hearing the opening notes of ‘sing, sing, sing’ and the collective groan from everyone at the swing dance. bc it is SUCH a good song and it is THE swing dancing song BUT it’s the full 8 minutes & 40 seconds you’re committing to dance to at an unending fast tempo and by the end EVERYONE is experiencing the gasping for air with burning lungs and quivering muscles and slippery palms and cramps under the ribs and beads of sweat running down your body like raindrops on a windshield and your feet weigh a thousand pounds but you can’t NOT dance. you can’t slow down. you can’t quit halfway. you HAVE to make it to the end. so ‘sing, sing, sing’ comes on and there’s the collective groan and then the frantic scrambling for a partner and then the aggressive jockeying for a space on the dance floor and THEN everyone comes alive to the sweet sounds of benny goodman & his orchestra and the feeling is unlike anything else in the world
It's time to put on a big show! Cowboy Bills is having a regular hoot night and the whole gang wants to get in on the act. Carmine and Shirley perform a touching duet, Rhonda and Edna plot a trumpet-laden rocker, but Laverne...well, her plans to become a balladeer go by the wayside after she clears out the place with her less-than-lovely voice. Determined to polish her pipes, Laverne turns to Lenny and Carmine for help, but her caterwauling doesn't improve. Will she become a balladeer? Or will Squiggy manage to talk some sense into her and get her to embrace her made-for-novelty-tunes voice? Elsewhere, Lenny tries to charm a comely waitress named Sabrina Bouche, whom we will never see again after this episode.
On pod, we go whole-hog into Lavenny shipping, the musical talents of the cast, and the magic provided by Cindy Williams' one and only directorial outing.

Listen to it at the usual haunts (AND NOW ON AUDIBLE :D )
poetry and musical theater get similar accusations leveled at them in terms of not being realistic, i.e. “no one fucking talks like that” or “people don’t randomly burst into song in real life” and sometimes i just want to take people by the shoulders and say. there are forms of art that are not aiming for perfect realism. are you capable of handling that
The world is oftentimes such an ugly place, but sometimes it can be so beautiful.
Like, when two choirs, one from Croatia and the other from Zimbabwe, met on the opposite sides of a Lisbon subway station and both sang to each other.
I unfortunately do not know what the Zimbabwe children choir sang to them (although it was so beautiful), but the Croatian klapa Kastav sang 'Kuća puna naroda' (a house full of people).
And let my reward be a house full of people,
my life, give me a voice, so I can embrace you with songs.
