By the time the girls were left to settle into the dormitory, Edith’s mood had seemed to sour. She didn’t appreciate the little frown that had sat upon her sister’s face for the better part of the day, this was supposed to be a momentous occasion for Edith!

“Oh Louisa, must you mope about all day? You’re going to get frown lines from that expression on your face. Are you really so jealous of how partial Miss Tillman is to me?” Edith questions her elder sister.

“I am not jealous of you Edith, I’m glad you have found a mentor in Miss Tillman,” Louisa assures, but she can’t help but be frustrated by her little sister’s naivety. Though she still hadn’t told her younger sister of her turning down Edward’s proposal. “But you are a young lady now, when are you going to realize that the universe does not revolve around you?”

“This is supposed to be a special day for me, but you’ve managed to make it about you!” Edith fumes. “Oh poor shy Lou, so meek and quiet... like a mouse. The perfectly behaved girl,” She mocks.

Louisa could not believe what she was hearing, how could Edith believe this when she had been such a devoted sister to her?

“I have spent the whole of my life at your whim,” Lou cries. “I have wiped every one of your tears, I have given ear to all of your gripes and complaints, been a constant companion and hoped for nothing in return. How can you be so thoughtless?”

The two March sisters fall into tense silence, neither sure how to proceed. Sure, they had squabbled before, but they had never been so coarse with each other. When it became clear Edith wasn’t going to speak, Louisa bowed her head and quietly wished her younger sister well before leaving the dormitory.

Ethel waited outside of the tall brownstone. She had been studying in Boston all semester, but she never quite got used to the hustle and bustle of these big urban areas, especially not in New York. Thankfully, this morning, the street was quiet, with just a few distant honks of automobiles audible alongside the morning bird calls.

Moses opened the door, and gladly welcomed Ethel inside. 

“You didn’t tell him, did you?” asked Ethel, looking hesitantly around the room. Moses smiled. She had been planning everything out for weeks; how dreadful it would be if one of his own housemates spilled the beans.

“I told George, but he would never tell. We know Francis badly needs the surprise,” said Moses.

Francis suddenly appeared at the staircase, bumbling down the steps at a breakneck speed. He only turned his head right before he hit the bottom step, and he stopped in his tracks.

“Ethel?” he breathed. “Oh, God, Ethel!”

Francis jumped down the remaining stairs and took his best friend tight into his arms.

“Ethel, what on earth are you doing here? I thought your semester didn’t finish until November.” Francis and Ethel broke away, but then Ethel grabbed both of his hands and gave them both a reassuring squeeze.

“I’ve graduated early,” Ethel said. “The college denied me an expedited plan of study for the spring semester, but Adeline wrote and convinced them to let me finish my courses in ten weeks for the fall semester.”

“But I’ve missed your graduation ceremony,” said Francis, and the disappointed look on his face was pitiful. “You didn’t even write about it.”

“Yes, and I am sorry for that,” said Ethel. “But I promise there will be more. I do intend to get my doctorate, regardless of what the admissions offices think of me.”

Something about Francis was briefly unreadable then. Ethel knew that Francis supported her academic achievements, so she couldn’t imagine a reason why he had such a distant look on his face.

“Is something wrong?” Ethel asked.

“Nothing,” Francis said, breaking into a smile that was much more like himself. “Does this mean that you’ll be coming with me to my sister’s wedding this weekend?”

“Well, you know I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” said Ethel.

Newlyn Fisher Clothing Set

I come to you today with this little historical seaside fashion interlude (before going back to work on more 1880′s sets). This set includes cable knit sweaters in high and low waisted, and variations on traditional fishermen smocks. More pics and download below

This set is partly inspired by the works of the school of Newlyn, a group of painters known to have depicted the surrounding of Newlyn, a Cornish coastal town, and its many fishermen in the 1880′s to 1900′s. And here is the painting that I referenced in the promo picture.

—————————  Cableknit Sweater  ————————

This is the sweater from the Werewolf pack without the little laced up strings on the shoulders (why do you always add these unnecessary details EA ? 😅). I’ve made a short version (S) for my high waisted needs and a long (L) version, for both masc and fem frames, as well as both adult and children. 

Cableknit sweaters originated from Ireland, in the Aran Islands, though other types of knitted jumpers called gansey already existed in the British, Irish and Channel isles. They were created between the 1890′s and 1900′s. They were initially knitted with unwashed and undied wool. Both the natural lanolin from the virgin wool and the knitted patterns made for water resistant sweaters and as such : good alternatives to the previously used ganseys made of oiled wool died with indigo.

 These Aran sweaters slowly became some fashionable sportswear item during the 20′s and 30′s, and later reached its peak popularity in the 50s’ and 60′s worn by the likes of Grace Kelly and Steve McQueen.

——————————— Vareuse V1 ——————————

Vareuses are a style of fishermen smocks with a V neck. This style was typical of Brittany fishermen though I have seen depiction of Norwegian fishermen for example sporting this style of smocks on 1880s paintings too. While I couldn’t find substancial informations on their origins and date of appereance, vareuses seem to have been used at least as far as mid 19th century and were still worn as work wear up til the mid 20th. 

It is said that traditionally fishers wore different colors depending on their fishing style : yellow ones for those shellfish picking, rust colored ones for those using fish traps, red ones for oyster farmers and blue ones for those fishing in the open seas.

Fishermen smocks were oiled to be water repellant and worn on top of clothes and knitted garments to protect them from water and keep them relatively clean.

On this 1st version of the vareuse I’ve not put any clothing “underneath” to allow for warm weather and for combinations with accessory shirts or turtlenecks.

This 2nd version of a vareuse include a cableknit jumper sticking out of the V neck collar. The set also includes an overlay to pick the color of said cableknit jumper.

Similarly to the vareuse, the crewneck is a style of fishermen smocks. This style is traditionally associated with Cornwall, in the north west of England. Cornish crewneck smocks were used similarly to vareuses.

Row of Gilded Age Upper West Side New York Brownstones.

When I started this build in late 2022, I ofc had no idea there would be a pack specifically dedicated to apartments coming out a year later. At most I planned for people to use mods, but I had also never used any such mods myself. All this to say, I'm honestly not sure how well this build plays as a rental! It is almost completely un-playtested and still largely unfurnished, and is only being released from the vault early in honor of finally getting rental residentials to exist.

But since the exterior facades and interior floorplans are done, its still an excellent shell for you to fill out! Only the first unit is (partially) furnished as an example for which rooms are which. In terms of build and furnishing, this is the wealthy decades player's dream, a Gilded Age townhome worthy of Upstairs, Downstairs.

Treat #2 : The Reformer

This treat is a set inspired by the Dress reform movement (a bit of the Aesthetic movement too, lots of overlap between these two) from the 1895 to the late 1900s.

Like the Aesthetic movement, the Reform dress movement dates back to the mid 1800's. It aimed at making women garments less constricting (for reasons varying from praticality, political leanings, supposed health downsides of corsets...). It was linked to feminism especially at the start and gave birth to the bloomers in 1851 for example.

Reform dress usually involved making it so that the main weight of the clothing would be carried by the shoulders and torso instead of solely the waist and thus get rid of the corset and masses of underskirts, to establish a "more practical type of dress that would facilitate a physical and productive life". This resulted most times in flowy dress, usually tea gowns. Like previously mentionned there's a big overlap between reform and aesthetic dresses since the medieval and antique (and even sometimes regency) influences fited the less structured reform dress silhouette of the late 1800's / early 1900's.

Once again this type of clothing wasn't well considered by the society at large, it took hold in specific artistic spheres such as the one surrounding the Wiener Werksträtte (a viennese artist association of which Emilie Flöge was a part of, the artwork is truly fascinating and very influencial look it up !).

This type of dress was so unconventional that apparently, the painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (who might I add painted prostitutes and such on the daily) was scandalised by Maria Sèthe Van de Velde's appearance when she welcomed him in a tea gown (see the blue tea gown below for reference) which he mistook for a dressing gown. I feel like this little anecdote helps to put things into perspective.
