Small Hands 4: Arien the Maia

Surely you've noticed how the mere appearance of the sun or even the indirect appearance of sunlight has the power to totally change a mood or dynamic in Middle Earth? It brings comfort and hope and joy to those of good will and fear and discomfort and torment to the servants of evil, and in doing so it can be the difference between righteous victory or tragic defeat. And that huge power is wielded by none other than Arien the Maia.

You might argue that, as a Maia, Arien can't rightly be considered "small hands". After all, she's one of the divine beings brought into existence straight from the thought of Eru Iluvatar himself. That is hardly coming from a place of disadvantage or lack of power. But given the enormous gulf between the huge impact she has on Middle Earth and the relative lack of appreciation for her, I think she more than qualifies.

Arien is, if nothing else, a total and complete badass. She was originally a spirit of fire, many of whom were seduced by Melkor and eventually became the balrogs. But Arien never strayed from the path of the good and used her comfort with fire and heat to serve the Valar by tending to Laurelin, the golden tree. When the trees were ruined and the Valar came up with the concept of the sun and moon as a consolation for Middle Earth, they chose Arien to take on the task of guiding the sun across the sky each day.

In doing so, Arien forsook the human/elf-like form she had taken up til that point and became instead "a naked flame," terrible in her splendor. Too bright for most to look at directly, she was a source of attraction to some. Tilion, who guided the moon, was so constantly attracted to Arien that the moon became a somewhat wayward body that appeared in the sky at unexpected times as he sought to be near her. But she was a source of fear to others--Morgoth himself both hated and feared Arien, whose glance he couldn't endure and whose strength was so great that he never even attempted to assail her, choosing to hide in the shadows and the dark instead.

Arien's appearance in the skies of Middle Earth restored true light to the lives of the elves, woke the first men from their slumber and enticed them westward to their destinies in Beleriand. As the ages went on, she kept orcs and other foul creatures at bay, provided hope and courage to those in need, and inspired some of the greatest deeds accomplished in the long fight against evil. And she did it all in relative obscurity, day after day, millennia after millennia, just as she does today. So, hats off to Arien, a true legend who has somehow managed to be outshined despite being the source of the shine itself!
