Lost and Found

Summary: Hermes gets yoinked but that was years ago and now hes someone else Word count: 1137

“Here he is! My little boy!” Joel held out his arms as a blob of purple drifted towards him, giggling. Joel caught the boy, pulling him tight to his chest, hugging him. The little boy trying and failing to hug his father back, arms too small to wrap around his torso. “Hermes my boy!” Joel exclaimed, now holding out his son to the sky, the sun behind him, creating the perfect circle around him. 

With hesitance, Joel set Hermes down, crouching down to his level. Hermes swung his little backpack off his shoulders. “Papa sent you stuff!” The little boy open his bag with a snap! The magnets pulling apart. 

Joel let his head tilt, acting surprised every time, even though he wasn’t, “Oh did he now?” Hermes nodded, “Mhm!” After fishing around for a few more moments, he pulled out a nicely wrapped gift. 

Joel ruffled the boy's hair, or at least tried, the helmet in the way prevented much of it. But better safe than sorry. Gently he takes the package from Hermes, watching the way his hands were so much bigger than his, a smile forming from it. 

“Thank you, Hermes!” Joel put the gift away, the toddler following behind him with a waddle. It took Hermes a second to catch up. Joel watched as more pride swelled in his chest, remembering not too long ago teaching the boy to walk. Then he tripped with a yelp, Joel quickly shot out his arms making sure nothing hurt his boy. “You alright there big guy?” He asked picking up the boy, cradling him in his arms. Hermes just yawned in response, his eyes fluttering to stay awake. Joel chuckled, starting to gently rock his child, “Tired are we?” Hermes just nodded. “Long journey huh? But nothing for my strong boy!” 

Joel crossed over to the baby room that stood in shades of purple. Different than the rest of his buildings, contrasting to the white but gold still throughout the room, tying it together. Joel gently took off the helmet, Hermes already fast asleep in his arms with a slight snore. Joel stood there for a moment, drinking it all in. The boy once a statue made from just sticks and mud now real, living, and breathing, it couldn’t have been any better. He wanted to be in this moment forever. A gentle breeze caused Hermes' hair to sway. The sun's warmth showered over them. 

With reluctance, he set Hermes into his bed, tucking him in. Watching before eventually retreating to get the small backpack and unwrap the gift from Sausage. Joel set the backpack next to the door. He then walked to the storage room, picking up the gift and carefully pulling apart the paper, which he then threw into the ongoing fire. He would be fully content ripping it apart, but he did that once and he had serval fireworks shooting out everywhere. Never again. Now to the good bit, he opened the chest. The first thing he noticed was the letter, usually, there weren't letters. Usually, they just communicate through Hermes or via the coms. It gave him an uncomfortable feeling. Joel tucked the chest under his arm, crossing to the living room table, taking a seat. Popping open the wax seal, he unfurled the letter inside. 

Dear Joel,

Keep Hermes for a while. Things are, things are happening here. Not good things. It is in our best interest to have Hermes stay with you for the time being. I will not have his safety at risk. Keep an eye on him. Message me straight away if anything suspicious happens there.

Joel feels his throat closing. Sausage and Hermes in danger? Why wouldn't Sausage tell him what was happening? He's a god, there's nothing that could kill him. The gift didn't matter now. Thoughts swirled in his mind like a thunderstorm as he started to pace. The people he adores were in danger and they weren't asking for help. 

In his worry, he headed back to the purple room. Leaning in the doorway he watched as Hermes' chest rose and fell. He watched from the doorway, the curtains swaying. He slowly crossed the room, crouching beside the bed. He shakily brushed some hair from Hermes’ face. Gently he leaned over, pressing a kiss to his forehead. Right now all that mattered was Hermes’ safety, if it meant not seeing sausage for a while, that's how it was going to be. Anything to protect his boy. 

For the next week, Joel's eyes never left Hermes. But he was running out of rockets. If He left Hermes on the island nobody could get to him. They’d either need wings which not many had or swim up the waterfall which was impossible, no human could swim that far. Or so he reassured himself, that it wouldn't take him more than twenty minutes. 

But that's all it took.

The house seemed all too quiet. Then he noticed a chair out of place. “Hermes?” Joel called out adrenaline rushing through him, causing his voice to crack. He called out again, no response. He rushed to Hermes' room, he had just set him down for a nap. “Hermes come out this isn’t-” The words now crumpled in his throat. Hermes' little bed flipped over, curtains ripped, his little chair tipped over and missing a leg or two. 

He screams. 

The sounds of thunder makes Purpled jump, snapping out from any thought that was once there. The bitter taste of a memory still stuck on the back of his tongue. To distract himself, he watches the rain hit the window. The sky was dark and cloudy, as much as the rain brought him comfort, he missed the way the moon shone against the dark sky. Sometimes thunderstorms brought an un-scratchable itch to his brain. Something he didn’t want to dwell on too long. All that mattered was what was happening now and tomorrow. 

“Purpled, You alright?” The bed shifted weight as Boomer sat next to him. 

Purpled tore his eyes from the window to the smaller figure next to him, “Just, Just thinking.”

Even from under the big floppy frog hat, Boomer tilted their head up enough to look him in the eyes, “Do you wanna talk about it?” Purpled scrunched up his face, “I don’t think so.” He looked back to the rain, another thunder strike causing him to jump once more. 

He heard Boomer sigh, “That's just alright, but I'm not letting you be alone. No one is good on their own. Sticking together and all that stuff.” With a slight push, Purpleds head was now in boomers' lap. Not one of them said a word. The world was still. Purpled let himself relax. He was safe, he was with his family. Nothing else mattered.

The song I got for you was “The Whole World and You” by Tally Hall my interpretation of this is that after 3rd life was over, you Scott and Jimmy all finally felt like you had got a breath of fresh air. It was nice to not worry about dying, so the three of you were all at ease. Maybe you all tried to move on and forget, or maybe this song is just in a sense trying to cover up or deny that what happened in 3rd life did hurt you? But the three of you had each other, even if things were awkward. It was comforting to have people who shared what you went through, and you all became really close in Empires. The best you all could really do was forget and move on, so thats what you did.
