the healing body isn’t always pretty. bandaged and bruised, it doesn’t often meet the standards of late capitalist aesthetic.
healing looks like realizing a walk on the beach is too far, panting as you tumble onto a bench; healing looks like seeing your younger self in the mirror and wishing you could hug them; healing looks like finding your inner transphobe who’s convinced you’re punishing yourself; healing looks like finally sitting up straight; healing looks like reminding yourself to put your sports bra on before your deodorant so it doesn’t stain only to remember you don’t wear those anymore; healing looks like relinquishing; relinquishing control, relinquishing linear time, relinquishing the body you had; relinquishing the idea that euphoria is a constant.
i got top surgery because the dysphoria was suffocating. witnessing myself, as i do when i see this picture or as i dance in the candle lit hues of my lounge, settle into my being is ... magical. it’s ... beyond a neat story of “the world sees me as This but i am actually This”, it’s about seeing MYSELF. this is me. that, right there in the photo topless and crouched in their underwear, is me. now that, THAT is healing.
