Song Review: Sierra Ferrell - “Fox Hunt” (Kimmel)

With a choice to make about showcasing her inimitable, throwback approach to country music or courting the mainstream on her television debut, Sierra Ferrell took the latter tack.

Appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Ferrell previewed the March 22 arrival of Trail of Flowers with the kick-drum-driven “Fox Hunt.” And while the song eschews the worst of what characterizes modern country, it also forgoes Ferrell’s quirkiness for a more radio- and TV-friendly sound.

Even her generational voice is restrained, save for one long note sustained at song’s end.

It was probably the correct route to take given the forum. But “Fox Hunt” is merely a hint at what makes Ferrell such a special talent; for that reason, it may also resonate with the public more than with her core fans.
