The holidays were always a quiet affair at the Munsons.

A few gifts, wrapped in week-old copies of the Hawkins Post, placed under a modest tree from Merrill’s. Wayne’s famous (well, famous to Eddie) chocolate chip pancakes in the morning with a questionable amount of syrup and a reheated casserole from Ms. Jenkins down the street for dinner.

No church or family plans, just the two of them, a couple of beers (root beer in Eddie’s case until a few years ago), and whatever movie Eddie had insisted they watch before he turned the TV over to Wayne and the Christmas basketball game.

It was good. Great, even.

Eddie loved his holiday traditions with Wayne.

He did, but sometimes he’d catch sight of Ms. Jenkins welcoming her brood of kids and grandkids into her cluttered trailer or spot Gerald loading the passenger seat of his pickup with toys for his nieces and nephews and wonder what it would be like to have a big family to spend the holidays with.

Turns out, it’s loud.

So, very, loud.

The Hopper-Byers’ new house is bursting at the seams with guests. The entire We Survived The End of the World gang is here along with some guests — Wayne and Ms. Henderson. Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair stopped by for about an hour before excusing themselves to finish up holiday shopping (said in a hushed tone to not ruin Santa for Erica — as if she still believes, Eddie had thought). But mostly it was just the usual gang.

Eddie learned, in the form of Dustin’s “you’re being stupid” voice that it's become a tradition for them. Gathering a week before the holidays to pig out on food and dessert, play games, and exchange presents. Celebrate the year coming to an end and them making it.

As the apocalypse gang grew every year, the celebration got bigger and bigger until they were tripping over each other inside of the Byers house. That is, until this year when Joyce and Hopper got their shit together and finally moved into a decent-sized house on the outskirts of Hawkins. It’s no Loch Nora mini-mansion, but it works for them — even if it's still a tight fit when everyone is together.

Murray, Joyce, and Ms. Henderson are gathered in the kitchen — arguing over when to take the turkey out of the oven and the proper milk-to-cheese ratio in macaroni casseroles. A small radio sits in the corner, attempting to play Christmas music over the static. That’s the con about living farther out, Eddie supposes.

El and Max have claimed a fold-out table on the outskirts of the kitchen where they’ve been decorating cookies for hours, it seems. El’s simple and artistic, Max’s a chaotic mess of spilled-over frosting and candy sprinkles. (Eddie’s stolen one from each and thinks they’re both delicious much to their delight.)

The den’s been co-opted by Hopper and Wayne, and the TV volume turned all the way up (“We can hear just fine! It’s you kids that are making it hard,” Hopper gruffed when one of them pointed out the volume). They’re switching between basketball games while nursing beers and pretending not to hear the argument going down in the kitchen.

Jonathan and Argyle are hiding out in his room — smoking and trying to drown out the noise with whatever record he managed to pick up from the store he’s working at. Eddie thought about joining him, but the scowl he earned from Wheeler Jr. had him changing course.

The rest of them have taken refuge in the spacious basement. It’s too chaotic for Dungeons & Dragons so the boys and Erica have taken to playing an intense game of Monopoly. The threats he’s heard hurled at each other have been clever and downright terrifying. Way worse than anything they’ve uttered at his DM table. Those heathens.

For some reason, Steve’s taken on the role of the banker. Something about Dustin skimming from the top last time he held the role and played. Now, house rules say the banker has to be an NPC, and well, Steve fits the bill. Unfortunately, he seems to be struggling with the math of it all judging by the scoffs and annoyed eye rolls thrown his way. Eddie would go help, but he doesn’t think he’d be much help. Godspeed, Steve.

Nancy and Robin are there too, sprawled out on the couch and lost in their own little world. Occasionally Robin gets up to flip the record on the record player, but mostly they sit together, gossiping and talking about who knows what in hushed voices. Eddie might understand every little thing about dungeons and hobbits, but girl talk? That’s an alien language if he’s ever seen one.

As for him? Well, he’s hovering in the middle of it all. With Steve occupied, he’s taken on his babysitter role of sorts. Racing up and down the stairs to fetch whatever snacks the gremlins demand, rustling Max and El’s hair on the way in, and nodding at Hopper and Wayne on the way out. He narrowly escapes being sucked into being the official judge for the impromptu Murray vs Ms. Henderson pie off and almost makes it up to Jonathan and Argyle’s room before Dustin is bellowing for him.

It’s fun, mostly.

Getting to see everyone relaxed and having fun. A far cry from the last time they were all together like this back in March.

In some ways, it's what Eddie’s always dreamed it would be like. Being part of a big family, a cog in a never-ending machine of noise and organized chaos.

But it’s also becoming a lot.

Lucas is about to put a hotel on Boardwalk that has everyone shouting and throwing their own pieces at his head. Steve’s trying to keep them under control but it's a losing battle. One that pulls Robin and Nancy from their own little world to join the chaos.

And then there’s even more noise.

A crash from upstairs, the blaring voice of Joe Strummer coming from Jonathan’s room, more shouting, Wayne and Hoppers stopping, and giggles from Max and El.

Suddenly all Eddie can hear is noise.

It gets louder and louder and louder until finally, he’s certain his eardrums are going to explode.

Taking the stairs two at a time, he pushes through the chaos going on upstairs (dropped pies and frosting stains and shouting at TVs) and makes his way onto the wrap-around porch.

The crisp cold air is the first thing that hits him. Like an idiot, he ran out of the house without a coat or scarf or hell, even the warm hat Ms. Henderson knitted for him earlier in the month. He shivers, rubbing his hands up and down his bare arm as he tries to take deep breaths, watching as his warm breath twirls in the breeze.

As his body adjusts, so do his ears. He can still hear the chaos going on inside, but it's muffled now. Distant. He can hear himself think for the first time in hours and for once, it’s nice.

The snow is falling in slow but steady flakes, dusting the backyard in the white. Or, it should be white, but the hoard of Christmas lights decorating the house illuminates the backyard in reds and greens. It’s a real Christmas wonderland out there, now.

Reaching into the pocket of his jeans, he pulls out a pack of cigarettes and his trusty lighter. The first inhale of nicotine warms him from the inside out, sending the goosebumps packing as he focuses on his steady and slow inhale and exhales.

At some point he zones out, so focused on the snow falling and the repetitive nature of lifting the cigarette to and from his lips that he doesn’t hear the creak of the door or the heavy footsteps that follow until the intruder is standing shoulder to shoulder with him.

“Figured you might be needing this,” Steve says, hand outstretched with Eddie’s coat.

“Thanks, man.”

They swap, Eddie takes the coat from Steve and Steve takes the lit cigarette from Eddie, keeping it safe while he shimmies his way into the monstrosity that he calls his winter coat. When he’s finally situated in the plaid nightmare, he reaches a hand out ready to take his cigarette back only to find it perched between Steve’s lips.

Oh.

That’s different.

Sure, they’ve smoked together before. Bummed off cigarettes in the ally behind Family Video and in the parking lot of Palace Arcade waiting for the gremlins to be done. But they’ve never shared the same one. Never pressed their lips to the same filter. Felt the dampness of their mouths on their own lips.

“Sorry,” Steve says, lips turning up in a small smile as he removes the cigarette. “Couldn’t help myself.”

Eddie nods, unable to say much else as their fingertips brush when he takes it back. Is it weird if he puts it between his lips right now? Is he supposed to wait a minute? Let Steve’s taste linger for a moment. God, he’s being so weird right now. In the end, he brings the cigarette to his lips and takes the smallest inhale, nearly coughing as the smoke floods his lungs because he’s so distracted by the way the filter feels different now that it’s been in Steve’s mouth — as if that makes any sense.

“You okay? You sort of booked it out of the room.”

“Yeah,” Eddie sighs, before leaning against the banister of the porch. “Yeah, m’good. It just—“

“Got too loud?” Steve supplies, mirroring his position. “I get it. I remember my first holiday dinner. There were a lot less of us in ’83 but shit. It was still so loud.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a pretty loud son of a bitch.” Eddie’s caught off guard by Steve’s snorting. Stealing a glance, he finds Steve lit up in reds and greens, a smile etched on his face so deep he can see the spot where smile lines are going to emerge in the next ten years, catching the way his eyes already wrinkle in the corners. Fuck, he’s beautiful. “But, uh, yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever been in a house that loud before. Not even when I’m fucking around with the Corroded Coffin boys.”

“Well, I doubt that. Your music is very loud.”

“Uh, yeah, ‘cause it's metal, Steve.”

“So I’ve been told,” Steve says, smiling that soft, private smile again.

If Eddie was braver, he’d close the distance between them and press his lips to his. But if this year has taught him anything, it’s that he’s not. Not really. So he lets a quiet fall between them instead. They continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, passing the dwindling cigarette between them despite the pack in Eddie’s pocket being brand new, and watch as the snow steadily starts to pick up.

“You know,” Steve says, then stops.

Eddie turns, watching the gears tick in Steve’s brain as he decides what to say next. It’s magical watching it all pass on his face — the knit of his brows, his pupils dilating and returning to their normal size, letting the hazel shine through. The way his lips open and close like some gasping fish.

“If it ever gets to be too much, you can tell us. Tell me. Hell, I know I need a break after a few hours with those shitheads. Maybe we could come up with a code word or something.”

“A codeword? That’s might nerdy of you, Steve.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Steve says, waving his hand through the air as he bites back a chuckle. “But yeah, a code word. It’d be easier to say than “hey it’s too loud and I can’t think” you know. Plus, it would annoy the shit out of Henderson.”

“Well, then. Count me in. You know I love annoying the shit out of that kid. Gotta keep that ego in check somehow.”

They spend the next few minutes going back and forth trying to decide on a word that could work. Steve wants something common — a fruit or a vegetable. Eddie disagrees, saying it has to be something uncommon so they don’t accidentally say it, but common enough that it doesn’t sound weird casually being dropped in conversation.

They wrack their brain, throwing out silly words left and right until there’s a crash from inside. Their heads swivel in tandem toward the source of the noise. A flurry of shadows passes on the other side of the window as Steve shakes his head and sighs.

“Come on,” he says, handing the cigarette back to Eddie. “If we’re not at the table the minute the food gets served, we won’t be eating. The gremlins know no manner.”

Eddie laughs, stubbing out the cigarette on the ashtray precariously balanced on the banister, “Teaching ‘em manners seems like a job for their babysitter.”

“Nah,” Steve snorts. “Maybe one for their Dungeon Master, though.”

Just as the words leave Steve’s lip, there’s a shout from inside followed by another crash.

“Think it might be a job for both of us, actually,” Eddie laughs. “Together?”

“We need all the help we can get,” Steve says. “Together it is.”

Chapter 6 Eddies little groupie

In which Eddie is a very affectionate and possessive boyfriend and you cannot convince me otherwise also there’s some underage drinking plz don’t do that. Also ft Robin and Vickie and Laila and Steve so I guess that kinda makes it a double date?

TW- drug use, alcohol consumption, a drunk guy getting handsy.

Charlie begged her dad for Tuesday off with Eddie, claiming to have never taken a holiday off and working while sick unless she had a fever or was puking. “What if I could offer a sub, or even a few” Eddie mused, fiddling with his rings. Thinking of a few hellfire club members who owed him a favor or two.

Charlie raised a brow, shocked he was willing to cash in his favors for her. “Henderson , Wheeler, Sinclair and Byers. They can organize stuff and carry boxes so all you would have to do is run the register. They’re good listeners, take orders well.” Eddie elaborated trying to convince him. Mr Jenkins had waved him off, saying there was no need, and that he was happy to just close up shop early Tuesday so Charlie could go see him play. He could use a day off, but he might take him up on those subs if it became a regular thing.

She had a conference call with Laila and Robin that night, begging for them to join her at the hideout for the show Tuesday night. She was feeling nervous about their first public outing as a couple outside of school and could use the reinforcements. They had both agreed with only a little pleading from their redheaded friend. Robin volunteered Vickie as their designated driver, claiming that she owed her and refused to elaborate on it.

The girls started to plan their outfits, robin looking forward to the excuse to break in her new converses. Laila had complained she had nothing to wear. Seeing as she was just downstairs in the video store to close that night, Charlie insisted she come up to her room and raid her closet to find the perfect outfit.

the next day -

When school ended on Tuesday, in what was becoming their routine , Eddie met her outside her class and led her to his van. She carried a small duffel with her change of clothes for the show. She wore a Metallica shirt she had stolen from him, a pair of high waisted denim shorts and his red flannel wrapped around her waist and her usual docs on her feet. Her hair was up in a banana clip, little curls had fallen loose through the day. he just couldn’t get enough of her, it gave him a rush to see her in his shirt, with his love bites visible poking out under the edge of her clothes, and clearly on display on her slender throat.

His fingers were tracing shapes along her thigh as soon as he got her into the van. She giggled and playfully pushed his hands away as they pulled out into the main road.” Focus on the road, I want us to make it to graduation in one piece.” She whined, as he took his usual route back to the trailer park.

When they arrived, Eddie cut the engine and slid out to open her door, grabbing her ass firmly as soon as she climbed out. She swatted at his hands, laughing and spinning to offer him a kiss before they went inside. Swinging open the door and guiding her in, Eddie placed a soft kiss to the back of her neck. He twisted a loose curl around his finger, before guiding her back towards his bedroom. she chuckled and rolled her eyes “Again, already? “ she teased, making him laugh and nod. “Always, but I actually wanted to introduce you to someone.”

She coughed and glanced up at him. “Eds I’m really not down for a three way.” She looked worriedly up at him. He snorted and shook his head.” No sweetheart, I just wanted to introduce you to the only other lady in my life, my guitar.” He motioned to the beautiful Warlock electric guitar hung above his dresser. Her eyes slid over the photo of her wedged in the corner of the mirror behind it, before landing on the beautiful instrument. She had noticed it when she was there last, but hadn’t gotten a chance to fully admire it.

She stared at it for a moment, transfixed. Before she turned to him , fingers reached to trace his jaw. “Play me something?” He smiled and pulled her in for a kiss. “You are going to see the band play in just a few hours…”he started, already moving to pull her down off the wall. Charlie nodded slowly. “but I want a private show” She requested, sticking out her lower lip to pout at him and he couldn’t deny her anything.

He got her set up and connected to the amp, His fingers hovered over the strings, glancing up at her. He slowly started a riff from seek and destroy to watch her reaction, before slowly picking up speed and intensity. She moved to sit on the floor at his feet watching his fingers dance over the strings attentively. Her hands wrapped around his calf and her chin rested on his knee, as close to him as she could get without getting in the way of the music.

He had to stop as he got distracted feeling her breath on his thigh through his jeans “You are too much” he groaned, making her laugh softly. She played dumb “ What, you don’t like the groupie stare? You better get used to it , being a Rockstar it kinda comes with the territory.” He chuckled, swallowing thickly.

He stood quickly , careful to not knock her over, as he moved to set his guitar back above his dresser where she was safe. Charlie hoisted herself back onto his bed, crooking a finger at him and that was all it took. He ran across the room, jumping onto the bed laughing and burying his face in her shoulder, kissing the skin he could reach, tugging at the collar of his shirt she was wearing so well. She shrieked and held him close, her nails dragging down his back pulling him even closer.

The banging of a car door slamming followed shortly by the trailer door swinging open and shut jolted them out of their haze. Eddie groaned against her skin “my uncle “ and she bolted upright, tugging her shirt back into place.” Oh shit, what do we do?” She gasped and he laughed, shrugging. “Introduce you to my family. That’s what boyfriends do right?” He stood up and pulled her to her feet at his side. “ I’m back here practicing for the gig, be right out!” He called, pressing a kiss to the side of her head and wrapping an arm around her shoulders before leading her out into the living room

“Hey Wayne, I want you to meet somebody. This is my girl Charlotte.” Charlie smiled shyly from under Eddie’s arm. “Charlie is fine, Hi, it's nice to meet you.” she waved a hand awkwardly. “ You must be the young lady he was waiting up to get a call from the other night, never seen him like that before” he teased and chuckled, confirming her earlier suspicions and offering a hand out to her kindly. “Nice to meet you, I’m Wayne Munson. It’s nice to know somebody is capable of having a good impact on him. Heard you got him a real job.” She shook his hand and nodded “well my dad did, but I helped.”

He shrugged and smiled, eyes crinkling “ either way, I’m grateful, not everybody has been so willing to give him another shot after everything that happened. God knows he deserves it.” She could tell the isolation and hate that his nephew was experiencing truly hurt him too.” I’m not here long just stopping in to get my work boots. I’m off to my shift. So nice to meet you, Charlie. Have a good show, be safe.” And after collecting his things he was out the door, leaving them alone again.

They had just enough time to grab a shower, roll a few joints and smoke one before it was time to go set up for the show. Charlie paired one of her favorite leopard print skirts and some fishnets and usual docs with one of Eddie’s many spare hellfire shirts at his insistence, so everyone would know she was his. They loaded up his gear into the van, well he did , and she sat there looking pretty, which were Eddie’s exact instructions when she asked if she could help with anything.

As they pulled out into the road, she sparked a joint , leaning over to exhale her smoke into his face as they stopped at a light. “ you are my fucking dream girl” he groaned as she placed the joint between his lips with a cocky smile. “Yeah, I am pretty great, huh?”She agreed. He pulled on the joint and blew smoke out of his nose. “Are you excited to watch us play tonight?” He inquired, passing her back the joint and squeezing her thigh, making a little squeak escape her lips. She nodded and hummed in reply “very very excited. I can’t wait to watch my big bad rockstar kick ass on stage.” He smiled and gave her thigh another firm squeeze.

She laced her fingers with his on her thigh as she took a few lazy pulls on the joint before placing it between his lips. He took one last drag before passing it back and telling her she could finish it off. He preferred to have a little bit of clarity on stage and didn’t want to miss a bit of her in the pit watching him play, or mess up master of puppets and embarrass himself in front of his 5 regulars drunks.

When they arrived at the bar, the parking lot was by no means full but they could already hear the rowdy crowd yelling inside. They met up with the rest of the band in the back alley, and shot the shit for a brief moment before starting the process of unloading.

Charlie lit a cigarette and sat on the wooden crates piled up next to the dumpster to smoke it. She wore a disgruntled expression because Eddie had once again refused to let her help. “ you know I lift heavy crates at work all the time, right?” She inquired , handing him the half smoked cigarette when he paused to take a breather after carrying his amp inside. “ I know you could help, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna let you.” He said with a smirk, shaking his sweaty hair in her direction and stealing and finishing off her cigarette.

About half an hour later Charlie sat on the edge of the stage, a beer between her knees as Eddie, Gareth and Jeff started to get their equipment set up. She knew her friends wouldn’t be there for a few more minutes and was content to just enjoy watching him in his element. He was joking with his friends, laughing loudly as Gareth almost knocked over his own drum kit.

Eddie finished tuning and doing sound check before he settled on the stage behind her, nuzzling her neck. “ y’doin okay gorgeous?” He asked against her skin and she nodded happily. She giggled as his hair tickled her, offering him a sip of her beer. He accepted gratefully, taking a swing before handing it back.

“I think your friends just got here, just in time too because we’re about to start up.” He spun her around in his arms to press a firm kiss to her lips, she smiled into him and reached up to grab a handful of his hair as she kissed him back.

“Do great, have fun. I’ll be right there“ she pointed to the pit in front of the stage with a reassuring smile. He pecked her lips once more before releasing her from his embrace. She offered him her favorite black bandana from her jacket pocket. He tied it around his head to hold his hair back and collect his sweat so it didn’t drip in his eyes, smiling at her.

“Want me to grab beers for you and the boys?“ she asked and he nodded gratefully. She hopped off the stage, and he watched her ass intently. So intently in fact, Gareth had to smack the back of his head to get his attention back on the band.

She chuckled, joining her friends at the bar and watching him goof off on stage with friends as they warmed up. Robin and Vickie sat at the bar, sitting close enough they could hear each other but not close enough to draw any unwanted attention, not that anyone was paying attention in a place like the hideout. Steve leaned on the bar next to Laila“ Hey guys, you made it okay? “ She called out to them with a sheepish smile.

Robin made a disgusted face and shrugged “I almost wish I hadn’t, the floor is sticky Char. Why is it so damn sticky!? These are new shoes! “ Vickie laughed but patted Robins arm, glancing at Charlie apologetically “ you are ridiculous, have a drink and try to chill out.” Charlie suggested, turning to Harrington and Laila “Want a beer?” She asked , waving down the older bartender who knew the deal and handed her 5 beers and came back a moment later with a few more for the band members. Laila nodded gratefully and took a swig of her beer as soon as she got it.

They were just getting ready to start so Charlie grabbed them and hurried to place them at the edge of the stage, Smiling up at Eddie proudly. He blew her a dramatic kiss as he grabbed them, before turning back to the band passing them out , letting everyone hydrate before kicking off their first song.

Charlie gathered her friends to the floor amongst the drunks and she even got Robin to head bang a little. Eddie was truly a guitar god and it made her drool a little bit watching how quickly his fingers danced across the strings. “Close your mouth, you’ll attract flies” Robin teased over the music, gently pushing her friend's jaw back upright.

Charlie laughed sheepishly and reached over to clink their bottles together. “Thanks again, for coming out. Means a lot to me.” She was genuinely happy . She couldn’t remember another time in her life that made her feel like this. Not a football game , school dance or house party had the same energy as jumping around in a mosh pit with your friends to your boyfriends band. It was like a John Hughes movie, but better! Vickie and Robin had their arms around each other as they jumped up and down to the beat of the music, it made Charlie smile to see her friend acting so carefree.

She glanced over at Steve and Laila and was surprised to see they were dancing too, Steve holding on to Lailas fingers and spinning her around him. She admired how even though he was completely out of his element, he was making an effort. Laila spun in a circle under his arm, laughing as he grasped her waist and dropped her into a dip. It didn’t match the music style at all, but her best friend was having the time of her life. “ So you never told me your favorite movie” Steve informed her as he spun her again, fingers grazing her waist as he made sure not to let her spin too fast or far away. She looked taken aback by his question so he reiterated ” the recommendation shelf at work, I noticed you didn't label it, so I don’t know which one is yours” He and she shrugged shyly .

The song was ending so they moved to a table. “ it’s gotta be the brat pack film right? My money is on sixteen candles.” Steve brought it back up as they nursed their beers. “I think a person's favorite movie says a lot about them and while I love molly ringwald, that’s not it.” She began “my favorite movie is actually the shining.” Steve’s eyes widened at that and he propped his head up on his hands, leaning his elbows on the table. “ wow really I was way off.” He offered her a smile. “ I love the horror of course, but what I love most is the depth of it, the unexpected. The part that’s hidden under the part everybody sees. That’s what I love about the shining, plus Shelly Duvall is so talented! “ she was rambling now but he had asked for it. “ what about you? Let me guess… American jiggalo? “ and Steve nearly choked on his beer.

Charlie watched in amazement as Eddie played her new favorite song he introduced her to, master of puppets by Metallica. It was new and had only been out a few months and he was obsessed with it. He had been obsessively practicing and perfecting the tabs, playing along anytime it came on the radio, most of the time he was the one requesting it. He grinned up at her between riffs, offering her a cheeky wink as he sang along. It gave her chills and she knew she had a dopey smile on her face.

Vickie and Robin slowly made their way towards the dimly lit corner of the bar as the song ended, clearly trying to find a dark spot to makeout in. Steve scoffed as he noticed their departure ,turning to laila he offered her a winning smile. “Alright Lai, let's grab another round.” He rested his hand on her shoulder to steer her back to the bar. As they set up camp on the furthest bar stools from the stage so they could actually hear their own thoughts, Steve spoke again “So, we’ve been working together for a while now, but I feel like I don’t really know you…Are you always so guarded?” he asked as he handed her a beer and clinked his bottle to hers.

Laila raised her eyebrows, shocked he had noticed her demeanor at all. “My family moves a lot, my parents' job is kinda intense…” she started, drumming her nails on the bartop. “They are journalists, so they go where the story is. Which means I have seen a lot of different highschools. I got my acceptance letter and I guess I had kinda checked out, just put on cruise control until I can get to college.” She was rambling now, but he didn’t seem annoyed. She took a sip of her beer, willing herself to stop talking so much or at the very least slow down. He simply nodded “I bet that can be hard on a kid, making friends is hard enough without having to be uprooted all the time.” he empathized, though he had never struggled making friends, but he knew a few kids who did. “Do your parents plan on settling down, or is this a lifelong thing?” he asked curiously, raising his beer to his lips and taking a big sip. “I think they will chase the story until it kills them,” she said with a sigh. Steve mirrored her sigh, his mind running a mile a minute as he realized he had found yet another girl on her way out of town, just his luck.

They finished their beers and ordered another round. “You mentioned an acceptance letter…''Steve brought it back up and Laila looked up from the polish on her fingernails she had been anxiously picking at. “Mhmm, just got it in the mail a week or so ago.” she confirmed, looking at him curiously. “Why do you ask?” she wondered and he shrugged trying to act casual. “No reason, I just got mine too. I just haven’t really told anybody yet, but I've been taking classes at the community college and reapplied to a few universities.” he confessed, wringing his hands around the neck of his beer bottle and taking another gulp. “Me either, Robin and Charlie don’t know.” Laila almost whispered, feeling her heart race as Steve leaned in closer to assess her face closely for a moment. “We could just tell each other.” he mused, leaning back to motion to the bartender. “Can we get a round of shots?” he asked before leaning back onto his elbow to look at her.

“Shot first, then letters. Or Letters then shots?” he asked as he took the shot glasses from the bartender and set them on the bar in front of them. Laila wrinkled her nose “shots first, I need a little liquid confidence. “ she admitted, taking the little glasses and sniffing it hesitantly. “My kinda gal” Steve joked and grabbed his. “Down the hatch” he encouraged, before tilting his head back and swallowing the shot. Laila mirrored his actions, coughing as the liquid burned the entire way down. He patted her on the back and she tried to hide the blush on her face by letting her hair fall like a curtain between them. He reached up to tuck it behind her ear without thinking, smiling as her face came back into view.

“So, colleges.” he began again, feeling the effects of the liquor already. “On the count of three?” she asked and he nodded. They both held up their hands for a silent countdown before speaking in unison. “Purdue University” before laughing in shock. “No way, really? What are you going for?” he demanded incredulously. “Education, I really want to be a teacher” she offered with a shy smile, feeling a little dazed by the beers and shots in her system. Steve was laughing in shock now.” NO fucking way. Me too! What grade?” and just like that they dove into deep conversation, Steve ordering more beers and confessing how he dreamed of teaching middle school, and maybe even coaching a sport.

Laila smiled at the thought and told him how her dream was to teach elementary school, first or second grade would be the dream. Soon they had finished a six packs worth of beers and were discussing other dreams. Laila confessed the biggest thing on her bucket list was traveling the country in an RV to see all the national parks. Steve had choked on his beer at that, and she patted his back comfortingly as he had done for her. She continued in her drunken haze and told him how she had always wanted a big family, which he understood because of how small her own was growing up.

When Charlie found them at the bar and pulled them onto the dance floor , they realized they had lost track of time and the show was almost over. The redhead clapped and shouted for the band as they took playful bows and started on the last song of their set.

As the song ended, the band jumped off the stage to join everybody on the floor. Eddie had his arm wrapped around her waist, tugging her closer and kissing her sweetly. He smelled like sweat and cheap cologne and tasted like beer and cigarettes and she savored it, maybe a bit too much because the other band members and her friends started hollering and whistling. They broke apart sheepishly, still clinging to each other as the bar owner switched the sound system over and started playing normie music.

“Having a good time?” He asked , not releasing his grip around her waist. She nodded, lifting her beer bottle to her lips to take a swig before offering it to him. He took it and drained it, tossing it in the bin behind them. “ I’m so glad. We have to break down, d’ya wanna wait for me, and maybe stay at my place with me tonight?” She flushed excitedly at the idea of a sleepover and she knew she’d had too much to drink to go home and face her dad so she nodded eagerly. Eddie and the rest of corroded coffin excused themselves to head back to the stage. They started the lengthy process of breaking down their equipment and loading it back into their vehicles in the back alley.

“Ooh somebody’s getting laid tonight” Steve joked and Robin laughed loudly as she finished her beer and draped her arms over Vickie’s shoulders, clearly having had maybe one too many beers to be capable of being discreet anymore. Vickie was sober so she flushed and patted Robin's cheek affectionately. “Can you cover for me, say I stayed the night with you?” She asked her friends hopefully, grinning as Robin nodded amicably, Vickie promised to remind her of their lie again in the morning.

Steve loudly and drunkenly sang “EDDIe and CHARLIE sitting in a tree! KISSING!” She rolled her eyes in Steve's direction ‘shut up, you’re just jealous You can’t get past date number two, let alone second base.” She teased playfully. Laila laughed a little too loudly, before slapping a hand over her mouth to stifle it. “Last round everybody?” Charlie asked, taking their orders as she walked towards the bar.

She leaned on the bar and ordered one last round of beers. She had her forearms resting on the counter top when she felt someone sidle up next to her and rest their arm on the exposed skin of her lower back to hold her waist. She glanced up, expecting Eddie finished with breaking down already but instead found herself looking at an unfamiliar face.

He looked to be in his late 30s and more than a little drunk.”How bout I buy those for you, pretty thing like you shouldn’t have to pay for drinks .” his grip tightened and he tried to pull her closer and press her to his chest. Charlie squirmed, trying to escape his grasp. “ Don’t go hurting my feelings now darlin’” he slurred. Charlie glared up at him,panicking and lifting one doc clad foot before bringing it down heavily on the offending party's toes. He jumped backwards, digging her fingers into her as he swore under his breath “fuckin bitch.”

Eddie was right behind her before she could utter a word in response, or strike again. his ring clad hand gripped the wrist of the drunk asshole tightly, bending it“ I suggest you apologize to my lady and walk away,” Eddie spat as he ripped the man's hands off her. He released his grip on him so he could pull Charlie to him and wrap a protective arm around her waist, putting himself between them. “I was just trying to buy her a drink. "the drunk asshole claimed, raising his hands and backing away slowly, feigning innocence.

“I didn’t ask what you were doing, I told you to apologize. ”Eddie warned, his voice eerily calm and eyes dark as he jerked his head towards the bartender who was stepping from behind the bar with a bat in his hands. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know she was spoken for, be cool man.” The bartender looked at Eddie, ready to cut him off and kick him out.

Eddie nodded subtly, tightening his grip on his girlfriend , watching closely as the drunk was escorted out the door before he turned to Charlie, his tone shifted from acidic to concerned in a heartbeat. He released his grip on her waist and opened his arms to her. she dove into his embrace, burying her face in his neck “Did he hurt you?” he demanded, moving to pull her away from his chest to inspect her for bruises.

She shook her head “No, I think I broke his toe or maybe his foot, but I’m fine. He just ruined my buzz.” She didn’t want to admit it but seeing him be so aggressive defending her was kinda hot. “ Can we finish our drink with our friends then get out of here? I want you to take me home ” she looked up at him through her lashes and he nodded, gathering the beers and leading her back to the table occupied by the band and their friends.

He set the drinks on the table their friends had gathered around, forcing a smile onto his boyish features, trying to push through how angry the drunk had made him. “Cheers, to great music and a good crowd ” Eddie offered, raising his beer and encouraging them to do the same. His free arm snaked around her waist possessively so she slid her hand into his back pocket. They all clinked their bottles and took hearty sips, Laila maybe a bit too much so as half her beer splashed down her chin and the front of her shirt.

Steve chuckled and offered her his napkin with a cheeky smile “Y’know the drink is supposed to make it into your mouth.” he teased , causing them all to laugh. Without thinking Laila shot back “You're lucky you're cute Harrington because you are really annoying .” as she tapped the top of his beer bottle with the bottom with hers, causing it to foam up and spill.

Steve jumped to grab more napkins to clean up the nearly full beer that he was now spilling. Eddie moved from his spot beside Charlie to avoid the puddle. Now he stood behind her, one arm draped around her shoulders, the other hand holding his beer rested against the exposed skin of her waist between her top and her skirt . She had flinched at the cold but didn’t pull away, leaning into his embrace instead.

Soon the whole group, minus a playfully grumpy looking Eddie were reciting the lyrics to rock me like a hurricane by Scorpion, even Steve who was still working on the puddle of beer and foam, hummed along . Eddie hissed a warning to his girlfriend as she pressed herself up against him more firmly , wiggling her hips and singing along with the song playing on the bars speakers.

”And now we know why the floors are sticky,” Robin jokes, as Steve finally finished soaking up the mess and went to throw away an arm load of beer soaked napkins. The blonde chugged the rest of her beer and pressed a kiss to her girlfriend's temple.” On that note, I should probably get these guys home.”Vickie offered, motioning for them to dispose of their bottles, and did so obediently . She linked her elbow with Robin on one side and Laila on the other. Steve followed like a confused little puppy dog, his eyes widening with realization.

“ wa-wa-wait a minute, you think I’m cute?!” His eyebrows shot into his perfectly sculpted hairline. Laila laughed loudly, her confidence bolstered by the drinks and hours of flirty conversation “so what if I do?” She slurred, as they walked out the door. Their drunken banter echoing through the nearly empty parking lot.

They waved to their friends as they left and then before Charlie knew what was happening, Eddie was pulling her backstage, kissing her with bruising force. his chest pushed against hers, forcefully backing her into the door. It quickly gave way and they spilled out into the back alley where they had parked. They parted briefly, flushed and breathing heavily

“ I didn’t like how that fuckin guy was looking at you, trying to touch you. ” Eddie growled , as he moved to press her against the brick wall, his lips finding hers again. “ I gathered as much, but I could’ve handled him.” she murmured teasingly against his lips. “ I need to get you home, now. “ he groaned and pushed his hips to hers. She could feel how much he needed her and despite her tipsy state she led the way to the van with surprising grace. He swatted her ass as she climbed into the van and buckled her in.

The drive home was only uneventful because he had buckled her in with her hands under the belt so she wouldn’t drunkenly grope him and make Eddie give in and pull over to the side of the road and take her there in the back of the van. She was too tipsy to figure it out and honestly seemed to enjoy being restrained. “ Good girl, we’ll be there soon” he said as he rubbed her knee soothingly.
