Space Ghost Coast to Coast #35: “Gallagher” | July 25, 1997 | S04E02
Who knew that by the time we got to this episode, Gallagher would be dead, and that these guys would be famous, and that BOB is MORE FAMOUS than DAVID? WHAAA??? It’s important to note that this episode being titled Gallagher is probably a jab at comedian Gallagher, perhaps based on a discarded idea or just the mere connection of them all being comedians. It’s a subtle jab and it’s rooted in irony, but in 1997 it still probably qualified as “punching up”. Bob and David probably weren’t getting THAT rich off of Mr. Show, and Gallagher’s popularity was an unwelcome blight on anyone with a taste in comedy.
There may have been a time when this was one of my favorite episodes of the show, and it was ONLY because it featured Bob and David of “Bob and David” fame. Now I can confidently say that this actually is a better-than-average episode of Space Ghost. Bob and David are effortlessly funny, and carry the episode to a certain extent, but there are so many pure, sublime Space Ghost moments. Like, for example, when Space Ghost asks Bob or David a question and Zorak thinks Space Ghost is posing it to him. When Space Ghost corrects Zorak that he’s asking his guests the question, Zorak angrily demands “Well, quit lookin' at me!”. While Bob and David answer the question, Space Ghost continues glaring at Zorak. That’s just like, the perfect Space Ghost joke, right there. So simple, so dumb, so funny.
The thing that Bob and David bring to the table is not just being hilarious improvisers, but also they genuinely want to play along with the episode, shaping it significantly. Bob pretends to get addicted to Space Ghost’s laser, and really sells the action of being hit with it. I recall on the commentary that the writers really loved when the guests would take the initiative to do stuff like that.
I would be remiss if I didn’t tell this story, for some reason. I remember a fellow forum poster absolutely got under my skin once because they posted a thread titled something like “does anyone else here think David Cross isn’t very funny?” and the examples that he cited were his two appearances in the Men in Black movies and this episode of Space Ghost. It infuriated me that this guy judged David Cross on such a meager sampling of his work without viewing what I felt were his “main” works: any of his stand-up or Mr. Show.
I was also incensed that anyone could find David unfunny, which… look, I ran a little hot back then. I still love the guy, for some reason, but can get why he’s not for everyone. I was probably extremely pompous about the fact that I liked him and was supposedly right about liking him. But when I challenged this guy on whether or not he’d seen Mr. Show he shot back with “I don’t watch puppet shows”. This retort, which I THINK was meant to be funny? It baffled me and my friends so much that we, to this day, will reference that guy’s screen name if we are all watching something together and a puppet appears.
One time we found him on twitter and I think we referenced his anti-puppet take to him and he was completely confused by it. Just one dumb dashed-off post has come to define his entire being for us. I guess the only comparable feeling I have to being on the other end of that is there was one guy in high school who would constantly reference the fact that I used to dub porns for people, and that was his only reference point for who I was. I was so much more than that. I also dubbed South Park episodes.

the red wolf
chapter three: the lion and the rose
oberyn martell x fem!reader
warnings: death, choking, brief mention of vomit… basically anything from the purple wedding in s04e02 applies really
words: 3.1K
excerpt: A warm hand laid itself on your waist, and you cast superstitious glances around you before turning to meet Oberyn’s gaze. He smiled down at you, moving close to stand behind you, chest not quite touching your back.
“She is magnificent, isn’t she?” he murmured, voice close to your ear. “I have seen performers such as these during my time in Essos. They create art with their bodies alone. Wouldn’t you agree?”
You nodded, at a loss for the right words as the woman moved herself into a new shape. His hand had moved from your waist to the relatively safety of holding your arm.
a/n: sorry for the wait lovelies!! i hope its worth it; though definitely a plot propelling chapter i tried to pack in as much loveliness between oberyn and reader as possible! following the second half of the canon episode s04e02

The floor of the sept glittered with the early afternoon light. A band played a traditional tune, the high notes filling the still air. Sun beams cascaded through the strategically placed windows, highlighting the architecture and some of the faces among the crowd.
Oberyn’s face stood out to you from across the room, the sharp chisel of his jawline and the contrast of his dark hair against the golden skin. He caught your gaze, and a heat rose in your face as you realized you’d been staring, but he sent you a soft smile, the corner of his lips rising.
A hush fell over the crowd, all heads turning as the massive doors opened with a low groan. Margaery Tyrell stood on the other side, framed in light, looking like one of the Gods themselves. She began her slow procession across the sept on the arm of her father, allowing ample time for all of the court’s esteemed guests to take her in. The new Queen. You supposed she couldn’t be worse than Cersei.
Her hair, copper tinted but not red as Sansa’s was, sat piled atop her head in intricate arrangements. Her gown trailed behind her as if an extension of her body, and her rouged lips turned upwards in a demure but expressive smile as she approached where King Joffrey waited for her. His smile, in contrast, was downright predatory.
You hoped she knew what she was doing.
“Let it be known that Margaery of House Tyrell and Joffrey of the Houses Lannister and Baratheon are one heart, one flesh, one soul. Cursed be he who would seek to tear them asunder.”
The High Septon’s voice rang out across the sept, strong and clear. Your own throat felt dry, and you suppressed a feeling of nausea as Margaery, in all her beauty, sealed her marriage to Joffrey with a kiss.
It’s not Sansa. It’s not Sansa. It’s not Sansa.
And it’s not you.
He found you at the reception, also held in the gardens. As improbable as it seemed, they were done up even more elaborate than they had been for breakfast. Performers had been brought in for the evening events, and you slowly weaved your way through them, happy for the distractions.
You’d settled your attention on a contortionist. You had never seen anything like it. Her body twisting in seemingly impossible ways, curves of her skin stretching over bone, and you felt your skin heat as you saw her breasts pushed up against the platform as she brought her legs up and over her head.
A warm hand laid itself on your waist, and you cast superstitious glances around you before turning to meet Oberyn’s gaze.
“No date for the wedding, Prince Oberyn?” you asked, a teasing edge to your voice. He raised a dark brow at you, bringing his goblet to his lips before answering.
“Alas, I would usually have my paramour Ellaria on my arm for these events.” His eyes searched yours intently. “She was feeling ill, so I insisted she stay behind in Dorne, where the sun could contribute to her good health.”
You nodded, bringing your hand up slowly to cover his. You traced over his fingers lightly, just to feel the warmth of him.
“Ellaria … she is the mother of your youngest daughters, yes?”
“That’s correct,” he replied. He seemed to hesitate, uncharacteristically, over his next words. “Does that … bother you? That I am with her?”
Your brows knit together in confusion. You thought back to your kiss, in the gardens, how he had surged into your touch. You had wanted it, by the Gods, and you would give anything to be able to kiss him like that every day you both breathed.
But it didn’t matter what you wanted.
“No,” you answered, honestly. “But … why would it matter if it did?”
His mouth opened, unsure for the first time you’d seen, and before he could respond, the aides called for everyone to take their seats.
He insisted you sit with him during the meal; leading you with a firm but kind hand on your elbow to a seat on the edge of the empty performer’s space. You tried your best to relax into the evening, keeping your mind from dwelling on who the bride and groom were, enjoying the food and entertainment and company. Especially the company, Oberyn’s warm body anchored beside you, an assuring presence in such an unfriendly space.
Even still, you couldn’t stop your eyes from wandering to the head table often, watching Sansa, her hair elaborately braided in the southern style, sitting stiffly in her seat next to Tyrion. It was a small consolation that Tyrion somehow managed to look even more uncomfortable, drinking deeply from his wine cup.
Your spine stiffened when Cersei and her father wandered past your table. You locked eyes with the shrewd older man, and your spine stiffened, and with a sharp pang to your chest, you felt Oberyn’s hand pull away from where it had lain casually atop your thigh. You understood why, of course you did, but it stung all the same. Tywin’s gaze didn’t miss much of anything.
“Lady Stark, Prince Oberyn,” he greeted, stopping his daughter with a hand on her elbow. Cersei’s expression was sour, though you were sure she thought she was masking it with a tight lipped smile. It seemed she was powerless against her father’s will, as she too stopped by your table.
“Your Grace,” Oberyn threw back, still appearing at ease next to you. “Lord Tywin. Are you enjoying the festivities?”
“Indeed,” Tywin answered. His eyes slide again over you, locking on your face. You met his gaze, determined not to drop it, echoes of your conversation in his office sounding in your head. “I was not expecting the two of you to be table mates — but, I suppose, it does make a modicum of sense; two outsiders of King’s Landing.”
Even though he was clearly speaking with Oberyn, he never looked away from you.
Were you my daughter, I would’ve had you married long ago…
Oberyn didn’t dwell on his observations, changing the conversation with a whip of his tongue. “I expect it is a relief, Lady Cersei, giving up your regal responsibilities. Wearing the crown for so many years must have left your neck a bit crooked.”
The corner of Cersei’s mouth twitched, her head tilting minutely. Each one of you knew it was a thinly veiled insult, and your breath became harder to capture.
“I suppose you’ll never know, Prince Oberyn,” she shot back deftly. “It’s a shame your older brother couldn’t attend the wedding.” You thought her eyes flitted to you, for only a moment, at the mention of his brother. But you couldn’t be sure.
“Please give him our regards,” Tywin cut in. “With any luck, the gout will abate with time and he will be able to walk again.”
You will be wed to my eldest son, Jaime, once I convince him to quit this Kingsguard business.
Did Cersei know Tywin’s plans? You had not even the faintest clue. If she did, she didn’t show you any sign.
“They call it the rich man’s disease,” Oberyn’s tone was light, teasing, despite the subject. “A wonder you don’t have it.” Your hand bunched uncomfortably in the fabric of your skirts, the other reaching for your cup, to take a deep drink of the wine within.
“Noblemen in my part of the country don’t enjoy the same lifestyle as our counterparts in Dorne.”
Oberyn leaned forward now, closer to you, though still not daring to touch you so blatantly in front of them. You relished in the heat you felt emanating from him, trying to comfort yourself in it. You didn’t want to be here, but there was nowhere to run to. A low fire had begun burning in Oberyn’s dark eyes.
You will bear him sons, and they will be the heirs to both Winterfell and Casterly Rock.
“People everywhere have their differences. In some places, the highborn frown upon those of low birth. In other places, the rape and murder of women and children is considered distasteful. What a fortunate thing for you, former Queen Regent, that your daughter Myrcella has been sent to live in the latter sort of place.”
The muscles in Cersei’s neck jumped at the mention of her daughter; you thanked all the Gods, old and new, when her son stood and tapped his goblet, effectively cutting off any rebuttal that was to be had. As he began to speak, Cersei and Tywin finally drifted away from your table.
“Are you alright, little wolf?” Oberyn asked you, low enough for you only to hear. You furrowed your brow when you looked at him, eyes unable to focus any one place on his face.
“Are you?”
“—is history!” Joffrey’s voice rang out among the gardens, too loud to be ignored. “The time has come for all of us to contemplate our history. My lords … my ladies …”
A large and decorated lion’s head was rolling in left on the edge of the floor. As a servant pulled down a heavy lever, its mouth opened, a brilliant red carpet rolling down from it.
“I give you. King Joffrey … Renly, Stannis, Robb Stark, Balon Greyjoy. The War of the Five Kings!”
Your breath was stuck in your throat. The beating of your heart was pulsing in your fingertips, loud and quick, and you felt surely you would die right here and now, as five dwarves ran from the lion’s mouth. Your vision blurred upon seeing the one riding a toy wolf, adorned in a fur coat.
“Don’t watch,” Oberyn whispered to you. His hand was back on you now, clutching your own on your leg, warm and steady pressure that pulled you back from the brink you could feel yourself rapidly approaching. His opposite hand came up, despite the potentially large audience, and pushed your face, gently, firmly, away from the direction of the performing floor. You followed his urging, and your eyes met his — you tried to beg him, silently, please take me away from here, though you both knew he couldn’t at this moment. “Look at me, little wolf. Only me.”
And so you did, eyes soaking in the planes of his face, his jawline — wrought with tension now — the creases of his forehead above where his thick eyebrows had drawn in close to one another. You took a deep breath, possibly your first in minutes, and turned your hand upwards, lacing his fingers in yours. You didn’t care if Tywin Lannister himself saw it.
The voices of the dwarf performers continued behind your gaze, woven in with laughter rising from the crowd. Joffrey’s laughter rose above others, loud and brash and vile inducing. You wanted so desperately to bury your head into Oberyn’s chest where the skin was exposed, soothe yourself against his heart.
“Your head!”
Your eyes squeezed shut.
You did not open them again until you finally heard rounds of cheering from the crowd around you. With a shaky breath, you turned your head back to the head table. Sansa sat there stock still, and a pang of guilt shot through you at the sight of her. Joffrey’s face was sneered in laughter as he addressed the performers, lined up in a row in front of him now.
“Well fought, well fought. Here you are, champion’s purse. Though you’re not a true champion yet, are you? A true champion defeats all the challengers. Surely there are others out there who still dare to challenge my reign.” He turned his body towards Tyrion and Sansa, at the far end of the table. “Uncle! How about you? I’m sure they have a spare costume.”
You were struck, not for the first time, by just how cruel he was. A knife to stab in the hearts of you, Sansa, and his own uncle, in one foul swoop. The latter man stood, face impassive despite the insults.
“One taste of combat was enough for me, your Grace. I would like to keep what remains of my face. I think you should fight him. This was but a poor imitation of your own bravery on the field of battle. I speak as a first hand witness. Climb down from the high table with your new Valyrian sword and show everyone how a true king wins his throne. Be careful, though.” He gestured now to one of the dwarves. “This one is clearly mad with lust. It would be a tragedy for the king to lose his virtue hours before his wedding night.”
The atmosphere had shifted monumentally in just a short period of time. Everyone sat in trepidation, as Joffrey’s face filled with rage. You thought back to that night, during what was now known as the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Your hand, stroking soothingly up and down Sansa’s back. Your lips, tainted from the bitter wine Cersei had given you, that you didn’t have the will to reject in the sheer terror of a possible siege. Cersei’s whispered orders to guards, demanding they bring Joffrey down to where you sat, with the women and children. Tyrion wasn’t wrong, and they both knew that.
Joffrey walked over to where his uncle had now taken his seat again; pouring out the wine in his cup over his head without hesitation.
Tyrion sat still, letting it wash over his face. “A fine vintage. Shame that it spilled.”
“It did not spill,” the King spat. Oberyn’s hand tightened around yours, both of you watching the spectacle.
Margaery, quiet up to his point, reached her arm out to her new husband, a practiced smile on her face. “My love, come back to me. It’s time for my father’s toast.”
Joffrey obliged her, moving towards his seat, but kept a sneer directed at Tyrion. “Well, how does he expect me to toast without wine? Uncle, you can be my cup-bearer seeing as you’re too cowardly to fight.”
Tyrion still refused to rise to the taunting. “Your Grace does me a great honour.”
Joffrey’s face, impossibly, twisted in anger even further. “It’s not meant as an honour.”
You turned to look at Oberyn, not wanting to watch the debacle another second. His eyes were turned towards the head table, narrowed, and an anger broiled within them you hadn’t seen in the short time you’d know the man.
“He’s right,” you whispered, as loudly as you dared. For a moment you weren’t sure Oberyn had even heard you, but his eyes moved to yours a moment later, the anger dissipating somewhat when they did. “I was here when Stannis attacked the city. Joffrey intended to hide from him, like a coward.”
It was impossible for you to read Oberyn’s expression. “Little wolf, this is not the place to say such things.”
Your attention was drawn from him when the crowd suddenly applauded again. A pie was being carried in, and clearly everyone in the gardens was desperate to break the seething tension between Joffrey and Tyrion that threatened to spill over into something larger and bloodier.
Thankfully for all those present, Joffrey turned his attention towards his pie and his wife, gleefully stabbing at it with his sword, releasing a slew of doves from inside. The atmosphere that had threatened to choke you lightened with every piece of pie that was served amongst the crowd. Slowly, you released Oberyn’s hand, sending him an uneasy smile.
“We can see our favourite gardens after the meal,” Oberyn said. His voice was easy and even now, his expression light and normal, as you’d become used to. “If you’d like.”
You smiled again, more genuine this time, nodding at him. “That would be lovely. I’m not inclined to stay for a much longer duration.”
“He’s choking!”
The cry of the new Queen sounded out over the gardens. Your head whipped back towards the table, where surely enough the King was coughing and sputtering on his pigeon pie, beginning to stagger towards the crowd. Cersei and Jaime each surged forward, panic stricken. Joffrey vomited onto the ground.
“Help him! Someone help him!” Cersei cried out, cradling Joffrey into her lap as he fell towards the ground, unable to hold up his own weight. You couldn’t help but stand, some dawning horror pulling you closer to where the King of the Seven Kingdoms continued to sputter and choke in his mother’s lap. Your hand flew to your mouth as you saw his face, grotesquely purple, his eyes bulging. Oberyn was at your back, nearly pressing against you, decorum all but forgotten.
A sudden thought came to you to find Sansa, and you whipped your head to where she’d sat, but there was no longer anyone there. Nor was she wasn’t standing in the crowd that gathered around Joffrey. She wasn’t anywhere.
Your eyes began to burn as you lurched backwards, feet moving to run, find her, but a strong arm clamped around you, gentle but firm enough to hold you into place.
“The last thing you want to do right now is run from here, little wolf,” Oberyn’s voice was in your ear, closer than it had ever been, his warm breath washing over your skin. “Please.”
You knew he was right, but you didn’t care, couldn’t care; Sansa had run. You needed to find her. You pushed against him desperately, uselessly, as he held you there, and you felt the burn of your tears blaze down your cheeks. For once, you let them fall, head spinning in terror and confusion. Your knees buckled, and Oberyn held you up, and you clung to him with your free hand, grabbing tightly into the arm wrapped around the front of you.
His warmth was the only thing that made sense to you, as you looked on through tear blurred vision at the dead body of the King.

Summary:
Shara Carlino took one look at Emily and when she felt threatened, somehow aimed right at the core of her insecurities.
"You've never been in love, have you?"
(Coda to 4x02)
Read here on AO3, or under the readmore!
"You've never been in love, have you?"
Emily nursed her wine glass, sipping from it when she could pull herself out of her thoughts long enough to not just toy with the stem. No matter what she did, it seemed she couldn't focus on anything else. She didn't make a habit of letting weirdos get into her head. By all means, this should have been innocuous, a statement shrugged off the minute she and Dave left Shara Carlino's office. It stayed with her though. She forgot about it just long enough to be done with the case, but as soon as Hotch and Morgan disappeared into one SUV while Spencer took the wheel of the one the rest of them were going to take to get to the airfield; as soon as Dave put on his seatbelt, sharing the backseat with her, it came back. It slammed her in the face when he tilted his head and silently asked if she was okay, the same way he did whenever she got in her head too much. He looked at her with the same warmth he always did, and images of him, still sleep-faced and bed-haired in the morning, had her itching to reach out for his hand. She'd resisted the urge. She'd nodded. Spencer had started the car and that was that.
Only it wasn't, or else why was she here and why couldn't she get shit-faced and make herself get past this odd funk? Those words stuck to her skin like an uncomfortable, scratchy suit.
"Thought I might find you here."
Emily smiled despite herself; he did that too, made her smile at the strangest times, when joy was the last thing on her mind. She watched Dave get into the stool next to her, shrugging his jacket and draping it over the back of his seat before signalling the bartender.
"A scotch, neat, please," he said, then turned to her. "Are you going to tell me?"
"Tell you?" Emily tried to play coy; she could always attempt an escape, a diversion. She could, but she didn't really feel like it. Especially as Dave raised an eyebrow at her, obviously unimpressed by her acting skills, and then gently pushed some of her hair behind her ear.
"You don't fool me, Emily Prentiss," he whispered, exasperated yet fond, and again, what a mix. From anyone else she would feel patronised. The same words and gestures from anyone other than this grotesque, loving, passionate ass of a man would get her hackles raised. Instead, she sighed, and he squinted at her. "Come on, out with it."
"What are we doing, Dave?" She asked, unsure what route to take this. They had carefully avoided this conversation thus far. Stayed up late chatting about any and everything but that, had sex that they never would call making love, yet looked and felt a lot like it, kissed, like they would find all the answers if only they pressed closer. "That woman," she added when he looked confused, and maybe even worried. "What she said to me…"
"She was a serial killer's groupie, Emily—"
"I know. I know, it's just…"
"Just what?" He sat sideways in his seat, and caught her hand, kept her from ruining her cuticles any further.
"She was wrong?" She said it like it was a question, her tone rising more out of nerves than anything — her heart in her throat, she waited.
"Of course she was wrong. I mean, you're a grown woman; you've been in love at some point in your life. Anyone not wacky-into serial murderers could tell you that." He smiled still, like he was amused, and Emily laughed a little hysterically — he'd misunderstood her.
"Dave," she shook her head, "You're not hearing me."
"I'm not?" Still, he looked confused, and by God, it was true, men were too dumb to read between the lines, or right through them apparently. He watched her as she laughed, like he wanted in on the joke, and she felt like punching him but she also needed to take this off her chest, stop making a secret of something so obvious.
"God," she sighed again, rubbing her face with her free hand.
"Oh, we're calling him so soon?"
"Shush," she said, and then sat the same way he did, so their knees fit together, nested. She turned her hand in his and squeezed, then leaned closer, watching his expression morph as he slowly caught on. She kissed him, the way she did when she wanted to cut some of his most rambly ventings off, when she needed his attention and he just wasn't giving it, when she wanted his focus on her and her only. Then she drew back; her face felt warm. She brushed her nose against his and repeated herself, "She was wrong."
That she hid her face in his neck next might be a little pathetic, but this she hadn't felt this naked in a long time, hadn't made herself this vulnerable to another person in decades. A large hand cradling the back of her head was exactly what she needed to start relaxing again though. That, and the gentle way he kissed her temple.
"Can I see your face again?" He whispered, and he sounded just that side of choked-up that let Emily feel it was safe enough to straighten up. His thumbs brushed just under her eyes, then moved to the line of her nose, until he traced her lips with one of them and let his other hand drop back in his lap. He opened his mouth, but kissed her again rather than talk. "Let's get out of here, get some air."
They did get some air. They walked down the street, and the next, and when Emily indicated her car was the other way around, they walked back. Dave grabbed her hand but he didn't talk. She didn't either, unsure if this was the moment where she was meant to freak out he hadn't said it back, so to speak, or if she could afford to stay calm a while longer.
Turns out, it would have been too bad if she'd missed the next of Dave's moves — why did he always have such good ones — where he pushed her back against her car, and his hand warmed the side of her neck as he once again claimed her mouth, slotting their legs together.
"You are the most exasperating, anxious, nerdy, sweet woman I have ever met, Emily," he fired while she caught her breath. "And it turns out, I am quite fond of all of that."
"Quite fond?" She asked, and wondered if this was it, the moment where she punched him.
"I love you, too."
There was no punching. Instead Emily let out an embarrassing little squeak, and her face flamed up again. She was nodding, over and over and she couldn't stop it anymore than she could stop the way her heart jumped and her stomach flipped. It was ridiculous.
Dave grinned at her "I have for a minute now."
"Oh yeah?" Emily asked, unsure if she wanted to know exactly, or if she needed something to hold on. An attitude perhaps; he shook his head though. Never fooled.
"Come on, let's get home," he brushed his fingers down her arm. "Maybe we can even find a Barry Manilow concert on the… the tube thing."
That made her laugh, pulled her off the brink. "It's called Youtube, and careful what you wish for. Might not be a concert but I'm sure I could find whole albums on there."
"Lord, help me," Dave laughed. He stole another kiss then went around the car, letting her drive her own car for once. It made Emily's lips tug into yet another ghost of a smile. She slid into the driver's seat and try as she might, keeping her eyes on the road was tougher than she'd thought.
"Where is home?" She asked, as though that wasn't a loaded question.
"It's wherever you want, Em."

Winds of Change (Redux)

by Lady_Aran
A remastered version of my fic, "Winds of Change"
She sat submerged in one of two large, carved stone baths within the walls of Harrenhal's bathhouse. It was the first time in a long while she had been able to enjoy a proper bath and considered the simple act but a small victory, for only the gods knew what it had taken for her to get this far in her tumultuous journey to return the nefarious Kingslayer to his family in King's Landing; only the gods knew of the prices that had been paid in order to get here...
Brienne could still hear her terrified screams that night in the woods; could still feel and smell the hot, putrid breath of the men ghost across her face as they struggled to claim her while she fought tooth and nail to deny them of their prize...
She stopped scrubbing for a moment, her eyes falling closed and skin prickling with a rash of gooseflesh. I can still hear his screams, as well...
The bloody screams of the Kingslayer.

Timestamp #TW33: Rendition
Torchwood: Rendition (1 episode, s04e02, 2011)
Airborne chemistry and conspiracies abound!
The Torchwood team is escorted to Heathrow. Rex takes the vortex manipulator and dismisses Rhys and Anwen before forcefully loading the team on a waiting plane. The CIA is involved as well since both the United States and Britain are asking a lot of questions about the rendition. Rex takes a trip to the lavatory where he considers his near-death experience while swallowing an aspirin.
Gwen and Jack catch up on their lives since the 456 incident. Rex asks Jack about the vortex manipulator while being hostile toward the team. Jack asks about morphic fields, explaining the basics of it to Rex. He also makes fun of Rex by telling him that the vortex manipulator is reporting low sodium levels. Rex calls Dr. Vera Juarez, who verifies the diagnosis, and then snacks on a bag of pretzels.
At the CIA, Esther gets word that Torchwood is being brought to the United States and she asks supervisor Brian Friedkin about working on the case. Esther returns to the floor while Friedkin consults with agent Lyn Peterfield on the plane via text message. Through a mysterious box, he consults someone about the morphic fields. The response: “Remove”.
Oswald Danes prepares himself for a television interview by raiding the craft services table. He muses about his future and how he’s more of a prisoner now that he’s free. During the interview, Danes dodges the interviewer’s questions, but is stunned when confronted by a photograph of his 12-year-old victim. In a sobbing fit, he says that he’s sorry for what he did and apologizes for the person that he is. The production assistant apologizes for her rude behavior as Danes leaves. He also meets Jilly Kitzinger, a supposed talent spotter who congratulates him on his acting performance. She offers her services as a public relations representative. He turns her down when he gets an offer to appear on Oprah.
Peterfield prepares drinks for the prisoners and slips poison into Jack’s cola. When the effects take hold, he rushes to the lavatory and vomits while musing that his immune system is also critically vulnerable. Gwen puts the data points together and prompts Rex to search Lyn. Lyn is quickly apprehended and Jack identifies the poison as arsenic based on a Slovenian boyfriend who took it for skincare. Rex is confused since that was in the 1800s.
Esther happens across strange events at the CIA, including mysterious agents prowling through her account and Rex’s office. She’s also in receipt of an odd sum of money from China, framing her as a double agent. She swipes her co-worker’s badge and makes her escape. Come to find out, the agents are under orders from Friedkin.
Dr. Juarez attends an impromptu medical conference about the Miracle. She learns that people are still aging and can be critically injured, but skin cells will still divide and die like normal. In fact, the Miracle is limited to humans. Microorganisms will become resistant to medicine as they have an eternity to feed on bodies and grow stronger. Vera also learns food and medical supplies will drop rapidly and the ever-growing population could become a big problem.
Rex calls Vera for help with Jack’s condition. The conference attendees guide Gwen and Rex in how to mix an antidote, but Lyn interferes. Gwen dispatches Lyn with a punch to the face and then injects Jack with the antidote. It’s painful, but it does the trick. Rex calls Friedkin and arranges for a security team to meet them upon landing.
Jilly Kitzinger makes the rounds, now trying to woo Vera. Vera figures out that Jilly works for a pharmaceutical company and initially rejects the offer, but changes her mind when Jilly gives her a tip about how to navigate Congress.
The plane lands and everyone is escorted to the terminal. Esther calls Rex to warn him as the security team frees Lyn. Rex has also received a sum of money from China. As Esther races to the airport, Rex bluffs his way through freeing Jack and Gwen. In the ensuing fight, Rex snaps Lyn’s neck, but under the current circumstances, she’s still alive.
Jack gets his vortex manipulator back as Esther and Vera arrive at the airport. Rex gets a bag of painkillers from the doctor and he piles into Esther’s Mini with Gwen and Jack. Their escape is briefly stalled by Lyn who bobbles around before collapsing. Esther drives on, wondering what the hell is happening.
Gwen answers her with a smirk: “Welcome to Torchwood.”
For what is mostly a bottle episode, this one pushes the plot along quite well. Someone wants Torchwood gone for good, presumably to prevent them from stopping the Miracle, and those battle lines are drawn here. The team is certainly not cohesive, but we have a good understanding of who’s who.
We also see a lot of ground covered with respect to the Miracle’s effects on humanity and the planet. The medical industry is panicking as they realize that the rules of the game have substantially shifted. I loved that writer Doris Egan (who also worked on Smallville, Tru Calling, and House, M.D.) worked the Greek myth of Tithonus into the discussion of eternal life without eternal youth. Al bacio!
The frantic quest for an antidote for Jack was very humorous, especially as Gwen got more stressed, and reminded me of the Doctor/Donna blitz in The Unicorn and the Wasp.
Overall, a good continuation of the plot with substantial world building.
Rating: 4/5 – “Would you care for a jelly baby?”
