My own personal depiction of The Sleer, one of the Characters of Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book". This Beast is described being a Three-Headed Serpent Monster that lives in The Graveyard's Barrow Grave along with the Indigo Man. A Creature that only Bod (the Main Character of The Graveyard Book) can see, this fictional creature is said to be an ancient malicious spirit who inhabits the deep ancient barrow of the Grave and Guards its Treasure of a Long Lost Master. It appears in one of the Chapters, "The New Friend" where Bod meets Scarlett for the first time and then later on, the Monster defeats the Man Jack (the One Serial Killer who killed Bod's Biological Family when he was a Baby), never to be seen again. The last few days of living with Bucky was ‘fun’ to say the least. He accidentally walked into your room after you took a shower and you were about to go into the large closet to get clothes, but the door that you forgot to lock opened, and you were trying to say something but you got nervous and stumbled over your words, and so the two of you had been avoiding each other at all cost. So you were in the kitchen and you felt the slow insanity of being stuck in a house for almost four days straight kick in, you didn’t want to go talk to Bucky at the moment so you just wrote a little sticky not saying that you were going to just go to the library for a little while and maybe go to a few shops.
So you just left, you felt better after just taking it easy for almost the past week, and so you felt like you would be fine for a few hours just being out and about. You parked and walked into the library, where you skimmed the shelfs looking for specific books to keep you entertained, but as you skimmed you looked up to see a man with long hair, and slim features, looking at you, you just smiled softly at him, in return.
He walked up to you. “I’m so sorry, your beauty caught my eye.” His accented voice rang out smooth as butter.
“Oh um thank you, I’m Y/n.” You held your hand out.
“Loki.” He introduce softly. “Lovely to meet you.”
The two of you started to chat getting to know one another, Loki seemed quite nice and he even was more interested than Bucky in your work, so you went from the library to a little cafe, to grab a cup of coffee. It felt like a breath of fresh air, from what your life has become and it was nice.
You felt ever so dizzy, after a few sips of youse, your words became sleered. “Y/n are you alright?” Loki asked you, it sounded like an echo.
Bucky took a small break from working, he headed down to the kitchen, to get something to eat and as he walked in he noticed a paper laying out for him to obviously read, he read through it.
I’m heading out to go to the library and maybe do some looking around shops. I am going crazy being locked in this house, but I’ll be back in a little bit ps I wrote this around 1:35. -Y/n
Bucky looked at his watch seeing it was three. Maybe you got caught up. He'd give it about an hour before he gets himself worked up.
Loki listened to what she said, every word swallowing it up like a snake with a mouse, but he couldn’t help but think about a week earlier.
When he had told his men to make a move against Henry. Henry knew Loki was interested in her, yet the man gave her over to Barnes. He knew what he was doing so he made his move and he had his men hit the small vehicle, enough to send the loud message, the point was to put her in the hospital and he did just that. He had his men watching Barnes house, and once he got notice she was leaving he had them follow so he could be where she was going, he found himself introducing himself to her in the middle of the Library, then he offered to get coffee, and this is where he made a move. “Go grab a seat for us.” He told her, he went up and ordered. He knew she would want something sugary, so he ordered a coffee with lots of creamer for you, and just a black coffee with sugar for himself. He just dropped a small little thing into yours. He put it in front of Y/n, to drink, and he watched as she became slightly drowsy, and he hurried to help her stand up and walk out of the small shop.
He led her to a large SUV, like the one that he had hit her car with, and they got in and they pulled into the street and drove off towards Loki’s home.  His driver pulled up to the large house, Loki had a room prepared for her since he set eyes on her a few years back, and so he carried her up and laid her on the bed.
You woke up looking around the dark bedroom in confusion, you got up and walked to the door, wondering what happened, you wandered the large house, and you found a large painting of Loki hanging above a stairway. You walked down the steps, and found the man in the painting. “Loki what happened?” You asked. “How did I get here?”
“I drugged you and brought you to my house.” He said honestly.
You stood frozen in shock. “That’s not funny Loki.” You started seriously.
“And I wasn’t joking.” He started standing up, and he started to walk towards you.
You started to back away, and you started to run, towards where you thought the door would be, and as you ran, he followed, you reached the front door, and opened it, you ran out of the house as you tried running up the driveway, two large hands grabbed you, you screamed out.
“Thor, great job.” Loki praised the man. “Take her back to the living room and make sure she cannot run.”
“Let go of me!” You yelled.
Bucky waited, and an hour went and Y/n wasn’t back, so he made calls telling his men to get to his house immediately. Once there Steve and Sam were the first to ask what everyone was wondering. “What's the big problem?”
“Y/n, she hasn’t been back in hours after going to the library, and then to do some looking at shops.” He explained.
“And..” Sam led on.
“And she left over four hours ago, and I haven't seen her since she said she’d be back about an hour or two after, and so I waited, I need her to find out. I feel like something bad happened.” Bucky said with a demanding tone.
“Okay I and Sam will take the library, the rest will go to scour stores near there.” Steve told him.
As all of the men left, Bucky’s eye caught a small coffee shop that seemed like something Y/n would want to go to, so Bucky had the car stop and he walked into the building with a picture of Y/n. “Have you seen a woman who looks like this?” Bucky asked after walking directly to the counter.
“M-Mr. Barnes.” The owner, who is a woman, stumbled out.
Bucky glaired. “I’m not here for payments, Susan, I’m here for an answer.”
“Um y-yes, she was here with a man, he walked her out she seemed out of it.” She explained what happened.
“What did the man look like?” He asked.
She thought for a moment. “He had slicked back black hair, and he had a slim nose, sharp features and bright green eyes.”
“Fucking Loki, Susan I’m letting you off for this month but don’t think it’ll happen again.” He briskly walked out of the store keeping his cool.
He slammed the door as he got into the car, and slid in. “Take me back home, I’ve got some shit to attend too, tell Steve and the rest to head back.”
Once all his men were back he spoke to them all. “I want the fucking little shits house watched 24/7, and if you get a chance get her back, you are dismissed figure out who will start wat, Steve stay behind.” Once the other men left, Bucky turned to his best friend. “You and the rest of the right hands meet right?”
“Um yeah, we usually just make it a small dinner, but it's nothing big.” The blond shrugged.
“Talk to Thor, and have Tony tell Henry.” Bucky ordered, before dismissing him.
Loki was trying to work though listening to Y/n scream at the top of her lungs along with pounding on the lock door. He stood up and headed to the door and unlocked it, she backed away as he marched into the room, he grabbed her roughly. “Shut the fuck up!” He growled.
She looked up at him. “No, you don’t fucking scare me.” He watched as she eyed him up and down.
Loki huffed. “I wanted to be nice but since I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen.” He smirked sinisterly.
A few days later Steve went to dinner. “I know this is supposed to be a neutral zone, but something that is going to break war out has happened Thor, your brother took Y/n.”
The blonde looked at him. “I know, she tried running a few days ago. I stopped her.”
Tony and Steve looked at eachother, and that is when the close range shots were fired, Natasha, Clint, and Bruce all looked around. Natasha was a part of the America-Russian mafia family of Alexie, right hand to her father, Clit was right hand of Nick, The S.H.I.L.D family, and Bruce was right hand to his cousin Jennifer, who was the leader of the Walters family, and those were just a hand full of the families. Thor fell to the table with the holes in his head and chest, bleeding out. “Sides are going to be chosen. I suggest you all choose the one who's going to win.” Steve said to the rest.
“I’ve gotta talk to dad about it but I know he’ll choose Barnes.” Natasha promised.
The other two men mumbled that they’d do the same, for now they showed their devotion by helping them take the giant of a man out to a car and going deep into the forest, which is where Steve and Tony had already buried an unmarked grave for the man. Steve could feel the dark feeling of a war deep in his soul and he knew what was already happening and started.
Loki the next day couldn’t help but notice the missing brother the next day and so his men notified him what had happened. “Rogers along with some of the other right hands carried him to a car and into the trunk but there was some blood insinuating he was shot, boss.”
Loki’s rage builds up, and so he thought of how to get back at Barnes, He walked up to the door of the room, he walked in, but when he walked in and he could see her his worry got picked up, he shut and locked the door behind him the window was still sealed shut, so he crossed that off, then he walked into the expanding closet of clothes, he moved dresses shirts, pants, skirts, she wasn't found, he was about to turn to walk out back to the room, when he felt the cool leather of a belt around his neck, she slowly crossed it together to choke him, he started hacking and thrashing when he gripped her wrist and pushed her she hit the door way. “That was fucking stupid.”
Her, e/c colored eyes looked at him in fear along with the black, blue and purple bruise ringing around her right eye. “You don’t scare me.” It came out shaker than the first time she said it.
“Just you wait.” He growled.

The Graveyard Book: Quotations and Explanations
Tumblr media
1. “You're always you, and that don't change, and you're always changing, and there's nothing you can do about it.” (Ch. 8)
2. “Face your life, its pain, its pleasure,” (Ch. 8)
3. “The tongue is the most remarkable. For we use it both to taste out sweet wine and bitter poison, thus also do we utter words both sweet and sour with the same tongue.” (Ch. 7)
4. “In the graveyard, no one ever changed. The little children Bod had played with when he was small were still children; Fortinbras Bartleby, who had once been his best friend, was not four or five years younger than Bod was, and they had less to talk about each time they saw each other; Thackeray Porringer was Bod’s height and age, and seemed to be in much better temper with him;...” (Ch. 7)
I thought this quotation related to Peter Pan, specifically the Lost Boys and Neverland, in that these younger children were never going to grow up. Yes, they are dead, but they also keep their youth, unlike Bod, who has to grow up. Bod is like Wendy, who leaves Neverland, returns to her home and becomes an adult. Bod also has to eventually leave the Graveyard, and he loses the sense of magic he had while he was there.
5. “You're alive, Bod. That means you have infinite potential. You can do anything, make anything, dream anything. If you can change the world, the world will change. Potential. Once you're dead, it's gone. Over. You've made what you've made, dreamed your dream, written your name. You may be buried here, you may even walk. But that potential is finished.” (Ch. 6)
Silas is teaching Bod that he still has a life to live rather than being dead in the graveyard with all the other ghosts. Unlike everyone else, he can still go out and live, with the potential to change the world or live out his dreams. Up until this moment, Bod didn’t realize how different he was from the others in the graveyard, but this pivotal scene makes him realize he wants to leave the graveyard and attend school, so that one day he can get revenge on the man who killed his family.
6. “Fear is contagious. You can catch it.” (Ch. 6)
I can’t help but think of the current pandemic, and how everyone has reacted to it. When the media (or another entity) announces the possibility that something could happen, everyone rushes to panic mode. This is the fear that grows and causes catastrophe.
7. “‘And there are always people who find their lives have become so unsupportable they believe the best thing they could do would be to hasten their transition to another plane of existence.'
'They kill themselves, you mean?' said Bod. [...]
'Indeed.'
'Does it work? Are they happier dead?'
'Sometimes. Mostly, no. It's like the people who believe they'll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn't work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you.’” (Ch. 4)
I think this is an interesting way to look at mental illness and suicide, or even the concept of escaping one’s existence. If there is an afterlife, as this book suggests, then this passage explains there was no point in taking one’s life, because the unhappiness won’t end. It reminds me of when people advise me I can only find happiness inside myself, and not in a place, thing or person. If you can’t be happy with yourself, you’ll never be happy. And based on this passage, apparently this is the case even in the afterlife.
8. “One grave in every graveyard belongs to the graveyard ghouls. Wander any graveyard long enough and you will find it–waterstained and bulging, with cracked or broken stone, scraggly grass or rank weeds about it, and a feeling, when you reach it, of abandonment. It may be colder than the other gravestones, too, and the name on the stone is all too often impossible to read.” (Ch. 6)
9. “It is neither fair nor unfair, Nobody Owens. It simply is.” (Ch. 3)
10. “FEAR IS THE WEAPON OF THE SLEER.” (Ch. 2)
Fear is the weapon of any entity that attempts control: a dictator, a bully, a dystopian government. It isn’t any different in this book, when Bod goes under the gravesite and into the hillside. He has to overcome his fear in order to defeat the Sleer and to eventually become the master of the Sleer. This is a lesson for us all: to not give in to fear.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
2009 Newbery Medal Winner
Adapted by Delano Intermediate School (2024)
From Delano, MN
Judges' Remarks: This was a zippy, fun summary of the story with some inventive moments. There was an effective mix of green screen and outdoor locations, the man Jack had a suitably creepy mask and costume, and it was clever to indicate that Bod and Scarlett were younger children by having them scoot about on their knees. The script was at times witty and self-aware ("why do I feel a montage coming?" followed by a genuinely fun montage that went through many locations) and I particularly liked the creepy voice of the Sleer, and the camera trickery that made it look like Jack was being devoured at the end, disappearing into the Sleer! Creative and entertaining, with exuberant performances.

What better way then to draw a Third Illustration to The Graveyard Book where in Chapter 2, Bod and Scarlett have been friends for awhile but when they enter down through the Crypt and enter The Indigo Man and The Sleer (only here, I've drew the Indigo Man) where Bod protects Scarlett from these Strange Crypt Creatures.

I totally get and respect author and reader insert fics that are for shippy purposes, but honestly, if I were to be inserted into a narrative, I think I would want to be the unbeatable monster or curse that the heroes use in order to defeat the people who hurt them by tricking them into releasing the unstoppable horrible fate upon themselves.
Like, I think I would want to be the sleer from the graveyard book. Come into my temples, heroes, get a glimpse of the danger. Where you escaped your enemies will not.
