✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name?

OK so I think I've mentioned this before but Riku actually started out as a Link variant would you believe. I created him about 5? years ago now back when I was kinda coming out of my Zelda phase and into my Persona phase! I saw some really cool artwork someone did where they gave various smash bros fighters personas, I saw the Link one and was like that is cool as hell what if I combined the two.

Then as I started to basically become consumed by Persona and Riku!Link began to evolve as a character I decided to semi scratch him and turn him into the Riku I know and love today :] His original name was Rinku (the Japanese name for Link) but after doing some research I randomly came across Riku and saw it meant Land and Handsome. At the time Riku was an Earth Persona user (it was an element in P2 but now he's the other P2 element: Water/Aqua) and he's a handsome lad so the name really fit.

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

Well I guess I kinda answered that in the part above haha. I know I was actually supposed to do an OC chart for him where I would like show the characters that inspired him but I never got round to it, so I'll just list them here! The main ones (aside from yukamitsu but that should be kinda obvious cause well... they're his parents 💀) are Simba, Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet (the movie), Flynn Rider, Sylvain and Claude from Fire Emblem, and of course Link! Won't lie I guess I could be counted in that category too because I did put a good amount of myself into him.

Also I have been told he is like other characters too (unintentional on my part) and they would include: Karma from Assassination Classroom, Childe from GI (unfortunate fr but they do have similarities I won't lie 😭😭) and more recently Allister from Dragon Age Origins. Do what you will with that information.

@kitten-of-bast It is! There are many examples, but I don't think most people conceptualize it in that way. Once you really take an interest in animal behavior it becomes pretty obvious though.

It's accurate for me to say I'm a human-cultured lion. I was adopted by one group and always felt at odds with it, and I became aware of our differences over time enough to not fully identify with humans *or* feral lions. (I'm totally drawing parallels to being multiracial and not fitting in on that axis.) Simba was a logical leap for my mind to take, as a humanized lion. I'm a werelion as comfortable on two paws as four, smiling and speaking words and such, in the way humans around me do because that's how I was socialized.

To speak to your post earlier about seeing other lions and feeling negatively, this is relevant. I think the cultural divide between you or me and a wild lion would be jarring. We're still kin (in the classical sense of that word), but separated to the point we're almost entirely alienated from them.

Chimpanzees who get attached to humans and then can't socialize with wild chimps come to mind. Their "language" is too different, they offend each other, and things can get violent. But other chimps who became attached to humans are fine, they can mingle with each other. That's the category I see us (therians) in a way; our feral cousins would send us to the shadow realm but we can get along with each other. \o/

My thoughts are a bit messy right now but someone please tell me how THE FUCK I DIDN’T NOTICE THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN (SIMBA + SCAR) AND (MOBEI-JUN + LINGUANG-JUN) EARLIER?!?!?!?! I’VE BEEN IN THIS DAMN FANDOM SINCE AUG 2022 😭

Simba used to be close with his uncle Scar. Mobei-Jun used to be close to Linguang-Jun as a kid. (both were close to their uncles as kids and trusted them whole-heartedly)

Simba gets betrayed/hurt by his uncle as a child and left for dead after being banished(?) from the Pride Lands. (happens after his uncle kills his father, blames the death on him, then sends hyenas after him to ensure he’s dead) Mobei-Jun is betrayed and left for dead by his uncle as a kid (left in the human realm and forced to survive against grown ass Huan Hua cultivators) (both were betrayed by their uncles as kids and left for dead one way or another)

Scar wants his brother (who he kinda resents) and nephew dead because he wants to be king. Linguang-Jun wants his brother (who he really resents) and his nephew dead because he wants to be king (+ revenge for his brother stealing his wife-to-be) (both want their family members dead so they can be king and have tried to have their nephews killed multiple times)

I got this belated enlightenment while doing house chores and listening to Disney Villain Songs on Spotify (Be Prepared was playing) and everything just clicked).

New head-canons for me guys:

Airplane-bro was inspired by Simba and Scar when he was creating Mobei-Jun’s dynamic/interactions with his uncle. This has led to him making Disney references in multiple chapters of PIDW (and of course, cucumber-bro rants about plagiarism and how much of a shitty author airplane is for not bothering to think of new material).

Ya’ll cannot tell me that baby Mobei-Jun DIDN’T sing or do something similar to “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” when he was too young to understand the real dangers behind being a Northern Desert Prince.

I am now a firm believer of Linguang-Jun singing “Be Prepared” every damn time he tries to convince other demons to go against Mobei-Jun or assassinate him. Man’s gotta use his charisma and great singing voice somehow-

FUCK DOES THAT MEAN THAT BOTH MOBEI AND LINGUANG-JUN HAVE AMAZING SINGING VOICES-

What would be even funnier is if Airplane actually forgets where he got the inspiration for Mobei-Jun’s relationship with his uncle. As far as we know, he was either in his 20s or middle-aged when he died in his first life, and has been alive for around 40-60 years since he first transmigrated. He’s bound to have forgotten some shit from his novel (even if it’s related to his ideal man/wank character).

Imagine if one day Mobei-Jun send Airplane out to spy on Linguang-Jun because the old man has been coming off as more slimy as of late and is practically begging to be monitored. Airplane bro is pissed at both of them because:

a) His King is probably making the right move but he still has a shit ton of paperwork to get done for both Cang Qiong and the Nothern Desert as the Anding Peak Lord and Mobei’s unofficial official adviser

b) Linguang-Jun was just caught for another scheme three fucking days ago and Airplane is so damn tired of all the work he’s had to do to remedy the treaties and alliances his scheming screwed up

Anyways, time skip a bit and Airplane manages to sneak into one of Linguang-Jun’s bases and sees him singing “Be Prepared” to the crowd of enraptured and slightly horny plant demons from the west and just- blanks. Mind you, this happens BEFORE Cucumber-bro becomes Shen Qingqiu, meaning Airplane has been bottling up so many modern day references and songs for the past 60-80 fucking years.

Once Linguang-Jun finishes convincing the plant demons that yes, “murdering my nephew for me will guarantee you and your kin a stable food source and power within my court once I’m King”. He goes back to the Northern Palace and comes across the puny human that his nephew has been trying to court for the past 40 or so years. He’s about to frighten the subject of Mobei-Jun’s failed love life when said human sudden looks at him with a slightly manic smile (which looks even more unnerving since he’s standing eerily still against the palace hallways) and asks,

“Do you know anything about Mickey Mouse, Linguang-Jun…?”

Saw this challenge floating around awhile ago and decided to do it finally. Ngl, sorta lowkey makes me sad a lot of future guards never use other animals very much. Its a complaint I got with Vitani's guard too, since kinda erases everything Kion and his team fought for with bringing in other animals. But thats not here or there I guess. Anyway, here's my version ~ Kirafiki and his siblings had some name changes. Kirafiki is now Shukuru [thank], Joshi is Taurai [talk or speak], Ikki is Bikkita though goes by Ikki for short [anteater] and Teleza is Sune [beautiful angel].

SHUKURU "Thank" - The Fiercest: Shukuru is the secondborn cub of Kiara and Kovu with his siblings Bikkita, Taurai, Sune, Shari and Kali. Shukuru was something of a rival to his brother Taurai and they butt heads often throughout their lives. He looks up to his grandfather Simba and idolizes his father Kovu. He was trained by Vitani and Kion for his role as the Leader of the Lion Guard. He is known to be very serious and has little interest in childish play, in fact, some say even childhood was too childish for him as a cub. He knows how to keep a cool head in tough situations and is rather emotionally constipated, struggling to express his true inner feelings and be vulnerable in the wake of losing his sister Sune. Shukuru has a strong sense of justice and hates seeing animals being wrongfully mistreated, he is strict in upholding the balance of the Circle of Life and vows to protect others in honor of Sune. 

AGULU "Fights like a lion" - The Bravest: Agulu is the adopted son of Kion and Fuli and the little brother of his foster sister Nazapa. Born outside both the PrideLands and Tree of Life, Agulu lived with his pack consisting of his parents, siblings and other kin. Stupid and brave to a fault, Agulu taunted a chimpanzee troop oneday and was viciously attacked. They slayed his pack when they tried to protect the pup and Agulu survived though was scarred horribly, losing a back leg in the process. Kion and Fuli found him and took him to Rafiki who saved his life in the nick of time. With no where to go, Agulu stayed with Kion, Fuli and Nazapa but struggled to adjust. Rather broody and grouchy at times, Agulu can be hard to trust others but when he does trust you, he is extremely loyal. He is a fighter and posesses vast courage in the defense of others however can hold grudges and come across as short tempered. He is also rather competitive and enjoys a good challenge.

TAIWO "First twin to taste the world" - The Strongest: Taiwo is the older twin sister born from a single egg, marking her and her younger sister Kehinde special in the eyes of her family. It was obvious to many watching the anaconda twins grow up that they had a rivalry, both proud of their power and strength and often competed over which sister was the strongest. They would do many things to prove it from hunting prey and battling competitors, the twins always came to a standstill as equals. Despite this, Kehinde and Taiwo had a very close bond and never parted ways angry at the other. Oneday, an arguement over who was strongest became out of hand and nothing could stop Kehinde and Taiwo from their fight. From dishing words to dishing blows, the sisters fought. Unfortantely for Kehinde, Taiwo saw red and in the heat of battle, suffocated Kihende to death.

Horrified, her family exiled Taiwo from their home and full of regret, she left without a fight. And without a fight she lived, vowing to never use her strength again... until one day she pondered ending it all on top of a large cliff overlooking the plains, where she then saw a group of animals get attacked by a pack of hyenas, and losing, too, and her thought to be gone courage and selflessness took over her instincts and rushed over to save these innocent animals from certain death. Shukuru and his friends were impressed by Taiwo's strength and invited her to join their team—the Lion Guard. Shocked by Shukuru's offer, Taiwo gave it some serious thought before deciding she would do it. Taiwo now attempts to atone for her sin by doing good in the Lion Guard and remembers to use her strength only in the name of protecting others. Taiwo is kind but quick to anger and very close and protective of those she is close to. After the death of her sister, Taiwo became much softer and peaceful despite her short temper. She is a good listener and willing to bear the burdens of her friends, as she understands how painful burdens came become and wishes to help ease their suffering. She is close to the members of the guard, thankful for their intervention into her life and finds Shukuru is only willing to let his walls down for her, leaving them with something of a special friendship. Taiwo doesn't like violence and tends to try avoiding it due to her trauma but when push comes to shove, she will do what she must to protect her friends and the PrideLands.

NAZAPA "Sacrifice" - The Fastest: Nazapa is the adopted daughter of Kion and Fuli and the big sister of her foster brother Agulu. Her mother came from a faraway land in search of a safe place to have her baby, tired of living in a harsh world where the future looked unkind for the life of her unborn child. A dama gazelle is a rare creature and with their numbers close to extinction, she felt the Tree of Life would be the sanctuary she and her little one sought, a safe haven for rare and sick animals in need of healing or a place to live in peace. However, Makucha, a leopard who loved rare and exotic things, caught wind of Nazapa's mother and chased after her. Right at the cusp of crossing into the safety of the Tree of Life, Nazapa's mother was brutually attacked and barely escaped with her life due to the sudden appearance of Kion and Fuli who'd heard her desperate cries for help. Despite fighting Makucha off, the damage was done and in the combination of the attack and labor, the mother gazelle died not long after bearing her calf. Begging Kion and Fuli to protect her baby, the pair agreed and took in Nazapa, having initially planned to find her a wetnurse to raise the calf before finding they couldn't let the baby go for they'd felt a parental love like no other for Nazapa. They knew it wouldn't be easy, predators raising prey? Who had ever heard of such a thing? They knew it could be done, after all, Simba had grown up with Timon and Pumbaa. 

She grew up close to her parents and the other residents of the Tree of Life, forging a bond with Princess Samra and the liger cub Khashi. So it was a sad time for Nazapa when Kion and Fuli decided the Tree of Life was no longer safe for Nazapa to grow up in the wake of the coming war with the tiger kingdom. With a heavy heart, they said goodbye to the Night Pride and made the long journey to the PrideLands; this time not to visit but to live peramantly. It was during this trip they discovered Agulu near the PrideLands and with time also welcomed him into their oddball family. Nazapa found companionship again with her cousins Bikkita, Shukuru, Taurai and Sune, eventually joining Shukuru's future Lion Guard as his Fastest. Despite being raised by predators, Nazapa finds herself not feeling strange by it, having known nothing else her entire life besides this. She sees things in a way prey and predator would never know, holding a respect only rare few have for the Circle of Life. Nazapa is known for her sweet and friendly disposition, not having a mean bone in her body. She is bubbly and happy-go-lucky, often bringing others out of their funks in the worst of times. She is paitient but sometimes come across as naive though has a wisdom many find perplexing.

ARAWAA "Moon" - The Keenest of Sight: Arawaa was born a rarity in her herd of normal, golden giraffes. The daughter of the herd leaders, she was taken as a bad omen. The only one of her kind, it made Arawaa the target of poachers who desired her rare snow white pelt. She grew up longing to look like the other giraffes, envious of their honey colored coats and often was bullied and ostracized for her unique looks. Arawaa's mother and father defended her from their scathing words the best they could but Arawaa knew they couldn't control what the herd thought and said. Oneday, during the night, a group of strange upwalking animals only known in legends as the Mgeni attacked. They kidnapped Arawaa from her herd and shoved her into a roaring monster that stank of strange fire. She struggled in her confines during the long journey that was full of abyse by her captors, chained up in a cage that slid to and fro. It gave her an idea and as the cage slid downward during the latest trip, Arawaa slammed against it with all her might and fell from the back of the Mgeni's monster into the ground. The fall broke open the cage and frantic, Arawaa ran as far and fast as she could before her captors could realize what had become of the young giraffe. 

During her quest, she collasped from hunger, exhaustion and her injuries, having been starved and mistreated by the Mgeni during her inprisonment. Arawaa awoke in a new place, one that also had Mgeni though these ones treated her kindly. They tended to her wounds and offered her food and water so she could heal. Arawaa stayed with these creatures for awhile until finally she was deemed strong enough for release. They put a strange tag in her ear and took her away from the wildlife reserve the Mgeni had. There were other animals there, ones Arawaa never saw again but promised her that they were in a good place. She'd given up finding her herd a long time ago and settled for traveling though kept her distance, still feeling like an outcast despite the new lands she'd seen. Arawaa eventually finds the PrideLands and befriends the Crown Princess Bikkita, having found companionship as she too struggled with fitting in with her pride due to her odd looks and disposition. In the process, she meets Shukuru and befriends him as well and with her height and watchful eyes, joins his Lion Guard as the Keenest of Sight. She and Taiwo become friends, bonding over their eyespots and Arawaa is often seen giving Taiwo rides around the PrideLands as the two girls hang out. Arawaa despite her upbringing can be very spunky, snarky and witty, often spewing one liners and jokes that take those who don't know her by surprise. Arawaa is contemplative, especially after the things she had seen that no other animal she'd met could understand, often curious about the world and philosophical. With how small her social circle is, Arawaa can come across as awkward. She is dutiful and vigilant, making her a good Keenest of Sight.

and bc i iove to elaborate, what my deal is with each of these movies under the cut:

The Lion King: childhood obsession movie. baby me was kin with simba. i would crawl on the back of the couch pretending it was pride rock and i would make roaring noises. considering how often i did this i'm surprised i'm not more of a furry now.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: what can i say. went through a big lotr phase, this one is my favorite bc the battle of helm's deep is my favorite battle/fight scene in the whole series (world?) and also the speech sam gives towards the end makes me cry every time.

Coraline: this movie genuinely scared the shit out of me when i first watched it at some point in high school. it also scared the shit out of my dad. now it's one of my all-time favorite comfort movies and also the stop motion animation fucks

The Shape of Water: i was looking forward to this movie for a full year before it came out and when it did i dragged as many of my friends to go see it as i could. nobody but me enjoyed it. guillermo del toro said monsterfucker rights.

Coco: in senior year of high school i went through a like four-month hyperfixation over this movie that was even more debilitating than my current ofmd obsession. it actually got annoying to me. i watched the movie 8 times in one week, probably something like 17 times total, and i cried at least half of those times). for months i was genuinely unable to have any conversation that wasn't about this movie. my friends hated me. i hated me. it was hell.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier: these days i never think abt this movie but i would be remiss if i didn't give this one a shoutout bc stucky was the world to me in early high school.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse: if i could only watch one movie for the rest of my life it would be this one. the animation the soundtrack the characters the voice acting the cinematography... the what's up danger scene changed my life.

Venom: this movie is so bad it's good AND it's a monsterfucker romcom. the perfect movie.

Nope: i saw this movie twice in 24 hours and it was even better on the rewatch, which is saying something bc the first watch blew me away. there are so many little details and foreshadowing and shit i wanted to keep pausing the movie to make sure i didnt miss anything. oughguhg the themes the metaphors... em and oj haywood my beloveds.....
