There's something specifically about slings and how they really accentuate whump- broadcasting the presence of injury in such a visible manner, unable to hide unseen under clothes but instead making it clear there's an injury that needs to be supported and protected- giving the wearer an element of vulnerability, highlighting the fact that they’re injured, where the injury is, and almost painting a target there, either for caring or cruelty, while also rendering the arm immobile and the character more in need of help- not able to simply shrug off the injury but having to cope with the lasting effects of it, their every movement affected by it, the sling serving as constant reminder to both characters and audience of the injury.
