Here's my favorite fics list! I know there's probably a million of these out there but I need to give fic recs and I have no one to recommend these to. These are all pretty popular but I hope maybe someone can find something to read. 💙💚 (After putting together this list I have learned I suck ass at descriptions and literally cannot explain how much I love all of these fics. Nephilim Babies, For Dummies: baby!Jack Destiel Drabble
For @sinnabonka Happy Birthday Ana💓🎉!!!
“Don’t be stubborn, try it!”
Dean Winchester had dealt with many difficult tasks throughout his life. He had stopped the apocalypse(s), saved the world on occasion, bore the Mark of Cain for a year, fought God's sister, and of course, died so many times he was starting to lose count
But those all seemed like mere child's play, compared to this.
"Don’t be stubborn kid, just try it!”
Without warning the spoon was yanked from his grasp by an invisible force, and went flying across the room, peas splattering on the wall.
(Read the rest under the cut)
Dean heaved a sigh, looking back at the culprit. Jack only kicked his feet happily, clearly amused with his antics.
"Yeah yeah, very funny super baby. You're hilarious" Dean said without any real heat behind it.
Getting a regular baby to eat was a difficult task in and of itself, but getting a supercharged, half angel baby with uncontrollable powers, to eat pureed peas?
So yeah, Dean would rather be fighting a nest of vamps.
Don't get him wrong he loves Jack. He's his kid for gods sake, it's just that they've been at this for nearly a half an hour.
And Jack was getting more creative by the minute.
So Dean tries to reason with him.
"Look kiddo, I wouldn't want to eat this shi-stuff either. It smells, and it's mushy, so I'm sure it can't taste good. But we don't have much of a choice here bud, seeing as how you a grand total of three teeth, so I'll make you a deal. You eat the rest of this slop, and I'll let you sleep for ten extra minutes during nap time. What do ya say"? Dean asked extending his hand.
In response Jack threw his hands up, screeching wildly, sending the tiny bowl of peas, flying at the wall. But not before spilling some on Dean.
Then, Jack giggled and grabbed onto Dean's hand.
This is what he gets for trying to make a contract with a seven month old.
But in Dean's defense, they are all 98% sure Jack understands everything they say. It's the angel in him.
With a sigh Dean made his way over to the cabinet.
"Wow kid that was a classic, but jokes on you, because we've got another jar. Better luck next time buddy"
Jack just babbled in response.
Dean slumped back down at the table, making sure to place the bowl next to him and not on the highchair tray (though he doubted it made a difference, uncontrollable angel mojo and all)
"Daaaaaaa"! Jack screeched, pointing excitedly
Dean turned to see Cas strolling into the kitchen.
His footsteps stalled, noticing the mess.
His comically wide eyes shot to Dean, as as he took in the sight before him. Green mush in Dean's hair and on his cheek, and Jack waving happily at him. Cas smiled fondly, amusement dancing in his eyes.
Dean tried to give him a glare, but he couldn't have looked very threatening with baby food on his face. So Cas just shook his head and wordlessly walked over to the drawer, pulling out a different baby spoon.
New spoon in hand, Cas shooed Dean out of his chair, taking his place in front of Jack.
"Okay, give it a shot Mister Confident" Dean scoffed as he folded his arms, hovering behind him.
"Hi baby" Cas smiled at Jack, which earned him a giggle in response.
Then, he scooped up some peas, and with an airplane noise, "flew" the spoon right into Jack's mouth.
Dean felt his jaw drop.
He couldn't believe this.
That little shit.
Cas turned over his shoulder, a smirk spread across his face.
"He likes the Buzz Lightyear spoon" Cas said matter of factly
Dean rolled his eyes fondly. That little traitor.
"You know, smug isn't a good look on you"
Cas "flew" another spoonful into Jack's mouth and without missing a beat said
"Yeah, well the peas aren't doing you any favors, either"
Tagging the usual suspects because I am once again, baby jack truthing

New fic rec list, and this one's a banger!
I CARRY YOUR HEART (I CARRY IT IN MY HEART by unicornpoe @danger-and-diatribes (Explicit, 26k)
Have you ever read a fic that you know a few lines in you will be reading again and again? A fic that you can feel rewiring your brain? This fic was it for me. The premise: when Cas is attacked and put into a magical coma, unable to awaken, Dean offers use of his vessel so that Cas can be conscious and with him while they find a cure.
I have talked about other unicornpoe fics in the past. I love that this author writes a deeply traumatized Dean and a deeply compassionate, patient Cas. And this one is particularly amazing. It's about trust. It's about letting yourself be loved. It's a Dean Winchester character study. It's so deeply compassionate and beautiful and it will make you hold your breath.

let the sky turn red from how we burn by playedwright @castumes (Mature, 10k)
A Cas character study and one of the most beautiful things I have read in a long time. Cas relives his memories in The Empty ad his family tries to recover him. A simple enough concept so beautifully executed that it made me ugly cry, which is something I do not do. There is a gentleness and a longing to this fic that left me completely undone.
It should be mandatory reading for Casgirls (gn). It's absolutely phenomenal.

Evangelist by emmbrancsxx0 @valleydean (Explicit, 334k)
As you may know from my prior rec lists, I am VERY picky about AU fics. I have read so many great stories where I finish and say: that was a great story, but it wasn't THEM. And there is a soft bit of disappointment in it, because I wanted a Dean and Cas story. But I trust Mallory and I was so right. The Dean in this fic is very early Dean in a lot of ways. Lonely, self-sacrificing, feeling the burden of an absent father. But he’s also very comfortable with his sexuality. I love him. He's so intense and so lonely. But it's the Cas in this fic that makes me want to break through the wall like the kool-aid man. He is weird and awkward and earnest and adorable and I want to put him in my pocket. He's similar to Cinderwings Cas and Under the Midnight Sun Cas, two of my all time favorite Cas iterations. And together? They have that eye fucking, nobody else exists canon intensity. I was begging the to kiss by chapter 3. Meanwhile, the story has so many canon parallels to ground it in the show. Truly, it's an experience.
It's a college AU. Cas is a rich student from a family that basically owns the town and everyone in it. Dean is a bartender and a mechanic working to support his brother Sammy (also a student), during long absenses of his father (a trucker and stone cold bastard). After a few chance meetings, Dean and Cas find that they can't seem to help being pulled into each other's orbit. And they are truly so obsessed with each other that they barely notice the sketchy shit that is happening around them until it’s almost too late.

Half Empty by Sinnabonka @sinnabonka (Mature, 37k)
Plotty and complex, this one will keep you guessing until the end. Dean wakes up after an accident with memory loss. He struggles to put the pieces together regarding a case with several missing persons while also dealing with confusing and spotty memories.
I don't want to tell you too much, because half the fun is trying to untangle what's happening. But this is a story about grief and love and putting the pieces back together. It's also a horror story full of existential foreboding. It's beautiful and twisty and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Operation Brain Bleach by Briston (E, 30k words)
This cursed and funny concept makes for a really fun read. Eileen and Sam are tired of waiting for Dean and Cas to get their act together, so they concoct a plan to make them pretend they are in a relationship. Dean and Cas are all too happy to play along, with increasingly horny results. It's funny and fun and extremely readable.
A Different Kind of Monster by roadtonowhere (lastoryx) and xfancyfranzi (Explicit, 89k)
When Dean accidentally hits a monster with his car, he's forced to bring him along as he tries to understand what the hell he's dealing with. Cas is like no monster he's ever seen, and his presence forces Dean to confront everything his father taught him. A canon adjacent exploration of what would happen with a few changes, this one is really good. I love the slow dismantling of John's philosophies on sexuality, gender and monsters. In a lot of ways, this is a character study and an exploration of shades of gray in the SPN universe, but don't let that fool you. There are also several really great cases in the fic that will have you invested.
It's hopeful and satisfying. It's an interesting take on what might have been.
Contingency by Cheerful_Shinigami (Explicit, 123k)
I really didn't set out to read two alternate S4 fics, but they are both so good and super different. This fic explores an alternative story where Cas falls for one of his prior acts of rebellion and he decides to save Dean from Hell before he breaks, maintaining the first seal and angering Heaven and Hell. However, Cas is so damaged that he has to possess Dean.
So much of this fic had me losing my mind. From reimagined episodes to some of my favorite Sammy content in a really long time (including a headcanon that I am obsessed with). The relationships are a bit healthier and everyone talks a bit more and honestly it's just a really great read from start to finish.
And if none of that tickles you pickle, help yourself to some prior rec lists.
And if you want to be tagged on my future fic rec lists, drop me a line.

@sinnabonka be careful what you ask for - here’s my (semi-coherent) rant on the whole Kripke saying ‘we would have hated his ending so much more’ thing…
The fundamental difference is that Kripke was always writing a tragedy. At no point did he ever pretend otherwise. Love or hate his choices, that’s what his era had always been building towards. You can’t watch 5x22 and say any part of that came out of nowhere.
(Sidenote, that’s also one of the reasons why people claiming Sam and Dean are ‘soulmates’ completely baffles me. The whole point of 5x16 was that Sam and Dean were never fated to be together. One of them was supposed to kill the other and they were supposed to spend eternity sequestered in their separate heavens, never fully understanding each other’s perspectives on their roles in the other’s lives. Instead they chose to love and trust each other, heaven and fate be damned. I mean, hell, remember this conversation from 5x22?
SAM: You're gonna let me say yes?
DEAN: No. That's the thing. It's not on me to let you do anything. You're a grown – well, overgrown – man. If this is what you want, I'll back your play.
SAM: That's the last thing I thought you'd ever say.
DEAN: Might be. I'm not gonna lie to you, though. It goes against every fiber I got. I mean, truth is... You know, watching out for you... it's kinda been my job, you know? But more than that, it's... it's kinda who I am. You're not a kid anymore, Sam, and I can't keep treating you like one. Maybe I got to grow up a little, too. I don't know if we got a snowball's chance. But... But I do know that if anybody can do it... it's you.
That conversation is the pay off for a fundamental misunderstanding that’s existed between them almost their entire lives, a misunderstanding that 5x16 and their separate heavens are built around, and there Dean is just laying it all out there. Is there anything that even comes close to that level of poignancy in 15x20?)
Dabb era, on the other hand, had decidedly not been building to a tragedy. The whole focus was on “there’ll be peace when we are done” and “both Sam and Dean acknowledge that they need more than just each other and neither of them can be happy when it’s just the two of them alone.” S11 -s15 had been repeatedly hammering in those points, only to suddenly do a 180 on both of those core concepts in the finale. Instead they tried to clumsily cloak a tragedy as a happy ending. There is not one moment of nuance in 15x20. It’s all such heavy handed storytelling, whether we’re talking about the stupid montage or choosing to highlight Sam’s isolation by showing him make only one slice of toast instead of two because get it? He’s alone now? (I wonder if Kripke watched that scene? God, I so badly want to hear him talk about toastgate. Let’s be real, though, I highly doubt the guy’s watched any episode past s7. His idea for the finale comes as an ending to his era of the show aka s7 at the latest. Spn has tonally changed so much since then.)
Also, Cas had only been on the show for two seasons by the time 5x22 rolled around, and was only a regular in one of them and yet he still played a prominent (and iconic - see: “Hey, assbutt!”) role in Swan Song and had a sensical and thought provoking ending. Not to mention, Dean showed 100x more emotion over Cas in 5x22 compared to 15x20, and, at that point, Cas didn’t have anywhere close to the level of emotional importance he would eventually come to have to Dean. And yet 5x22 honoured his role in both the story and in Dean’s life, while 15x20 completely ignored it.
So, no, Kripke, I absolutely would not have hated your ending more than 15x20. Say what you want about the guy (and believe me, I know his era had its fair share of problems) but cohesive storytelling has never been one of his issues. I have no doubt that he would have written a tragedy, but a) he would have built to that and b) if 5x22 is any indication, at least everyone would have been in character and he would have acknowledged that it actually was a goddamn tragedy. Because I can watch Swan Song and come out seeing that it’s a tragic tale about love, brotherhood, defying fate aka turns out you can fight city hall and free will is not an illusion.
I have no fucking idea what I’m supposed to take away from 15x20. It didn’t even try to say anything. If it did, I certainly didn’t get it.
So, yeah, I’ll take a well-written coherent tragedy over whatever the hell 15x20 was any day.

Okay, so I’ve read the chapter 👀 please please PLEAASE let Dean stop being a self hating douche and see that he’s not fully determined by his trauma and his juries, I need them finally to resolve their situation (no warning doesn’t = no pain, huh) another week of wait!
Tumblr media
It’s gonna be a long road for him to get through this, and the next chapter will be full-on focused on how he deals with the trauma he’s been through while being a Navy SEAL (I admit I got a little teary-eyed writing it, because I really wanted to make justice to this aspect of him). Like I said, it ends happy no matter what, but both Dean and Cas have a SHITLOAD of trauma to get through before wounds turn into scare tissue 👀 That said, next chapter is taking their relationship to another level, and I’m reaaaally looking forward to seeing the reaction to this one 😬

Summary: Raging storm, boundless cornfield surging, churning, like an angry ocean crashing its waves over steep shores. Dean comes to in the passenger seat of his car with no memory of what could have possibly brought him to the oddly named bar on the outskirts of the small town in the middle of nowhere. Investigating what first looks like a regular, run-of-the-mill missing people case and trying to bring back memories he’s lost, Dean ends up discovering truth he’d rather remain hidden. Welcome to Half Empty, where nothing is as it seems, and even shadows have secrets of their own.
Excerpt: “We should probably talk about what happened,” Sal starts carefully. “Remember anything? A name? A year?” Dean feels something twitch in the back of his head, as he spins the plate with the burgers mindlessly. “I know who I am,” he says with a huff. “Don’t Momento me just yet.”  A memory is fragmented: Rain patient in waking him. Cold touch of glass on his palm. The smell of gasoline.  Not puzzles, he realizes, but strips of paper out of a shredder. Lesser than words, just syllables, sounds.  “It was dark, couldn’t see shit,” Dean stumbles on the thought, shaking his head. He closes his eyes, marveling at the gleam and shine, finding no real worth in it -- just shards of glass smoothed by the ocean. Unprecious gems.  “Headlights were barely enough to see the lines on the road. Happened so fast...” he grabs at his head with another sharp pierce of pain. Growls, “The car started to skid.” He waits through the pain, breathing deep and slow. Outside the storm rages, the roar of the wind disturbingly resembling the one of the beast.  Sal’s voice startles him, soft: “What about some ice for your head, hon?” Dean looks through his fingers at her getting up and walking toward the bar, a low rumble of thunder following her like the train of a dress. Rolling through the place, the sound shudders and finally dies among the glasses clinking on the counter.  As Sal pulls the fridge door open, Dean’s eyes catch the poster taped to it (“Glass half empty? Just put more vodka in it!”). He picks up his burger and gets a bite of it. It tastes like nothing.  With his eyes trained at the front door, he keeps chewing -- waiting for the door to swing open. It doesn’t.  \*\*\* The road snakes among hills, endless. There’s turn after turn after turn, each next one bringing nothing but a new shade of black. The headlights cut through the veil of rain like flaming swords, fighting off the evil creeping on both sides of the road.  White dotted lines disappear under the hood, like the end credits of an old movie. The one he’ll never grow tired of. “What are we in the mood for?” Dean hears his own voice; distorted, but there can be no mistake.  He’s not driving and it never bothered him less, his fingertips running against the backs of cassette tapes in the box in his lap.  “Whatever you choose is fine,” comes the second voice, but the sound of it is odd, as if muffed by cotton in his ears.  Dean feels his lips curve into a smile, but the joy doesn’t follow. He looks down at the tapes’ names written with a black sharpie, but can’t make out any of them. His hand hovers over one, then moves to another.  And when he wants to turn his head to look at the face of the driver -- He can’t.

use your legs - the fic inspired by my tags on this post, where dean is constantly pinned throughout the show, and needs to learn a thing or two about fighting techniques.
special thanks to @dreamycas & @you-cant-spell-subtext-without for beta-ing!
Summary: Cas notices that Dean keeps getting pinned in fights. || 3k || T || getting together
If Cas doesn’t stop fidgeting with that book, Dean is going to smack it out of his hands.
The best part of a hunt is the focus that Dean feels afterwards. Adrenaline is fading, his body is tired, but he’s energized. It’s the easiest time for him to do research—as long as there are no distractions around.
His gaze narrows on the corner of Mind Over Muscle that’s found itself to be the unlucky victim of Cas’ unconscious puttering. He seems much more interested in fiddling with the pages of the book than reading it.
Simply staring at the interruption isn't solving the problem though, so Dean slides his laptop closed, leaning on the table to study Cas.
He looks thoughtful—not happy, per se, but not unhappy. He sits with purpose at the table and is content to stay there. The image of serenity he exudes, however, is marred by the stillness of his eyes. Cas is an avid reader, yet he’s not reading now.
“Talk to me,” Dean says, when there’s no immediate red flags giving away Cas’ thoughts.
“You’re a skilled fighter, Dean,” Cas remarks, continuing to pick at the pages of his book.
“Thanks...” It’s a bit of an odd compliment, given that they’ve seen each other fight countless times over the years, and especially against more difficult opponents. It’s also not enough to distract Cas from research, so Dean quirks his eyebrow and fishes for more. “What, did I set a state-record for how quickly I pinned that Djinn?”
Cas slides his gaze across the pages—ignoring his joke, the bastard—before shutting the book he was clearly only pretending to read. “From my position, it looked like the Djinn was pinning you.” Cas punctuates the response by meeting Dean’s eyes.
“‘From my position’ —piss off, Cas. It was fine.” He’s had plenty of close calls before, and this was no different. Dean gestures to his chest “You said it yourself, I’m a great fighter.”
“You are a skilled fighter, Dean,” he confirms. “Which is why I don’t understand how you inexplicably end up pinned in almost every fight you participate in.” His eyebrows are drawn together, squinting at Dean.

for the lovely @starrynightdeancas - happy birthday sophie <3
Dean comes up behind Cas as he's reading at the table and wraps him in a hug.
"Hey," he whispers in Cas's ear. "What do you think about taking a little trip?"
Cas turns around to face Dean, giving him his classic squinted look. "What do you mean a trip? A hunt?"
Dean shakes his head and smiles. "No, definitely not a hunt. Though I guess there are some ghosts in the park that we could investigate if we have some time. But, I don't think we will," Dean rambles, his smile getting wider.
Cas continues to stare at him confused. "The park? Dean, what are you talking about?"
Dean pulls over a chair next to Cas and sits down. His leg begins to bounce in excitement.
"Disneyland!" Dean exclaims, throwing his hands into the air. "I figured we could take a road trip west and hit up the happiest place on Earth. There are rides, amazing food, and all those silly mouse ears we can wear..." Dean trails off and coughs. "Y'know, for Jack."
Cas considers what Dean says and scoots his chair closer to him so they're touching knees. "Mmhm," Cas muses. "Well it sounds like it will be a lot of fun for you - I mean Jack." Cas winks as he takes one of Dean's hands in his.
"So, you're game?" Dean smiles with his eyebrows raised.
"Yes, Dean, I'm game," Cas replies, making air quotes with his free hand. "Jack needs to do some more normal kid stuff anyway. Plus, instead of watching Toy Story yet again, he can experience it in person. There's only so many times I can watch those toys cross the street in the traffic cones," Cas reflects, shaking his head.
Dean brings a hand to Cas's cheek and leans in for a kiss. "Thanks, Cas. I'm really excited for us to go," he says as he pulls away.
Cas reaches across the table to grab the laptop and opens it. "Do we buy the tickets online?"
Dean rubs the back of his neck. "Uh yes...but I kind of already got them?" He flashes Cas a nervous smile.
"You bought the tickets and planned the trip just assuming I'd agree to all this?" Cas asks as he leans back in his chair with his dom brow raised up high.
Dean shrugs innocently. "Well you did agree, didn't you?" He smirks.
"You're lucky you're cute, Dean Winchester," Cas threatens as he pulls him in for another kiss.
"I'll be even cuter in mouse ears," Dean replies.

It has come to my attention that some of you have not been made aware of the fact that Plato was well known for being a Destiel shipper, in addition to the fact that he also wrote some philosophical works on the side. Let me explain.
Plato was an Athenian thinker whose real name was Aristocles (Plato most likely comes from the Greek word for ‘broad”, he might have been so jacked that people nicknamed him for his wide shoulders, which is irrelevant to the topic at hand but I’m collecting receipts on my hypothesis that all hellers are physical beheamoths). His work regarding the philosophy of love can be interpreted through the lens of the Deancas love story, which can potentially lead us to discover the very essence of what makes Destiel so impactful and universal, so bear with me, I’ll make it as introductory as possible.
Plato’s Symposium is a dialogue which contains the philosopher’s basic view on what love can be. The influence of the aforementioned text has been so strong that even those of us who are blissfully unaware of its contents have heard of the concept of “platonic love”. It is with great disappointment that I have to inform you about the fact that the way in which the term is colloquially used can be considered quite removed from the core idea of what Plato’s love is supposed to be about. Commonly people utilize it to refer to a non-romantic and non-sexual emotion towards an individual. However, even though the extrasensory love was the end goal, it was never too far distanced from the earthly, carnal desire that was supposed to lay the foundation for greater experiences.
One of the most illustrative elements of the Symposium is no doubt the Love Ladder metaphor (also known as Diotima’s Ladder of Love, the Scala Amoris); Plato believes the act of loving to be a part of the process of initiation into the non-material world of ideas. Every step of the ladder helps one approach the transcendence of one’s soul, and so we can single out six steps to immortal absolutes:
1. The first step is developing an appreciation for a particular person. It’s a very much carnal (though not necessarily conventionally sexual) desire for beauty of a specific individual. According to Plato only through the love of the physical can one love the non material. The visceral infatuation with another’s body is often strongly rooted with the self-hatred of one’s own aesthetical poverty: within the carnal love we seek to find that which our own body lacks. The desire between Dean and Cas doesn’t have to be seen as strictly sexual, as the appreciation of beauty does not warrant a conventionally erotic subtext. This sort of fascination with the flesh is most noticeably highlighted in the many “eye sex” scenes in seasons 4-5, and is later brought up by Hester:
The very touch of you corrupts. When Castiel first laid a hand on you in Hell, he was lost.

2. The second step stems from the appreciation for all physicality derived directly from the love one has for the lover’s form. It’s fleshed out any time Dean finds beauty in the dark times, where he would have never found it before or when Cas sees humanity through the lens of the love he has for the beauty within Dean Winchester. This step is all about finding the allure in everybody, not in spite of but rather because of having fallen for a specific person’s material form.

3. The next step is a love which transcends the physical and teaches an individual to feel affection towards the souls. The attraction one can experience in relation to that which is non material is precisely what takes the function of the driving force behind both Castiel’s and Dean’s decisions in season 6 and onward (arguably even much earlier for Cas? or even Dean? Maybe we’re talking about season 4?). As evidenced by the apparent lack of attraction Dean experiences towards Jimmy himself, he must have already moved on to this stage (the Cas he loves is not just the vessel he inhabits). Castiel on the other hand feels heavily infatueted with Dean’s spiritual allure (even when he’s physically on the verge of a breakdown, he’s still beautiful, still Dean Winchester).

4. It is only then that one can find love for the institution. If one worships souls, then one also has to worship the product of those souls: and, sure enough, loving humanity led Castiel to love its structures and ethical systems and be willing to die fighting for them. In the later seasons he exhibits fascination over all the little rules that guide an average human’s life (which is especially fleshed out in his season 7 dialogues, where he contemplates all the small details of the societal structure, ie: how important is lipstick to you?, maybe the human institutions should ban its production). Same can be said of Dean: the customs and traditions of other people are subject to his affectionate protection in the later seasons, which sets s6 and onwards Dean apart from the early seasons Dean who cared mostly about his blood relatives. The found family arc was for him a process of growing attached to the order of life which was previously foreign to him, and him learning to navigate functioning within a big family structure and an organization (the last one is physically manifested by his move from a chaotic life spent at random motels to living at the bunker, property of the institution of Men Of Letters).

5. Then comes the deep appreciation of knowledge. Now, it is widely disputed whether what Plato meant should be strictly narrowed down to just one kind of knowledge (in many English translations you might encounter the word ‘science’, though used in the ancient sense). The process of gaining knowledge is often equated with the understanding of ideas in Plato’s work, therefore we’re going to stick with that. The act of loving the process of discovering both the external and the internal world is a strong factor which pushes Dean to self examination, or the examination of the inner psyche. It is that pursuit of knowledge that is the very coronation of his entire character arc: the realization of his role within the story (”I’m not the ultimate killer”) which was directly derived from the act of loving Cas.

6. The final stage of platonic love is reaching the love of the very concept of Love. Once again, interpretations vary, but for the sake of the argument, I’ll clarify that: the discussed kind of love transcends both the body and the soul. An individual is in love with Beauty, not just one of it’s physical or spiritual manifestations. In my opinion, this stage is extremely well depicted during the 15x18 confession scene, for it is a kind of love achieved by Castiel. He is no longer just in love with the body or soul of Dean, he’s also in love with the sole idea of loving him. He quite literally states that he’s fallen in love with the idea of just being, just saying it, just falling in love.

Upon achieving this state, he transcends his material conditions both by leaving the human world (his move to another dimension - the Empty - could be just an illustrative manifestation of the transcendental move of his essence) and giving birth to a new world order. The way in which he later on goes to rebuild Heaven and give birth to a completely new, structure of the universe is in line with a concept that Plato ties into the finale step of the Ladder - pregnancy of the soul. At one point in Symposium he describes Diotima saying that:
That in that life alone, when he looks at Beauty in the only way that Beauty can be seen--only then will it become possible for him to give birth not to images or virtue (Because he’s in touch with no images), but to true virtue (Because he is in touch with the true Beauty).
What is the christian equivalent and personification of the true idea of Virtue if not the abstract concept of Heaven? The moment Cas creates a new portrayal of Virtue he finishes the Ladder. It could also be argued that the true pregnancy of the soul was actually finished when Jack ascended to the status of God: an entity which belongs to the realm of ideas and is perfect by its very nature is birthed through Castiel’s love (which can be traced back to the feelings he has for Dean Winchester).
And it is the fact that Dean’s arc got stuck on the fifth stage of the Ladder that causes me so much pain. He dies before transcending and experiencing the non-temporal and non-relative feeling of love that one can gain only through the admiration of beauty itself. His life was cut short and his soul has already left the mortal, physical world, therefore he is forever unable to experience the feeling of loving Love and Virtue so much that his soul gives birth to an unbreakable idea.
In conclusion: if you ever see somebody say that Dean and Castiel’s relationship is platonic, just agree. It is very much so platonic in the sense that through their carnal and spiritual desires they’ve manged to (nearly, in Dean’s case) transcend their material conditions and reached the divine aspect of ideal Beauty and Virtue, rooted in a love that’s so deep that it’s perfectly able to redefine the structure of one’s existence.
