The death of Uther Pendragon precipitates a succession crisis in England. At Merlin’s prompting, the dying Uther names his son Arthur as his heir but the boy, his parentage unknown, is lost, actually in the guardianship of Sir Ector where Merlin placed him at birth. The theme of the missing successor is in keeping with conventions of romance, but usually in this kind of narrative heirs, lost to their realms as children, recover their kingdoms after being tested by a series of adventures and prove ideal rulers. In this episode, the romance elements of the French version [Lestoire de Merlin], good kingship that carries the approval of God and the people, are steadily undermined.

Angsty Arthurian AU Idea number ???
Reincarnation AU! Ector is raising a not-yet-remembering Arthur on his own in some off the grid small town. All alone. No Kay. Arthur had this feeling of 'something missing' his entire childhood, Ector knows who it is and has just enough of an idea what's become of Kay that it hurts a lot to think about.
They gather a bunch of local reincarnations Bedivere for sure, maybe Dinadan, Morgan, Guinevere, as Arthur is remembering and coming into his destiny. They're a small, tight knit found family scrappy low resources rebellion sort of vibe. Very fun very cool.
Now, Uther is still alive and well and running his own court/cult of personality/militant group. They and Arthur's group will come into conflict but he's also got his own agenda. Anyways one of his strongest lieutenants is Lot, who runs a powerful secret base for Uther's group, where he's "training" his sons to be Uther's perfect soldiers.
He also has Kay.
Between Lot and Uther they've made Kay into the perfect weapon against Arthur: trained since he was a baby, magic forced to it's max making him really powerful (a way to describe it i came up with comes from bedivere "The magic around him was screaming") he's supposed to be unshakably loyal. Excpt the only ones he's really loyal to are Lot's kids, to which he's become a weird sort of surrogate big brother (as much as he can). They're the only one's who treat him like a human.
Gareth absolutely hero warships Kay (though in a naive 'you're such a great knight i can't wait to serve Uther too!' kind of way that hurts Kay's soul). Anyways Kay is absolutely terrifying on the battlefield, and for a long time no one and nothing can stand in his way. Until he fights Bedivere (neither know each other's identity)
Bedivere is a solid challenge on his own, but when Kay blasts him with fire it doesn't burn Bedivere. Instead it activates some sort of magic signal bound to their souls, which protects Bedivere. Now that they know both are horror struck (for different reasons) and freeze. One of Kay's "teammates" takes a cheap shot at Bedivere, but he's warned by his team and dodges away. Making him the first to ever escape Kay.
Bedivere tells his peeps about this, which sends Ector into a dark spiral and leads Arthur to ask a lot of questions. Meanwhile, Kay is back at base and not in his armour for the first time. And he's in a cell. Gawain comes to visit, angry at Kay for freezing up, mostly because it made Lot mad. he goes on at Kay for a while before Kay finally snaps and tells him that it was Bedivere he was fighting, and on top of it the signal that save Bedi's life was one he a Kay crafted together to ensure that they couldn't hurt each other.
Which ouch. Gawain tried to apologize, but Kay's too tired for this rn and goes to sleep.
That's about as far as I've gotten linearly. Two other scenes I have in mind with Kay and Gareth-
Gareth is following Kay around while he's getting ready for a mission, mentions how he wants to be just like Kay when he grows up and Kay stops what he's doing gets down on Gareth's level and looks him in the eyes and says "Beaumains, You are going to be so much better than I ever was." (One day, in a happier world and place, where Gareth doesn't have to be anyone's soldier he remembers the first life, and he remembers this and he goes to Kay and hugs him and tells him he's still his hero)
Gareth wants very badly to go with Kay on one of his missions. So badly he teaches himself to replicate Kay's fire magic, and shows it to Kay hoping to impress him. Instead Kay freaks the fuck out and yells at him and makes him promise to never show or tell anyone about this ever again. it's the first time gareth is genuinely scared of kay. Kay hates himself for it but he can't let Lot and Uther put Gareth through the same hell that has been Kay's entire life.
idk if im feeling silly enough i might do some art for this, bc the visual of badass armoured up Kay reassuring little baby Gareth is living in my brain now

Confessions of a medievalist: I have never read Mallory’s Morte Darthur cover to cover.
So I now present to you things I didn’t realize about Morte Darthur chapter 1:
Kay was still “nourishing” and was handed off to another woman so his mother could “nourish”baby Arthur. Meaning he was not old enough to get weened. So Kay and Arthur’s age difference is smaller then the three years (as I had always assumed) and probably no more then one.
Sir Ector (Kay’s dad, Arthur’s foster dad) knew the king was giving him this baby and got a lot of rewards for it. Yet when Arthur pulled the sword he was shocked and confesses Arthur’s blood was of a higher status then he’d assumed. This leads me to believe that he thought he was Igraine’s child by her first husband and the king was just getting rid of him like he did with all of Igraine’s daughters (marrying them of and then putting the youngest in a nunnery)
Morgan is sent to a nunnery and then married off. Which seems odd to me. But I guess Uther just didn’t want to raise her until she was ready to be married off.
Oh and Uther goes and gets himself into a war two years after arthur is born. It seems to be implying that’s why he never went to go get him. Which makes sense…but I still don’t like this guy, he killed a woman’s husband to sleep with her, raped her, didn’t tell her the baby was his and left her stressing about it for a good while, sent all her children away. If Merlin’s gonna manipulate him on his deathbed to secure Arthur’s throne I am not gonna shed a tear over it.
It didn’t say Arthur was 15. It’s left quite vague. All we know is he’s older then two. Which, I sure hope so
Kay knows what the sword is the second he sees it. It’s Arthur who doesn’t. Kay immediately goes “oh I guess I’m king now” and goes to tell his dad but is completely willing to explain that Arthur found it and seems not to care that Arthur gets the crown.
Arthur swore as long as he lived he’d never let anyone but Kay be steward. Like that’s an oath he takes. Explains a lot about the Dutch tradition and why he never gets fired.
The aristocracy kept trying to delay his coronation. It’s kinda funny.

Summary of Le Morte D'Arthur by Thomas Mallory
Chapter I: How Uther Pendragon sent for the duke of Cornwall and Igraine his wife, and of their departing suddenly again. OR The Time Uther Pendragon started a war because he was horny When Uther Pendragon was king, he sent for the Duke of Cornwall to come visit him. He invited his wife, Igraine, as well because she was supposed to be hot. When they arrived, they were treated well and Uther decided that Igraine was indeed hot and wanted to sleep with her. Since she was, you know, married, she said no and then told her husband that she was pretty sure they had been invited just so the king could sleep with her. They decided to leave quickly and without telling anyone. This pissed the king off. The king’s advisors told him to summon the Duke and his wife again and if they didn’t come, then he would have a reason to declare war. He sent for them, they obviously didn’t return, and King Uther Pendragon declared war on the Duke of Cornwall, saying he would attack his biggest castle in 40 days time. The Duke decided to get two of his castles ready for war and put his wife in one while he stayed in the other. Uther attacked the castle that the Duke was in and a lot of people died. The king got such bad blue balls that it was noticeable to his knights and one of his knights, Ulfius, asked him what was up. Uther said he was so in love with Igraine that he’d gotten sick. Ulfius told him that Merlin would help him. Ulfius went off and found Merlin and Merlin said that he’d help as long as he got rewarded. Ulfius said that he was sure the king would reward him, so Merlin agreed to help.
Chapter II. How Uther Pendragon made war on the duke of Cornwall, and how by the mean of Merlin he lay by the duchess and gat Arthur OR How Uther and Merlin are the real villains here Ulfius brought Uther to Merlin. Merlin told Uther that he’d help him get laid on the condition that he get the child that he had with her. Uther agreed. Merlin told Uther to head to the other castle where Igraine was and that he would look like the Duke to everyone and his knights would look like the Duke’s knights. He said not to talk too much, but to just sleep with her and then stay in bed until he came by in the morning. After Uther left, but before he arrived at the other castle, the Duke was killed. Uther then slept with Igraine while she thought he was the Duke and impregnated her. The Merlin came by in the morning and Uther left with him. Later, Igraine learned her husband had died at the castle and started wondering who she had slept with then and mourned her now dead husband. With Ulfius as a messenger, it was arranged that Uther and Igraine get married. King Uther had King Lot marry Margawse who was Sir Gawaine’s mother. He also had King Nentres marry Elaine. They were sisters and the third sister was Morgan Le Fay who he sent to a nunnery where she became a necromancer. Later, she married King Uriens who was Sir Ewain’s father.
Chapter III: Of the birth of King Arthur and of his nurture OR Possibly the least believable bit so far Eventually it became really obvious Igraine was pregnant and Uther asked who’s kid it was. Igraine was embarrassed, but Uther said he just wanted the truth and wouldn’t judge her for it. Igraine told the story of how someone had impersonated her husband to sleep with her. Uther was like “Yeah, thanks for being truthful. That was me and Merlin told me to do it.” This apparently made Igraine happy, but I’m not sure I believe the author here. Merlin came by and claimed the kid like he said he would. Merlin gave the kid to Sir Ector, but had Sir Ector come to court for a while while Igraine was still pregnant so that Uther could see that his child would be in good hands. The king gave Sir Ector a bunch of nice stuff for raising his kid for him. When the child was born, he wrapped him in gold and then told some servants to take him to the poor man outside the castle. For some reason they actually did this and it was fine because the poor man was Merlin who then gave the kid to Sir Ector and they christened him Arthur.
Chapter IV: Of the death of King Uther Pendragon Less than two years later, Uther got sick. His enemies took advantage of his weakness and killed a bunch of his people. Merlin told him to get his ass up and to be taken to the battlefield to be there in person because that was the only way they could win. For some reason, this worked and they won. Uther lost his ability to speak three days later. Merlin said he couldn’t do anything about it because it’s God’s will, but he would make him speak tomorrow. The next morning, Merlin asked him if Arthur would be the next king and Uther replied saying that he would and then immediately died.
Chapter V. How Arthur was chosen king, and of wonders and marvels of a sword taken out of a stone by the said Arthur. Or How Arthur’s brother’s forgetfulness made Arthur king Obviously this created a power vacuum since Arthur was all of 2 and also no one knew where he was. Merlin made all of the lords and gentlemen of arms gather in London by Christmas by threatening to curse them if they didn’t show up. A bunch of religious stuff that doesn’t really matter in here, but after mass on Christmas they all go to see a giant stone with a sword stuck in it. Writing on the sword said “Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England.” Everyone was suitably amazed by this. No one was allowed to touch it until high mass was done though. After that, a bunch of people tried to remove the sword, but no one was able. The Archbishop went “Well no one here is king, but God will make him show up eventually, so we’ll just set up a guard of knights for now.” On New Year’s Day they was a tourney and everyone figured that was when he would show up. On New Year’s Day, Sir Ector showed up for the tourney with his two sons, Sir Kay and Arthur. Sir Kay had forgotten his sword and asked Arthur to go get it for him. Arthur couldn’t get the sword because no one was home, so he decided to go get the sword he’d seen stuck in a stone for his brother. All of the knights were at the tourney, so he just pulled out the sword and brought it to Sir Kay. Sir Kay recognized it and immediately went to get Sir Ector. Sir Ector also recognized it and all three of them went back to the church. Sir Ector made Sir Kay swear on the bible where he’d gotten it and he told the truth that Arthur had given it to him. Arthur told his story of how he got it. Sir Ector basically went “Welp, I guess you’re king then.” Arthur was confused and didn’t think it was a big deal that he could move the sword, so Sir Ector had him put it back and then Sir Ector tried to move it and couldn’t.

Merlin just shows up and is like “hey, raise this kid.” And is surprised when there are questions.
Sir Ector is used to Merlin’s antics, but this is a lot even for him.

The Camelot Chronicles: A New Series
This is the first excerpt from my most recent work-in-progress, the first novel in a series about Camelot, told from the female perspective. The story is told from the point of view of Lady Guinevere, a young woman from one of the most powerful families in Camelot, and Morgana, a peasant girl who lives with her mother in the woods. Together they experience the rebirth of Camelot as the new king is crowned. I've decided to share the first chapter, told from the perspective of Guinevere. Please comment and let me know your thoughts, and if you would like to hear more of this story.
-Kate
Chapter 1
Lady Guinevere sat at the back of the carriage, her eyes set on the trees that rushed past, creating a blur of green and brown. Her hands moved restlessly across the fabric of her dress, which was a shade that matched the blurring leaves of the trees she observed. Every once in a while, she picked a tree to focus on, and let her eyes travel with it for a moment. It was all she could do to fill the time, as she had already finished her needlework, the only thing that kept her from having to converse with her father. Sir Leodegrance, or Leo as his close friends called him, was a kind and merry man, but he wasn’t her mother, despite how much he tried to be. But he could not be twice the parent he already was. And she could see how much it hurt him to look at her, and smile. Guinevere, or her father’s affectionate shortening of the name, Gwen, was aware of her similarity to her late mother, and she could see the pain in Father’s eyes each time he cast his glance upon her. So, she acted cold and dismissive towards him, something her mother would never do. Perhaps the less she acted like her mother the less she would look like her, she supposed.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the carriage jolting upwards, followed by her father’s loud huff of disappointment. She glanced over for a moment and observed her father on the other side of the carriage, his brows furrowed in a rare look of discontent. His leather journal lay in his lap, a charcoal sketch of the landscape outside scarred by a stray mark of pencil, undoubtedly caused by the carriage’s upheaval. Gwen returned her eyes to the trees, and she heard the scribbling resume. She lay her head on the wooden side of the carriage, anticipating a nap. They would not reach the Forest of Sauvage for at least another afternoon.
This was the first time that Gwen had traveled to the Forest, and it would be her first time at the summer festival held there annually. It was an important event for sons of noble birth, but alas, Gwen was an only child, and a daughter, so there was never a need to attend anyways. She didn’t ask why when her father suggested they attend this year. She quietly assumed it was because he was lonely; this was their first summer without Gwen’s mother. Sir Ector was an old friend of her father’s, and she hoped their reconciliation would bring her father some happiness, or at the very least, some laughter.
The carriage jolted again, this time downwards. It slowed to a stop, the splintering of wood echoing throughout the inside of the carriage.
“Bloody hell,” Father swore under his breath. He pushed open the carriage door, his journal still in hand.
“The wheel seems to have broken, sir,” our coachman informed him. “It can’t be repaired here. We’ll have to find a woodworker nearby to fix it.”
Gwen watched as her father ruffled through his journal and pulled out a loose piece of parchment. He unfolded it carefully, revealing a handwritten map, most likely of his own creation. “We should be fairly close to Sir Ector’s lands on the outskirts of the Forest of Sauvage,” her father mused. “Perhaps he has a woodworker in his employ.”
“Should I take one of the horses and request Sir Ector’s assistance?”
“Yes, yes, do that. And hurry, if you will, there are only a few hours of daylight left!”
The carriage door swung open, and Father took his previous seat.
“What shall we discuss in the meantime, my dear Gwen?” Delete Created with Sketch.
A few hours later, after the sun had settled below the trees and Sir Ector’s carriage had made its way to and back from their disastrous spot, Gwen and her father approached Sir Ector’s humble home. It was a small castle compared to her family home, but stately nonetheless. Ivy crept up the pale walls of the castle, framing the windows with a green boundary. Outside of its strong oak doors stood several people. A tall, slightly heavyset man walked toward us with a smile on his face, drawing attention to his short dark brown beard.
“Sir Leo,” the man said.
“Sir Ector, my good fellow,” said Father.
The two men embraced. Guinevere knew little of their relationship, but she remembered that the two men had fought together in several of the late King Uther’s battles before the uprising.
“Are we the first ones here, Ector?”
“Yes, well, you’re the only ones. The eastern wing of the house suffered some damage last winter – a fallen tree.”
Ector pointed towards the damaged portion of the house, momentarily distracted. He cleared his throat and resumed walking towards the house.
“Come, meet my family.”
He gestured for us to follow him to the door. A handsome young man stood in the line of people, along with an elegant woman in a burgundy gown, and a line of servants. The man was clearly Sir Ector’s flesh and blood, a clear copy of the knight himself, just thinner and younger. And next to him stood another young man with shaggy blonde curls that slightly obscured his eyes, a color too shaded by the hair to distinguish. But there was a gleam in those eyes that Gwen couldn’t help but notice. Sir Ector gestured to the woman first, eventually taking one of her hands in his.
“My wife, Aldora. And my sons,” he gestured to the young men. “Kay,” he gestured towards the first man. “… and Arthur. ” The man with the blonde curls smiled modestly at the mention of his name.
Kay bowed his head towards them. “Welcome to our home,” Sir Ector said, standing next to his family. And almost on cue, the great wooden doors of the castle swung open with a deep creak.

Writer's Month 2022, Day 21: "Pain"/"Lost Heir"
Original fiction/Arthurian adaptation Word count: 932 Summary: Arthur and Kay, right after that whole "Sword in the Stone" incident. Author's notes: Sort-of sequel to yesterday's entry.
Kay's stared down at the sword in his hand, his mouth opening and closing like a drowning fish. His brain didn't seem to be working right. He was only vaguely aware of his father's questions or his brother's stammering attempts to reply.
"Hey! You there."
Some guards was coming. Kay looked up, blinking owlishly. The guards stopped and stared.
"Is that the sword from the stone?" the leader asked in an awed tone.
Arthur and their father stared at Kay, who stared from the guard to the sword and back again.
"Yes?" he said, his voice oddly highly.
"And you pulled it out?"
"Yes. I mean―"
Kay was still in a state of shock. He turned to Arthur, and Ector, still unsure of this whole situation, did the same. The younger boy swallowed and stepped forward.
"Please, sir―I took it out. For my brother. He needed a sword for the competition, and...um..."
He trailed, though he remained standing very straight, looking the lead guard square in the eye.
People around them were starting to stare and murmur. One of the other guards glanced around, then motioned for them to follow. "Come this way. Please."
They led them back toward the churchyard. Kay sucked in a breath when he saw the stone with the anvil on top. No sword. He looked down and was surprised to see that he was still holding it. He glanced up at Arthur, but he was walking in front of him, so Kay couldn't see his face.
There was a crowd marveling at the empty anvil, and the chatter increased as the group approached. Kay saw people staring at him. He went red when he realized―he was holding the sword, so everyone thought...but it wasn't him, it was Arthur, Arthur who had somehow...
"Stay back! Stay back!" one of the guards said as the crowd pressed closer. Another had run off, and now returned with a man dressed in very expensive clothes and jewelry. He was probably an advisor or a minor king or something ridiculously important like that.
"Please put the sword back in the anvil," this important man said to Kay.
"Put it―back?"
"Yes."
Kay looked down. There was a thin crack in the anvil. The blade slid in easily.
"Now. Try to take it out again."
Kay pulled.
It should have come out easily. But as Kay heaved, straining the muscles in his arms and chest, the sword remained as stuck as if he had been trying to uproot a massive oak. Finally he gave up, stumbling back and panting.
The man turned to Arthur. "Are you the young man who pulled it out before?"
He swallowed. "Yes, sir."
"Please try to do it again."
Arthur hesitated. He put his hands around the pommel, pursed his lips―and pulled.
Arthur was several inches shorter and quite a bit scrawnier than Kay. And yet, the sword slid out without any trouble.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Ector covered his mouth with his hand. Arthur looked pale. Kay just kept staring.
The important man exhaled. Then, quietly, he asked, "What is your name, my boy?"
"Arthur, sir. Son of―Sir Ector," he added, nodding at his father.
The man raised his hands and called to the crowd. "I present to you! The new High King, Arthur, son of King Uther Pendragon!"
"No―" Arthur began, but suddenly there was too much noise, and the man and the surrounding guards knelt before him.
Kay felt his father's hand on his arm.
"Kay. Kneel."
He stared. "To Arthur?" he asked, barely able to hear his own voice over the racket.
Sir Ector pulled him down with him, and Kay, as if lost in a dream, knelt with his father in front of his younger brother.
Arthur regarded this with a look of horror. "Father! Kay! What are you doing?!"
"Arthur," Ector said thickly, his head down. He took a deep breath. "I never lied. When I said I did not know your parentage―"
"Father, stop!"
"I never expected that it could be―Arthur." He swallowed. "My king."
"Father, stop it!" Arthur screamed, as if he didn't notice the chattering crowd or the people swarming into the churchyard or the presence of any other kneeling people. "It's too horrible, please just―get up or―"
His face scrunched up, and the fifteen-year-old king began to cry like a little boy.
Finally, Kay's brain seemed to jolt back to reality. And instantly, without even thinking about it, he jumped back to his feet and grabbed his little brother by the arms.
"Arthur! You stop it, right now!"
He heard his father cry out his name, but Kay's gaze was on Arthur, whose face immediately froze.
"You baby! Stop crying!" He snorted. "You think I want my squire bawling in front of all these people? And you're about to become a king, Arthur! A king!"
One of the guards grabbed Kay's hand in a steel grip and retched it from Arthur's arm. The brothers stumbled back from each other. For a moment Arthur looked dazed, his lip still trembling. But then he gave a little nod, biting that lip as his eyes became misty yet hard.
The next thing Kay knew, he and Sir Ector were being led in one direction, Arthur in another. He turned and looked back at him. Their gazes met for a few seconds, and then the crowd intervened between them.
Within the next hour, everyone in Londinium would be celebrating the discovery of King Uther's lost heir. But Kay had a horrible fear that he had lost his little brother in the process.

👨‍👦🙏and I don't have the emoji but what's your favorite knight =)
👨‍👦-favorite parent
It’s a tie between the lady of the lake and Ector. Like, unproblematic favs. They love their kids so much even tho they’re not blood related <3
bonus points to Pellinore, horrible to his kids but that made them interesting:))
🙏-Pick a Grail Knight
Since Percival is my favorite knight(spoilers) I’ll say Bors. He is trying his best and he didn’t sign up to be an uncle/parent to the other knights but hey, what are you gonna do? I also love his relationships with Lancelot and Lionel.
My favorite knight is Percival. He’s sooooo…….!!
seems like a popular answer but whatever he’s gender and I relate to him :)
thank you for the ask!! :)

In Le morte de Arthur, the way Arthur finds out he is adopted is so funny to me, mostly cause it’s so sad.
Like no one sits him down and explains anything, they just come out and say it when it becomes pertinent.
Arthur confused after pulling out the sword for the stone: Dad, what’s going on?
Sir Ector: oh, I’m not your dad.
Arthur: 😧
Years later after fighting a grueling civil war his mom and sister show up.
Ulfius: traitoress!
Irgaine: excuse you?
Arthur: Sir ulfius you can’t just accuse people!
Ulfius: well maybe if she had just told us she was your mom we wouldn’t have had a civil war.
Arthur: wait what?
Igraine: I didn’t even know I was his mom. Uther gave him to Merlin as soon as he was born.
Sir Ulfius: oh, so it’s Merlin’s fault then. Good to know.
Arthur: I have a Mom? 🥺
