need to point out the real-life years of gaslighting and lying, not just to law enforcement/legal entities, but to the person he considers to be the most important to him. i mean i know he means well by it but it's sooo wrong and sooo damaging... like ran can keep a secret, can’t she??  does he fear that she’s too emotionally compromised or something??? (being emotional =/= weakness???? wow that’s an assessment a girl like ran doesn’t need to hear holy shit) 

• even worse, this boy tends to be witness #1 to the direct fallout (not just from ran but from everyone), he's GOTTA be more than aware of the consequences of what he's doing (and...tbf i think he is, at least when the show wants to milk that for something)

• in that regard, he may be horrible, but not irredeemable; he's nearly given up at least twice because the emotional burden was too much, but my brother in christ....... you started the lie:

'i can't do this anymore.'

why do they look like that / they are sooooo cool looking

• dork-ass bow-tie wearing BITCH (affectionate)

• i say this like babby hex didn't have a HUGE crush on shinichi during her first detco phase, and as if this pre-existing bias/his appearance has no bearing on why he's still my favorite *sweats*

• just to incriminate myself even more i literally just watched ep.400 and reeled at seeing shinichi again for longer than a few seconds, even if it was just in flashback.  i watched almost all the shinichi episodes first and haven’t rewatched most of them since so my lizard brain is probably thirsting over here and i don’t even realize it until he appears onscreen again

i'm mentally ill about them

• have you seen my body of detco art/writing and who stars in 90% of it

they work better as part of a dynamic

• for the most part i feel that shinichi is enhanced when he interacts with someone else.  as the protagonist he can already carry himself but i always seem to enjoy him exponentially more when he gets to butt heads, be challenged, or cooperate with someone else as one half of a duo (and specifically a duo, bc with larger groups the focus dissipates. like with the detective boys he tends to vibe more as group dad/big brother/a chaperone):

○ haibara: someone who relates to his existential dilemma. she's a moral challenge for him as someone whom he would've--and almost did--without a doubt condemn to super hell at first sight.  how would pre-moonlight sonata shin have reacted to her?  her history is behind her, but can he forgive that, even if she knows she's completely renounced the old ways?  her time at the BO/her status as creator of APTX is a stain that can't be washed off the record just as a matter of fact, it's up to her found family to scrub it on a social level and sometimes i wonder if shinichi is up to it, even after the slight revisions to his moral code.  the BO in general has a strange way of bringing out some rarely-seen behavior in him, so i do wonder... when it comes down to it... yeah this isn’t how murderer!shinichi was birthed at all

○ heiji: someone who shares his passion for detective work and treats him as an equal.  i could argue this is because he sees right past the veil of conan, but... i don’t really think that’s entirely true.  he seemed to respect conan even before the truth was confirmed.  imo heiji’s a challenge of companionship for him, being one of the few he can be freely open with-- and thus vulnerable-- at all times.  when he’s alone, or around most others, shinichi is forced to wall himself off to avoid signaling the likenesses to himself, so i think being close with someone he can trust with the full truth is like opening a faucet and trying to temper the flow when you’re not sure if too much or too little has come out.  is that even a coherent metaphor t.t 

○ kaito: someone who challenges his wit enough to make him a tantilizing/worthy opponent.  heiji was this once, until he assumed the companion role.  kaito is also something of a challenge to his worldview, there’s probably some overlap there with haibara regarding his moral code (are there any other criminals he’d willingly cooperate with, or even be so sure of their principles that he’d -mostly- trust them around people in general? i mean it’s not like shinichi really has a choice when he he gets to a point when he has to partner up with kaito but... you know what i mean, he’d probably give up his life before partnering up with other criminals).  what he provides shinichi that haibara can’t though is a test of passion, and... maybe by extension, self-restraint, in relation to that passion and defiance of private morality.

well, i am not immune from conan/shinichi fever nor do i claim to be even in the slightest.  the show is named after him for a reason and clearly he must have some power over me if i fell in love with his character twice, with 15ish years between each instance.  even so, i think he’s weirdly underutilized-- or at least i think his full potential is underutilized.  for a protag of a show running for 25 years there’s a surprising lack of exploration of anything beyond surface-level, whether that’s his character on its own merits or in relation with someone else.

it’s a shame, but luckily the character is popular enough that discussion is not difficult to find among fandom spaces, mine included.

Me, at least once a week: It’s really surprising that kuzuhina isn’t a very popular ship in this fandom. They have so many of the hallmarks of popular mlm pairings and people really like Fuyuhiko. I know komahina reigns supreme but I still see a lot of other shipping stuff with Hajime, so what keeps Fuyuhiko out of the running?

Me in surprise, every single time, experiencing the exact same flash of inspiration as thought it is a brand new revelation: They see Peko as a love interest not his sister!

This is just an essay (?!) about Naeishi and why I like them. I just want to dump my thoughts about them somewhere because I love them a lot.

... a very, VERY long essay, featuring lots of screenshots. I don’t expect anyone to read this but if you do, enjoy?!

1. They’re cute

Very important reason and self-explanatory. They’re cute. 

2. Ishimaru relates to Naegi

Everyone already knows Ishimaru has trouble relating to others and making friends. But Naegi is actually the person Ishimaru considers to be the most similar to him (even though Naegi disagrees).

Ehe.

And also, just before the second picture Naegi says this:

But in the end of DR3, what did Naegi do? Even though he’s just a ‘normal’ guy, Naegi managed to rehabilitate the remnants of despair and decided to rebuild the school. He even ended up in a leader position like Ishimaru once did. They are more similar than Naegi thinks.

3. Professor Naegi!!!

After Naegi teaches Ishimaru about the wonders of having a hobby (that isn’t studying), Ishimaru happily praises him as Professor Naegi. Which Naegi is embarrassed about for obvious reasons. But anyway, Ishimaru started to look up to Naegi on their first FTE and wants to learn more from him.

‘I didn’t totally hate it.’

Ehehe. The idea of Naegi teaching Ishimaru about his favourite games and shows while Ishimaru intensely studies them and makes notes is really cute.

But I really like their relationship because it feels like they both can learn a lot from each other. Obviously, Naegi can help Ishimaru make friends and help him loosen up a bit and relax, but Ishimaru, besides helping him study, since they actually have similar ‘goals’ (although Naegi doesn’t believe he’s capable of it), Ishimaru would motivate and encourage Naegi not to give up and to be more confident.

4. Ishimaru secretly likes Naegi’s fashion sense

In their second FTE, Ishimaru confesses to Naegi...!

That he likes his totally cool hoodie!! Ishimaru, who only wears his school uniform 24/7 and has ten sets of them because he’s poor thinks Naegi’s hoodie is awesome. 

(But does Naegi have any right to criticise him when he sleeps in his full uniform as well?! WITH SHOES?! I’m so disappointed in you Naegi...! At least Ishimaru takes off his uniform when he sleeps! Not to mention Naegi has another hoodie with the exact same design but with short sleeves... Maybe they can bond over their clothes collection, except they're all the same type of clothes...?)

But it gets even better, as Ishimaru comes up with a reason (excuse) to get Naegi to hand over his ‘incredibly stylish hoodie’. 

...He totally wants to wear it.

Naegi manages to give an equally ridiculous reason (excuse) to convince Ishimaru not to confiscate his hoodie, by calling it a hard hat. If only Naegi did give Ishimaru his hoodie, then maybe it could protect his head from getting bonked.  

Naegi really loves his hoodie and defends himself. But Ishimaru still insists that he hand it over eventually. Totally because he’s breaking some non-existent dress code and NOT because he thinks it’s stylish! 

5. Friendship (FTEs and School Mode ending)

On their first meeting, Ishimaru thinks Naegi has a nice name (Makoto can be read as truth), and Naegi thinks he’s annoying... but if you do his FTEs Naegi does grow to understand him and change his mind. After all, Ishimaru isn’t a bad person, while he can be harsh and strict he is not purposefully trying to push people away and Naegi understands that. 

I think it’s also easy for Naegi to relate to Ishimaru as well. Since he’s just a ‘normal’ student, and while Ishimaru is a very extreme example of an honour student, his life basically revolves around studying which isn’t exactly foreign to Naegi. And Naegi can see exactly what Ishimaru is missing - hobbies and a friend. 

Naegi softens his impression of Ishimaru once he realises he has trouble connecting with others. While he does not have the best grades, not a prefect, or in many clubs, Naegi has one thing that Ishimaru doesn’t and deep down secretly wants, and that is the ability to communicate with others and make friends. 

And while Ishimaru is a disaster in social situations, he is completely aware that his personality/words/actions push people away.

He also apologises to Naegi whenever he ‘gets carried away’.

And Naegi, being the positive encouraging friend he is, cheers Ishimaru up with his words. 

In the final FTE, Ishimaru invites Naegi to study with him, instead of forcefully dragging him to study together:

Rather than being all ‘eh I don’t really want to study’ like he would be at the start, Naegi asks if he doesn’t mind if he stops by... To Ishimaru, studying together is the equivalent of playing a game or watching a show together - it’s his hobby and he wants to share it with Naegi. 

Ehe. He’s very happy.

Naegi interrupts their study session because he wants to know more about Ishimaru’s hatred for geniuses. He’s genuinely concerned and curious about him...! Ishimaru tells him about his grandfather, and how he messed up his family’s life. After that, Ishimaru says he’s really happy to have met Naegi, because he thought he would be surrounded by geniuses in this school for ‘Ultimates’. They continue studying and Naegi believes they’ve become true friends.

...But that’s not all! In the Trigger Happy Heart event at the end of School Mode, Ishimaru thinks to himself:

He’s aware that people find him annoying, but he still wants someone he can talk to. And once again, Ishimaru thinks Naegi is just like him.

If Naegi picks the best option:

Naegi tells him it’s fine to just be himself and talk about whatever he wants. He doesn’t feel like he’s forcing anything on him. 

But Ishimaru is still worried that Naegi sees him as a nuisance. Ishimaru wants to be friends with Naegi, but he feels bad for talking so much and wonders if Naegi even likes listening to him... and Naegi reassures him that he considers them to be friends. Ishimaru still asks for permission because he’s unsure (and has never had a friend before besides him and Oowada in the main story, but in School Mode the sauna battle didn’t happen), and of course Naegi is happy to become a friend Ishimaru can talk to anytime.

Naegi doesn’t pressure Ishimaru into changing his personality to become comfortable with him, he likes him the way he is.

If Naegi picks the second best option:

Naegi reassures him that his feelings are valid. It’s basically similar to the best option but shorter. (And if you want to be a monster and tell Ishimaru he’s annoying and watch his heart break, you can pick the bad options but we all know Naegi is too nice for that.)

Finally there’s the School Mode ending:

Foreshadowing. :p

Ishimaru manages to compose himself after remembering what Naegi (and living trapped in the school) taught him. Also Ishimaru’s face gets really nervous when Naegi mentions ‘I have to believe this isn’t the last time we’ll see each other’... 

Naegi is possibly Ishimaru’s only friend in School Mode, so it makes sense that Ishimaru might be worried that Naegi would leave him and he would be alone again.

Naegi remembers his promise with Ishimaru:

He even does his signature pointing pose when he says it! And Ishimaru wants Naegi’s help to achieve his goal. Naegi is shocked because as he thought before, he doesn’t believe he can do something so grand like changing the world to one that rewards effort rather than talent.

Ishimaru reveals that he wants Naegi to become his partner. He trusts him so much and wants to work with him to change the country. (Meanwhile in DR3, Naegi’s trying to do something similar on a smaller scale...) 

‘I saw then that no matter what darkness might stand before him, he would shine through it.’ If only that were the case in the main game... 

6. In the killing game

They are both ‘good’ people who don’t want any killings to happen. Because of his personality, Ishimaru takes the lead and tries to come up with ways to stop any murders from happening (like the morning meetings to keep track of everyone, and saying naive things like ‘if you’re the killer please raise your hand’). Naegi is more passive and doesn’t take any sore of leadership role until maybe the last chapter, but they both are the type who can’t imagine their ‘friends’ killing each other. 

Oh, and Ishimaru does the forget forget beam to Naegi in a small conversation in chapter 1. Cute.

Sadly, after chapter 2 Ishimaru gets broken and Naegi tries to talk to him... somewhat. Ishimaru doesn’t respond to anyone and Naegi gets distracted by Alter Ego. Ishimaru does go to Naegi directly and asks him to let him meet Alter Ego (who he deludes himself into thinking is Fujisaki). It’s probably because Ishimaru does feel the most comfortable with Naegi compared to everyone else (since his bro is...). Naegi brings Ishimaru to Alter Ego despite Kirigiri’s warning (if you talk to her, she says that he might be dangerous but Naegi does it anyway). Also if you click on Maizono’s door, Naegi thinks to himself that Ishimaru must have felt the same way when he lost his bro, so he sympathises with him.

Unfortunately, Naegi (and everyone else) kind of forgets about Ishimaru when he becomes Ishida and runs away. If you try to talk to Ishida during Free Time, he just tells Naegi to go away because they didn’t bother to write any FTEs for him. Grumble grumble. Naegi is sadly too passive and doesn’t bother going after Ishimaru/da any further (he usually waits for people to come to him before helping). Ishimaru dies a lonely, quiet death justlikehisgrandfather and everyone worries about Yamada instead. And that’s the end of Ishimaru.

Some random depressing Ishimaru thoughts that don’t have anything to do with Naegi but I wanted to include them anyway: 

• In the very first trial, the two people on either side of him died so Ishimaru is already isolated from everyone else in the first (!!!!) trial. (Naegi is one spot besides Maizono too.)

• Ishimaru and Sakura are the only dead characters who don’t show up in the small group photos Naegi finds in chapter 3-4. Sakura makes sense since she died in chapter 4 and the next photos are just the big group ones, but Ishimaru... It would be nice if they appeared in a photo together in chapter 5.

7. Angst potential

Did someone say ‘angst’? Naeishi has a lot of angsty elements. Of course, they’re in a killing game and Ishimaru dies. But Naeishi can have:

• Memory loss. It’s very likely that Naegi and Ishimaru could have been pretty good friends in their first year together, or at least close enough that Naegi didn’t feel annoyed by him anymore (like through his FTEs):

That last sentence has a nice translation. So when they forget everything and get thrown into a killing game, it’s pretty sad to think about them forgetting everything about each other and becoming distant. And it’s even more painful if Naegi got his memories back afterwards and realises he did nothing to save him... 

• Unrequited feelings. Yeah. This can work both ways. Naegi or Ishimaru feeling like they’re not good enough for the other...

• Guilt. Goes with the first one, but if Naegi had kept an eye on Ishimaru even when he became Ishida (and when he needed someone to help him more than ever...), maybe he could have saved him? Or at least let him know that SOMEONE else does also care about him, just like his bro. Anyway Naegi feeling guilty is tasty.

• Happiness doesn’t last. For some reason there are a few comics where Naegi and Ishimaru hang out and do some happy thing (like Naegi showing Ishimaru how to play a game), and promising to show him more, or something like Ishimaru promises he will beat the game before they graduate. And then it ends with Ishimaru falling into depression and eventually dying while Naegi is helpless... Their promises never got fulfilled.

8. Wholesome?!

Anyway, because I don’t want to end it on a depressing (?) note, Naeishi is just... very soft. Ishimaru really wants to become Naegi’s friend, and he’s awkward about it, but you can tell he really enjoys Naegi’s company. When he talks in his FTEs, Ishimaru is really excited because he’s never really had this kind of conversation with another person before (just talking with someone normally is new to him). While he can be judgemental and set in his opinions, it’s possible to change his mind as long as you give a reason that he can accept (like games helping you make friends and the hard hat hoodie). And Ishimaru does get bothered/guilty when he realises he might be forcing his opinion on Naegi, and apologises, because deep down he’s worried of what Naegi thinks about him. He doesn’t want Naegi to dislike him.

Naegi knows there’s a lot more to life than just studying and school, and he feels bad for Ishimaru. So he tries to help him, and share his own opinions, and Ishimaru realises that he has a point and wishes to continue learning new things from him. At the same time, Naegi admires Ishimaru and thinks he’s a very strong-willed and dedicated person. While initially he finds Ishimaru comes off kind of strongly, he slowly understands why he is the way he is and ends up enjoying spending time with him, even through studying. 

In conclusion, Naeishi are very good. I like how their relationship progresses gradually and naturally, I like how their personalities complement each other, I like how painful they are... I like how they are (relatively) normal, or how they have some things in common (school) and can relate to each other, and how they admire aspects of each other. I love them a just a bit. So I saw a weirdass dream—

1. First I saw that I was in some facility or sth and had discovered something important but then I was back in my home, getting ready to go outside for some play and by ICSE

2. But lo and behold, I wound up sneezing and my family thought that I had Corona and said that I would have to stay back since health before exams, ofc <3. But I threw a fit because I wanted to go and meet Chiaki and give exams at school but they still wouldn't listen so I mistakenly dropped porridge on Kaito out of pure spite.

3. Either way, his clothes got ruined and he had to stay back too.

4. For whatever reason, we actually got along pretty well (okay realistically I *would* get along with him, which is...pretty hilarious) and everything and then I asked my mom to buy me some MHA X BSD X Tintin light novel which covers some portion from the comics (though that was a lie I told her...I think. Kaito helped me to persuade her™) and she agreed and then I went to take a bath or sth.

5. Wherein the setting changed slightly to SDR2 and I became a mix of Romila and Nagito because ofc <3 (technically Nagito but yeah, he was looking like Romila for some reason) Either way, I turned on all the taps in my bathroom and apparently I somehow had to figure out the traitor ™ with that. Either way, my triggers had amplified apparently and I ran out of the bathroom as soon as I saw the showerhead (apparently due to dream logic, it was because of the ICSEs) but I had figured out the traitor. (Yk. Nagito's SHSL Luck. Still no clue about the gender but eh)

6. Now, the POV went to the actual traitor who was the slightly evil mixture of Chiaki Nanami, Junko Enoshima and myself and they thought that I (as in Nagito) had got the wrong person wherein the POV shifted to Nagito again who went, "....and that's what the traitor would think" while splashing water onto her face (because Nagito was presenting as female here for some reason) because they felt weak.

7. Either way, then I (as in myself) went to see stuff about the comics and found a Tintin comic wherein Captain Haddock gets hit by a cloning beam and splits to multiple clones who are Captain Haddocks but from various ethnicities. There was also one with dreadlocks for some reason.

8. I commented that it was an extremely weird thing and felt it was slightly disrespectful but then I was somehow at some warehouse with this woman who was showing us some "vintage" clips and asking us whether we had ever seen those before because they were very old.

9. Kaito (who was still there......yk what, he's the most peaceful person to go about making me like them in my dreams) then proceeded to stare at me (dude I might have dark hair but I am NOT Shuichi) expecting something while I remembered that I had seen one in my grandparents' ancestral home (no one else had ever seen the clip before) and I said that and the lady was trying to interrogate me about it and I was trying to remember when I woke up.

10. There was also a part where I tagged you in some meme-y post about dreams and you went on a rant about how it's high-key disrespectful or whatever and that it's just making people distressed or sth.

11. There was a part about me texting a friend (who HATES horror irl) about a really scary tragedy and she was excitedly listening to it......and we were chatting on the dark web Instagram for whatever reason. I think I was telling her about Mieruko-chan (yk the horror anime I was watching), so that's for one.....

12. .... it's extremely hilarious how Kaito was behaving like a more enthusiastic version of my male cousin on my mom's side in this dream......................not that it was OOC, no, both of us were just surprised by how much we actually had in common and chatted about astronomy. But he also decidedly kept a watch on me so that I actually ate something. And there was also an implication that if I went to school (well that would explain the tap Russian Roulette with Nagito but eh), my luck would have been horrid and if I stayed home alone, it wouldn't have been better either, so thanks Mr. Horrible Fashion sense, ig? I mean, he also did stand there are emotional support when I asked my mom for the comics......everyone was surprised because they had expected us to strangle each other within three seconds.....peak irony

13. Dazai and Mikan: You don't like us, bitch? We will make you suffer :)

Kaito: Oh, you don't like me? Eh, okay, I will try to keep company when I can in peaceful parts <3

- so while you weren’t in the same area, you still got together occassionally to talk

- he seemed sweet, and to be honest, you were kinda growing a little crush on him

- and then summer break happened

- he disappeared into a summer camp for the entire summer, you barely got to text him

- so when school came back, naturally you kinda drifted towards him

- he didn’t really have any friends, just a few people he talked casually too

- maybe it was because he was always oddly dressed, and stood out like an outlier

- but you didn’t mind if he got stares, so you followed him around like a lost puppy

- he started to talk about a girl he met in summer camp, one supposedly from america named sara

- and to be honest at first you were... jealous

- you wanted him to talk about you like that

- on sara’s end, she was completely conflicted

- joe was her best friend, and even though he had broke things off with ryoko, it still felt wrong to chase after him

- meanwhile, the boy from summer camp was so... cute

- but he talked about a student from his school a lot.. and she didn’t have any of his contact information

- it seemed unlikely that ya’ll would all meet, until joe dragged her along to a sports game

- joe was pretty good at learning things around the school, so with a little asking around, he found out that the kid from summer camp that sara keeps talking about was in band

- and of course he just had to meet him !!

- sara had no idea that your band was going to play until half time when she saw him 

- she jumped up, smacking joe a couple of times

- and joe had to admit... this boy was kinda cute

- and so was that other student slightly to the left of him

- you gave off a different vibe, just like ranmaru, from the rest of your band

- even though you were all wearing the same outfit

- once your performance was over, sara rushed over to meet ranmaru

- and joe went to meet you, actually

- but you were right by ranmaru, talking to him while cleaning your instrument

- you noticed the two walking up to you before ranmaru did and kinda pouted for a second

- you realized this was the girl

- why did she have to be so attractive ?

- your cheeks flared up, and decided to stare at the boy walking with her too

- he was.... also attractive, in his own way

- he kinda reminded you of ranmaru in a way.

- that only made your feelings worse, to be real

- ranmaru noticed them, and waved excitedly at sara

- the three of you talked for the entire break, before exchanging informations at the end of the day

- sara, the sensible and calm one. she was rational and thought everything through.

- joe, the comedic relief. he brought laughter to any conversation and enjoyed watching everyone smile

- and ranmaru, the nervous one. he was weak-willed and swayed easily, but had this determination about him to never give up

- these three became your best friends, and you were theirs

- so why ?

- why did you feel this weird emotion welling in your chest every night when you thought about them

- especially if it was a sleep over, and you were snuggled up to the three of them with sara in your arms, joe holding her, and ranmaru against your hip

- you three did everything together

- even if you came from different schools

- breaks at school were spent facetiming joe and sara and talking

- afternoons were spent walking each other home, and saying good bye before going to your own home

- and nights were spent studying on call with them, talking about upcoming tests and worrying about your garades

You shiver a bit, heart racing, eyes still glancing at the door. 

It reminds you of the time a few months ago when you first invited him over to your house.

You were sitting there waiting for what seemed like hours after his due. The thoughts of him ditching you began to weigh in only a few seconds before he started knocking on the door.

But now, there is no knocking, only the clicking of you tapping the keyboard on your phone. The message is a bit lengthy. 

No, that’s embarrassing. How dare he knows that you care.

You delete the message. 

The analytical side of you wants to find a reasonable explanation. But you are not a fortune teller. 

You have a few estimated guesses, though. I mean, for a typical person, you would assume something about school workload. But Hinata never seems too bothered by the assignments the reserve course offers. Has he joined clubs? Trying to get his social life up? 

You did suggest it.

He would have told you, though. 

Wouldn’t he have?

And if he’s in trouble? What if he got held up?

But alas, the clicking of the doorknob sends a wave of frustration through your body. Because, if he did anything, the issue is him not telling you.

“Hinata!” You call out, trying to use thought before jumping to conclusions. His head peeps out from behind the door before the rest of him. And he sheepishly steps inside the house, closing the door, isolating himself with you.

“See, I thought you’d be waiting for me.” 

“So you knew I would be mad with you. Why didn’t you text me?” The heat ran up your spine and to your cheeks. Don’t get mad, don’t get mad, don’t get mad, don’t get mad.

Hinata sets down his school bag.

He must have went somewhere right after school. Still, he’s not giving you any answers.

“(Y/N), I was just listening to your advice. Me and my friends went to the arcade together. Here,” his fingers pull a card from his pocket, “I even put some tokens on this one for you. I didn’t want to pick out prizes without you.”

He thought of you. That makes up for it, a little bit. He knew you’d be mad at him. 

The predictability doesn’t stop you from clenching your phone a little tighter.

You do get mad over simple things sometimes. But this isn’t exactly simple.

“Hajime. You could have been hurt and I wouldn’t have known. You still haven’t told me why you didn’t contact me.”

His hands, calm and collected, pull the phone away from you with an ease he had once lacked in the beginning of the relationship. 

With a slow second passing - the second being him trying to navigate your phone while you watch with a glare - the low hum of his phone ringing from upstairs filling the silence. 

He forgot his phone. Stupid school boy with his crowded mind.

“You were hanging out with your friends?” You say, voice soft and lacking the accusation. It’s good news. 

With a small smile on his face, he nods his head, offering the card to you once again. “You should come with us next time.”

You hold onto it, snatching your phone back, too. “Just don’t make me worry next time, okay?”

It started off with a single notification: a missed call from Megumi Ugumori. Their band’s bassist. The ping started Kagemori initially, as they hadn’t heard their phone go off in months,

Then another notification: a missed call from Kagemori’s mother.

As those who were alive left Hope’s Peak’s Most Excellent returned to civilization (and therefore, cell reception), Kagemori’s phone pinged with the soon uncountable number of missed call and text notifications. Worried messages from his bandmates, less personal tweets from fans on social media, business emails from booked venues booked inquiring if Deadman’s Party would be canceling their tour performances.

Most were ignored for now, that was a shitshow they could deal with later. Leaning a bit more against E.ve’s shoulder with a weary sigh, Kagemori returns their most recently missed video call. A white haired girl picks up the phone almost immediately, suspicious until she studies Kagemori’s face for a few tense, quiet seconds. Her sudden sobs likely disturbed everyone within earshot.

“You look like shit, hun!!”

“…thanks, Megumi…”

When the visual kei artist made the trip back to Tokyo, his bandmates were there to meet him. Blue, white, and brown hair joined Kagemori’s own purple in a group hug that threatened to topple them over. One misstep and suddenly Kagemori’s stumbling over Gou’s platform sneakers, Katsa’s laughing warmly and Megumi’s voluminous skirts cushion their descent to the concrete. Deadman’s Party is reunited and crying together on the pavement. No one’s mascara made it out untouched, but tears were dried in order to introduce the person somehow still holding Kagemori’s hand. It was, of course, E.ve. Who may have been fidgeting silently throughout the whole reunion. 

Breathless and smiling, Kagemori inhales to give E.ve some sort of introduction - Katsa and Megumi were looking at their joined hands expectantly - but first, the drummer (tiny terror that Gou is) blurts out something abruptly: 

“Arent’cha that one streamer guy?”

Considering everything that happened, Kagemori was initially hesitant to leave E.ve’s side for very long - what if this was a dream? What if they woke up back in Mirai.co’s clutches - one or both of them dead? It was obvious both of them needed some time to heal from the horrors of the mutual killing game, both in the physical and mental sense. So, after a quick post on social media explaining that they were fine and that Deadman’s Party would be postponing their tour for about a year, Kagemori went quiet on the public front for a bit. The prying questions were just… something Kagemori couldn’t face immediately. After a trip to get snacks and, perhaps, medical attention… rom-coms, cheesy vampire movies, and as many blankets as Kagemori could carry were then brought to E.ve’s apartment. The two of them holed up there for a bit, trying to feel ok again after… everything. Twilight and cuddles helped.

After some time, he would take E.ve (who would later just go by Eve) on an actual first date. Then a second, then a third. The two bros could be spotted raising hell on Dance Dance Revolution mats across Tokyo, splitting high scores across every arcade while shooting each other absolutely sappy glances. Saying that he made Kagemori’s heart sing wasn’t an overstatement. They helped keep each other stable in the time after the killing game… and Kagemori helped Eve through his confession to his fans and in finding out who he was outside of speedrunning games. 

Kagemori would visit their mother when they were ready. They chose not to mention the threat on her life that the first motive presented, as they still… had no idea how to sort through why she was targeted instead of their bandmates. To avoid their step-father, most of Kagemori’s time at home was spent with his younger half-brother. Their one-sided sibling rivalry seemed stupid now, so maybe Kagemori could start letting go of their jealousy.

It was for the best that their mother no longer represent them, at least as their band’s manager. That was one decision they’d thought about in the long weeks of captivity.

They had made some mistakes in the first 19 years of their life, but the effects of the fifth motive (reliving a night they’d rather forget) made them realize saving their fellow ex-gang member was not one of them. Staying out of touch with them WOULD be a mistake, so they’d take the first possible opportunity to visit a small farm in Osaka. Maybe Oleander would still want to see them, even after Kagemori had distanced themself from everyone to save their reputation.

They kept their word. Kagemori helped out with the reserve course protests as much as their body would allow, yelling themself hoarse while standing, hip cocked, in the front of picket lines. They were never one to be shy about fighting for the causes they believed in, so when Hope’s Peak’s president to hear out their demands… well, they felt a bit of smug satisfaction. But the voice in their head undermined the protest’s success with whispers of, “how many reserve course students lead to the killing game?” Perhaps it was a good thing they graduated that year. 

At some point during Kagemori’s time recovering from the killing game, they went on a short trip to Gwangju. They wished it was under better circumstances, but Mickey had promised to show them around. The promise felt more bittersweet now. Kkwaegori-kun the stuffed duck made the trip as well, but Kagemori decided to ultimately keep him.

They drew the line at wearing clear jeans in her honor because they were, in Kagemori’s mind, a crime against fashion. So were speedos, but… Still, Kagemori would make sure everyone remembered Kyung Min “Mickey” Oh and her work.

More than a year after the escape from Hope’s Peak’s Most Excellent: a promotional video posted to the Deadman’s Party social media page. Beginning immediately, all across Japan: The Phoenix Tour. Aptly named, as many critics speculated that the “kidnapping” crisis would end the band’s career. The highs and lows of the past two years were the perfect musical drive, so the band hit the road. With… one roadie even their bassist had grown accustomed to: Eve had shotgun now. Not that anyone minded too much, four was the perfect number to play Mario Party while Kagemori drove.

The tour went better than anyone could have expected, especially after the tragedy at HPME. Kagemori truly came alive onstage, aloof persona slipping away as they hit high notes and death drops. They were the now former SHSL Visual Kei Artist for a reason, as anyone with a ticket could see. Given the success of Deadman’s Party’s tour, the band had a bright future ahead of them.

Over time, Kagemori would be more comfortable being public about their relationship with their boyfriend. It wasn’t Eve - not at all. Kagemori’s first relationship was based on a secret, having it exposed almost ended their career. Their second: a publicity stunt, a lie that became too comfortable. The visual kei artist was hesitant sharing details at first, not wanting anyone else sticking their nose in their relationship. But… as apprehension wore off, so did Kagemori’s aversion to public displays of affection. They were happy and everyone should know, damnit! Only idols had to worry about their fans getting upset by that stuff, so Kagemori considered his bandmates  yelling “GET A ROOM!” at him to be character development.

The two were kicked out of many couples cooking classes in their attempts to learn how to make something that wasn’t cup ramen. Eventually, Kagemori got the hang of it. Kind of.

…but what of their relationships with their classmates?

Kagemori still reached out to Hinata sometimes, texting her his increasingly less clumsy attempts at sewing stuffed animals. The visual kei artist hoped she could be a better friend to Red than he could, at the very least. They’d ask for updates, hoping he was doing better but not pushing it further.

Reiko Eigawa… was someone Kagemori genuinely wanted the best for, as she was one of the many victims of Mirai.co’s schemes but one of the few they got to know better than others. They, at some point in transit back to civilization, asked about the ring that rightfully belonged to her. She had someone waiting for her on the outside, after all. Someone that would have appreciated her no matter how she came home, whether that was flesh and blood, a giant robotic mantis, or somewhere in-between. 

Of course, they kept in touch. Kagemori was happy for Reiko when, some time in the future, a ring remained on her finger. They weren’t often one for romance usually (says one half of the only endgame class ship), but the visual kei artist would insist on meeting the blonde journalist that she went on about. They had bad experiences with such people, but perhaps the love of his Reiko’s life would be an exception.

And there was the matter of Ubatsi - no, Kunie Sasamoto. The measurements had to be altered significantly, as Kunie now had lost two arms and gained a bit in height after being de-robofied, but Kagemori finally made them the leather jacket that they’d sketched before Riko’s death. Sometimes, the two of them would get together to sew and catch up (because Kagemori’s delinquent days were now, pointedly, behind them). Ultimately, Kagemori was happy that they’d get a second shot at life with their sister… and they’d hope to whatever god was out there that Kunie wouldn’t do anything shady and reckless. The shadows they’d seen during the final motive motivated them to keep a watchful eye.

Kunie and Riko had tickets to their tour whenever they wanted, wherever they wanted. That courtesy was extended to any of HMPE’s victims that they were, at least, on friendly terms with. Unfortunately, some bridges were burned in the killing game’s final moments.

They would never truly like Preston, not at this point. An understanding was reached between them before the mastermind trial, but it turned stale in the aftermath. However, Preston was important to Eve. Kagemori would respect that and, at the very least, be courteous to the one who helped Atsuko’s scheming. Maybe forgiveness could come some day, but it wouldn’t come nearly as quickly as Eve’s had. Especially not if Preston was still half-pining over Eve, Kagemori did have eyes after all. 

Their friendship with Atsuko Fujimoto, at least the one they thought they knew until the mastermind trial, was left behind at HPME: a dress design hastily torn out of a notebook and left in a trash can. Her influence on Kagemori lingered in the songs they would write in the months after the killing game… not that they would ever give her the satisfaction of knowing that.

Ultimately, Kagemori wasn’t the same person they were before Hope’s Peak’s Most Excellent. Kagemori Kanta was now far from an island, as they actually had a few friends (and in one case, much more than a friend) that were outside their band.

…and perhaps, despite the pain and losses they endured, they now had more reasons to sing than before.
