Which famous dancers do you consider to be short, average, or tall?
Short (under 5’6): Skylar Brandt, Misty Copeland, Evgenia Obratsova, Nina Kaptsova, Alina Cojocaru, Natalia Makarova, Ektaterina Krysanova, Tiler Peck, Maria Kochetkova, Iana Salenko, Osipova
Average (not too small or tall): Maria Alexandrova, Nela, Olesya Novikova, Diana Vishneva, Polina Semionova, Viktoria Tereshkina, Maria Khoreva
Tall (over 5’7): Zakharova, Ekaterina Shipulina, Lopatkina, Olga Smirnova, Alina Somova, Isabella Boylston
5'6" (167cm) is the average height, particularly in Europe. It's also quite common here for companies to post a minimum requirement of 165cm for women- certainly not always followed though. I think the bar for being a 'short' dancer needs to be dancers under that minimum.
Short (under 5’4 / 165): Skylar Brandt, Misty Copeland, Evgenia Obratsova, Alina Cojocaru, Natalia Makarova, Tiler Peck, Maria Kochetkova, Iana Salenko, Natalia Osipova
Average (5'5-6"/ 167) Maria Alexandrova, Marianela Nunez, Diana Vishneva, Ekaterina Krysanova, Nina Kaptsova
Tall (5’7+ / 170+): Viktoria Tereshkina (I think she's just 170, looking at pictures with her and Vishenva) Svetlana Zakharova, Ekaterina Shipulina, Ulyana Lopatkina, Olga Smirnova, Alina Somova, Olesya Novikova, Isabella Boylston, Polina Semionova (definitely over 170), Maria Khoreva (also right about 170)

Which dancers are religious? Here is what I know so far:
Zakharova is an outspoken Orthodox Christian, she crossed herself before doing an SB show, posts about holy days and she said in an interview along the lines of “God help me” with a prayer gesture when she mentioned the quick changes for La Dame Aux Camellias.
Vishneva is also an outspoken Orthodox, she got baptized and had her son baptized too.
Obraztsova posts on holy days and mentioned baptizing her twin girls.
Smirnova had her wedding in a church, I think she said something about how her family wasn’t religious but now she believes in God. She also I think wears cross necklaces too and she mentioned how her conscience led her to denounce the war, so I definitely think she’s implicitly Orthodox Christian as well. If you want to see the full interview, it’s on the Bolshoi YouTube channel.
Osipova-had an icon of Mary and Jesus in her dressing room, wears cross necklaces sometimes, has said that the stage was like a church.
Lopatkina was known to cross herself before shows and Somova has posted on holy days/attended church.
Catholic-Nicoletta Manni and Timofej Andreshenko(sp?) of La Scala had a wedding Mass in a church.
I also think Marianela Nunez is Catholic too, she wore a cross necklace to a rehearsal, she posted a cat nativity, and has a childhood picture of her brothers with rosaries.
Jewish-Maya Plisetskaya was subject to antisemitism in the USSR, and Skylar Brandt of ABT has a grandfather who survived the Holocaust. The current head of SAB, Dena Abergel is an Orthodox Jew and I think asked Martins to not have rehearsals on Saturdays.
Christian-Joy Womack, Jenny Ringer
Thank you for this information(?) I’m not sure what to do about this information though 😅
If it helps them in their lives, then I’m happy for them.

ABT Don Quixote Thoughts

Kitri/Dulcinea: Skylar Brandt Basilio: Herman Cornejo Mercedes/Queen of the Dryads: Cassanda Trenary Espada: Gabe Stone Shayer
1. Skylar Brandt is the best ballerina at ABT for sure.  Her Kitri was phenomenal, captivating and drawing you in from her very first step into open fourth with the fan flick to the very last bow in front of the curtain.  Her technique was flawless, whenever she would do a developee or grand battement to the side, her foot/leg was so turned out you could almost see the bottom of her pointe shoe and it was so high even with her hips staying completely square.  I have absolutely no idea how she did it, but it was stunning.  The act I variation had perfect energy; her Kitri jump isn’t as high or flexible as I expected from her, but it’ll come with time!  The line of pirouettes, holy shit.  They were fast but on music, perfect fifth into a perfect passe every single time and she needs to give a master class on spotting lol.  You could tell she was a bit tired in act III, but again that stamina will come.  I love the choreography where it’s passe passe into saut de chat into of passe passe bourree and she flew in her saut de chats!  In this version they do echappees into attitude turn and she did those really well; a lot of the time the ballerina struggles to stay on the music in that moment, but she hit it every single time.  Her fouettes were all right, not awful but not a stand out part of the performance.  She did them, accomplished them, and looked good.  In this version, they cut out the final diagonal of piques which bummed me out because she would have done them SO WELL, but oh well.
NOW FOR HER DULCINEA.  HOLY SHIT.  Her control, her perfect positioning, her hops en pointe where her foot came perfectly to her knee during the petit battements, her pique manege, everything was PERFECT.  I could watch that variation alone over and over; honestly for me it was the stand out part of the performance.  I thought this would be the part of the performance that would be the least awesome, but honestly it was my favorite part.
2. Before the performance started, Christine Shevchenko (born in Ukraine) came out and spoke a little bit about her life in Ukraine and about Odessa and dedicated the performance to Ukraine.  After she spoke, we all stood while the orchestra played the Ukrainian national anthem.  It was very emotional and a beautiful show of support to the country.
3. Now for the other dancers:
Herman Cornejo: time to retire.  His jumps are low and while he did well in the fake suicide scene, other than that I was bored.  He definitely got better as the show went on, but honestly if I never see him again, then cool.
Gabe Stone Shayer (Espada): OMG.  He was the stand out man in the performance.  Normally Espada and the toreadors are kind of boring...not Gabe.  He needs to be promoted to principal and dance Basilio IMMEDIATELY.
Cassandra Trenary (Mercedes/Queen of the Dryads): meh.  I don’t know why she’s a principal.  I don’t really have anything to say about her.
Kanon Kimura (Amour/Cupid): yes yes yes yes yes YES.  If Obraztsova is the gold standard for this role, Kanon is the platinum standard.  She was so light and quick and airy and playful, I can’t pick one thing to write about because everything was flawless.  In the coda, she did fall, but got right back up and continued and it didn’t matter at all.  I hope to see more and more of her!
Garegin Pogossian (Gypsy Couple): incredible.  Again, normally this part is insanely boring to me, but he had such energy and his jumps were huge (for an American dancer).  I hope he continues to gain more roles as well.
All in all, it was a fantastic performance that I didn’t want to end.  You know a performance is good when it doesn’t feel like 3 hours went by!  Here are some videos and pictures from the curtain calls!

Asked and Answered: An assortment of long overdue answers
dance-like-matty asked: that mayerling livestream😬……..
To be honest I haven’t watched it yet. It’s not a favourite ballet, and to sit through it in-person with my favourite cast was hard enough...
do you know anything about how nikisha fogo is doing in sf?
She was out for almost a year with an injury. SFO aren’t as public with their recordings and castings so it’s hard to know how well she’s doing.
have you seen skylar brandts rose adagio? her balance is insane
link for it
https://www.instagram.com/tv/CLyIah8HPMK/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
what are your thoughts on her? i personally saw her kitri and i had no complaints. great technique and character, her principal title is well deserved IMO, heard her giselle was out of this world too. i don’t understand why people say she isn’t deserving of her principal title just because her parents have money and are donors to ABT. The talent is definitely there and she made her way through the ranks for over 10 years.
Yes I think she’s a great dancer and I think she should be at a better company.
Nepotism can lead to very underserving people getting promoted ahead of themselves, which is why so many are quick to dismiss anyone who benefits in that way. Luckily in Brandt’s case, she does have the talent to back it up.
why is diana vishneva still listed as a principal if she doesn’t dance with the company anymore (as far as i can tell) ?
She does still occasionally.
There’s a lot of politics behind stuff like that in Russia. It isn’t a title she’s just going to give up, and the clout of having her listed is good for them as well. The Mariinsky also frequently leaves people listed as principals for years after they stop dancing.
hey so what do you think of manon as a ballet? are you. fan? not a fan? choreography, structure? i saw it for the first time recently and idk how i’m feeling about it just yet. just curious! your blog is awesome :)
Manon for me has the best PDD of any ballet I’ve seen. They match the story and emotions perfectly. Many people adore Macmillan’s PDD but find the rest of his ballet’s boring. I understand this criticism. I feel that way about Mayerling. But for me, I can overlook it in Manon. I find the corps scenes well put together, and find Lescaut to provide enough entertainment in other scenes as well.
what does it mean when something says a vaganova graduate graduated in the 'class of _____'? for instance 'renata shakirova graduated in 2015, class of tatiana udalenkova'.
.... it’s what it says on the tin, I don’t really know how else to explain it? That’s the year she graduated from the Academy.
What is your favorite cast of Manon? Thinking about buying a DVD of it, but cannot decide between the DuPont/Bolle version or Sarah/Vandream version.
Lamb/Muntagirov all the way. I don’t really rate Bolle.
