I will never understand the "both sides are bad" people. Like, first off, GRRM himself has a clear idea over who is right (hint: it's the team whose line was not wiped out). If the fucking author has decided who is right and who is wrong, then why do people think they know better?
Second, one way to know if one team is as bad as the other is knowing the motivations of both sides. TB wants to reclaim the throne for the woman whom the past king declared heir and her descendants. TG wants to usurp the declared heir and ensure women aren't allowed to inherit the throne. These are the basic motivations of both sides. Wow, I wonder which team we should root for if we're not misogynists?
Let's also look at the actions of both teams. Now, we know that in the book and the show, the Greens declared war first; Alicent demanding Rhaenyra be disinherited after Aegon's birth/the green dress at the anniversary feast in the books and Alicent's green dress at Rhaenyra's wedding. We also know that in the book and show, Alicent spent her children's childhoods, particularly Aegon and Aemond's, teaching them that Rhaenyra and her children were inferior. Lucerys did cut Aemond's eye, but that was only after Aemond was threatening potentially lethal harm to his brother(s).
Now we're not even going to go into how the greens ran KL, but I will fast forward to the actual usurpation. The Greens were the ones who usurped the rightful heir, Rhaenyra. There was no law concerning inheritance, and women inherited the seats of both the Great and lesser houses. So the Greens did commit treason. And to top off this treason, the Greens also drew first blood when Aemond killed Lucerys.
During the Dance itself, the Greens sent an assassin (Arryk Cargyll) after Rhaenyra and/or her children, executed any lords who didn't declare for them, sacked Duskendale, barred the smallfolk from fleeing KL, burned the Riverlands through Aemond, massacred Tumbleton through Daeron, were hated by the smallfolk (Aegon and Aemond), wasted or stole the gold from the Crown's treasury, invited the Triarchy into Westeros causing the sack of Spicetown, planned to have Aegon the Younger castrated, and Aegon was murdered by his own supporters.
The Blacks sent B&C to assassinate Jaehaerys (without Rhaenyra's say-so), took KL and employed a harsh tax, sought out and executed green supporters, allied with Dalton Greyjoy who pillaged the coasts, declared Addam Velaryon a traitor, ordered Nettles' execution, and continued fighting after Rhaenyra's death.
For the sake of time, I've only listed the war crimes/atrocities/unpopular choices done by the teams. But anyway, let's look at these lists, who exactly caused the most harm and actively sought to start this war? The answer is the Greens, end of story.
So no, there is no actual grounds for "both sides are equally bad". Disliking the feudal system and the harm it does to the common people is one of the points of F&B. However, you can dislike and not support feudalism while acknowledging that the one of the teams (the Greens) was more in the wrong and more of a danger to the realm than the other. Being "team smallfolk" doesn't work when you're refusing to acknowledge that one team was actually better for the smallfolk than the other. The Blacks were not only better liked by the smallfolk, but they also committed far less atrocities that destroyed the lives of thousands and didn't start the fucking war in the first place.

Did nobles interact with commoners regularly, and if so did they do so outside formal sessions? For instance would nobles leave their manors and engage one to one, or was this likely to end in violence?
I've actually written quite a bit about this: it was considered to be an important part of a noble's political education for them to learn how to "condescend" gracefully to the commons without either being overly "familiar" or "giving insult." It's a bit like how we expect modern politicians to be very good at surface level social interaction - shaking hands, kissing babies, remembering people's names, etc.
A nobleman who couldn't do that - John of Gaunt was famous for being utterly crap at it - would get a bad reputation as overly proud (in one direction) or obsequious.

Targaryen Eating Habits and Other Smallfolk Tales
Tumblr media
AO3 Link
Rating: M (because the servants witness a lot of raunchiness)
Summary: While the Targaryens are busy ruling Westeros, the smallfolk keep their draconic overlords fed, watered, and clothed.
Notes: This is a non-chronological anthology of servant/smallfolk POVs as they interact with the Targs. Updates will be sporadic, depending on when I feel inspired to write a chapter. Suggestions for POVs you’d like to see are welcome!

I think it’s funny how people selectively apply actions of the smallfolk as based/justified only if it benefits their faves. They will say that the storming of the dragonpit was some great anti-colonial communist action but then cry about Maelor being ripped to pieces by the smallfolk. I’m sorry, but do you support smallfolk’s senseless anger or not ? Why is one based and the other abhorrent ? Why can’t anyone in this fandom stay consistent with their beliefs ?
Apparently the Greens only care about noble kids, no matter how much some yell about the smallfolk. Maelor was a noble kid and a Green, therefore he matters more than the thousands of smallfolk the Greens killed.

Interpretations of the red comet:
Daenerys:
Jhogo spied it first." There" he said in a husted voice. Dany looked and saw it low in the east. The first star was a comet, burning red; the dragon's tail. She could not have asked for a stronger sign.
AGOT, DAENERYS X
It is the herald of my coming, she told herself as she gazed up the night sky with wonder in her heart. The gods have send it to show me the way.
ACOK, DAENERYS I
Maester Cressen:
An omen of blood,foretelling murder...yes
ACOK, PROLOGUE
Ser Arys Oakheart:
[Sansa]"What do you think it means?"she asked him.
"Glory to your bethrothed" Ser Arys answered at once. "See how it flames across the sky today on His Grace's name day, as if the Gods themselves have raised a banner in his honor[...]
ACOK, SANSA I
Smallfolk on Kings Landing:
[Ser Arys]" The smallfolk have named it King Joffrey's comet".
Doubtless that was what they told Joffrey; Sansa was not so sure. "I've heard servants calling it the Dragon's tail".
ACOK, SANSA I
Osha:
[...]The way she said it made him silver, and when he asked what he comet meant, she answered" Blood and fire, boy, and nothing sweet"
ACOK, BRAN I
Septon Chayle:
Bran asked Septon Chayle about the comet while they were sorting through some scrolls snatched from the library fire. "It is the sword that slays the season", he replied and soon after the white raven came from Oldtown, bringing word of autumn, so doubtless he was right.
ACOK, BRAN I
Old Nan:
Through Old Nan did not think so, and she'd lived longer than any of them. "Dragons" she said lifting her head and sniffing. She was near blind and could not see the comet, yet she claimed she could smell it."It be dragons, boy" she insisted. Bran got no princes from Nan, no more than he ever had.
ACOK, BRAN I
Greatjon Umber, Edmure Tully, Catelyn Stark and Brynden Tully:
[Catelyn]"The Greatjon told Robb that the old gods have unfurled a red flag of vengeance for Ned. Edmure thinks it's an omen for victory for Riverrun - he sees a fish with a long tail, in the tully colors, red against blue."She sighed . "I wish I had their faith. Crimson is a Lannister color".
"That thing's not crimson" Ser Brynden said.Nor Tully red, the mud red of the river. That's blood up there, child, smeared across the sky".
ACOK, CATELYN I
Theon Greyjoy:
It's my comet, Theon told himself, sliding a hand into his fur-lined coat to touch the oilskin pouch snug in its pocket.
ACOK, THEON I
Selyse Florent:
Queen Selyse was adamant" None of them was chosen by R'hllor. No red comet blazed across the heavens to herald their coming. None of them wielded the Lightbringer, the red sword of heroes. And none of the paid the price. Lady Melisandre will tell you, my lord.Only death can pay for life".
ASOS, DAVOS V
Melisandre:
[Melisandre]"You are he who must stand against the Other. The one whose coming was prophesied five thousand years ago. The red comet was your herald. You are the prince that was promised and if you fail, the world falls with you".
ASOS, DAVOS VI
Aeron Greyjoy:
The priest had dreamed the same dream, when he'd first seen the red comet in the sky. We shall sweep over the green lands with fire and sword, root out the seven gods from the septons and the white trees of the northmen...

A Game of Thrones, Tyrion II
“Why do you read so much?”
Tyrion looked up at the sound of the voice. Jon Snow was standing a few feet away, regarding him curiously.
He closed the book on a finger and said, “Look at me and tell me what you see.”
The boy looked at him suspiciously. “Is this some kind of trick? I see you. Tyrion Lannister.”
Tyrion sighed. “You are remarkably polite for a bastard, Snow. What you see is a dwarf.
“You are what, twelve?”
“Fourteen,” the boy said.
“Fourteen, and you’re taller than I will ever be. My legs are short and twisted, and I walk with difficulty.
“I require a special saddle to keep from falling off my horse. A saddle of my own design, you may be interested to know. It was either that or ride a pony.
“My arms are strong enough, but again, too short. I will never make a swordsman.
“Had I been born a peasant, they might have left me out to die, or sold me to some slaver’s grotesquerie. Alas, I was born a Lannister of Casterly Rock, and the grotesqueries are all the poorer. Things are expected of me.
“My father was the Hand of the King for twenty years. My brother later killed that very same king, as it turns out, but life’s full of these little ironies.
“My sister married the new king and my repulsive nephew will be king after him.
“I must do my part for the honor of my House, wouldn’t you agree? Yet how?
“Well, my legs may be too small for my body, but my head is too large, although I prefer to think it is just large enough for my mind. I have a realistic grasp of my own strengths and weaknesses.
“My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer, and I have my mind…and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”
Tyrion tapped the leather cover of the book. “That’s why I read so much, Jon Snow.”

Posthumous Characters GIF Sets → Jenny of Oldstones
Aegon’s eldest son Duncan, Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the throne, was the first to defy him. Though betrothed to a daughter of House Baratheon of Storm’s End, Duncan became enamored of a strange, lovely, and mysterious girl who called herself Jenny of Oldstones in 239 AC, whilst traveling in the Riverlands. Though she dwelt half-wild amidst ruins and claimed descent from the long-vanished kings of the First Men, the smallfolk of surrounding villages mocked such tales, insisting that she was only some half-mad peasant girl, and perhaps even a witch. It was true that Aegon had been a friend to the smallfolk, had practically grown up among them, but to countenance the marriage of the heir to the throne to a commoner of uncertain birth was beyond him. His Grace did all he could to have the marriage undone, demanding that Duncan put Jenny aside. The prince shared his father’s stubbornness, however, and refused him. Even when the High Septon, Grand Maester, and small council joined together to insist King Aegon force his son to choose between the Iron Throne and this wild woman of the woods, Duncan would not budge. Rather than give up Jenny, he foreswore his claim to the crown in favor of his brother Jaehaerys, and abdicated as Prince of Dragonstone. Even that could not restore the peace, nor win back the friendship of Storm’s End, however. The father of the spurned girl, Lord Lyonel Baratheon of Storm’s End—known as the Laughing Storm and famed for his prowess in battle—was not a man easily appeased when his pride was wounded. A short, bloody rebellion ensued, ending only when Ser Duncan of the Kingsguard defeated Lord Lyonel in single combat, and King Aegon gave his solemn word that his youngest daughter, Rhaelle, would wed Lord Lyonel’s heir. To seal the bargain, Princess Rhaelle was sent to Storm’s End to serve as Lord Lyonel’s cupbearer and companion to his lady wife. Jenny of Oldstones—Lady Jenny, as she was called by courtesy—was eventually accepted at court, and throughout the Seven Kingdoms the smallfolk held her especially dear. She and her prince, forever after known as the Prince of Dragonflies, were a favorite subject of singers for many years.

"The dwarf's wife did the murder with him," swore an archer in Lord Rowan's livery. "Afterward, she vanished from the hall in a puff of brimstone, and a ghostly direwolf was seen prowling the Red Keep, blood dripping from his jaws."
Jaime - pg 842
On his way back to King's Landing Jamie hears rumors about the Purple Wedding.
I rather enjoyed doing the smallfolk version of the "real" story.

Sometimes you just gotta witness the wonder that are very loud Targaryen stans who think the smallfolk don't matter & are boring, and who on top of that are extremely mad about that same smallfolk not stanning X monarch they think they should (obsessed about fictional boring people lol).
Like do you actually read Dany's chapters or did you just pretend you do and instead of it you exclusively watched like, scenepacks of Show!Dany being badass and burning stuff or whatever. Dany likes the smallfolk. All the people who are closest to being worthy of ruling care about them and aren't offended when they show their own independant thoughts.

I’m thinking of doing a Drabble series in the Daughters-verse with servant/smallfolk POVs of various Targaryen shenanigans. Ideas I have so far include:
Dragonstone servants the day Lucera makes three escape attempts
Serving maids during the breakfast where Daemon attacks Aemond
Maester Gerardys dealing with Joff’s experiments in the tower
The girls at the Garden of Flowers when Jace comes stumbling up
Something with Gyles the pie-maker
Nursemaids worried about their job security because Aegon keeps doing their job for them re: Cheeseball
Suggestions welcome! This will probably be a non-chronological oneshot collection that I dabble in whenever I need a break from the main series.
