Army-issue slide projector, with manual and box. You have to wonder how many recon photos and secret missions were projected. 1957

An interesting find: A portable slide projector with ‘screen’ that flips up for rear projection. When you want to review your tray before giving a presentation, or you only want to show your slideshow to 1-2 people at a time. :)

The Week Begins: The Meeting
So you are a composer, trying to show what a presentation sounds like – but only in audio, and without using words. “The Meeting” is what happens. from TomsTypewriter.com

Vacation movies
Tumblr media
The story's premise has Archie dreading the vacation videos of his grandparents. Then he sees them sky diving and crap and is impressed -- wow, the oldsters are more with it than he thought. The first inkling for his change in attitude comes in seeing their adaptation to technology. No stodgy old projecters for them. Now it is ... Hm.
Tumblr media
I am not sure you should be impressed they have a camcorder in 1988. And I do think in the twenty first century there might be something middlingly quaint if they wanted to drag out the old projector for a slide show -- though a PowerPoint presentation of photographs may be just the same. Do we really need to watch motion?

Even works with those “unique” slides you keep in that space behind the tool bench in the garage.

This is one of the, I'm sure, many hundreds of photographs of which I have no direct memory because I was too young. My dad's a photographer, you see, and he took a lot of family pictures when I was growing up, using his trusty analog 35mm.
We were over visiting yesterday, Mother’s Day, when he told me he and mom have something like fifty photo albums.
Fifty.
Photo albums.
I asked him if he's scanned them all and he laughed.
Way too many photos to scan, of course.
He has, though, been scanning what he judges to be the best pictures in those albums. Which is when he whipped out his phone and showed me the one up top of our little family circa 1966. And in a flashy show of social media prowess, he sent it to me via Messenger. Right then and there. 😉
How many of these did you scan, I asked.
The answer?
Around 16,000.
Woof.
Linzy definitely gotta kick out of seeing her dad as a pre-verbal, pre-walking human being. Which, yeah, is always a mind-blowing experience for any of us when it comes to parental units.
Afterward, Linzy sat next to my mom on the couch and showed her photos of her boyfriend and then videos of her cats. It was a modern-day grandmother-granddaughter experience and they had a great time of it, catching up like that.
Of course, back in the day, we used actual photo albums for that kind of thing. Photo albums and the occasional family slide show which was also a thing my dad enjoyed doing. Setting up this big portable screen in our living room while we all watched from the couch images move from one to the next as projected by his slide projector.
Anyway...
That's me, my mom and dad in the photo above. Hard to imagine there was a time in this world where that. Was us. But there we are. Me, in a rare moment of stillness, with my mom and dad just barely embarked on their very own family life.
It's striking to see them in this photograph, juxtaposed against their 2022 selves.
They really do look like they're just getting started.
😊
