I'm watching Klaus again because 'tis the season, I love that when Jesper asks about the reception you can see the exact moment that Mogens realises he has the opportunity to do the funniest thing in the history of Smeerensburg

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vi is half elf and travels the sea in search of somewhere to call home-- and ends up stranded in smeerensburg due to a bad storm.
Mogens finds them and Vi is very demanding that they help them fix their ship so they can get outta there (bc hehe Christmas related trauma that I'll get into another day)
Mogens agrees to help fix their boat, in return Vi helps him with the loads (bad back ya know?)
Let's say a lil somethin' blooms between them~

Wait-- wait wait wait--
Can. Can mogens speak saami? (Or at least know the basics?)
Bc margú HAD to have taken the ferry to get to smeerensburg-- we see jesper and Klaus had to take it to get to her village-- that just makes me wonder, does mogens speak a bit of saami? Cause how could he know where tf she wanted to go? (Unless the ferry ONLY goes from the mainland to smeerensburg-- but still)
And she can't speak or write English, so mogens must have either played a game of charades with her to know what she wanted and where she wanted to go, or, mogens can speak a little bit of saami--

I'm so glad to see someone who is still hooked up on Klaus. SO I'd like to request fluff with Mogens because the lack of anything with him is so depressing. I've searched everywhere for x readers of him and not gotten very lucky. Thanks so much and have a nice day!

(ah sorry this took me a while to answer! so i decided to do Headcannons and a One Shot since you didn’t specify what you wanted so i did both. i hope that’s alright! 😅 also i understand not being able to find any klaus content)
Mogens Fluff Headcannons + One Shot
you both met when he took you over to smeerensburg on his boat and you were very nice to him becoming his friend in the process (but could also see enemies to lovers kind of thing happening too)
after getting to know each other more y’all got really close then became more than friends
will give you his jacket or a blanket (if you’re on his boat) if you’re cold (i imagine he keeps blankets on his boat just in case)
not super clingy but can be. usually depends on his mood tho
he can be overprotective of you and very loving as well (once he warms up to you a bit more ofc)
will give you hugs and kisses when you ask or sometimes will do it randomly (i imagine he would just for comfort if he’s not alright but doesn’t want to open up about it yet)
would love to lay next to you or have you on top of him when y’all go to sleep or just cuddle. makes him feel more safe 🥺
usually would wake up before you either it’s for work or he naturally does it on his days off. very few times you would wake up before him
loves to cook with you but also likes it when he comes home from work and you’re in the middle of baking. hell sit there and watch as you’re making cookies or something “Mogens? Where did some of the cookies i just made go?” Mogens: 🤭🤫😋
loves coming home to you and being able to cuddle with someone or just have someone to talk to (i can see you being the reason why he opens up more and starts to be more comfortable around others)
he is domestic af! (he shows this when he gets more comfortable with you)
would be alright with dating anyone (let’s go gæs! i see him as pansexual)
he is such a gentleman when it comes to you but he can also be a gentleman with other people as well (is genuinely a good guy from time to time)
always checking in on you when he isn’t busy with work (i thought of the beginning of the movie when he takes Jesper to smeerensburg and after he takes him to the post office he comes home to check on you 🥹)
as a date he will take you out on the boat for a private date under the stars. he would have a picnic and a bunch of blankets ready as well along with some candles (romantic af! 😩)
since you love him for him, he would love you for you and would always remind you as you do with him ♥️
loves it when you wear his clothes. “Darling? Have you seen my—“ you: standing in the mirror with his jacket on “So that’s where it went. 😏”
would just hold you on lazy days and is very lovable with you
nicknames for him: hunny, handsome, love, hunk, etc.
nicknames for you: darling, dear, love, beautiful, etc.
{note: (y/f/bf) = your favorite breakfast food. (y/f/md) = your favorite morning drink. (y/n) = your name}
It was a crisp, winter morning in Smeerensburg . The sun was slowly peeking through the curtains of the small but cozy bedroom. Mogens stirred a little bit before opening his eyes while sitting up in bed. He looked over next to him and smiled looking at your sleeping form. Leans over to give you a quick kiss on the head then getting up from the bed making sure to not wake you up in the process. He walks out of the room and towards the kitchen. A little while later you wake up to the smell of food being made. Questioning what it could be you decided to get out of bed to go see but as you were about to get up, Mogens comes walking into the room with a tray of (y/f/bf) and a cup of (y/f/md). “Oh! Hey there sleepy head! How did you sleep?”, he said once he made eye contact with you. “Heyyyy. I slept alright. How about you? How long have you been up for?”, you replied sitting up giving him a sleepy smile. He chuckled at you setting the tray on the table next to your side of the bed then going back to his side to climb back into bed with you. “Eh not too bad. Also I’ve only been up for a little while.” You grabbed your tray of food and started eating it while Mogens takes a sip of his coffee looking at you when you hum happily at what you were eating. “Mmm! This is really good you made this??” He smiles and nods at you. “Hunny, this is really good!” “Why thank you, my dear. Glad you appreciate my cooking like how I appreciate yours.” He kisses your cheek while you blush a little. “Did you make yourself something as well?” Mogens nods and sips his coffee again. Smiling at knowing he ate, you continued to eat yourself. Both of you were taking in the peace and quiet of the morning. Taking in breaths of the fresh, morning air while enjoying each others company in silence. Once you finished your food, you set the tray down scooting closer to Mogens before wrapping your arms around his neck then kissing him on the cheek as a thank you for making you breakfast. He laughs lightly at your actions while wrapping his arms around your waist. “Is this your way of thanking me for making you breakfast in bed?” You nodded kissing him again. “How did I get so lucky finding an amazing person like you, Mogens my love?” “I should be saying the same thing about you, my dear (y/n).” You have him a loving smile before nuzzling into his chest. He gave you a kiss on the head then laid his head on top of yours. You both stayed like that for a little while before having to actually get out of bed and have to get started on what you both had to do that day.
thank you for the request! again sorry it took me some time to answer! I hope you like it! ☺️🫂

Klaus (2019) Dir. Sergio Pablos
Summary: When Jesper distinguishes himself as the postal academy's worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva , and discovers Klaus, a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care.
Commentary: Has there ever been a more perfect Christmas film? I don't think so. Klaus is a beautiful story that merges stunning animation with heart-pulling storytelling in order to deliver what can only be called a piece of art. Every character is so very lovable, the relationships between them stunning and complex, and the message of hope and friendship within the film is so valuable to both children and adults alike.
A simple act of kindness always sparks another

The decidedly unspectacular morning in Smeerensburg hadn't started off that much more differently than most others, although the exceptionally nasty weather did suggest that it was only going to get worse as the day progressed; the sun obscured by a thick, freezing fog, which dragged the already frigid temperatures down even further. Despite this fact, and with little else to do, the postman made his usual rounds as always.
Rounds, which were, as always, entirely unfruitful— at least so far as letters were concerned. Recently, the fair townspeople had begun leaving other things inside their mailboxes, such as rusty knives, assorted pieces of trash, and, even once or twice, the occasional small rodent carcass. Truth be told, Jesper couldn't say whether they were trying to threaten each other or him at this point.
Sadly, without proper postage, the troubling trinkets remained untouched. Sometimes, they were gone the next day, and sometimes, there were more. If nothing else, the experience broke up a bit of the monotony in his routine (while instilling a sense of some unappreciated paranoia on the side).
Around town, there had been talk of a storm. Later that afternoon, it had arrived.
It's still reasonably early, yet the sky is as dark as pitch. Because of this, a lantern on the makeshift desk is placed near the mailman, who's sat behind the post office's workspace. Legs crossed at the ankles and boots propped up against the edge, he gingerly picks at his fingernails with an old, discarded letter opener. Outside, heavy snow works on blanketing the island, and the wind that makes it through the cracks of the dilapidated building bounces the candle's flame around wildly. It's so bad that Jesper briefly considers just calling it a day and turning in when the front door flying open nearly extinguishes the light completely.
Before he realizes it, a yelp is startled out of him— feet hitting the ground while the letter opener is inadvertently and haphazardly tossed somewhere behind him. A moment later, an all-too-familiar form pushes its way inside.
"Heya, sport."
Mogens. Who at least has the good graces enough not to comment on the shriek prefacing this impromptu visit of his. And without giving the postman (now clutching at his own chest) time to respond, he carries right along, shaking the blizzard from his coat as he crosses the threshold. "I hope you don't mind, but I just picked up some, uh, interesting newcomers, and there's no other accommodations for 'em in town."
"Newcomers? What? No, that's not going to happen." Standing up, Jesper gives a quick outward sweep of his hands in a vague, dismissive gesture. "I'm not sure you've noticed; this is a post office, not a hotel. I'm sorry, but I can't just—"
"Great," clearly not listening, Mogens interjects, turning to address the darkness beyond the still-open door. "Come on in, fellas."
@nosomatsu, gets a starter. Signed, sealed, delivered— it's yours

"I partly surmise also, that this wicked charge against whalers may be likewise imputed to the existence on the coast of Greenland, in former times, of a Dutch village called Schmerenburgh or Smeerenberg, which latter name is the one used by the learned Fogo Von Slack, in his great work on Smells, a text-book on that subject."
The PowerMobyDick site led me to the Wikipedia page for that place and as I suspected. Klaus has a connection to it.
The 2019 animated film Klaus takes place in the town of "Smeerensburg", on a distant northern Scandinavian island, an intentional misspelling, according to producer Sergio Pablos.

(Archive) Christmas Movie of the day: Klaus (2019)
Originally Posted: December 13th, 2021 Christmas really gets the best toys when it comes to animation compared to other holidays, huh? Not only does it get proportionally more but also gets some of the higher quality shorts and movies. It's very materialistic how much they want to sell in "true" spirit of the season. So it's delightful to see one of the best movies on the front, made from an undying passion…is also a movie about altruism.
So…Santa Claus. This is not the first movie to try and talk about the origin of the story(seems people tend to forget he's inspired in Saint Nicholas) this is the first one to do so without magic involved…probably. It's also one that remembers WHY giving gifts to children is such a considerate act. It's an act of selflessness, but not the ONLY act of selflessness from the character nor the protagonist… Jesper. The dynamic between the at first spoiled man child and the brooding gentle giant is entertaining and heartwarming. Not to mention funny, they contrast so much between each other. As played as some of the tropes of this film are, they're presented magnificently thanks to a well rounded script for such a simple aesop: kindness begets kindness.
It also helps that the animation in display is out of this world. Courtesy of Spanish studio, Sergio Pablos Animation, it almost looks like it's 3D despite being hand drawn, frame by frame, old school style. Well, they had to develop some new tech in order to keep the coloring consistent It was worth it the color palette, character designs, shapes of the settings. They all make for a visual delight, ever expressive and bringing the little town of Smeerensburg to life….. as messy and rundown as it is.
I honestly don't think there's much of a downside to this film. It's cute, funny, wholesome, and still delves into the mellow side of the human experience by addressing things like loss so it isn't just sugary fluff. This is a modern Christmas classic through and through.

I was absolutely sure that I’d written a Movie Munchies review for this movie, and apparently I didn’t? I can’t find any record of it existing. I figured I’d go ahead and watch it again this Christmas season because why not?
Klaus is an animated film meant to tell an origin story for Santa Claus. We open with our protagonist, Jesper, the son of the Postmaster General who would rather spend his life in leisure wasting his family’s money. His father’s tired of that nonsense, so he sends him to the remote island of Smeerensburg as a postman and tells him that unless he sets up a successful post office (delivering six thousand letters), he will be cut off from the family fortune.
Jesper is not having a great time in Smeerensburg, which is an unfriendly backwater home to two feuding families that have hated each other since the dawn of time: the Krums and the Ellingboes. That is, until he runs into Klaus, a reclusive woodsman with a massive stash of homemade toys. When Klaus is inspired to deliver one of those toys to a child in town, children get the idea that if they write letters to Klaus, they can get toys too–and Jesper, wanting to capitalize on this, decides to help this along so he can go home.
Of course, no one counted on the side effects of this: not only does Klaus become beloved by the local children, but also the town starts cleaning itself up when the children are told that only good children will get toys. And Jesper starts realizing that maybe Smeerensburg isn’t so bad after all.
Alright, so right off the bat: what makes this movie really shine is the animation. The purpose, as described by the makers, was to make a traditionally-animated film that “picks up where traditional animation left off.” See, in the US at least (director Sergio Pablos recognizes that other countries have rich traditions of animation that are still going strong), most of the major studios switched to computer, 3D animation, and when they go back to traditional animation it’s for nostalgia or callbacks to classics. This movie is not that–it’s meant to be where traditional animation would have developed if it had been allowed to continue as the dominant art form. The result is a movie that looks really, really good–to the point that you might be surprised to find out that it’s traditionally animated.
The movie’s story does not strike me as being particularly original. I suppose that’s a result of me watching a butt-ton of Christmas specials back in the day, in which there are tons of origin stories floating around for Santa Claus. Still, the movie is good–it’s a solid telling of how Santa Claus came to be, and it weirdly doesn’t have many supernatural elements at all.
I am fond of this take on Santa Claus. It is amazing that the first time we see him in the movie, Jesper is terrified of him, because he’s a massive guy living by himself in the woods chopping wood with a giant ax. OF COURSE that’s scary if you have no context to him. Klaus is also, as Jesper points out, not at all talkative at first.
With so many shows and movies we’ve seen jolly, happy Santa. In stories like Rise of the Guardians we see badass warrior Santa. And here, we meet… gruff loner with a heart of gold Santa. I don’t know, I just find it amusing.
He is also, to me at least, just a fascinating take on Santa. He’s a man who takes joy in bringing gifts to children because he doesn’t have his own children–even though he desperately wanted them (that’s why he made so many toys to begin with). There are a few Santa Claus origin movies where he loves children, but the element of “Because he and his late wife couldn’t have any” seems fresh and interesting, and tragic in a way that I don’t get a lot.
There are a couple of things that I don’t think worked for the film. First: the romance between Jesper and Alva. It’s… not really A Thing. Their interactions never struck me as being particularly romantic. Sure, they get closer as the story goes on, but I can’t say that any of it is really strong enough to make it feel much like a romance by anything other than ‘He’s the lead man, she’s the lead woman.’ Maybe I’m just missing something, but it felt a bit forced compared to other elements.
There’s also the film’s moral that it tries to hammer in: that “one selfless deed always inspires another.” Except that’s not what happens–the children aren’t inspired to do good because they’re selfless, it’s because they want presents. Which leads to them becoming more selfless. Likewise, Jesper’s not trying to be a good person, he’s trying to get back home and his family fortune. It’s weird, because the actual message you’d get from this, that acting good regardless of motive will lead to being actually good and bringing out that side in others.
Still, I think it’s a solid and entertaining animated film. It’s funny, it’s fun, it’s cool to look at, and it’s an original Santa Claus origin story that sticks out from many others. If you want to try a new Christmas special, I think this one’s worth a try.

Character: Margu
From: Klaus
Representation: Indigenous (Sami)
Their Importance: Margu is a girl living with her family in Smeerensburg, Finland,  where two clans absolutely cannot stand each other and are at war. The protagonist Jesper Johanssen is sent to Smeerensburg to deliver deliveries people have sent out, and finds the town is miserable. After meeting Klaus (Santa Claus) and eventually helping him deliver presents to the children, the only ones who somewhat get along in the town, he makes friends with Margu, despite their language barrier, and their friendship actually changes his rudeness and narcissism for the better, and the town becomes peaceful.
Thanks to @thedisneytardblr for the write-up!

Random thoughts about mogens's past bc I am still thinking of him
I'm thinking that perhaps before he worked in smeerensburg, he was working as a fisherman, but then one day something horrible happened (idk the ship sunk lol) and he couldn't save anyone, everyone he loved was lost and he was the sole survivor--
From that day forward he kept his distance from anyone else, an unhealthy coping mechanism to avoid getting hurt ever again--
Bro def has survivors guilt

@jesper-johanssen sent: Before Jesper can catch himself, a surprised yelp echoes throughout the otherwise silent and snow-covered town of Smeerensburg, back pressed against the mailbox now positioned behind him. At first, he thinks he’s imagining the little red fox that he sights in the distance (as evidenced by the leaning forward and the squinting of eyes), standing on two legs and sporting clothes. To this end, the postman seems momentarily glued to the spot, staring and waiting to see if it vanishes again. ( Something for the crossover verse— if you feel up for it ofc! )
unprompted asks (always accepting)

Nick felt himself freezing at the sight of an unfamiliar man, an unfamiliar species. A soft frown plastered across his face as he held his hands up in defense. "I don't mean any harm, sir. I'm just trying to find my way back home." He anxiously called out to the other, his tail slightly drooping. "Do...do you know where I am?" He questioned Jesper with a hint of uneasiness and concern, his ears anxiously flickering.
