#since most unis and colleges won't be having exams

One characters wants to be the owner of a florist shop (floristry business looks good) another works in a greenhouse. The first doesn't really want a science degree. But If one can't care for flowers then that won't do any good but a science major class might be too in depth for flower care. Though, you did say that Bachelor of Science is needed for nursery/greenhouse? So my second character needs the science major?
To own and run a florist shop, the first character doesn’t necessarily need to do anything. At least in the US. Just buy a shop and make it up as they go. They might not have the best understanding of the tools and things available to use, and if they don’t have formal design education then they will probably just be going with their instincts. And that’s not bad, per se, but I know my professors liked to say the difference between Floral Design and Flower Arranging is that Flower Arranging is putting flowers together to look nice while Floral Design is using the elements of design with flowers as the medium.
The Floral Design endowment at the university I attended also has a kind of “continuing education” design course option for people to take a two week class without enrollment in the university. Something similar to that may also work for your character if they are wanting to have some training and understanding of the business and how to care and prep the flowers and make the designs.
For your other character, again, it’s kind of going to depend. My university offered a Bachelors of Science for Greenhouse Management and one for Nursery Production, but that’s definitely for people who are wanting to be in charge of the greenhouse or nursery. The would be owners and managers, making overreaching decisions about layout and what plants to have and where to put them and how often to water them and all that. It definitely doesn’t require a degree just to work in a greenhouse. It doesn’t always necessarily require specialized knowledge or experience, though that can help. It could be a case that the character was hired as a basic laborer and learned about what plants need as they went while working there. Maybe they even stuck with it and moved up to higher level positions. My dad worked at a greenhouse while getting a computer degree (he might have claimed his farming experience as relevant, not sure what he did there).
And there’s always the case of people with degrees not being able to find a job that actually requires them and trying to use it to claim experience and get a job that doesn’t require a degree with the hope that they can move up to a more advanced position later on. That can be a bit of a gamble because some places don’t want to hire people overqualified thinking they’ll move on quickly.
Since you’re writing the story you can kind of make it match to what works for your story and your character. What position do they have at the greenhouse? Are they the sort that would have taken college courses? Do they want to continue working in greenhouses and nurseries? I would find it believable no matter what the answers on those are, really, unless you make them in charge of everything at 19 years old, with no experience. Except even then if you made the owner be related to them, I might still believe it.
I guess the overall point is, a university degree is an option for either of these characters, but it’s definitely not required in most situations.

In Germany it’s pretty much the same for owning a florist shop. Your character would however more likely rent the place than own a whole building because we don’t exactly have stand alone shops. The main difference I think you’d find is in how employment is handled and what it entails, but that’s another matter.
Instead of going to uni, florists here train as apprentices for three years and then get the ability to get recognised as a master florist by passing an additional exam. When I exam here the idea is that they go all out with their creativity and the flowers. Not all master arrangements are super big and flashy, but it remains a show of skill for florists. The exam can be done whenever the florist chooses after their initial apprenticeship. However they usually have to pay for the materials (for practice and final) out of their own pocket and the only real reward except for a new title and maybe some more money is the ability to teach apprentices, which doesn’t make it super attractive to everyone.
As for working in florist shops and greenhouses there are technically no degrees required, they are helpful for sure, but the store that I worked for wasn’t really recognised as a florist shop to begin with. It was something that they morphed their company into over the seven years that I worked for them. So they had a lot of people who weren’t florists and had no proper qualification to make bouquets other than a two-week crash course to learn the basics.
That being said, knowledge about plants is something that can be acquired like any other work skill and your character’s willingness to learn plays a bigger role in thier ability to do their job than whether they come with prior knowledge.
What job requirements your character would eventually face likely highly depends on how expertise is gained in the field. If the general requirement is a college education to some degree standards are going to be different than for an apprentice with solely educational or technical training or apprenticeships based on a dual educationsystem, because the focus is different for all of these and employers are going to look for different things.

yea- i live in india too <3 my mother tongue is telugu :) and choosing college and university is really difficult because now if you wanna join into uni, you need a free seat(reservation) for medical and for engineering you don't need it because they are more seat reserved and the division for girls seats is 33% (that's a good point, if girls would take engineering, but most of them take medical, do you know that?)
basically this is what i know but i don't think it'll be hard to apply because you get a good rank and percentage, colleges and uni would call you for admission, so yea- this is indian education system. i don't know everything clearly, please do tell me if i am wrong :)
lmao, roommates, i mean i'd love roomies as long as they are not chaotic but i love chaotic people :') and i need to write my boards and not until i get my results, i just have to wait till may :( my birthday is on feb 23, hehe.
my day went good yesterday and on saturday we actually went on hunt for medical colleges and last two weeks we hunted for engineering colleges, so i have interest in both. ngl i love biology but i hate medical because it takes all of my time, and i wouldn't have time to talk to you at least but i love science a lot since young :( well, my parents said "leave her for a month or two, she'll take whatever she wants too" lmao, i'm totally confused but they have me time ;)
yea- and most of the hostels don't allow electronics and they are pretty strict lmao, i think i won't choose a hostel because i'll miss all my friends, parents and you too <3 so i wouldn't risk my life for jailing myself in hostel for two years T_T
btw sorry for the late reply, i was busy on saturday as i said and sunday we went out for a little family trip, just a few miles away <3
and i have my second dose between 12 feb to 23 feb, so i think i'll go tomorrow. and i love how organized you are *sniffs* like really, i'm too stunned to speak. i wish i had an organized life too, i'm making them right by spending time with my interest i have on things, but it's still pretty hard to get used to the timings :)
anyways, have a good day/night akka, it must have been a really long day and read, i wish you to happy the next day and even more happier the next next day. (the cringe, bye T_T)
really thank you so much for always giving me good advice and somewhat taking care of me a very little :) thank you and i love you akka <3

😔😔 ANON IF YOU SAW THIS POST IM SORRY AND GONNA TRY TO REMEMBER EVERYTHING I WROTE
my mother tongue is tamil tho !!! :’)) i think our languages have some similarities tho bc my mom speaks/understands some telugu ! :o and that makes more sense !! 💞 i’ve actually heard about the seats and stuff from my cousins when they were talking about their exams 🤧 i live in the us and the male to female ratio is so similar here too because more girls go for medical than engineering :’) like my friend is a computer science engineering major and says all of her classes are a bunch of men and like 2-3 girls (or she’s just the only girl there) 😳
also although i studied in india for a while, i know more ab the american school system atm so i’m just gonna trust you on that 🤩🤩 i’m sure you’re right HAHAH and omg roommates can be tricky 🥲 chaotic roommates are fun but not when you need to Not be distracted 😵‍💫 i think my roommates are pretty chaotic but they all know when we need to concentrate and grind on our studying 🤧 also omg your bday is coming up pretty soon !! i’ll make sure to wish you on that day 🥰💝 with the time difference it would be on the 22nd for me which is my other friend’s bday ! :o but i put it in my calendar as a reminder 🌸🌸
Tumblr media
that’s great that you got to look at both colleges :o was there a campus that you liked better? 🥰 also biology is rlly good for medical !! but make sure you deeply consider what job/career you want in the future because i know people who went into medical who were good with bio and chem, but then they burned out because they couldn’t imagine going through it all to become a doctor with med school and boards 🤧 im sure the process of becoming a doctor is different there tho ! but take your time and you’ll know what to do !! i’m sure you’ll thrive where you go 🌷🌷 i’m glad you’re not staying at the hostel tho bc i cant imagine being away from my friends and family without being able to talk to them D: you need to be around ppl who are supporting you and checking in !! 💓
also omg pls don’t apologize for the late response !! i’m glad you got to spend time with your family and that it went well !! 💖💖 i was pretty busy these past few days myself because i’ve been trying to get ahead on work because i’m going on a little trip this weekend with my friends :’)) i had some time here and there to get to a few asks but i wanted to provide my undivided attention 🤧💗
omg you’re getting the second round of the vaccine ?? :o good luck !! the second was the one that gave me a fever 😵‍💫 but it was only for a day so i’m sure you’ll be good by the next day !! i’m sure you’ve already gotten it by the time you read this so i hope you’re feeling better now 🥰🌷 ALSO AAHH PLS i’m not that organized but i’m trying my best to be !!! 🥲 honestly i was super unorganized for like ,, most of my life HAHAH but i’m certain you can be organized too if you put your mind to it 🤩 honestly i think my interest in pc trading and the organization(?) that comes with it has just started applying to other aspects in my life
but i hope you have a wonderful day/night as well !! 💕 take care and drink lots of water ! (i wish i answered before your vaccine to remind you to hydrate yourself before 🤧) HONESTLY YESTERDAY FELT SO LONG but today was rlly relaxing and nice !! i’m gonna go work in a coffee shop tomorrow so it’ll be nice to have a week that’s more on the down-low 🥰 i hope you have a great week ahead as well <33 and of course !! i’m always here if you need to talk, vent, or need advice on anything ☺️ ily too!!!💖

hii gukyi, i'm a kinda younger follower of yours and you're honestly super inspiring to me. i really really wanna go to an ivy league or similar standing school, and i'm super nervous that even if i do my best i won't make it into any of them because there's nothing that makes me stand out (besides grades and extracurriculars, which a lot of the applicants i think already excel at).
that being said, how many aps would you suggest taking? going into freshman year of high school, i plan on taking two (ap human geo and ap computer science principles). i want to take a lot to boost my chances of getting into a good school because i feel like there's nothing much else that would make me stand out to the colleges.
sorry this is long, i've been super stressed about college lately bc one of my teachers has been drilling into our heads that we need to start planning for college and know everything open to us, even though it's another four years to graduation. if this is too long/mentally taxing for you to answer, dw!! tysm for reading this 💖💕
hello little anon! first off i would like to direct you to this ask i answered a couple weeks ago about my stats throughout high school--hopefully it will give you a comprehensive overview of what i did throughout high school and the stats that got me into my school (can't say which ivy league, sorry y'all)! this ask is long, under the cut is more advice. but before that:
ivy leagues are NOT everything. in fact they're honestly nothing. i love my school, and i'm proud to attend here, but i would most certainly be getting the same education at my state school, or at a small liberal arts college, or even abroad. you are so young. please do not set such a high goal for yourself so early. hs sucks but it can suck less if you try to enjoy yourself as much as possible instead of focusing on college and the future. please take care of yourself. please do not worry about college just yet. you have so much time, and you will be alright.
secondly, as i said in that ask, your personal statement and a clear and demonstrated passion are the most important things on your college app. if you write a kickass personal statement, that will do far more than any of your grades, your sat score, and your extracurriculars will ever do. write things that are close to your heart and that are about causes you champion. be proud to be who you are.
as for aps, i don't know? really, i don't. i only had 4 exam scores that i could submit during college apps season. i didn't even take an ap my freshman year--my school didn't let us. i have friends at my uni who went to crazy competitive stem schools that took 10 aps. i simply cannot say what the right number is. there is none. take what you want to take, and what you feel confident you can perform well in, and what will challenge you. do not overload yourself. your health and wellbeing are the most important by far.
i hate to burst your bubble, but taking a lot of aps does NOT make you special. i encourage you to try everything, because you will find a subject or cause you are passionate about, and when you do, try to hone in on that. demonstrate commitment to the topic. mine were history and languages. i loved them. i advanced grades ahead in them. and i won my school's history award (this wasn't even on my college app since it was an end-of-senior-year thing, LOL). passion and drive are what colleges love most.
don't sweat. you'll find your way.
good luck!
