Political Party Action

Political parties’ position on the education reform for 21st century learning issue.

Republican

They believe education should be more than just schooling. It should be a “whole range of activities by which families and communities transmit to a younger generation, not just knowledge and skills, but ethical and behavioral norms and traditions.” Also, they would like for students to have a good understanding of the bible and have school districts have their teaching go towards those of the business community, STEM fields, and the military, especially among our returning veterans.

“Rigid tenure systems should be replaced with a merit-based approach in order to attract the best talent to the classroom.”

Surprisingly, I agree with most of their position on education reform. They would like for the school system to fit more into the 21st century lifestyle and careers.

Democrat

Democrats believe we must have the best-educated population and workforce in the world. They believe all students should be taught to high academic standards. Schools should have adequate resources to provide programs and support to help meet the needs of every child.

They also believe education should provide a pathway to 21st century jobs, “We will invest in high-quality STEAM classes, community schools, computer science education, arts education, and expand link learning models and career pathways.”

I agree with the Democrats’ position on education reform due to the similarity in how we visualize our ideal education system, education that is fit for 21st century learning and careers.

Libertarian

While they do not have a position on the specific issue, they do have a position on education, in general, and do desire change.

“Education is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality, accountability and efficiency with more diversity of choice. Recognizing that the education of children is a parental responsibility, we would restore authority to parents to determine the education of their children, without interference from government. Parents should have control of and responsibility for all funds expended for their children’s education.”

Even though this is not the issue I am focused on, I agree with their idea to change the system to best fit the students and their families rather than going with what the government has set that goes against what some of these families and their students want from education.

Green

The Green Party views learning as a lifelong and life-affirming process to which all people should have access. They state that in their belief of learning, and openness to learning, they find the foundation of their Platform. “A great challenge facing the people of the United States is to educate ourselves to build a just, sustainable, humane and democratic future, and to become responsible and effective citizens of the local and global communities we share...Unfortunately, we often expect too little from our students, teachers and schools. We must teach our children and teenagers to be leaders, and challenge them with great works of literature, economics, philosophy, history, music, and the arts.”

I do agree with their position since they are more for change in our system that is best suited for our current time. They also want to provide more opportunities to more people

Peace and Freedom

While they did not address the specific issue, this is their stance on the issue: They believe education is critical to individual survival and civilized human values, but U.S. capitalism is dismantling public education. 

I do empathize with their general position on education since they do want education to be for the students and not for the system.

Which party position do you identify with the most? Would you vote for the Presidential candidate?

I identify with the Democrat party the most but also the Green party. I would have voted for the Presidential candidate since she would put in some effort towards the Democrats’ ideal vision of what the education system should be like.
