3:Does your s/i have a full backstory yet? Or is it still in the works? If it's done can we see it? Simon Erikson does have a pretty fleshed out backstory! Simon was born on an earth not unlike ours in the 1980's, a foster child after the death of his parents. Put into a neglectful home, he was lonely until he met with Hazel, the lost child of the Boss and Dr. Strangelove who had been displaced through time/space at the time of her 'death'. As a queer teenager in the 90's...prone to dressing feminine and often getting crushes on men (in modern terms, Simon is nonbinary and bisexual), he was often the target for harassment in his younger years. Something Hazel helped with. Simon was always fascinated with telecommunications, often tinkering with radios and headsets that he found at auctions and garage sales with the money he earned from part time jobs. He also studied psychology, with the hope of getting a degree once he entered college, with a particular love for Jungian Psychology, and spent a lot of time training with Hazel in various forms of unarmed combat to defend himself from bullies and to keep in shape. One day, as they were preparing for college, Hazel's mother finished her preparations to send them 'home' to her home universe. Having pretty much adopted Simon as another son in spirit, he was dragged along in their jump through space/time, becoming irradiated with the energy of the rift and gaining unique powers (tied to Hazel's). After that, the two of them were dropped into a world of espionage and mystery, it wasn't long before they were dragged back in time to the 1960's, to participate in a mission to unknowingly kill Hazel's own mother along with the man who would become Big Boss, and become embroiled in his Outer Heaven initiative. Simon has been Hazel's faithful comms officer since day one, and eventually gained the Chief Communications Officer position due to his unceasing service and dedication. He's also a huge flirt and hits on most of the staff at Mother Base/Outer Heaven. 8:Does your s/i have any kind of powers? Simon has time-based powers. Young Royals s3 spoilers for all 6 episodes

Alright, let's try to make this short because it's already almost midnight and I need to go to bed. (Edit: Of course it's not short, I apologize in advance)

I can't believe it's over. This has truly been a great ride and I am so thankful that we got a completed ending. I know I said I would write a fuller review when finished but now that it's over, I don't think this has to be an essay. Here are just some quick thoughts

The fandom has been pointing out that Wilhelm abdicating and August becoming king is so fitting. Because while it was the one thing he thought he wanted for the longest time, he actually realizes that losing Sara is worse. Now he has this ever ending punishment and will have to be owned by the monarchy forever while losing the love of his life. I didn't love that August became king at first but after seeing that analysis it is truly so fitting and I am fine with it!

Another brief note with August is that he actually cried so many times in this last episode (I counted 3 in the first 30 minutes alone). I am glad he was finally able to open up a little even if he did not get his ideal ending. (which I am ok with because he deserves it!) Also glad he and Wilhelm made semi peace with one another.

While I loved that Stella and Fredrika finally got together, I wish we got to see it a little more! Just because it was a bigger storyline in season 2 and I feel like those kind of stories always get tossed to the side in the end. I'm still happy they're together, I just wish it was a little more developed. I know they were short on time though and I blame Netflix for that. (This finale totally could have been an hour and a half long)

I love how the show opens with Wilhelm starting at Hillerska against his will in order to be a better crown prince and ends with the school closing and him leaving a free man. It's so fitting and I love that.

Love that Felice and Sara actually talked and rekindled their friendship. Their relationship and the friendship between Felice and Wilhelm are the ones I truly valued on this show and I am glad I got to see them end properly.

I do wish that we got a little more closure with Felice and her other friends. Like she kind of just ditched them when they went to New York. I know that they may not have fully understood her in the end but they were still her friends and they could have wrapped that up a little better.

I loved that scene at the end and all the flashbacks! I love how it is clear that Wilhelm gave up the throne for HIMSELF instead of just for Simon. You could tell that he never wanted it, even before he met Simon so that decision did not feel spontaneous and I loved it (and I was team Wilhelm stay king before this episode but of course Young Royals worked their magic in the last episode again 💜)!

I don't know where to put this but I also loved that we got to hear both of Simon's songs for Wilhelm. The one he made for his birthday and the one from last season with the improved school song. That made me so happy and Omar Rudberg's voice is so angelic!

Also side note but the Erikson's were so wishy washy in this episode. Like they both kept saying goodbye to their respective lovers then kissing them later and acting like everything was still semi normal. Like if I was Wilhelm or August during any of those scenes in the middle of the episode I would have been so confused.

I still have so many questions. Will Simon and Sara move? Where is Wilhelm going to go to school after this? Will he be able to officially abdicate this young or will he have to wait until he is 18 (I have no idea how abdicating a throne works)? Will Simon and Sara try to see their dad again? What will happen with Rosh and Ayub as I feel like their story was kind of abruptly over? Will the Queen get better or will having to train August to be king just make her even more stressed and sick? Still so many questions, but I feel like that happens with any series I finish. I have to remember that this series is just a pocket of time for these characters and they will live on past this series. I feel at peace with them and confident that their futures will be ok and to me that is all that matters.

I still have to watch the documentary and cry all over again with that. I am so glad this series exists and I promise I will stop gushing about it soon. Thank you Netflix for not letting me down for once! I hope everyone had a great time with the end of this series and all feel at peace with this story!

So Sara called in to report August. August is going to think Simon did it. Sara can testify against August in court as an eye witness, but that isn't super strong defense. Even if it does work, there are the drug bottles with Micke Erikson on them that will be brought up. Perhaps Sara takes the blame? As a way to apologize and show sacrifice to Simon? Just a little thought after rewatching.

Storia Di Musica #266 - Dead Can Dance, Aion, 1990

La copertina del disco di oggi, della serie di lavori che riprendono capolavori del Rinascimento, è un particolare de Il Trittico Del Giardino Delle Delizie di  Hieronymus Bosch, dipinto probabilmente tra il 1490 e il 1510 dal maestro nederlandese, conservato oggi al Museo Del Prado di Madrid. Il particolare è della sezione centrale, sulla Vita nel Giardino. A sceglierlo per quello che è il loro disco capolavoro sono stati un gruppo australiano, i Dead Can Dance. Si formano a Melbourne alla fine degli anni ‘70, e si ispirano alla new wave britannica di quei giorni e alle sonorità post-punk. Sono in quattro all’inizio: Paul Erikson al basso, Lisa Gerrard alla voce, Simon Monroe alla chitarra e alla batteria e Brendan Perry alla voce e alla seconda chitarra. Pubblicano un singolo, nell’agosto del 1981, The Fatal Impact, che esce in una compilation di una rivista specializzata, Fast Forward. Visto il successo scarso, decidono di andare a Londra. Passano mesi duri, fino a quando nel 1983 un loro demo arriva alla  4AD Records, un’etichetta indipendente  fondata nel 1979 da Ivo Watts-Russell e Peter Kent e che sarà fucina di talenti e del più sofisticato goth rock di quel periodo, avendo scoperto e prodotto  Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Modern English, Pixies, Throwing Muses, e i leggendari This Mortal Coil, una sorta di supergruppo con molti dei musicisti delle band dell’etichetta che pubblicherà tre dischi magnifici. I Dead Can Dance sostituiscono Monroe con Peter Ulrich e nel 1984 pubblicano Dead Can Dance: in copertina, una maschera rituale della Nuova Guinea con il nome in caratteri greci del nome della band, una musica che se parte dall’elettronica new wave si espande e diventa rarefatta, acquisendo dettagli e costruzioni che diventeranno iconici, soprattutto grazie alla voce magnetica di Lisa Gerrard. Partecipano al progetto This Mortal Coil, poi nel 1985 il primo disco notevole, Spleen And Ideal, in cui introducono archi, fiati, armonie che si rifanno alla musica gotica, contenuti mistici che troppo velocemente diventano “new age”, e da qui inizia un piccolo seguito di culto per la band, che è diventata ormai un duo Gerrard\Perry, compagni anche nella vita. Si trasferiscono in Irlanda, e lì compongono il primo capolavoro: The Serpent’s Egg (1988) è ancora più etereo e sognante, e un brano, The Host Of Seraphim, verrà usato a più riprese in documentari, trailer, altri brani addirittura campionati (The Chemical Brothers che usano un sample di Song Of Sophia per la loro Song To The Siren, nel loro disco Exit Planet Dust del 1995). Succede però che i due si separino come coppia, con la Gerrard che rimane in Irlanda e inizia a studiare le lingue slave, Perry che va in Spagna. Ma il loro binomio artistico continua, e le esperienze personali sono alla base del disco di oggi, il loro capolavoro. Lo intitolano Aion, una parola greca che vuol dire “forza vitale”, e nella mitologia greca è il tempo infinito, del susseguirsi delle ere, ma anche il tempo vitale e il destino a differenza di Chronos che è il Dio del tempo degli eventi, delle ritualità. Composto da 12 brani spettacolari, ha decine di influenze. Solo due brani sono in inglese, Black Sun e Fortune Presents Gifts Not According To The Book, il cui testo è una traduzione di alcune liriche del poeta spagnolo barocco del diciassettesimo secolo Luis de Góngora. Si aggiungono melodie medioevali e rinascimentali, strumenti antichi come la ghironda o la viola da gamba, sono capaci di creare una musica che sembra un gioco di aria e acqua nella breve ma stupenda The Garden Of Zephirus, polifonie vocali nella toccante Wilderness, i ritmi da mercato arabo della conclusiva Radharc, la ripresa di un Saltarello, una melodia tipica del Centro Italia Rinascimentale, ma su tutto domina la voce, da brividi, della Gerrard, che con naturalezza canta una glossolalia fatta di parole greche, latine, arabe, bulgare, gaeliche che sembrano una misteriosa nuova lingua nella spettacolare apertura del disco, The Arrival And The Reunion, accompagnata dal soprano maschile David Navarro Sust. Alcuni strumentali sono eccezionali e rimandano al tempo del dipinto di copertina, come Mephisto e la stupenda As The Bell Rings The Maypole Spins (il Maypole Spin è molto simile All’Intreccio delle tradizioni folkoristiche nostrale legate al Carnevale, e consiste nell’intrecciare serie di nastri colorati, seguendo un ballo ritmico, ad un palo). Ma il colpo da maestro è la ripresa di una canzone tradizionale mediterranea, The Song Of The Sybil, conosciuta soprattutto nel sud della Spagna come El Canto De La Sibilla e ad Alghero: canzone di genere apocalittico che la tradizione fa risalire addirittura a Eusebio da Cesarea, che scrisse, secondo Sant’Agostino, una Iudicii Signum, che il teologo da Ippona tradusse dal greco al latino nella sua Città Di Dio. I Dead Can Dance ne riprendono la versione in catalano, che è uno dei momenti clou delle celebrazioni della natività in molte zone della Spagna: qui la Gerrad sfoggia tutta la natura dolorosa del canto, in una prova vocale da brividi e indimenticabile. Il disco è acclamato dalla critica e rimane uno dei picchi di creatività di una band che toccherà il massimo successo con Into The Labyrinth (1993), che venderà 500 mila copie, record per un disco della 4AD. Rimangono un ascolto necessario, per la delicatezza delle scelte e la magia della loro musica, da assaporare con il tempo necessario per un viaggio spazio temporale, almeno ad occhi chiusi.
