Cosplay and editing by me
I am terribly impatient when it comes to sewing, so I thought “I’m going to buy the base clothes and do some stuff that forces me to do slow work which really requires patience” and... I didn’t hate every second of it, but many seconds of it haha
So first of all I looked at many existing Nina cosplays and tons of fanart to see how other people interpreted the Kefta. The rule of thumb seems to be base dress + an added long-sleeved coat/Kefta and a black belt. After some trial and error I found just the combination I wanted online. Then I looked at a lot of high fashion and traditional slavic (military) clothing and decided gold embroidery, fancy trims and soutache is the way to go.
I wanted to keep the base dress relatively simple because you can’t see most of it, so I only added the gold trim to make the neckline more interesting and some wedding-dress lace for the aesthetic.
For the outer dress I really wanted to emphatise the whole heartrender thing without it getting too tacky. Enter the giant tacky heart consisting of... I think around 10 different kinds of beads I added to the back based on this heart brooch I found on etsy. The soutache hearts were more of an afterthought. Speaking of soutache: It was my first time doing something with it and turns out pinning it down was an even bigger challenge in patience than the big heart. I originally wanted to sew it all down by hand but decided even my patience challenge has limits which is why it looks a bit wonky in places but whatever.
The last big thing is the hand embroiderered leaves on the neckline. They go all around the collar and took some time to do as well.
Overall my whole plan was Red! Gold! Fancy! Feminine! and I think I definitely succeeded with that
Caption: Anyone else think Kaz was Asian at first? Then they revealed his original name and it was like oh ok so he's Wasian? Then they revealed the Netflix casting and he was white?
No, just me projecting? I remember being so happy that there was room to interpret such a badass, non-objectified character as Asian, but alas.
Photos with descriptions:
[all images are of me cosplaying as Kaz Brekker, with an outfit consisting of a loose, plain, white long sleeve shirt, a black blazer, black pants, a thin cane, a black hair tie around my right wrist, a black phone case, and black boots with a two inch dark brown heel. Here i am posing with my right hip hurting out. My left arm holds the cane and jacket in front of me. The jacket is draped over the cane, covering most of it from view. I hold the phone in front of my face with my right hand]
[here I stand mostly straight, but my weight is to the left and my right foot extends out. I'm wearing the jacket, buttoned around halfway up my torso. I held the cane with my left hand, with my index finger resting on top of it]
[I hold the phone with my left hand and cover my right hand and arm with the blazer, by draping it over my right shoulder. My right foot extends forward]
“It’s not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall, and yet there you stand.”
Nina is an extremely expressive character and I didn’t want to just stare blankly into the camera while looking pretty but transport some of that expressiveness. So have some more of my “sitting in front of a beige wall with weird shadows” series - pulling faces edition
- “ Kaz Brekker didn’t need a reason... The boy they called Dirtyhands didn’t need a reason any more than he needed permission – to break a leg, sever an alliance, or change a man’s fortunes with the turn of a card. ”
💔“Nina,” he whispered, "Little red bird. Don’t go." 💔
