who in worm is the biggest music snob? and who has the most niche taste
worm's biggest music snob is probably cherie! this is a serious answer because music figures so heavily in her interlude and the way she understands her power. it's also a comedy answer because cherie is a music snob about her taste, specifically, which means: gwen stefani deep cuts. the problem with having strong, snobby opinions about gwen stefani deep cuts is that cherie is like one bad day away from slipping into a ska phase.
the most niche taste goes to faultline because i think she has the most incentive to develop it. faultline prides herself on being Good At Her Job, and one of those jobs is running a nightclub, and to do that well, you need to have good music. and while faultline naturally hires DJs, she needs to be able to vet them and make sure the music is good. consequently faultline has a very comprehensive knowledge of berlin techno and UK industrial.
runners up for niche taste are blasto and string theory because i think they are listening to some weird shit and good for them. in general if you are an off the rails tinker i think you are listening to some wild stuff in your lab, which means that bonesaw probably has the most niche taste of the characters in ward. but i have not read ward so i cannot speak to that with confidence

Asking you about your ska troll concept! They look so cool and I would love to learn more about them
@shadow-ray4 thank you for asking, genuinely was positive that no one would ask 😅😣 but I am HAPPY to share! To start here are the full refs I've done so far and explain as much of the concept as I've developed in my brain lmaooo (ALL MAJOR DEETS undercut cause its gonna be LONG)
@goldendaydna also helped with this and lowkey a concept we are semi working out since her sona Golden Tempo is an Urbano Troll (a recently named concept lol)
Tumblr media
Ska Trolls are Big, Bright, and BOLD. Together, these elements create an energetic, highly danceable, highly vibe-able troll genre. They also explode into confetti and confections when excited or surprised. Dont worry they pop back up as if nothing even happened leaving a pile of candy and crepe paper on the ground. (Ska trolls are super popular with the kids.) They practically live for the music, known for dancing for several days straight with hardly a rhyme or reason to stop.
Tumblr media
*Like even the smallest of surprises just make em POP! (Bonus Branch doodle cause why not??)
Adara, my sona, is a 4th Generation Ska Troll (her father being a 3rd Gen while her mama is a punk rock troll) so TECHNICALLY shes Ska-punk, but she still has the appearance of your standard Ska Troll so it's more a music specific.
Her great great grandparents being a reggae leaning funk troll and a rocksteady leaning funk troll who formed The Underground after being seemingly left behind along with other alt/subgenres of the main 6 kingdoms when they split. A place for alternative trolls like herself and her friends could live and PARTY HARD without micro judgments against their music. It's a haven for other trolls who feel they dont quite fit a specific genre or even one at all, but also HELLA secluded from the rest of the Trolls so they look different and SOUND different. (Cave acoustics and all) The surface likely gets trimmers and even earthquakes from their raging parties. (I'm still fleshing this out but I have this piece of "concept art")
Tumblr media
*Its literally a bioluminescent shroom town. Like glowing mushroom homes, food, ect- glow worms on the cave ceiling like stars in a night sky. All the various alternative genre of trolls have like a glowy eye thing that allows them to just see naturally in the dark too-
*these were some posters I took heavy color influence from for Adara's pallet (I know they arent all ska, but punk, reggae, and rocksteady aesthetics were an addition)
Tumblr media
Obviously I took most inspo from pinatas, party/confetti poppers, and the sorts mainly because the funk trolls poop...well. baked goods and I wanted to play off that but lean into the crazy evolution the trolls have canonically in the universe that foam at the mouth for 👀 🤲 But I wanted to make sure her colors and patterns gave off not just Funk influence, but also micro subculture influences that are within The Underground. (This including but not not limited to, how closely Ska Trolls were to the Urbano Trolls communities within The Underground)
*Exchanged tassels and stringy fur textures for more paper textures. Like literally walking, talking, breathing pinatas fr
Tumblr media
*Queen Essence I love yuuuu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are bigger than the average Funk troll and have very similar features to them, but texture and color wise are very different. They much more vibrant and staturated. Giving a mix of felt and crepe paper. They have tails as sortve as an evolutionary trait but also it gives maximum party mode as it can hold objects and act as an extra hand. Their ears are also longer and slimmer, making it harder for them to lift or perk up so they stay droopy unlike their funk counterparts. They are all naturals at brass instruments (mainly trumpet) and ALWAYS have a hop in their step.
Tumblr media
*edit if the pics keep messing up... imma have to just remake the post 😭

My Favorite Releases of the Year
I've been thinking a lot about my favorite albums of the year. This is a collection of the releases that infected my brain this year. Now, there are very good, even great, albums that didn't make the list, but I wanted to bring only what truly touched me this year.
Without further ado, the list in no particular order:
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo: In a year of many good pop albums, this one stands above the rest. The edgy lyrics manage to embody so much of what it means to be a woman in an honest way that feels authentic. It doesn't hurt that the music is catchy as hell. On "bad idea right?" the guitar, in particular, gets a moment to shine in a solo reminiscent of the Guess Who. Another track, the stripped-down "Lacy", allows a simple acoustic guitar to accompany the harmony-soaked track. Sophomore albums are never easy, but this one exceeds all expectations, and Rodrigo has carved a special place for herself.
Check Out Track: Lacy
10,000 gecs- 100 gecs: Another sophomore album that shows the band's talent was not a fluke. When the album was announced, we were treated with the song titles-- "Frog on the Floor"? "Doritos & Fritos"? What could these things possibly be? And when the album arrived, it did not disappoint with the answers to our questions. The songs range from nu-metal-inspired ("Dumbest Girl Alive") to ska-influenced ("Frog on the Floor") and beyond while continuing to push the pop boundaries with every track. Their growth is immense, and their pop sensibilities have only increased in the intervening years since their last album. At a scant 27 minutes, though, the album does leave you wanting more.
Check Out Track: Doritos & Fritos
So Much (For) Stardust- Fall Out Boy: If you've been following me for any appreciable amount of time, you'll know I have Fall Out Boy brain rot of the highest degree. But I am happy to tell you that this album is good even without the rose-tinted glasses. Stepping back into a more guitar-focused sound, the band returns to what they do best. The rocking opening track "Love From the Other Side" sets the tone for the album, with driving drums that constantly push the song forward and a taste of the grand orchestral sound they were so famous for in their first post-hiatus album, Save Rock & Roll. "The Pink Seashell", which features an Ethan Hawke speech from Reality Bites, serves as a thesis statement for the album, preaching the beauty of the everyday. This album was well worth the years-long wait, and their obvious joy when I saw them perform some of the album live this year filled me with the same jubilation.
Check Out Track: What a Time to be Alive
Freak of Nature- Heart Attack Man: This is the album on the list I have the most mixed feelings about. Initially, I must say I was disappointed in the shift into solidly pop-punk territory. I was a huge fan of their sound on Fake Blood which, while pop-punk at times, did show more of their emo influence. But Freak of Nature retains so much of what makes Hammy special- the unabashed anger of the human soul, laid bare for all to see. It took time for me to warm up to it, but songs like "C4" and "Like a Kennedy" have wormed their way into my brain. Having seen them live several times now, I can say they are refining themselves with every release and growing into a confidence that I'm sure will continue.
Check Out Track: C4
always cloudy- saturdays at your place: This EP was one of my highly anticipated releases of the year, and it lived up to all of the hype. The opening track, "Future", draws in the listener with a rough voice accompanied by strong harmonies before the song drops all vocals in favor of showing their ability to produce an amazing groove. The well-med "Tarot Cards" is a highlight, an emo track easily rivaling the greats of Modern Baseball. Every track is killer, showing the full potential of the band while furthering their sound. I do not think I am out of line saying I believe this will easily go down as a classic. You cannot look me in the eye and say that "Hospital Bed" is anything other than a classic of the genre. The band is finally heading out west early next year, and I am eager to see the EP live.
Check Out Track: future
Frame & Canvas (25th Anniversary Edition)- Braid: Is it cheating to include an album that is already a classic? Perhaps. But few remasters manage to do what the Frame & Canvas 25th Anniversary Edition has done. By now, the story of how this album came to be is well-worn, so I will not spill ink to repeat it, only to comment that we are all the better for it. This version of the album allows more space to breathe; no longer is everything muddled together in a jumble of sound. I want to highlight how well you are now able to enjoy the individual parts, such as the drums. If you haven't revisited this emo classic in a minute, this release is a sign to delve back into Braid and appreciate their sound.
Check Out Track: First Day Back
Medium Gnarly- Swiss Army Wife: Coming out just a few days into the year, this album set the tone for all emo coming out this year. The guitar work is phenomenal, the lyrics come hard and fast, and the two together simply demand your attention. Like others in this wave, the band deploys the use of screaming throughout the album to great effect, elevating the emotional level at select moments. Throughout the album, I was impressed by the restraint in the twinkle. You and I both know how vital The Twinkle is for emo music, but Swiss Army Wife earns every riff. I was recommended this album by @t---w, who shared a music video of their track "Halloween" and I was instantly taken. They're a delight who I expect to see end up on many year-end lists.
Check Out Track: CBS at 7:00
Southeast of Somewhere- Kerosene Heights: This is the most recent addition to my list. In the heat of FOMO, I decided to try Spotify in December despite my better judgment. The AI DJ dished up their track "Kathryn" for me, and instantly I was in love. When I listen to the album, I can't help but bob my head along as I yearn to hear the songs live. The songs demand to be heard loud in a sweaty bar as everyone screams along to the lyrics.
Check Out Track: Kathryn
Why Would I Watch- Hot Mulligan: Any follow-up to the much beloved you'll be fine was going to find itself under a spotlight, but the band managed to deliver another album of heartbreaking bangers. Much as before, their guitar work is sublime, and the lyrics demand to be memorized and poured over again and again. I had the pleasure of seeing the full album performed live, and I can confidently say they've grown so much from even when I saw them last year. Why Would I Watch is proof they were not a flash in the pan and easily cements the band as a leader in the much discussed fifth wave scene. I do wonder what comes next for the band. Is this the set sound? Will they branch out on the next release? Only time will tell, and I will be first in line to hear what they have in store.
Check Out Track: Gans Media Retro Games
Miracle- Equipment: Now, why am I putting an EP on this list when the same band released a full-length LP this year? Great question. To begin with, this EP is perfect to me. Not a single note or lyric was misplaced. Four perfect tunes that I listened to on repeat for months. I think I might actually have the opening of "Talk to Strangers" tattooed on my brain by this point. Meanwhile, I am still digesting the album, carefully picking it apart. I guess this makes it over its younger brother simply because it's tight. Not that the album is bad, but the EP is just that good.

I’ll always share my Spotify wrapped because I think it’s neat as hell to see what everyone listened to this year. I didn’t get L to the OG to the top like I wanted, my commitment to the bit waned unfortunately.
2023 my music listening habits were very different than they normally are, I spent less time keeping up with new releases and wayyy more time exploring artists and genres that I previously hadn’t really listened to.
That being said there were still a few projects from this year that I really loved that I figured I’d take the time to write a little about now.
5. Actual Life 3 Piano EP (January 1-September 9,2022)- Fred again..
Really inspiring EP for me, it’s a quiet reflective audio journal featuring some ambient sounds, some really cool samples, and some pretty piano playing throughout it’s a lot more lowkey than his album last year but I really enjoy that.
Favorite track: Nathan (Varner Road)
4. Quaranta by Danny Brown.
While I really enjoyed Danny’s work with JPEGMafia this year, I ultimately prefer this solo release from him this year. It’s a follow up to his album XXX, on that album Danny was a 30 year old struggling to make it as a rapper, now a decade later he’s obtained the success he once wanted so badly and he finds himself reflecting on where he was and where he is now. While financially Danny is better off than he was a decade ago, mentally he is still hurting and struggling as much as he was then. It’s a raw and vulnerable album with some excellent production throughout and some of the best verses of Danny’s career in my opinion.
Favorite Track: Down Wit It
3. Census Designated by Jane Remover
On Census Designated Jane Remover moves away from the hyperpop and digicore influences of her last album and leans more into rock and shoegaze, although there a certainly still a ton of fun little glitchy and stuttering effects throughout. If you like Ethel Cain I’d highly recommend this album.
Favorite Track: Cage Girl/ Camgirl
2. Wallsocket by underscores
A really wonderful pop rock concept album filled to the brim with infectious hooks, creative sampling and a lot of fun vocal manipulation throughout. There are no skips on this thing, every song is bursting with this really great creative energy. There are only few songs that I fell in love with this year more than You don’t know who I am.
Favorite track: You don’t know who I am.
1. 10,000 gecs by 100 gecs
The second I hit play on this album and I heard the THX logo sound followed by gunshots and the sick main riff on Dumbest Girl Alive, I knew this was going to be my favorite album of the year.
Here the gecs expand on their sound from the first album, refining it and fine tuning it, while still maintaining the playful energy that made the first album so exciting. Every song on the album has at least one or two lines that have permanently burrowed their way into my brain like the best ear worms do.
This album really flexes the duos skills at genre blending as they take from nu-metal, rap, pop, rock and ska and fuse them all into this wild album. It’s an unpredictable and fun listen one second they’ll be singing about struggling to make it in Hollywood, and little later you’ll get a song about having a tooth removed.
There’s a playful rebelliousness to all of their songs that I just can’t get enough of.
Favorite track: Dumbest Girl Alive (duh it’s my most listened to song this year) but I also wanna shoutout Most Wanted Person in The United States, that song fucking rules.
What’d you like this year?

tagged by @itshighjuniper to share 5 songs i've been listening to recently!! thank you juni ^u^ i am not including songs that are on the playlist that plays at my work (which I have been listening to ad nauseam but not by choice) or songs from the OSTs of stuff, just because those would probably dominate the list (that said, some of the OSTs I've been listening to lately: Across the Spider-Verse, Revue Starlight, Gatchaman Crowds, fanmade g witch covers). anyways!!
- PRESSURE BOMB 2!!!! by Jhariah: have been listening to a LOT of jhariah lately, super super cool style and I always always always love narrative albums. this song in particular just makes my brain happy and also, like, vibrate aggressively. it's nice!!!! other favorites include ENTER: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR OWN DEATH (the opening track off the album A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO FAKING YOUR OWN DEATH), Promises, Needed A Change of Pace, and Flight of the Crows
- Riptide by the Scary Jokes: been a fan of the scary jokes for a whiiiile now, and this has been one of the songs from their newest album that i've been listening to the most (other two favorites from the album probably being Forever In You and Rage). Burn, Pygmalion!!! is still an all timer to me tbh (MEANWHILE ON THE ROOF JEANNIE CONSIDERS THE VASTNESS OF THE COUNTRYSIDE THE DARKNESS OF THE MOUNTAINS-) but I am also enjoying RB and bonus points the cassette looks SICK AS HELL
- Love Me Dead by Ludo: introduced to by way of a podcast and thoroughly wormed its way deep into my brain along with Tick Tick Boom by The Hives, Electric Version by The New Pronographers, and Picture, Picture by Harvey Danger. anywhays, god DAMN that chorus kicks ass. also, the video is pretty fun!!
- Venus Ambassador by Bryan Scary: song that I actually found ages ago and only recently checked out the rest of the album for- it's really good!! i think there's a narrative going on here even if I havent quite figured it out in its entirety but in the meantime gosh the music is good and the vibes are exquisite. other favorites off Flight of the Knife include La Madame on the Moon, Mama Waits, and Son of Stab
- A Better Place, A Better Time by Streetlight Manifesto: Streetlight Manifesto singlehandedly made my opinion of ska as a genre do a 180. one day while cleaning/organizing stuff in my room I decided to listen to, like, almost if not all of their discography, and this one was my favorite. made me cry the first time I listened to it!! anyways, my personal recommendation is to do what I did and listen to the entire Streetlight Manifesto discography just fuxking do it
anyways, tagging @theclairewitch @plaintivemeow @lvnarsapphic @sg-x00-airgetlam @destructix (absolutely no pressure tho yall lol) and, like, anyone who sees this and wants an excuse to do one of these!!

Thank you @oliverferrie for the tag!
Rules: Assign a song that fits the vibe of your OC.
As I've done at least one other time, I will be doing characters from my WIP Masterpiece. I'm also using this as an opportunity to add actual lines from my WIP concerning these characters, so please enjoy!
Dr. Vladimir Hayes
Dr. Hayes stared at him, barely blinking, almost as if he was reading something written in Glen’s eyes. It was the depth that Dr. Hayes saw that terrified him and left him feeling exposed and somehow weaker for it. Over two centuries’ worth of immortality and power, washed away with a single glare and the psychiatrist didn’t even seem interested in what he was seeing.

While he isn't very religious, I do think that God, If You Are Above by Falling In Reverse captures the sense of regret Vlad has for not being able to help his supernatural patients more.
POSSIBLE FLASH WARNING FOR THIS VIDEO LINK

In case Spotify is your thing;
Ska
The leader of a group of a demon family that takes a strange liking to Glen, seemingly out of nowhere, after he stops a fight between the vampire and his nephew. Powerful, terrifying, and anxiety inducing, Ska inserts himself into Glen's life in a desperate attempt to help him after Glen returns from a mission to the Simiri Clan a different and broken vampire. I had a hard time thinking of a song that really makes me think of him, but since he has a way of making people anxious I figured maybe The Worms Crawl In by Harley Poe was an okay fit for now.
Glen looked him over, his navy eyes hesitating over his face before looking away. The demon’s face was white, its features too rounded, too perfect, too still. Below the jaw, the rest of the demon’s body was shadowy but solid. Long black streaks of hair moved unnaturally along their head, slithering over their face and eyes. It was the eyes that had caused Glen to look away. It wasn’t their crimson color that had disturbed him, it was how deep they were. Below the face, deep set, alive and wet under a frozen shell.

Glen
The stupid sexy vampire of our story that returns from a mission at the Simiri Clan a broken and disturbed version of himself. Now that his own kindred is terrified of him and what he is capable of, Glen has to try to recover some sense of sanity and rebuild his friendships as the different person he returned as.
Glen could imagine it. Mama would walk in and her eyes would widen when she saw him. He would reach for her, like he always did when he was in trouble or hurt, only for her to flinch away. Who are you?! What have you become?! And he would deserve it. Even mothers can only love their sons so much.

Hell Above by Pierce the Veil reminds me of what's going on inside his head.

Thank you for reading! I think since Glen is such a silly guy it's easy for others to forget that Masterpiece is a very dark story. So I'm sorry if these songs come as a shock to anyone who has followed me outside of my prompt responses (which are dark but much less so)
No pressure tags: @doublegoblin and @veetvoojagigthemagnificent
Please let me know if any of you all would like to be added to tag lists for future tag games or my WIP! :)

[ID: The hardcover Junji Ito collection, Shiver. The main image on the front page is the head of a pretty girl, apparently just her head, with her neck turning into a stringy tail like a balloon, though the tail twists into a noose. Half-hidden under her hair is the round face of a frowning boy absolutely covered in pimples, and hanging from the stringy tail of that head is a fat boy with the same face. On her other side is the face of a young man, riddled with so many holes that most of his teeth are visible and his right eyeball is falling down through his cheek. The stringy tail of his neck is hanging the body of a young man riddled with holes. Twisting around these three heads is something that looks like a worm or caterpillar but, if you look close, appears to be many wrinkled heads nested inside each other. In the background are three more head-balloons. One is of a wildly cackling woman with blank white eyes, wide red lips, sharp teeth, and wild green hair, dangling the body of the same woman in a pink dress. Another head is so distorted that it almost doesn't look human, with the neck long and twisted, the nose flattened, the eyes bulging, and the brain apparently bursting out of the skull. The third is a wide, smooth face with smiling red lips, where the neck doesn't turn into one string but several, making the face look like a jellyfish or octopus. End ID.]
Ohhhh, this one definitely has a lot of the outright grosser Ito stories--the one about cooking oil, in particular, I've read before and had to skip right past. One I hadn't read before, though, was the one about a ska record made after the singer died, that everyone who listens to becomes obsessed with (it's Junji Ito, of course the source of horror is obsession), leading to a chain of murders as people fight each other over the chance to own and listen to the record. The idea of a song recorded when the singer's dead body was lying in the studio is some REAL good old-timey creepypasta shit, and it's kinda hilarious to me that a driving problem of the story is that almost nobody has a record player anymore, so all the characters' efforts to find somewhere to listen to the record just wind up exposing more people to the song from beyond the grave...

Girl I wonder if you’ve come across this gem yet
Tumblr media
Hehehe.
Mfer was like “you know I was in a ska band called The Worms” and the interviewer was like, “Strangely enough, I guessed all of that by the hair cut”

Im really tired from doing the animatic so have this really fast little mouse sketch thing of the kids but they’re like 5 years older plus some funny headcanons cause everyones doing it so I can too :)
Feel free to suggest some things
Info under the cut:
Becky:
Her teeth get slightly sharper the older she gets
Violet does her hair and makes her a bunch of silly little headbands to wear
Wordgirl and Huggypants outfits have also updated a little bit
Very into obscure shit but also a giant cartoon nerd (specifically my little pony and winx club)
Gets new powers and still needs to get used to them
Has a lot of plasters/bandages from her fights, most of them with funny little themes
2nd smallest of the kids, right after Tobey
Violet:
Covered in paint or glitter most of the time
Started to collect rocks with googly eyes and named them all after random stuff, also owns a lot of worms-on-strings and sillybandz
Her hair clips and earrings are selfmade and always look out of place
Helped Becky and Huggy design their new outfits, almost had a crisis as these two have no idea what fashion is
Definitly into Anime (Specifically Slife of life and Magical girls) and really girly shows
Scoops:
Has a single dyed hair strand that hes very proud of
Gets dragged into liking really obscure shit like Mothman but unlike Becky, he gets like way into it with theories and once dragged his friends into the woods to find bigfoot
Wears Retainers by night
Always wears this really baggy jacket and a tie because he thinks its cool
Likes music like Ska and Polka, basically his entire music taste turned into Weird Al and ocassionally western
Takes Pictures of literally everything and carries a giant backpack with him at all times
Tobey:
Wears Braces and really hates them
Still has his weird little nerdy boy outfit but wears giant jackets or lab coats just to make it clear to anyone that he is in fact, a nerd
Found out about Becky being Wordgirl and had an entire crisis about it, keeps it a secret and still has his crush but doesnt like to admit it. Also doesnt destroy the city that often (but still wants to like half of the time) and hangs around with the gang, mostly just because Becky wants to keep an eye on him
Got really into rpg games and just dungeon and dragons kind of stuff
Has a lot of bruises and scars especially on his hands from his work
Actually Professor Tubing’s apprentice, still gets a little bit over his head
Currently in a Weirdcore/Glitchcore-music phase
TJ:
Has a Wordgirl Varsity Jacket that he got from Becky and never takes it off, its also way too big for him
Still a giant fan of Wordgirl and while he doesnt know that Becky is in fact Wordgirl, he has his suspicions
A very good Baseball player and does collect baseball cards with Johnson, both of them also collect pokemon cards and got really into the games
Johnson:
Still constantly hanging around TJ
Wears this cool Wordgirlfanclub Hoodie that TJ gave him, theres only 2 existing and TJ owns the other one
The taller one of the two but still a stick
Listens to video game music and got into very old Cartoon shows
Constantly carries a backpack around and no one really knows what inside, probably just some snacks
Victoria:
Still wants to be the best just to please her parents
Actually has freckles but covers her entire face in makeup
Managed to become the most popular girl in school but the only person that every hangs around her is Aileen
Theatre kid and plays in the school band just for her own funsies
Makes make up videos for YouTube and just acts really posh but is actually really into heavy metal and conspiracy theories (she basically overheard scoops talking and while at first thinking it was stupid, she got really into it)
Just exhausted all of the time from trying to act perfect, wants to go apeshit just this once
Eileen:
Victoria is her only friend and she constantly gets to model for her make up videos
Wears a lot of different princess clothes and jsut overall a lot of frilly and pink, also likes tiaras and glittery bows
Still talks baby talk and it annoys everyone around her but she wont stop, just because she choses to
As tall as Becky and a bit chubby, doesnt just have freckles on her face but also shoulders and arms
