images of a smallmouth bass (micropterus dolomieu) my dad caught on a lake in new york state that connects to lake champlain. these fish are an invasive species throughout much of the US and southern canada.
smallmouth and largemouth bass both belong to the genus micropterus, and it can be easy to confuse the two at times. the key identifying factors that separate the smallmouth bass and the largemouth bass are their dorsal fins. smallmouth bass have joined dorsal fins that appear as one, while largemouth bass have a clearer separation between their dorsal fins.
smallmouth bass can also vary heavily in colour depending on their size and habitat. when living in clearer water, their markings are much more pronounced as opposed to living in cloudy water.

These Baits Will Land You Fall Bass
Fishing changes just like the seasons. Don't miss out on this list of must-have bass baits!
Sometimes, it can be challenging for anglers to catch fish when the weather shifts from Summer to Fall. Changes in barometric pressure can make fish swim to different depths, and when a cold front comes in, you might not catch any fish at all. Milwaukee River
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was too hot today to chase trout (maybe not for them, but for me). So I decided to stay home and fish in the river nearby instead.
The warm water species came through for me. I caught five smallies and what I thought was a whale but turned out to be a channel catfish. That catfish hit like a freight train and had some tug to it!

Ozark Springs Zoo is happy to announce the opening of a new aquatic exhibit, the Millpond.
This new exhibit winds through a ravine, much like a natural creek. On one side is the Millhouse, a concessions and refreshment building made from salvaged historic materials including a working water wheel. On the other side are “caves” with a set of underwater viewing areas for the featured animals, local freshwater fish. Animals featured in this multispecies exhibit include rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and alligator gar.
Although newly opened, some features of the Millpond exhibit are still under construction, including a mixed terrestrial-aquatic exhibit at the far end of the installation and an outdoor eating area on the back deck of the Millhouse.
