i think one of the best things to come out of my PhD (so far) is that i am learning to embrace finitude, and focusing more on the aspects of "what did i learn from this" instead of dwelling on getting a great grade. let me explain.
let's say i was taking this intro to neural engineering class in undergrad, where these hard as hell MATLAB assignments were due like once a month. i would be literally shitting a brick about trying to get it right, staying up late and compromising my health for the assignment, and then stressing like crazy over the grade. for it to all, subsequently and eventually, end up being fine and not the end of the world.
now, as a 1st year PhD student, in this exact position of having a hard as hell assignment that i kind of just figured out as i go, i'm not even trippin. like, i'm probably going to get half credit and i'm genuinely fine with that. why? because I: 1) embraced finitude of knowing that it's just not going to get done and 2) am celebrating the fact that I even learned the concepts to get half credit.
this...is a big mental shift that i'm really trying to cherish, because it took soooo long for me to get here. i also realize that i'm able to have this change in attitude now because undergrad is over, and for a PhD program, grades don't really matter as long as you meet the requirements to stay in your program. in undergrad, you're aiming for good grades because you want to have access to the next goal (job, internship, or grad school). but my god, is this such a RELIEVING mindset shift.

Back to campus for the second day of semester 1. I spent so long on Bio today and still feel like I haven’t achieved anything because it was all textbook readings and mindless notes.
Hoping tomorrow feels more productive, I’m putting the textbook away for a bit because it’s bothering me now.
Attended the Student Association’s club awards tonight, and my club got the award for Most Active in 2022! Keen to take on some more responsibility as secretary this year and organise some fun and engaging events <3

my quick tips for working / studying from home
- get dressed and style your hair as if you're going to school/work - even use the same perfume/ cologne as you normally do
(trick your mind into being motivated)
- plan things out - everything
(plan out your week, day, meal, etc. you can make these as specific as you’d like. this will help you stay on top of your work as well as stay healthy, especially if you live alone.)
- make studying/ working the first thing you do each day - best if you can start in the morning
(minimize the tendency to procrastinate)
- just start - don’t worry too much about perfecting or finishing anything yet
(if you don’t start then there’s nothing for you to perfect or get done. and it will never get done)
- listen to old and simple (aka non-distracting) podcasts, Youtube videos, or café/ chattering white-noise, etc. simply leave them as background noise to create an illusion of being outside your room
(bring the presence of people to you. my favorites lately have been slam poems from 2016, Mae Martin’s stages, and Awsten Knight’s crackhead podcasts)
- set timers, for both study sessions and breaks
(so that you don't overwork, burn out, or procrastinate. the Pomodoro technique works great here)
- take advantage of the comfort of your own home
(light a candle, have crunchy snacks, play loud music, review notes out loud while pacing around, wrap yourself in a blanket burrito, study on your bed if you can focus there like me, etc. basically anything you can't do in a classroom, office, or the library)
- if you miss your friends, call/ text/ facetime them, make a study group chat with them, etc.
(that is what technology is for)
- choose recreational activities/ self-care for your breaks instead of going on social media
(go on walks, make small art, play an instrument, stretch, take a nap, etc. I usually reach for my guitar, brainstorm writing ideas, or sketch very simple line art.)
- if you want to go on social media, do it during meal times - or the 15 minutes after your meals that you can’t work just yet
(it also doesn't make you feel like you’re wasting time)
- study in different rooms for a change of scenery
(dining room, living room, the patio, etc. I have an armchair next to the window that I study in whenever I need some sunlight and don’t have to write anything down. however, if you need a designated place to focus on your work, you can also use these alternative spaces as designated “relax” or “creative” place for your breaks)
- use this as an opportunity to take care of yourself
(get enough sleep, drink water, exercise, talk to your family, take your meds, be mindful of your mental health, etc.)
Feel free to add your tips. The current situation sure is unpleasant but it is unavoidable. All we can really do now is take care of ourselves, others, and try to make the best out of this.
Good luck to everyone and stay safe! My heart is with you all 💕

monday, 7 september 2020 | wrote an online criminal law semester test this evening and I think it went okay 😌 we’re currently in our second semester for the year - it’s also the final semester of my degree. I have to go back to uni this coming weekend to pack up all my stuff at my residence since there’s no use staying there anymore due to everything remaining online for the rest of the year. I have the option to move back, but decided against it because this way I will be saving some money. I am actually so, so sad about having to move everything out because I’ve been robbed of my final year at uni. we had so many plans and places to go to, but now we’ll never get to do those things. I should definitely take a leaf from the book of 2020 and live more deliberately, hesitate less and embrace every single opportunity without lame excuses from now on 🍃

spring break came and went in the blink of an eye, but it was lots of fun! met up with friends from HS, went to disneyland, and spent time with my family. I also still did some work over break that was time sensitive, but I can't really complain :)
its officially past the halfway point of the semester and i can see the finish line. ahhhh. i also realize i need to start studying more for my classes because things are getting more complex... BUT WE WILL SURVIVE

Hello my fellow academics! I hope you are all having a wonderful week. Fall break begins tomorrow which means I get to go home and catch up on all of my lacking notes! lol While I'll be taking the time to actually break I have a small to-do list for the holiday.
Databases Homework 4
I need to work on my groups worldbuilding project and have all of the pages working by Sunday. It just looks super basic rn I need to add some ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* flare *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ (If only my database team member would actually collaborate with me I could get more done.. Alas I'll figure it out.)
Accounting Assignment #idklike30thorsomething?
Programing Project 3 for C (I have a love hate relationship with this class)
Catch up on notes!!!
So relaxing busy week pretty much. To all my fellow academics I hope you have a wonderful week and fall break! Until next time *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
