✨ s w e e p s p r o j e c t ✨
— had trouble getting this project done and it’s still not
— but i’m calling it here since it’s the end of the year already
— in two days, i will be presenting work to designers and other people in the industry at nyc
— in exactly a week, i will be walking at commencement
— in maybe nine days, i’ll be moving into housing for a summer stock for the next three and a half months
— and after all that, i have no clue what i’m doing

I feel like I’ve seen a lot of “how to use tumblr for new twitter refugees” guides but not a lot of “how to figure out how what blogs to follow” posts out there? which is kind of the most important part of using the site and is the entire ‘cultivating your dash, customizing your experience’ bit. everyone has their own methods, but what has worked for me/ if I had to start from scratch, what I would do is:
start by following all of: your friends and people you like on other social networks who have their tumblrs listed
ao3 authors usually have tumblrs listed, other small authors/designers, artists, cosplayers, etc. follow them all. ie, there are a lot of really top notch small business dice creators who make really pretty dice and I love to follow them
some of the tags have people dedicated to reblogging cool photos of: space, fluid dynamics, shiny stones, fashion, etc. go to those tags to find dedicated blogs for those to follow
you can look around for ‘writeblr’ / ‘studyblr’ etc; sides of tumblr dedicated people talking about their personal experiences/inspo for those things; if that’s your jam, follow those people
search your favorite fandom tags, follow a bunch of people there
and now, for the most important step(s), once you’ve got some base material on your dash to work from:
if someone reblogs cool art that you like, follow the original artist
if there is any sort of post that seems cool/ person reblogging from a person who seems cool, click on their tumblr, if they seem interesting, follow them
if anyone reblogs something that you don’t like (for example, I have zero patience for anti discourse) or just seems to mostly have posts that are not Your Vibes, unfollow them
if you make friends with someone (they message you, interact with you a bunch, send you asks) and their blog seems your jam, follow them
note you could have been less lazy in the beginning of this process and actually scrolled down blogs to see if you like the content or not, and choose to not follow people whose content didn’t seem your cup of tea at the start, but I’m lazy and it’s really easy to unfollow people via noticing that what they’re putting on your dash doesn’t Vibe with you. if you do browser extensions, this is also a good time to install Shinigami Eyes (<-- I think that is the most current link?) to avoid terfs/ look for trans-friendly blogs
but yeah the main strategy is “follow liberally, use posts that are on your dash eventually to find more people to follow, unfollow liberally” and I think it works pretty well to get something set up as you figure out your own dash cultivation styles
ultimately it’s kind of like finding good works on ao3; you can sometimes find some good stuff sorting by most kudos/hits/bookmarks, but I have never found a more efficient ‘algorithm’ than once you are done reading everything you like from an author, going to their bookmarks, reading their bookmarks bc someone whose writing you like a lot will probably have good reading taste, and then rinse and repeat

25.4.21 // planning my first thematic chapter. ive been much chiller about my phd ever since ive decided i dont want to stay in academia. i dont feel the crushing pressure of having to know everything under the sun about my field, and pleasing my supervisors and other people in the uni has become just a practicality rather than grounds to build self esteem upon. ive also gotten a referral to the psychiatrist because the initial screening for adhd my gp had me do showed i was struggling a lot. excited to see how it all will pan out...

missing my trips to budapest and local bookstores. my portland shops are still closed, so it’s no cafe trips and coffee for me just yet. studying will have to be confined to my desk for now, but hey. least I’m saving money.
