Your mother meets a new man, but he doesn’t seem very interested in her.

The doorbell rings. You’re in your room, in exile. Your mother warned you not to come out. To stay out of her way. That’s all you ever are, a bother.

Another chime and you turn onto your side and wince, touching your tender stomach. You exhale, careful not to agitate your achy ribs, and tuck your head under your pillow. You haven’t slept, not since two days before. You’re exhausted and edgy with your mother on the prowl for the slightest offense.

You hear the front door and the distant voices. Your hopes were spoiled earlier as your mother’s blithering conversation drifted in under the door. Thor didn’t want to do a restaurant, he wanted something homey. You wish they’d just go away.

You wiggle your nose as you pull the pillow snug and try to block out the noise. You miss Fen’s comforting warmth, his wet nose, and ridiculous groans.

After a while, you give in to the fatigue. The pain follows you into your subconscious and you dream of chairs scraping and a screeching voice, your mother chasing you around the dining room. Your sleep is far from restful as you wake with a start.

You squeak as you sit up, your bruised muscles straining. It’s dark out. The alarm clock betrays the hours past. You turn your legs out and let the blankets slip away.

You get up, soft steps across the floor to listen at the door. You don’t hear anything. You ease the wood on its hinges and peer out, the coast is clear. You bend your arm around your middle, shoulders low as you limp down to the bathroom.

The door opens from the other side as you near. You gasp as you reel, tugging at the tortured tendons of your stomach. Thor catches himself on the doorframe.

“Oh,” he utters in surprise, “I wasn’t sure you were around.”

You push your hand off your middle and rub your arm, “I’m not feeling well.”

“Ah, sorry, kitten, I hope I didn’t disturb you. Were you asleep?”

You nod and wipe your eyes with your knuckles, “you didn’t wake me.”

“Good, good,” he sidles out of the door, “all yours.”

“Thanks,” you hobble forward and hiss as your ribs thrum.

“Do you need anything? What’s happened to you?”

“N-nothing,” you turn back.

“Your stomach,” he looks down as you thoughtlessly touch your shirt.

“Nothing,” you repeat the lie.

He hums doubtfully but says nothing more. You lower your chin and pivot back, shuffling inside and shutting the door. His footsteps depart after a moment. You take your time and the heat of the water soothes your nerves as you wash your hands. You emerge and make slow progress back to your room.

Your mother’s door is slightly open, her voice seeps through as you approach your room.

“Thor, please, I’ve been waiting,” she pleads. There’s a grunt but you can’t hear his words, her response is shrill, “her? She’s napping. And she’s an adult. Don’t you worry about my daughter just–” The bed frame creaks, “fuck me.”

You flee through your door and close it gently. You quickly cross the room and flop onto your mattress, once more wrapping yourself in your blankets. You yawn and snuggle down, burying your face in the pillow.

Your eyes close for a second before the scuff of wood startles you. Then you hear steps, a few, then many, louder as they come down the hall, another set in fast pursuit.

“Sweetheart, please,” your mother whines, “I can send her away or we… we can go to yours.”

“Maybe not tonight,” Thor replies as the stairs groan under his weight, “it’s just not right. I’m not feeling…it.”

“Not feeling what? What do I gotta do…”

You snuff out their argument as you hum. She won’t be happy. You know what happens then. It doesn’t matter if you're sleeping or pretending to be. She’ll come and find you to take out her anger.

Your voice gets louder, louder, to override the storm below. Then it’s all gone. It’s silent but for your tuneless droning. You can’t stop as your dread builds, your mother’s ascent stomping up the stairs, your door swinging open and bouncing off the wall.

She tears the blankets away as you keep humming and cover your face. She has a shoe in her hand and brings it down on your shoulder as you rock and carry the rocky melody. You’re not there. It’s just another nightmare. She puts her knee on the bed, bouncing you on the mattress with the force of her efforts.

“You little brat! You fucking bitch! Grow up! Grow up! Always in my way!” She snarls like a wildcat, her blows landing faster and harder. Your song continues through sniffles and sobs. She’ll tire herself out.

“Kat?” The deep timbre rolls over the floor and gives you pause. It’s how you know it’s really a dream, Thor left. “Kat!” He barrels over and grabs your mother as you peek through your fingers. He rips away the shoe and flings it to the floor, “what–”

He shoves her so she stumbles and hits the night table, “Thor, sweetheart, please, it’s not–”

“Not what? What were you doing? I knew… I knew there was something about you,” he accuses as she brings her hands together, begging him.

“No, no, you don’t understand. She’s a bad seed.”

“She’s your daughter.”

“She’s a leech. She takes and takes and takes–”

“Don’t touch me,” he brushes her off as she tries to caress his arm.

You raise your voice. It’s all in your head. You’re going to wake up. Thor comes to the bed and touches your shoulder, your body quaking as the pain radiates through every inch. Your mother huffs as she paces like an animal.

“She hit me first!” She accuses.

“She’s in her bed,” Thor snarls, “get out.”

“Get out? This is my house. She is my daughter–”

“She’s your punching bag,” he snips, “I was coming back to… I thought maybe we could still have a good night but– you’re disgusting.” He turns back and leans over you, taking your wrist as he dislodges your hand from your cheek, “shh, kitten, I’m here. I’m going to get you safe.”

“Raindrops keep falling on my head…” you sing the words in a rasp, “but that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red…”

“Kitten,” he pets your hair and the bed lurches as your mother hits his other shoulder.

“Leave. Now. Out of my house,” your mother demands.

“Touch me or her again,” Thor stands and towers over her, “and you will regret it. And don’t you worry, I am going but I will not leave her with you.”

“Oh, you think you know better. You think you can handle her? She’s nothing. She'll drain you dry–”

“Take a look in the mirror,” he snaps before he faces you again. He bends and scoops you up, blankets and all. Your song peters out to a broken hum, “let’s go, kitten, Fen will keep you safe.”

Fic & Author Recommendations Wrapped 2022

This is a first I am doing this but I felt that I want to share what I’ve been reading for the past couple of months.

Some authors you may already know and some, maybe not yet. But what they all have in common is that they make really amazing stories which I believe should be shared to everyone.

The categories will simply be separated by Dark and Non-Dark. I think it’s easier that way, but I will mention either way if they (the non-dark ones) are fluff, angst or simply smut.

Essential Sabretooth part 1: 1977-2005

This is a guide to the most essential and interesting Sabretooth appearance from his first appearance in 1977 until M Day in 2005. A guide to his appearances after that point will be linked here when it is complete.

Early beginnings (Claremont Era)

Iron Fist (1975) #14: The very first appearance of Sabretooth in Marvel Comics. He initially debuts as a famous mercenary and hired assassin.

Power Man (1974) #66: Sabretooth appears as a hired mook with his partner Constrictor. Special note here that Sabretooth and Constrictor are technically on the side of the law in this appearance.

Power Man and Iron Fist (1980) #78 & 84: A two issue plotline with several comics in between, this story is the first we see of Sabretooth's bloodlust and compulsion to murder. We also see his softer side with his partner Constrictor.

Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) #116 and #119: Before Sabretooth's healing factor is firmly established, he goes up against Spider-man and then seeks revenge against him for scarring his face.

Mutant Massacre

The 'Mutant Massacre' storyline in which Mr. Sinister uses a group of villains to destroy the Morlocks.

The Sabretooth featured in this run is almost certainly a clone created by Mr. Sinister, and not the Sabretooth we have seen up to this point or will see in the future.

However, this is also the first time we see Wolverine and (a) Sabretooth interacting so it's an important run.

Wolverine (1988) #10: This is the first flashback episode to Sabretooth and Wolverine's backstory together.

Some important notes: Sabretooth's real name has not yet been established as Victor Creed and he is referred to as Sabretooth throughout.

Chris Claremont likely intended the setting of this flashback to have been the 1940s or 1950s because this was before Wolverine and Sabretooth's immortality was established. However, Claremont's ambiguity of setting and odd depiction of rural Canada suggested a much earlier timeframe to later writers, who imagine this occurring in the 1809s or 1900s, which later becomes its canonical timeframe.

Likewise, the actual veracity of the events depicted in this issue are of dubious truthfulness within the story. The Hama era of Project X strongly suggests that this incident is a false memory implanted in both Sabretooth and Wolverine to control them, and in fact evidence exists that it could not have happened– after all we meet Silverfox alive– however, later writers will contradict this and imply that it actually happened.

Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #322 and #324: While Sabretooth only makes a small appearance in these books it is a highly important one. Sabretooth appears here in Europe, still working as an assassin and being paid to take out a high profile political target.

This is the appearance that makes it clear that the animalistic Sabretooth from the Mutant Massacre (who is killed by the new Mutants in a brief appearance in the Inferno storyline) is almost certainly a clone and not the original Sabretooth.

X-Factor (1986) #51-53: Sabretooth is hired to kill Angel. This is skippable, but leads straight into the New Mutants appearance.This set of appearances establishes a later somewhat important enmity with Caliban.

New Mutants (1983) #90-91: These two issues by Rob Liefled are ugly and largely pointless but they do establish why Sabretooth is where he is when we next see him– which is the next major era for Sabretooth.

Project X Backstory (Hama Era)

In some ways this is the first really critical run of plots for Sabretooth which really codified his backstory and character going forward; to the point where this is the run where his real name, Victor Creed, is revealed.

Wolverine (1988) #41-46: This is the first real Sabretooth and Wolverine storyline. Larry Hama takes up writing duties here, and uses them to smoothly transition between the few ideas about Sabretooth that Chris Claremont established, into the larger concept he has for Sabretooth.

This section establishes their rivalry and history, building into the idea that much of what they know and believe about one another may be false. Throughout this arc Sabretooth claims that Logan is his son, an idea that Hama will soon reveal is the result of mind control they both underwent, as Sabretooth starts having flashbacks and breaks in his programming.

Wolverine (1988) #48-49: A critically important couple of issues where Wolverine discovers his and Sabretooth's past as special forces partners with Team X in the cold war era.

X-Men (1991) #5-7: These issues continue to probe Wolverine and Sabretooth's true backstory with one another, as Omega Red kidnaps and tortures Wolverine to discover the final outcome of a mission that the pair were on during the cold war.

Wolverine (1988) #60-64: this is the critical run where Larry Hama exposes the full scope of the brainwashing and programming that Sabretooth and Wolverine underwent together.

Wolverine (1988) #68: A flashback issue to another important cold war mission Wolverine and Sabretooth undertook as part of Team X.

Sabretooth (1993) #1-4: Also known as Sabretooth: Death Hunt. This is Sabretooth's first miniseries and a critically important one. It establishes his long held romance/enmity with Mystique, setting it during an incident during the cold war. It establishes another important point going forward– Mystique and Sabretooth's son, Graydon Creed.

The Basement Arc

With Sabretooth's backstory and character firmly established, the story now moves into it's next phase, the basement arc.

During this series of issues, Sabretooth has finally completely lost his mind due to the fragmentation of his earlier brainwashing, which has driven him into a now completely uncontrollable bloodlust.

He seeks help with the X-Men, only to find himself locked in a dungeon in the basement and berated and condemned by various characters, who believe he is beyond help, and unworthy of pity.

He is eventually semi-accidentally lobotomized by a half-mad Wolverine, and is reduced to a childlike state during the healing process. During this time he befriends abuse victim Tabitha Smith who shows him kindness and empathy, only to be condemned by her friends for doing so.

Sabretooth Special (1996) #1: At the end of this arc, Sabretooth breaks out of captivity and goes on a rampage, before attempting to commit suicide, preferring death to captivity. "Have you ever seen the end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?" he asks.

However, his suicide attempt fails and he is captured by the government, leading directly into the next arc.

X-Factor Era

Taking place primarily in the pages of a year and a half long run of X-Factor, this is another early core Sabretooth story. This story continues the repeated themes of Sabretooth being held captive and controlled by government forces who want to use him as a weapon, and the increasing futility of trying to control him.

Core interactions during this time are a continuing romantic arc and enmity with Mystique, and a newly established sort of dark mentorship with the character Wild Child who shares many of Sabretooth traits but in a much more pathetic and absurd way.

Sabretooth: Back to Nature (1998) #1

Loose Cannon

During this time Sabretooth is back to doing mercenary work and doing as he pleases, after finally having escaped the mental deterioration of his mind control, and captivity by the government.

Logan: Shadow Society (1996) #1: Sabretooth takes a job with the Hellfire Club that connects to his and Logan's mutual past.

Maverick (1997) #1-7: While not every issue features an appearance by Sabretooth himself, the main thrust of the story is Sabretooth being hunted by a figure from his past, following up on the events depicted in Wolverine (1988) #68.

Wolverine (1988) #126-128: Sabretooth crashes Wolverine's wedding and beats him up, before he, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde are forced to fight a team of magical ninjas that swap the trio's personalities with one another.

Gambit (1999) #7-9: Sabretooth teams up with Gambit against Mister Sinister and Sabretooth is allowed to take on a more anti-hero role by the narrative.

Uncanny X-Men (1981) #388 & Bishop: The Last X-Man (1999) #16: Sabretooth teams up with Mystique for some political machinations against the X-Men.

Weapon X (2000s)

During this arc, Sabretooth is captured, along with a number of other mutants, and forced into another Weapon X project which experiments on him and uses him as a weapon. However, being of sound mind this time, this goes very poorly for Weapon X as Sabretooth escapes and makes himself a problem for them.

Wolverine (1988) #160, 162-166: Sabretooth is recaptured by the new Weapon X project who proceed to implant his skeleton with adamantium like Wolverine's and try to use him as a weapon.

Deadpool (1997) #57, 59-61: Weapon X sends Sabretooth to attempt to recruit Deadpool for the Weapon X project. They don't know that Sabretooth is already plotting his escape.

There are several issues of Weapon X "pregame" that involve Sabretooth, and show how things have been going for the project.

Weapon X: Wild Child (2002) #1

Weapon X: Agent Zero (2002) #1

Sabretooth: Mary Shelly Overdrive #1-4: Along with the original mini, this four issue mini is the best Sabretooth solo miniseries written so far. A true neo-noir story and a tragedy, Sabretooth finds himself mixed up with an innocent young woman who is in over her head and running out of time. This story casts Sabretooth as a true romantic anti-hero. Set after his escape from Weapon X and before he comes back to make himself a problem for them.

Weapon X (2002) #2-12: Sabretooth makes himself a problem for Weapon X throughout this year long run. Some highlights include renewed clashes with Wild Child following up on their X-factor mentorship/enmity.

New X-Men (2001) #142: Sabretooth runs into Wolverine in a Hellfire club bathroom.

Wolverine (2003) #13-19: Sabretooth recruits Wolverine to help him on a job hunting down a figure from their mutual past. This is a great arc because it reverses the usual perceived dynamic of an animalistic Sabretooth and a civilized Wolverine. It's also some of the most time that Sabretooth and Wolverine spend talking so far.

Sabretooth (2004) #1-4: A really tepid and skippable book that doesn't focus much on Sabretooth himself. However, it's interesting enough for the twist, which is that Sabretooth is not actually the villain who's been killing people, as is assumed at the start.

Identity Disc (2004) #1-4: A fun but messy and easily skippable mini. Sabretooth and some other villains are recruited for a big heist.

Weapon X (2002) #26-28: Sabretooth returns to the pages of the Weapon X book for the end of its run, to clean up the mess. This run is great for the relationship between Sabretooth and fellow mutant mercenary John Greycrow (known here as "Scalphunter"). Plus we get to see Sabretooth in a Hawaiian shirt. The very end of this run implies that Sabretooth is pulled away by business with the Brotherhood of Mutants which we unfortunately never see much followed up on.

Black Panther (2005) #7: this "House of M" era issue implies that Sabretooth has been working for Magneto and the brotherhood of mutants for the past 9 months he's been off screen. Magneto sends him to kill the Black Panther and they fight. Sabretooth then disappears from comics for another full year.

X-Men (1991) #188-193: Sabretooth seeks sanctuary with the X-Men and hangs out on their couch for a while, while Mystique avoids speaking to him. He warns the X-Men about the so called "Children of the Vault."

💖 What made you start writing?

Like before before? Hahaha I think it was when I was asked by one of my buddies when I used to do KPOP Roleplays if I wrote fanfiction too. They pretty much said that I roleplayed with emotion and wanted to see if I could translate it to stories. So I did haha that was in 2012.

🙋‍♀️ Do any IRL people know you write fanfic?

Yup. My siblings, my friends and my boyfriend.

🥹 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

Hand kisses all the way. Either I write dark or fluff or whatever, if I put a hand kiss, I’m swooning hahaha

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

Hmmm I guess men in suits haha I mean, how can you not? Like whatever the plot is, there would always be an instance where they will be wearing a suit. I think majority of my fics have it haha

Your mother meets a new man, but he doesn’t seem very interested in her.

Note: <3 Another erratic drabble series. Appreciate any and all feedback. Love you all.

“It was a great night,” your mother sighs, “but nothing happened.”

The other end of the conversation is unheard, contained in the tiny speaker of the cell phone. You’re not overly curious to hear it, actively trying to tune out your mom’s side as you try to fix a misplaced stitch in the pattern. She’s much too loud to ignore though.

“He wanted the brat along. I mean, it’s nice and all. Shows that he’s serious but it was our third date. Third… and nothing.”

She’s quiet as you hear her pace, the scent of her body soap wafting under your door. After you got back, she was quick to leave you, sinking into the tub with a face mask and even more wine.

As usual, you add no commentary to her life, she is old enough to know better. At least you would hope so.

“Oh, but get this, his brother owns a vineyard. That’s money money. Oh, yeah–” she pauses again, “I’m trying to convince him. It would be an amazing getaway and the wine might loosen him up. It might be a bit early but it’s all moving quite fast… well aside from that.”

You get up and turn on your speaker, searching through your playlists and hitting shuffle. You go back to your bed, the single feels bigger than usual, lonely. You already miss Fen and his warmth.

“I think I’ll surprise him. He works from home so I could show up in something sexy…” You roll your eyes and push your cross stitch to the other side of the mattress, pulling the pillow over your head.

You just want to forget it all. The night before, your mother, Thor. It’s all too much.

You just want to be in your room with your little things. Your safety, your hideaway. The only place that was ever your own.

The house is quiet and empty. Your mother is gone, she didn’t say where she was going but you know it isn’t work. You spend the rare solace wiping dust from picture frames with a cloth.

None of the pictures are of you. It’s your mother and her girls, or the trips she took on holiday, or the work events where she was awarded some commercial prize for her sales.

If anyone were to guess, they would think she lived alone. You’re certain she wishes she did, especially since that night with Thor. She didn’t let you forget how you intruded on what should have been ‘her night’.

You straighten the image of her in Paris as you hear a car door. Sometimes you forget there’s a world outside these walls but that reality only scares you. You don’t know why. All those strangers, all the uncertainty. It makes your stomach tangle up like a spider web.

The front door clicks as the lock twists back. Your mother’s back already. You carry on your tedious work, pushing your nail against the fabric as you wipe clean the edge of the console table. A heavy thwomp startles you and glass shatters in the entryway. That’s not good.

You crumple the cloth in your hand and gulp as you face the doorway. Your mother appears, fuming as she kicks over a chair at the table. It clatters to the floor as you flinch. Her eyes flare in your direction.

“You,” she jabs her finger in your direction, “it’s all your fault. You’re always in the way.”

“What? Mom, what’s going on?” You clutch the cloth, wringing it in your nervous hands, “I was just clean–”

“Oh shut up!” She storms around the table and you stumble back, her heels hammering on the hardwood. She wears a long coat tied at the waist. A glimpse of her thigh as she advances upon you, “you just had to come along and now, he doesn’t have the time for me.”

“What? I don’t know–”

She pushes you so you hit the chair beside you. The impact sets you off balance and you fall over the seat, taking the furniture down with you as you land painfully atop it. You whimper as the cloth slips from your hand. You drag yourself away from your mother as she shoves the chair out of the way.

“Mom,” you put your hand up as she bears down on you, “I didn’t do anything.”

“You did!” She stomps her heel into your stomach and you exclaim, quickly covering your middle as you cough, “you were born.”

You push away from her, huddling against the wall as you bring your knees up, the hot pain sinking into the flesh of your stomach. She snarls and turns to grip the table and shake it in her anger. She spins and swipes the picture frames from the console table with her arm so the clatter all around you.

“Look at me,” she sneers as she stands with her hand on her hip. Her face is done up with lashes and all and the coat shows a hint of the scanty outfit beneath, only a trim of lace along her chest and thigh, “how can he be too busy for this?”

“I don’t know, I don’t know,” you sniffle and slide into the corner. “I’m sorry–”

She huffs and pivots on her heel, “well, maybe next time. But.. ugh, that beast of his too, the thing would not shut up. Barking and snapping like I’m some monster.” She rants as she marches around the table, “this is your warning, the next time he’s around, I don’t want to see you.”

“Yes, mom,” you rub your stomach as your eyes burn. You can already feel the bruise.

“Clean this up, you’re always making messes,” she snarls as she passes through the doorway.

You nod and gulp out, “yes, mom,” as you get to your knees. You shake as you gather up the frame, checking for broken glass. You replace them on the console, barely able to balance them as you tremble with adrenaline.

You take the cloth from the floor and stand. You make your way into the hallways and see the broken key dish across the hardwood, shards scattered and sharp. You made that for your mother in art class years ago. You bend to pick up the bigger pieces, your initials carved into the underside.

You’re surprised it lasted even that long.
