Visual Effects in Only Friends MV part 2

The second song on the Only Friends OST dropped today; So What? by the amazing Ford Arun. Much like the first MV for Only Friends, this one is also has visual frameworks that made me stop and stare.

Just like my first post on this subject, where I talked about the late 90s/early 00s aesthetic of the show as well as controlled voyeurism (aka we only see what they want us to see), these themes show up again here, but a little differently. Unlike the Let's Try MV and the BTS vids which use multiple different effects and transitions as well as framing a lot of the scenes to look like (possibly) 90s camcorder footage, So What? has two visual effects (I think technically three, and I'll point out why I say it this way in a minute).

The first one is the camcorder footage effect. Except that it's even different from the Let's Try MV. While the Let's Try MV has the "play" prompt onscreen and time stamps, it now, to me, feels more like CCTV video than camcorder video. The video effect on So What? is definitely camcorder footage because it is time and date stamped.

Now, the time and date stamp is February 1st, 2020 at 6:06pm for every screen it appears on, which to me cannot be an accurate date/time for any of the scenes. Several of these scenes were from episodes 4, 5, 6, or potentially yet to air. Chuem drops info about Covid in episode one and in February of 2020, we were so early into the pandemic during that time that I'm not sure she would have referred to it so casually, plus with no Covid precautions being taken onscreen it does feel the show is set currently (aka 2023).

Why this date? Why 6:06pm? WHAT IS JOJO TRYING TO SAY HERE? Is this a specific reference to something upcoming on the show? Is this date famous in Thailand for something? Did he just pull a date and time out of a hat?

Onto the second effect: the yellow text on the screen is back! It was heavily used as a visual effect in episode one, and after a discussion with @ignoranaxed I did add it to my Narrative Frameworks post where I'm tracking visual effects on the show. We discussed whether or not this was an homage or reference to SKAM Norway, an extremely popular coming of age teen drama that had an amazingly done queer season (Season three. If nothing else, stop what you're doing and go watch SKAM Norway season three. You can thank me later). The show was so popular it has been remade in Spain, Italy, France, Germany (named Druck), Belgium (named WtFock), the United States and has even been announced as a Korean (BL?) drama for next year.

Is this an actual homage? I came down on the side of maybe. I can't swear it is, but I can't say it isn't. That yellow text on the screen is iconic due to SKAM Norway, and it is used in every single remake of the show (if Korea doesn't use it, I will cry. Also, if Korea doesn't release/air it in the same way, I will cry). Leaving that aside, the yellow text is in Thai, and as yet, I have no idea what it says because my subs only translated the song lyrics, not the onscreen words. If anyone who knows Thai can help me with this, I would love you forever because there's one other thing that shows up in yellow on the screen, and it's this:

WHY AN ELLIPSES, JOJO? WHAT DID IT SAY BEFORE THIS? I NEED TO KNOW WHY IT'S TRAILING OFF. IS IT TO BE CONTINUED? THE NOT KNOWING WILL DRIVE ME INSANE.

Onto the third , but maybe not really an effect: Is Ford photoshopped in here?

I ask this because if he is (and I can't quite tell but I think maybe?) then does that mean this is future footage coming up on the show? Or, like Let's Try MV did with it's extra SandRay footage in the car, was this just shot for the MV? I'm curious to see what people think on this.

Now for the rest of the MV where I just melt down because WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS DRAMA BETWEEN YO AND PLUG, JOJO? YOU CAN'T DO THIS. Also, is this Sand hugging Yo?

You can't do this to my girl. This will hurt.

Do we think this is Boston and Nick potentially going ice skating or roller skating? Because if it's roller skating, JOJO I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER.

In summary, the visual frameworks are back in play once again and what they're choosing to show and how feel important.

If you had to how would you rank the skams wlw couple? With mayla season 6 (let’s forget about s9)

1. Kieutou

This is me being incredibly biased, but watching Fatous season live did something to my brain, because as long I can remember there's never been a black main character like her on german TV, and that's why I'll defend Fatous season with everything. Also I loved how Kieu My and Fatou talked about being children of immigrants and how they related to eachother about that topic. And I loved that it wasn't a season about coming out, but that in s5 and 6 at least, everyone was casually gay and it was no big deal and they could talk openly about it. Additionally, even though the general audience may have not liked it, i absolutely lived for how the season was catered to non-white people, and our struggles, and for that druck s6 will always be the best skamverse season for me.And also, the symbolism. I lived for all the symbolism regarding Kieu My being the ice queen and the axolotl, and Fatou the warmest person ever, and how they complemented each other. And lastly for now, Kieu My climbed on a fucking roof for Fatou, alone for that they'll be always my top 1 skamverse couple

2. Anobbie

I don't think I've ever seen a skamverse couple in general having such great communication, and I don't think there's a skma season where a couple is already together early in the season and staying together and growing together throughout the clips and episodes and learning more about each other. And just like Fatou and Kieu My, Anais and Bobbie really complement eachother and I love that. And I also love how Anais season is lowkey Fatous season from Kieu Mys perspective and I also love how there are so many parallels between those two seasons. I also love how Bobbie tries to help Anais to stand up for herself, and just how much she cares for her, and also how much they can't get enough of eachother, they're just really cute so far

3. Mayla

First of all, Lola really went through it in her season, I don't remember everything from s6, but her suffering is what I remember because there was so much, I love how cute Lola and Maya were together and honestly I just watched skam france for them, I didn't even watch the other seasons, which shows just how popular they were as couple

4. Crisana

I've actually never watched Skam España before, but I've seen edits of crisana, and I know their season was iconic because it was a wlw of an isak season. Honestly they're really cute, but I need to watch the season to make a better judgement

Lovely @caromitpunkt tagged me to list 9 of my favourite shows in no particular order.

Now, I haven't watched a show in a loooong time, so let's see if I can think of nine shows in general 😅

1. The Simpsons: ultimate comfort show. I watch reruns in TV when I'm at my parents. I think I've seen every episode (till season 20) about ten times each.

2. IT Crowd: another comfort show. It makes me laugh every. Single. Time.

FIRE, exclamation mark, FIRE, exclamation mark, HELP ME, exclamation mark. 123 Carrendon Road. Looking forward to hearing from you. All the best, Maurice Moss.

ICONIC.

3. Black Books: look, I have a lot of comfort shows that I keep watching over and over, don't judge me. And Bernard doing his tax returns lives in my head rent free.

4. Monty Python's Flying Circus: this show has shaped my sense of humour. Either you find Monty Python's humour funny or you can't be helped. I'm happy I'm in the first groups. I remember way too many quotes from the show instead of important things. But I don't care.

The. Larch.

5. Derry Girls: one of newer shows that have the comfort show potential. I haven't watched the last season yet. But hey, as a fan of Take That, I LOVED the episode when they went to the show.

6. Skam: I think this is the only show that I binge watched. I don't do binge watching because of my attention span and there's always something that has to be done and you can't spend the whole evening, night and morning watching a TV show, but Skam (and Druck) did it.

7. Gilmore Girls: the older I get, the more annoying I find both Lorelei and Rory and I wish I could forget the clusterfuck that was Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. But this show was a too big part of my life to not mention it. (And Rory jumping with Logan from that scaffolding with umbrellas? Poetic cinema.)

8. Doctor Who: I haven't watched all episodes, it is a show I keep telling myself "when you have the time, you'll catch up with the rest of the episodes" but it's hard to find the time with a full time job, a life AND multiple hours of cycling to watch every day 😅 I find some of the companions annoying (cough Amy cough), but the comedic genius duo that was David Tennant and Catherine Tate is iconic.

Don't blink.

9. Mistresses: (the UK version PLEASE) look, I'm gay. And there's Sarah Parish and Orla Brady in this show. There are few moments that make me want to climb the walls (in a good way). Too many 'we shouldn't be doing this' that I enjoy way too much. Another sort of comfort show. Did I mention Sarah Parish is in this? 😍

Omg I keep seeing you post about slam Italia and now I really????? want to watch it???? Where is it w English subs?

hiiii!!! the trailer of the new season came out so that's why I was posting a lot about it!! I'm so happy to catch your attention cause it's one of my favorite shows (my icon is actually a character from that show)

so, I don't know if you are familiar with the skam concept but I can still explain it quickly. if you were watching it in real time it has a clip concept where throughout the week short clips are released and at the end of the week they make up an episode. each season focuses on a single character and their pov. the original skam show was the Norwegian one and it ran between 2015-2017. then came the European remakes (there a lot of them but my faves are skam Italia and the German one which is named Druck) and sometimes remakes put a new spin, or at least add more details. the new season of skamit is actually an original season not a remake.

skam italia is really great because I think its director/writer is amazing. and I think they really managed to flesh out their characters more. every interaction feels super real. I love the characters a lot, they truly feel like a group of friends and basically it's one of my comfort shows. season 2 with Marti and Nicco is a masterpiece. their love, Marti's struggles really touched me.

now to your question, you can watch it with English subtitles on this site called "All of Skam" I added the link but you can basically Google it too. All the remakes are there including Skam Italia. That's where I watched the past season too!

when you last posted about it i decided to rewatch all 4 seasons of skam (which i haven’t watched since 2017) and wow…. this show was so good my obsession has been reignited thank you 🙏🙏

OMG REALLY.....ICONIC OF YOU,, i dont think ive done a full rewatch of the og in years like i got so wrapped up in druck + wtfock that i never went back but i really should because god its sooooo good. i love finding forms of media that im able to get super involved with which is how i ended up loving dsmp but like skam was perfect because i could translate texts and keep up with the characters on ig and wait for the clips to drop like it was such a unique presentation at the time i miss it

omg i picked up skam (og) again bcs i was bored and i’m really getting into it all over again jejdjdjdj btw which ver is ur favorite (s) and why ?

i feel like i can't say that one version of skam holistically is my favorite. it's more like it depends on what i'm valuing. most people's obsession with the og peaked with evak. like you really had to be there in 2016 watching each update drop bc it was all over tumblr. noorhelm was popular in its own right and then there were the iconic scenes of the girls walking to the party or willhelm and his gang walking into school that went viral during their season but i don't think most people actually liked willhelm and frankly neither did i (albeit og noora was adorable and i love her!). the sana season was frustrating but sana and youssef had insaaaane chemistry, so i still really cherish that along with the evak season

other than that, skam italia and wtfock do noorhelm best (esp italia. i could write essays on incantava. i have written essays lmao i was absolutely obsessed with every facet of their season) but i don't particularly care for any of their other seasons or content (albeit i do have a soft spot for sobbe in wtfock). druck is probably the best overall adaptation but i only really care for amira/mohammed and spiderwitz. skam espana does vilda/magnus best but with the rest of the ships i only enjoy the initial development before ultimately losing interest bc they insert weird plot twists. skam nl aesthetically is gorgeous and has one of the best depictions of the central girl group, but that's about it. i don't even register skam france. and skam austin is too weird to process in my head bc i live in texasgjdfhklgdfg
