GPose Guide: Dark-skinned characters

I got some questions about how to work with dark-skinned characters - and also heard some comments on how hard it is to gpose them. So here's a compilation of use cases, some techniques, and setups!

Posing in dark settings

This is where dark-skinned characters shine, pun intended. Point lights give a lot of flexibility, and character/environment lights are great tools to give volume and detach characters from the background.

In this example, 3-point sources are used to provide volume to the characters, without relying on character brightness at all. The Neneko Nikuman preset gives excellent brightness, contrast, and depth of field (DoF) options.

Posing in bright settings

Contrast is a powerful tool, and dark-skinned (and dark-clad) characters can use that to their great advantage.

In the following example, a hard white light is positioned to create a strong rim light for volume, with a support gold source for tone and a light purple point to bring up the character's face. The Neneko Cocktail preset gives rich metal tones and excellent contrast.

The second example is about color. The same preset (Neneko Cocktail) is used, with ADOF+BOKEH and ADOF+BLUR enabled to give a dreamy quality to the background. Light sources emulate the sky.

Colorful/Pastel clothing/scenario

You may have heard that dark-skinned characters don't go well with certain colors, like pink or white. That is not true: Dark skin palettes have as much width as pale ones, just in a different range - and light sources can bring them up.

The first example uses a very colorful background, with Neneko Lux driving the hue and brightness up. Instead of fighting it, we use the scenario colors to our advantage by projecting them around the character.

The second example is a portrait where we again use the scenario to provide hints about the light sources. Neneko Melonpan gives an excellent, smooth pastel treatment. Let's see the step-by-step from the original state to the final result.

The first light is placed to emulate a cyan reflection from the water. The second emulates the bluish reflection from the sky, and The third is pretty near and creates a sunny rim light.

With everything in place, we can enable the preset - and play around with DoF to decide how much we want to detach it from the scenario, taking away attention from the background and popping the character.

 Posing together with fair-skinned characters

We can borrow some practices from real-life photography. The most important: position your light sources around the dark-skinned character. This will give you enough contrast to play with, and lessen the amount that reaches the other.

Composition (Extreme)

Compositions with lots of glow elements make it hard to pop the character features: since armor and weapons don't emit real light, everything needs to be compensated with the three-point lights, plus character and manual scene brightness.

In this case, the character is positioned in such a way as to hide frontal reflections while still bringing his expression out a bit with well-defined rim lights.

Comment: The default in-game lighting leaves much to be desired

This is certainly true to an extent. The in-game settings are apparently tuned towards a common denominator between wildly different form factors (i.e. PC, Playstation 3-5), so a muted palette is used.

This results in ashen colors and small gradient differences between dark tones in certain situations; keep that in mind if you're looking for locations. Again, lighting can be used to remediate - but not eliminate - these limitations.

Final Thoughts

This isn't, by any means, a comprehensive guide. Dark-skinned characters come in a glorious amount of shades and tones, so I tried to keep it simple and discuss some basic aspects.

Cinamun.. I gotta know.. what shaders are you using? cus they make ur sims look so good and I got a lot of Sims that are more on the olive to darker shades and some presents making them look so bright.

Hey friend!! You know, I've got a wild little secret. I still use Gshade but I'm using presets from the before times when I was still using reshade 3.08! I converted them over to gshade and, aside from a few newer presets they are what I play with the most. I have tweaked and tweaked so my presets are pretty much set at this point lol.

There are certainly presets that whitewash Black and Brown sims. Your best bet is to play around with the settings and tweak them to your desire. You might find that unchecking clarity or some of the blooms might bring that Brown skin back. I will play around with a preset forever until the melanin pops!

BUGGIN-0UT CAS CRASH COURSE!

I have zero video editing/ recording knowledge so i had to settle for this, hopefully its still helpful.

When I use references, I rarely aim to make the Sim look exactly like the actual person. Instead I tend to select my favorite parts or features from each picture. Sometimes I don't use references at all, and people's features just pop into my head. Either way, my Sims are inspired by real people 95% of the time.

PRESETS

I loosely picked presets that were Similar to the reference I was using. I specifically liked the shape of her features and the fullness of her face, so that's what I focused on. Btw, I never aim to make it look exactly like the reference. I learned years ago that trying to make a perfect match is impossible unless you're using a face mask and As a perfectionist, it only sets you up for disappointment.

SIZING THE FEATURES

I think we all notice how cartoonish vanilla sims are so to make my sims look more "realistic" I do not make the features any bigger than the default size and I usually size the eyes down 1-3 bits, average being around 2. For the rest of the features I try to balance it out so that they're all cohesive.

SKIN

When selecting a skin tone, I usually click around randomly or aim for something similar to the reference. In this case, I chose a tone randomly and adjusted it using the color slider.

For this Sim, I desired a fuller, more plump face, so I searched for a skin that went with that look. Now, here are my most important tips! As you can see, this skin is an "Asian skin” but I'm not aiming to make this Sim Asian, I just chose it because it lacks cheek shadows. Skin details are important to my Sim making process and I cannot stress this enough! I plan to show the difference it makes by creating two different Sims using the same base at the end.

SKIN DETAILS

When it comes to skin details, I always use the Faaeish cheek and eye details. I've been using them for years and they significantly enhance my Sim creations. I use a variety of skin detail overlays, especially those that include skintones, because they offer more texture and definition. However, many overlays don't align well with the base game skin tones and I generally prefer non-overlay skins because overlay skins often have grey undertones for black skins. For this reason, I recommend using the color slider mod.

MINI COLOR SLIDER TUTORIAL

Here's an example of how I use color sliders to match my skin details. It helps if you're already familiar with color, hue, tone, etc., but it's not difficult if you're not. The swatch here is the closest match I could get in terms of color, so I'll use saturation, opacity, and brightness to achieve a closer match. 1) If it appears too orange, adjust the brightness and/or opacity. 2) Darkening the brightness helped, but it still looks too orange. 3 & 4) I reduced the opacity to slightly less than halfway, and it worked.

TWEAKING SOME STUFF

I adjusted the nose and lips to align with the fullness of the face. Remember when I mentioned cohesiveness earlier? Well, I'm going to dive into that a bit more right now. I chose a softer nose overlay to appear less defined and more rounded because a sharply defined nose on a full face wouldn't be as harmonious (although it can still work and look beautiful for sure). I added a lip overlay for fullness for the same reason. I then tweaked the face to ensure all features were facing neutrally (straight across, not up or down turned) to maintain consistency, because what???? cohesiveness blah blah blah!

MAKEUP

Time for the fun part! I also use makeup skin details, which are superr helpful with giving my Sims distinct looks. This is how I can use the same base skin for almost all my Sims and still make them look unique. For eyeshadow, I use eyelid overlays and adjust the color using the color sliders, following the same method as before :). In the images, you can see the difference between using no makeup skin details and using them. You can also see the difference in lipstick before and after using the color slider. OH! I also included heterochromia, inspired by one of the references!

EYES

I always reduce the size of the eyes and go for ones with less shine to achieve a more "realistic" look. Since these were the only Heterochromia eyes I had, and they leaned towards the cartoonish side, I made them very small and raised them a little to appear less round and more oval-shaped. I also adjusted the brightness to darken the eyes, creating more shadow for the sclera, which I feel like enhances the realism…Then ofc I make them a lil cockeyed, cause whats a buggin-0ut sim if the eyes dont look like they tryna see each other.

SKIN BLENDING

This is a new method I've been using to add texture to my Sims. I utilize the color slider mod to blend skin overlays, non-overlays, and facemasks. For this Sim, I chose the Tems skin by ClaikSims, mainly because she fine BUT !, it was a good choice because the spacious eyelids matched up perfectly. When doing this step, I recommend not setting the opacity too low, it can make the skin see through, which makes double nipples, eyebrows, belly buttons, etc. If this does happen, I honestly just use the body and cleavage masks by Sims4Melancholic.

DO WHATEVER YOU WANT!

The final step! I revisit my references and see what else I can include, such as their hair, makeup style, aesthetic, and so on.

I didn't change anything except the makeup. I just wanted to show an example of how much it can change a Sim, regardless of the skin used.

And that's my CAS process! Nothing too crazy…i think???. I've been doing the same routine since 2018, minus the sliders ig.

A long post about Castaway stories

I wanted to play Sims the other day, but I'm already tired of the usual Sims, like the Sims Medieval. And I remembered the existence of Sims Stories.

This game turned out to be so pleasant and bright for a cold and cloudy winter! It's so warm!

But in order to play it fully, like in Sims 2, you need to set it up first. And it's not that everything is difficult, but I suffered.

1.To begin with, as in the case of Sims 2 - Graphic Rules Maker

In the drop-down menu, select Castaway or find it manually.

In general, the setup is similar to Sims 2 and there are many guides on this topic, but I want to clarify that if you are going to use the reshade, then you need to check the box next to the "Disable Dirty Rectangle".

2.Then, as in the case of Sims 2, you need to patch the game to avoid crashes.

3.I haven't checked if the RPC launcher works for this part. But if you don't have it, then here are the instructions for installing the ReShade.

4.Next, install mods and cc.

Just like in Sims 2, create a "Downloads" folder in the documents.

And don't be like me - don't forget to enable this option. I've broken my whole head why only floors and CAS items work, but buy mode and hacks don't…

On the MTS website, it is recommended not to install mods until you complete the main plot, otherwise it may break. I haven't experimented with this, but cc for CAS and for buy mode don't break the game.

5. My must have list of mods:

1)Garden Crop and Ultimate Fruit Collection - An absolute musthave, because in any survival there should be gardening as a constant source of food. I moved all the plants to the "general" section in the simpe, which corresponds to the "Nature" section. Otherwise, they will simply have nowhere to appear.

2) Woodworking bench - That was the first thing I thought about when I started playing this game. It works great, but! Do not try to make a guitar, a violin and a shelf, otherwise the table will freeze. I cut out all these functions from my desk and put it in the "Survival" section (corresponds to the "Sitting-rest" section), which I advise you, otherwise it will appear in the mirrors by default.

3)A workaround for the broken MoveObjects cheat - Required for the previous mod.

how did you make such a clean and well-lit gifs of erenville without messing up his skin stone? im struggling to make edits of him because of this

hiiiii. i actually don't know if i can explain this without mentioning shit that might seem like obvious thing to do/common sense when it comes to it. but my process for making gifs has always been just using presets and shaders that don't look too overbearing.

admittedly, a lot of presets fail to actually make any dark-skinned character look good in certain lightings. erenville is one such examples because not only is his skin dark, the greyish tone on it sometimes appear brighter on different cutscenes due to weather, time and day etc. and it's not like in gpose where we can use the in-game camera settings and spotlights to adjust those.

the game is really washed out, i'll say this much. but there's at least a lot of presets that can retain skin tones and at the same time make scenes look vibrant without causing eye strain. the one i used is pretty much a custom preset at this point with how much of it i've changed, but maya purple cocoon (now candleblooms) has a lot of dark-skin friendly presets that you can look into and fiddle with as you like. i've used their presets as a base a lot. this is me assuming that you use reshade though, but if you don't, only third party programs like photoshop or photoscape can help.

if something is too bright/dark, fiddle with every setting. try seeing if adding or subtracing more shader will help you out. for me, i don't worry much about the brightness so long as the skin tone is true because most of the brightening and exposure increase that i do is done on photoshop. i don't really do much when i'm in the process of making gifs. just slapping some brightness and contrast, exposure tinkering and some levels if i want to mute certain colors and such

Tw: Yandere stuff, killing, time loops, feelings of general insanity, stalking and harassment, delusions, gaslighting?, bugging, mentions of skinning, incel vibes radiating off of spy.

Congaher brothers: Zed and Maynard love their younger brother, so of course when they’re told to get close enough with you they do so willingly. Though they aren’t expecting to get attached themselves. They genuinely approve of their brothers choice and make a point to try and hint at him. They fight for your attention a LOT. Which is difficult to get considering their predicament. But they gotta act fast because they know when Dell is gonna need you. Its gonna have to take some convincing from Maynard because Zed is too childish and whiny about you refusing to go. Maynard suggests that the ‘attraction’ they run is owned by their brother and you should go. They feel bad when they have to kill you and go on. They feel really bad, especially because what they were told to do was to make sure your conscious only was ran through the respawn. They however, refuse because it’s ducking rude Dell should have you only to himself. Becomes sort of a Persephone situation.

Dell: Dell can’t find himself getting mad at his brothers for getting attached, though this does mean he makes targeted alterations to the timeline. Some key to getting you near him. You’ve seen him in ‘dreams’ from what he can gather. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t pleased with the look of fear on your face, as collected as he is he can’t deny himself that satisfaction. You talk to him more through ‘dreams’ and he’s proud that he’s been able to make you laugh on more than one occasion. He knows what he can do to get you through the respawn machine but here… here he can build a solid connection with you without infringing on his brothers time to build a platonic bond. He’s proud to have strategized this, and he knows when y’all get together, for eternity that you’ll thank him.

Medic: Medic himself is not amused with the situation he finds himself in. A person deciding to follow him around after he’s done with his job, en route constantly asking him about his day. But as he notices more, as the loop continues he noticed you more. He noticed how you’d always smile with brilliance. How you always remarked him so happily, even though he felt he didn’t deserve it. And what would happen if he just decided to- keep you? To keep tapes, to keep mementos. He’d get this violent itch, to wear your skin against his. To dance with you in the night but in the end, when your image flashed across his eyes he couldn’t. He couldn’t even fathom why he would do that. Or think that even. It’s creepy to you when at the same time a man who looks like your perfect stranger wreaks havoc on your streets, a flash appears outside your window. Something bright blue, almost neon. Then you hear on the news that your stranger was found dead.

Soldier: He’s an idiot when it comes to love but never to passion. He notices the familiarity you have. Rinse and repeat he can count on you giving him the order of the most eventful day of his life. He doesn’t know that of course. He keeps a small picture he was able to convince you to take with him. He keeps it in a band under his helmet. He loves the way you do everything, and he counts on you to make his morning more livable. He, having served in the Second World War just wants that stagnant comfort. You remind him of everything good. And that’s why he gets the exact same thing you recommended the first time he can to you. Coffee black, with one cream. Sausage Gravy and flaky biscuits, with fried chickens, and fruit. He memorizes it, and he carrys your voice like an anthem. (Going as far as to hide a Walkie-Talkie talkie in your house so he can tell what you’re doing when you get home.) he’s most calm when he can hear you breathe.

Spy: Jacques believed he was entitled to you before he even started working with Jane. He’d always seen you walking and constantly tried to woo you to no avail. He eventually decided he’d become very pissy with you when not offered sufficent attention. He’d become very very outspoken about his rejection, going so far as to track you til you threatened to tell the police. Not caring he’d advance till he managed to find where you lived. If you tried to change the place you’d stay it would only put you closer to him. And he liked it that way. Until he didn’t, until you started to feel off as well. The same song and dance skipped over and repeated and then where it ended it would start again. You’d change a tactic and he would ensure your day was hell until the day rewound.

Would you mind sharing your preset? (private of course!!) or share which shaders you've downloded and have enabled? I've been trying for so long to achieve such a look as you have for your gameplay. It's not too bright or vibrant, doesn't change the sims' skin colours too much and still has warm, earthy vibes. Again, you don't have to, I completely understand. Great advice on the reshade and skin stones. Back when I was new to reshade I didn’t understand how to edit. I would ask my friend to make me one or I would make my sims skin stones darker.

No doubt! This goes for gshade too, friends (since that's what I use). The first things I check if it seems too bright is vibrance, tonemap and any blooms that are checked. I either uncheck them completely, or adjust their settings.
