Diversity Win: Is "Crazy Rich" POC Representation Necessarily Empowering?

I’m writing a story with two sets of protagonists: A trio with a Black girl, a Latino, and a Vietnamese-American boy who all come from middle-upper class to ridiculously rich families, and a pair of white working-middle class sisters. They’re all heroes of this story. I’ve seen way too many rich white people and poor poc people in fiction, and I’m kinda getting sick of it, but I’m worried that by having the poc kids be rich and the white girls not so much, I’ll be reinforcing the idea that poc somehow rule the world. OP, have you ever seen the “diversity win!” meme before?

I understand that your motivation for these narrative choices is to give POC a chance, if you will, to be the rich characters. But it is evident from this ask that you have not asked yourself what this entails. I want to ask you to critically examine the race and class intersections you’re creating here, as well as these kids’ roles in oppressive systems.

You explain that these rich POC are heroes and only have righteous reasons for leveraging their power.

But is your Black girl character aware of the potential disciplinary and/or legal consequences her jock accomplice might face while she has the resources to keep her hands clean? Are you?

Is your Asian character aware of how much of an abuse of power it is to “sic” a cop on someone, and the sheer amount of harm a criminal record or incarceration does to a juvenile with behavior issues? Are you?

So you want to put POC in positions of power for #representation.

Does it resonate with the group you’re representing?

Do you research and portray the unique ways race, ethnicity, class, and majority vs. minority status come together?

Or are you putting these characters in oppressive hegemonic roles for the sake of a power fantasy, on behalf of a group you're not even in?

To your question, you're not reinforcing the idea that "POC rule the world" because such a generalized belief does not exist. Instead, you're reinforcing:

The idea that society has “winners” and “losers.”

The idea that the problem with disproportionately powerful people is the lack of “equal opportunity” as opposed to the power imbalance to begin with.

The idea that those in oppressive positions of power need only have the right intentions to justify their use of it.

To be clear: that is not to say that you can't have jerk aristocrat billionaire millionaire crazy rich POC. Evil or mean rich characters are fun! I have some myself! You can even have rich characters who are gentle-hearted and well-intentioned, but you have to know the ways in which they’re privileged and decide how aware of that your characters are. That’s no problem.

But if you think that wealthy and powerful POC would have the same values and priorities as their poorer counterparts, you’re deluding yourself. There’s a reason why the quote “power corrupts” exists. There’s a reason why no matter where you look on the globe, there are historical dictators and tyrants.

If you want bratty rich POC who lack regard for the consequences of their actions, because you want bratty rich characters, great! If you want them because it would be uplifting or empowering representation? You’re doing it for the wrong reason.

I don't think you need to aim to subvert or purposely make all the BIPOC rich and powerful and the white people poor and suffering. Add diversity and include upper class rich and class privileged BIPOC, sure thing! And you can avoid your fears of intentional subversion message by including rich and powerful white characters as well, even if they're not the focus of your story. Just their existence helps. You could also include middle-class characters of Color as well.

A long time ago, years before I started posting, a German artist by the name of GagSnob did a piece showing a series of heads with a step-by-step multi-layered gag. AFAIK that was the first and only instance of anything like that before I showed up. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) I'm not even sure when it was originally from—I'm guessing early 00's, maybe even earlier. I wish I could find it now.

I didn't see it until some time later, but that was what started it for me. I was like "Wow, this is hot! I want to try!" Then over time, some other artists and I gradually took it further and further and it just kind of became a thing.

Sometimes I wonder who first came up with the idea of layering gags. This is the earliest reference to the concept that I'm aware of. 1994!

...a character bound, gagged, and bent over a table, getting gangbanged by a group of big mean girls (with dicks!) like the ones from this.

One girl would be ramming her from behind, bent over her, with one hand against the back of her head and the other clamped over her gagged mouth. The rest of them would be standing around the table and stroking themselves, maybe making some lewd, dominating comments in speech bubbles.

I tried drawing it once, but it was a mess. It's pretty hard to get it the way I'm picturing it. Even if I could pull it off, I don't know if my audience would go for something that raunchy, and I'm pretty sure it would violate the rules of most platforms I post on anyway. Maybe someday though!

I cannot fully convey the wonder and majesty of the DnD session last night. But my betrothed DMed a one shot for us, and our regular DM played a character called Red Star. It was a kidnapping mystery where my betrotheds character got stolen away and we had to find her. As we ruled out suspects I was looking harder and harder at Red Star as Suspect Number One but due to a roll where we both nat 20’d nothing could be solidified. Also wtf I’ve never had contested nat 20’s in a roll off

So Red Star convinces the party to go shake up this local gang who he insists is involved. The gang is utterly unprepared and we start tearing through them. But Red Star takes a hit and his appearance wavers and after a really tense internal debate I was like. “I stab Red Star”

His player looked so incredulous, “You stab Red Star?!” For a second he was so genuinely dismayed that I actually questioned the fact that I’d just stabbed a party member.

But it turned out Red Star was a stalker my character had cut ties with a year ago for getting romantic inclinations even though my character is a sex worker with clear boundaries. He had established a new persona with alter self, kidnapped her actual love interest, and sicced the party on some unsuspecting thugs to try to go on a heroic adventure with her and win her heart.

It was so juicy and convoluted but I keep seeing my friends face wailing, “You stab Red Star?!” And it’s like the Miette meme. You stab Red Star? You stab his body like the villain? Oh! Jail for Orion! Jail for one thousand years!

AH HI i meant to answer this like 4 times now and kept getting distracted with. Things. so here's the gist:

a supervillain announces he's after a set of magical macguffins, but in truth he doesn't really care and just wants to keep an eye on his little brother, a new superhero around town (unaware his brother's a villain). his partner in crime/literal romantic partner is the one actually after the macguffins and is using his partner's influence to get them so he can Take Over The World!™️. the supervillain, his partner, and their henchmen have to get the macguffins, while the heroes scramble to stop them... until they realize they're all in over their heads and suddenly have to switch sides and work together when aforementioned partner shuns the supervillain and Takes Over The World!™️ himself. will good prevail!? or will evil be evilly evil forever!? find out next time on-

a supervillain, The Mastermind, discovers the existence of a set of 7 magical macguffins* that, when combined, would give him the power to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!™️. However, they're scattered in different places all over Earth, so he sics a gaggle of his finest henchmen on a few of the distant macguffins while he and his partner in crime/boyfriend, Rayzre Blayde**, maneuver to capture the ones closer to home. However, the truth is that Rayzre is the one who really wants to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!™️, he's just clinging to Mastermind's power as a bridge to get there. Mastermind's real motive is just to be close to and protect his little brother, who just moved into town to become the superhero Lammergeier.

(Sidenote: Rayzre, Mastermind, and Lammergeier are all from the same Evil Top Secret Government Genetic Experiment Lab and are human-animal hybrids. These experiments also happened to give some [but not all] of the resulting hybrids superpowers. Mastermind and Lammergeier were smuggled out as little kids and raised as siblings, while Rayzre escaped on his own a decade or so later, it's a whole thing. it's a recurring bit that this lab just has the shittiest security and most of their experiments have just escaped or been freed as a result, lol)

a few weeks after their plan first commences, rayzre unexpectedly gets a visit from his teenage son, Gray. Rayzre genuinely didn't know Gray existed until he just shows up on his doorstep, but they have the same superpowers (shapeshifting into dragons), basically confirming their relationship immediately. From then on, Rayzre purports that his motive is to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!™️ for his kid. This is a lie that he himself believes - he really does want to provide for Gray but we all know he started this whole thing without Gray even being a factor in his mind. Gray immediately thinks he's the coolest dad EVER, but he is also a child and all of his other father figures have been shitty step-dads, so he doesn't exactly have the highest standards. He's just jazzed that his REAL DAD buys him BEER and shows him R-RATED MOVIES and it's AWESOME

MEANWHILE the henchmen are off doing their own thing for the most part. They know of the ultimate TAKE OVER THE WORLD!™️ plot, but don't realize how serious their bosses are about it, or just how dangerous the macguffins they're after really are. they're the ones doing most of the action-adventure heavy lifting, going globetrotting and dungeoncrawling and such. i'm being the least specific here because this group's arc is currently in the most nebulous state of development where like half of them are fleshed out characters and the other half are still two dimensional and don't have agency yet,

The exception to this are the two supervillains-turned-henchmen, Frostbite and Wildfire, which MM recruited personally into his inner circle due to their impressive rap sheet and because he knows the two of them are also from the same lab he was born in (see. it's a whole thing). guess what their powers are. guess. it's not at all obvious. this makes it sound like i have a clever subversion up my sleeve but i don't they're literally just ice and fire respectively

Rayzre was always vaguely shitty (in fact he's Mastermind's high school ex and the rest of MM's family kind of hates him), but he gets more clearly shitty the more powerful he gets. He's a deeply egotistical, arrogant person who thinks he's the protagonist of this story. MM gradually becomes disillusioned with him after befriending Frostbite and Wildfire, who actually treat him with respect, especially once they start pointing out to him what a douche Rayzre can be. (unsurprisingly, fb, wf, and mm end up in a poly situationship.)

MM finally decides that Rayzre's crossed a line when they go to heist a macguffin and Rayzre secretly brings a live firearm to the affair and points it at Lammergeier, who obviously shows up to stop them. When Rayzre puts his finger on the trigger, MM reflexively pushes him, and ends up making him accidentally shoot and ultimately kill a completely innocent bystander. this is traumatic for all involved. mastermind officially disavows him (and dumps him), but this just leads to Rayzre getting all of the macguffins for himself and finally being able to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!™️

Rayzre tries to get Gray to follow in his footsteps to become another manaical god-king while the entire rest of the cast turns on him - heroes and villains working hand-in-hand to take this motherfucker down. i won't spoil what actually happens here because i think it's cool lmao

(*the working name i have for the macguffins is Anima Crystals, but i'm not completely sold on that yet. a little too chaos emeraldy for my taste)

Yeah I'm finally adding the tag onto gifsets. Enough people guessed who the tag was for already so I thought I might as well, lol! I hesitated for a very long time because 1) he was on-and-off the F/O list for a long time until I finally built a version of him in my head that I tolerate, but god it was such... a rollercoaster getting to this point and 2) I don't ship entirely with the movie version of him because there's such a different version of him in my head, that it felt weird adding his ship tag onto gifsets. like. him sitting at a dinner table in a gifset, I'll look at him and think "there's a version of you in my head that I am so heavily involved with, but it isn't You." but hey. christian bale is so pretty.......... and whatever. the version in my head looks like christian bale too. so why not. it's all fiction and nothing is real and we're all gonna die, nothing in life matters :)

It's two months later and I've finally decided he's gonna stay on the F/O list even if he isn't really a... romantic F/O. I mean, he is? But he's not? But he is. But he's not. He's my boyfriend-who's-not-my-boyfriend. He's my serial killer bodyguard. He's my pathetic boytoy I drag around on a leash and if anybody is mean to me I just go "sic 'em, boy" take off his collar and let him go hog wild, and then I give him a treat for being my good dog.

In all honesty the reason why I'm shipping with him is because I need to rewire my brain into believing my F/Os love me, even the villains. Before I went through [vaguely gesturing to the trauma of 2023] a whole year of not being able to self ship without thinking any and all F/Os would hurt me, I was able to self ship with villains without any problems. Now it's insanely difficult to ship with anybody regardless if they're a villain or not, and I'm trying to feel like my old self again. This is where Pat comes in.

Somebody actually F/O recommended Patrick to me in my inbox a few months ago and they didn't tell me that he was a serial killer or a horrible person in general lmfao but they said... I'm paraphrasing here but they said something like "he is very intense, but he would be very protective and devoted to the one he loves" and that sounds like... something I need to get back into the habit of believing: all F/Os are protective and loving, they're not gonna be abusive towards me even if they're abusive villains themselves. Then my friend said "oh that's one of my favorite movies!" and sent me funny meme videos of Pat where he wasn't killing anybody, he was just. sweating profusely over business cards and crying hysterically in a phone booth. and I thought "wow I'm kind of in love with him, this is the most pathetic man I've ever seen in my life" and tbh if you know me long enough, you'll know a fun fact about me, I see a beautiful man sobbing his eyes out and that's it for me. it's over. I am so smitten for a pretty man who's shedding an unnecessary amount of tears. The more pathetic, the better. So then we joked that he was my boyfriend even though I planned to never see the movie (I live at Super Weenie Hut Juniors, I can't handle horror). WELL. I kept coming up with self ship scenarios with him even tho I only knew him from the business card scene and his crying scenes. Curiosity got the best of me anyways and then I realized "hey, if I'm feeling really attached to a villain right now, and if I watch this movie and come up with self ship ideas with him... isn't that healing? In a way? Having a really terrible person find a way to change and become a better person and to love me? Building a version of him in my head and believing he'd love me; isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing with fiction?? This could be a good healing exercise for me"

So then I watched the movie -- AND MY GOD I HAVE NEVER WORKED SO HARD TO SELF SHIP WITH A CHARACTER LOL DUDE THIS GUY IS INSANE. On and off that F/O list every few hours. I have never been on such a rollercoaster of emotions with a character. "I love him - oh god I hate him. I love him! I hate him. Oh this part of the movie is making me laugh so hard I have tears in my eyes. Oh god this part of the movie is so disturbing we need to skip it, I won't even acknowledge it happens. Oh haha I love him. Oh I hate him." Back and forth back and forth. I know he's the American Psycho™ so he's gonna be quite intense. y'know. but this was also my first horror movie just in general and I was very on edge shakily gripping my friend's hand LOL. And then the end of the movie made me feel a lot better because - well I won't spoil it, but the end of the movie really really helped me feel better about it, and if it didn't end that way, then I don't know if I would have bothered trying to put him on the F/O list at all. But I am a stubborn bitch!!!!!!! I want to get better so bad and if shipping with this guy is gonna help me then damn it all he is GOING on that F/O list!!!!

So he's officially on the F/O list now (even if he isn't really a romantic kind of F/O, he's still Something dear to me). Woohoo 🥳🥳 I feel genuinely 100% safe and loved with him, even if it isn't the "canon" version of Pat, there's still a version of him built off of that and that feels like a big win for me considering my circumstances. He isn't a main F/O by any means so he likely won't be sticking around my head for very long, but wrow. I love him. and he loves meeee!!!! and if I keep working very very very hard maybe I can ship with TF characters again someday, bc god I miss them so bad

Stroud likes his scrappy teen girls, huh? I respect that. A man can have worse stock characters.

While she clearly shares DNA with Kitty (insert the 'he she lost her whole squad' meme) she is her own character and I like that she's petty and irrational and unfair in ways that make sense for her age. Honestly she is so extremely 13-15 it is hard for me to imagine what she will be like once she is an adult. But yknow. Tossup whether she'll make it that far anyway.

Favorite moment

I go on about all the CEOs she kills but siccing a guy's dead ex-girlfriend who he murdered on him after he threatens to kill you because he thinks you're the weak link was a great move. Really set my expectations.

Idea for a story

While I respect Stroud writing technology out of the world because he simply does not want to deal with it, I would love to see Lucy Carlyle unleashed on social media. I think she'd do numbers (derogatory). She'd write lengthy screeds about ghosthunting procedures and then tell people disagreeing with her to kill themselves. Meanwhile Lockwood has a google alert for his name and George is on fantasy Sci Hub. They can still have their intervention like 'Lucy you are putting too much trust in mysterious beings whose true faces and intentions you can't ascertain, it's drawing you closer to a realm inimical to human life that will warp you beyond all recognition if it doesn't kill you outright' but it's just because she has some weird tumblr mutuals.

Also don't think I didn't notice that when Lockwood goes "yeah I told Barnes there's no way we're doing anything with the other side ever again" and the rest of his team loudly agrees with him Lucy is conspicuously quiet. She's keeping her options open. Maybe she wants to go beat up Marissa Fittes again. She deserves to.

Unpopular opinion

Leaving the agency when she did was probably the right call. She and Lockwood's clashing personality traits and priorities were bringing out the worst in each other and making everyone else miserable. (I am so sorry Holly.) They didn't really resolve everything either, so if that workplace relationship is going to work out they should probably get therapy. Bright side is there must be loads of child therapists in this universe right. They'd probably have to be dragged kicking and screaming though. Maybe if you told them the office was haunted and then locked the door behind them.

Favorite relationship

If Lucy and Lockwood have clashing traits that bring out the worst in each other, Lucy and the skull just share a lot of their worst traits already, and I think that's very funny. Instead of saying she is so empathetic and pure of heart that she can befriend sinister ghosts Stroud was like yeah they just both suck in similar ways and thus get on, to everyone else's confusion and dismay. Honestly surprised they got anything done during their flatmates era besides coming up with mean burns about their neighbors.

Also this is a hostage situation. I appreciate Stroud's willingness to make his leads complicit. Marissa delivers the classic "we're not so different you and I" villain speech, but she has a point. They're both trapping and exploiting the dead to protect their lives and careers; it's just a difference of scale, and once you've justified something, scale is negotiable.

However I'm very invested in Show!Lucy's doomed girlfriend so watch this metaphorical space for whenever I finally meet her.

Favorite headcanon

Talent seems largely random but Lucy is described as being connected to the other side even before she crosses over, so I think maybe she was a preemie or almost died some other way as a child and that's why she's Like That.

she’s grumpy and snarky and takes pleasure in being rude

she’s also incredibly rash and a little violent, but she’s not irrational – she’s actually very logical

she absolutely despises the emyrian empire (the empire which has conquered her country) and in particular the sentries (the armed police used to oppress anyone opposing emyrian rule by continuing to worship arlieni gods or observing their traditions and festivals)

andrea was born with the ability to see spirits – these are nature-related entities worshipped in the arlieni religion who normally take the form of colourful, glowing animals; they tend to leech off the energy of humans, so if they’re at a festival they’ll be positive but in a fight they turn malevolent; normal humans can’t see them – but she can’t interact with them

at the time the story begins, both her parents are dead: her father was killed in the war against emyr; her mother was executed after being caught worshipping at a secret shrine for an arlieni deity

she is living in a tiny garret and working as a scullery maid in the kitchens of the local baron

her inciting incident is that her best friend, rila, is taken by a sentry and in the fight to get him back she meets a bear spirit who actually speaks to her

they form a connection which allows andrea to use the powers of the bear

eventually, after various shenanigans, she is recruited to the revolution that is trying to liberate arlien

What are your answers for A10, B5, C4 and D7?

A10. Who did you have your first fanfic-related conversation with? What was it about?

Oh dear, I'm not sure. Something about some early Bale/Cristiano football rpf fics I think? If it counts as conversation that I talked back and forth with the author in their ao3 comment box and leaving anon guest asks on their Tumblr. It was probably @tylerparsons who's the sweetest but hasn't posted on tumblr in 11 months.

B5. Which story have you read more than any others? How many times?

This is tricky! I went through a lot of my history and I can't really say despite there being actual numbers. The most visited tend to be multichapters (there's a 78 chapter fic that I've visited 412 times), so I haven't necessarily read the whole fic through multiple times, just hit every chapter once and some of them multiple times. But a justin/seb fic i want you (to want me) by anonymous must be one of the top ones, it's a one-shot and I've visited it 47 times (some of those must've been me just getting the link to rec it tho)

C4. What thing that fandom loves do you actually kind of hate? Why?

I'm not into a/b/o which limits my reading. Same with BDSM AU. I want my characters to have agency in their desire, I don't want their dynamics dictated by biological determinism. I also hate A Ovechkin with a passion because he's a pro-Putin spokesperson who proudly flaunts his homophobia. I also scroll past most of the fics because HRPF is so centered around the Big Pairings and they're not my ships. And oh, so many people think that fights are the most romantic thing to do for your partner and I don't like that trope either. Nor do I think that a character dripping with blood is super sexy. (Aren't I a little ball of hate here?)

D7. Why did you leave your most recent comment? Will you share it with us?

I left it because I genuinely loved the fic and because I felt guilty that I hadn't commented it on my first read. I said that, and the reason, in my comment.

actually wait quimcourse is essential romeo deenstaynight lore i need every1 to know what happened or i'll die.

tl;dr all the way back in ~october 2020 this guy (he ended up being a sucky person as w like. half the people involved here) made an untagged tumblr post abt a bizarre + awful tma fanfic he found once which was 100% abt the author's self insert-ish oc having sex w every man in the podcast and uhm. in tma there was a character named mike crew whose whole deal was p much a trans allegory but like. possibly unintentionally. and there's an important plot point abt how he used to try and cover as much skin as possible bc of this massive scar he was trying to hide but after he began serving this evil god* (*oversimplification of the century) he began to embrace it and started wearing loose revealing clothing and it doesn't sound like that's that important but the way ppl describe him in-podcast is used to help understand the timeline and it's a bigger deal than it seems. and this guy. the one who made the post. his whole brand was centered around mike crew. so the part of the fic he made fun of was the fact that it had mike crew post-serving the evil god* wearing a turtleneck and leaving it on during sex. and also briefly mentioned another character who's like immortal* (*oversimplification) and from the regency period referring to the main character's pussy as a quim despite otherwise speaking entirely modern english.

and so in december of 2020. the author found the post and started harassing him, everyone who'd ever interacted w him more than once, and everyone who so much as alluded to the situation bc she's uncannily good at tracking down every post so much as vaguely mentioning her. the drama was stupid, one-sided and memeable and she was v pressed abt how her use of the word quim was justifiable and so every1 just sort of let this unfold for the night and then blocked her once it stopped being funny. the next day i made a joke abt mike crew's turtleneck to a blog called straighttma which was like. a tma parody* (*not quite) blog which speculated on what the podcast would be like if it were heterosexual. y'know. typical terminally online lgbt teenager shit. and added a little 'iykyk' to the end. a lot of ppl didn't know so i ended up giving a tl;dr in the notes.

fast forward to january when she found the post and started harassing me for misrepresenting her (made a joke in the REPLIES (NOT EVEN A RB. THE REPLIES) abt just how much cooking show rpf is on her ao3 profile. bc actually it was just inappropriately tagged master chef au rick sanchez/stan pines fic. bc that's such an improvement and so much different. and so everyone memed on her for a few hours and then realized how old i was (i was 15 but like. my bday's in november so it'd only been 2 months and the younger end of 15 is wayyy different than the older end of 15 so like. i was a Baby here) and got stuck on the fact that she (age 37) was being superr inappropriate towards me (bc again. this all started bc of a smut fic) and blocked her again bc it wasn't funny anymore. and then she blocked me before i could block her. presumably so she could still read my blog.

so then i made a joke abt her blocking me meaning that i could call her a motherfucker now (bc i'd been. wayyy too polite to her bc i was obsessed w everyone liking me at the time) and pinned it to my blog. then march rolled around and guess who took issue w being called a motherfucker and THREATENED SUICIDE OVER IT before dropping off the face of the earth for several days and siccing her fiance + sockpuppet account on everyone for 'possibly driving her to suicide' (100% done to frame herself as the victim here). she was fine and came back a few days later when every1 was ignoring her and i got so worried abt this woman over 2x my age who'd been stalking me for 2 months (she brought up things i'd posted which she had no business knowing esp considering i was blocked so she had to have been deliberately opening my blog) that i got physically ill bc of it.

then in like. may/june she decided to unblock me for a second time a couple days before i got a mysterious anon accusing me of cyberbullying. i dmed her a bit . she once again outted herself as stalking me . and i was. too nice once again. if only 15 year old me wasn't afraid of using the words 'raging cunt' and also made a post abt her being back then went offline. in the brief time i was offline it turns out she'd made another quimcourse-dedicated blog and started self-identifying as quimberlyann (a nickname we gave her derived from a word that means pussy btw. just a reminder.) and trying to reclaim the situation. she got lightly memed on bc by this point in time every1 was sick of her and then disappeared and has since deactivated. batshit crazy situation which i sometimes look back on fondly bc of the sheer wtf factor and also bc she was. so damn quotable. but then whenever i start to do so i remember the feeling of sobbing alone in my room bc i thought i might've killed a woman who had nothing but bad intentions regarding me and i'm more angry at her for deliberately pulling that stunt (bc that's exactly what it was. she had an active sockpuppet at the time. she was faking the whole way through and had planned it out in advance) for the sole purpose of hurting me than anything now. esp since i'm now old enough to recognize that's exactly what it was. and more than anything i'm mad that we parted on somewhat amicable terms when like. i hope she thinks of me as frequently as i think of her and i hope that just once the guilt from what she did to me makes her feel half as bad as she made me feel that night.

Let’s make one thing clear, we support Black women– period. Megan Thee Stallion has become the latest example of the mistreatment Black women often face when speaking up for themselves. Since July 2020, when reports first surfaced that Megan, born Megan Pete, was allegedly shot by singer/ rapper Tory Lanez, she has had to deal with the dual trauma of the initial shooting and the subsequent harassment by Lanez, his fans, powerful people in the music industry, and the overall effort to discredit her.

Gun violence is an issue that continues to disproportionately impact Black women. According to a 2022 study, “Black women are three times more likely to be fatally shot by an intimate partner compared to white women.” (Megan has denied having an intimate relationship with Lanez.) During a particularly fraught time in hip hop, when we’ve lost so many artists to gun violence, including the recent murder of rapper Takeoff, it’s difficult to witness the continued minimizing and victim blaming of Megan by her peers in the business.

Reports surfaced that Megan had been shot by an unreported assailant while with Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, his bodyguard, and Megan’s friend at the time Kelsey Nicole when leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s house.

Page Six exclusively reported that Lanez had officially been named as a potential suspect in the shooting. “Tory fired the shots from within the vehicle while Megan was outside trying to leave,” a source told the outlet. “There is video and the police are investigating. This is a case of a man physically harming and abusing a woman.”

It was also reported around this time that Megan unfollowed the singer on Instagram. 

July 22, 2020

Megan gets on Twitter to clap back at reality star Draya Michele who went on a podcast and suggested that Lanez and Megan “had some sort of Bobby and Whitney love that drove them down this type of road" and joked that “I want you to like me so much you shoot me in the foot too."

“Dumb bitch that shit ain’t fucking funny who tf jokes about getting shot by a nigga,” Megan tweeted. 

Michele would later apologize saying that her attempt at a joke fell flat and that "I truly don’t glorify domestic violence... I was trying to say just love me deeply."

July 23, 2020

Podcaster Adam22 reports that sources told him that Megan and Lanez were in a sexual relationship and that there was a flirtation between Jenner and Lanez at the party. Their interaction reportedly caused Megan to become jealous and start “violating his ass” and “really shitting on him.”That same day, rapper Cam’ron received backlash on social media after posting a transphobic comment about Megan saying, "Tory Lanez saw that dick and started shootn..IDC what no one say."

Rapper 50 Cent issues an apology to Megan after posting a meme depicting the Grammy award-winner as the character Ricky from the film Boyz n the Hood as he’s being shot.

“👀Damn I didn’t think this shit was real,🤦♂️It sounded so crazy @theestallion i’m glad your [sic] feeling better and i hope you can accept my apology. I posted a meme that was floating around. I wouldn’t have done that if i knew you was really hurt sorry. 🤷🏽♂️," he wrote.

Megan gets on IG live and confirms that Lanez allegedly shot her. “Since y’all hoes so worried ’bout it, yes, this nigga Tory shot me,” she said. “You shot me. And you got your publicist and your people going to these blogs lying and shit. Stop lying. Why lie? I don’t understand. I tried to keep the situation off the internet, but you dragging it.

She continued, “You really fucking dragging it. Motherfuckers talking about I hit this nigga. I never hit you. Motherfuckers like, ‘Oh she mad ’cause he was trying to fuck with Kylie.’ No, I wasn’t. Like, you dry shot me. Like, everybody in the car – there’s only four motherfuckers in the car: me, you, my homegirl, and your security. I get out the car, I’m done arguing. I don’t wanna argue no more. I get out, I’m walking away. This nigga, from outside the back seat of the car, start shooting me. You shot me!”

She also addressed rumors that the injury to her foot was actually caused by broken glass. “I ain’t get cut by no glass, but let me tell you why they’re saying that: the people in the neighborhood –there’s a witness – when the police came because the neighbors called the police – this did not happen at Kylie’s house.” She continued, “This happened damn near back at the house I was staying at. I was just trying to get home. We were five minutes away from my spot. The police come and I’m scared.”

“All this shit going on with the police. The police are shooting motherfuckers for anything. The police was literally killing Black people for no motherfucking reason. Soon as the police tell us all ‘Get out the motherfucking car,' the police is really aggressive,” she explained. “You think I’m bout to tell the police that we – niggas, us Black people – got a gun in the car?! You want me to tell them that we got a gun in the car so they can shoot all of us up? Nigga, I’m scared.”

25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?

So you’re getting two answers! One for a Canon character that I write often and one for one of my OCs lmao.

1. My OC, Archon, from my fic "Yet We Went On Living" is generally very minimalist and low maintenance, but he has a box tucked away in his footlocker that he will kill for. It contains a cracked datapad, an old radio, a couple of medals, and some handwritten notes, all from his old squad. His prized possession is a drawing from his best friend (and SIC) of the two of them 'after the war' and he keeps it tucked in his belt when he's deployed. He can't stand the idea of leaving it behind.

2. For canon: It doesn't come up very often in my fics, but Depa and Obi-Wan are casual (and unexpected) 'drinking' buddies. Which really just means they run into each other in the Halls and decide to complain about their friends, their missions, and (later) all the trials of raising a Teenage Boy. Obi-Wan once spent the evening sprawled on her floor, room spinning, moaning about the dirty socks Anakin leaves scattered around the apartment. Depa laughed at him and let him sleep under her coffee table.
