You cannot convince me that Keith likes coffee.
Sure, he’ll force it down his throat in order to stay awake, but it’s torture for him.
Shiro, bless his soul, is oblivious to this. He sees Keith chugging coffee and assumes that the smol bean wants more.
Keith end up going on a WHOLE LOT of alien coffee tasting sprees.
Why are there so many types of disgusting bean water?
Lance, on the other hand, is a whole-hearted Latino boy who grew up drinking coffee. It tastes like comfort and home to him.
But he has enough siblings to know when someone finds a drink revolting.
His niece specifically has a steady dislike of anything that has ground coffee beans in it.
Lance once helped her get rid of a dozen coffee infused cupcakes given to them by some relative they weren’t aware they even had. (Their garden produced an extra healthy yield that year thanks to the baked fertilizer they buried in the dirt.)
Anyway, the next time he sees Keith struggling to down a cup of caffeine, he snatches it right out of the guy's pale hands and dumps it right down the sink.
Keith yells at him thoroughly, but Lance can see the obvious relief on his face.
Lance shakes his head and makes Keith a new drink:
Hot chocolate complete with marshmallows, sprinkles, and a generous dollop of strawberry whipped cream.
Thank goodness Hunk keeps a fully stocked fridge.
Lance hands the sugary drink to Keith, and tries very hard not to explode at the wide-eyed wonder on Keith’s face as he takes his first sip.
The next morning Lance is woken up by a bleary-eyed Keith asking for (demanding) more hot chocolate.
And is it even possible for Lance to deny that hopeful, pleading, chocolate deprived face?
Yeah, hot chocolate mornings are pretty common.
(Lance is having a really hard time hiding his blush whenever Keith gives him a rare smile paired with a milk mustache, though.)

LOL IM SUPER UPSET AS WELL but also thanks so much. maybe i just internalized all the little clues without realizing (thanks ADHD) but thats the timeline my daydreaming brain has been working with lol and god there's just so much FLAVOR. i really like the play on how keith's grown up but in some ways still an angry kid and shiro's this leader figure yet still so young and even boyish. but funnily enough i was just thinking today if we're gonna see shiro getting topped in ttsr! LOL bb deserves it
IT'S REALLY SUCH A GREAT FLAVOR, RIGHT? And I don't mean that about my own fic LOL I mean about them in canon dshjgkasdj. And I think like, of all the things they fucked up, especially with S8, the one thing that I think stuck the landing SO well was Keith's character arc as he became mature and was able to handle the responsibility of being a leader. It's just a really great ship dynamic that you have like, the smol angry one who's a loose canon x the mature older one who carries a tremendous burden to be in charge but is actually so traumatized and vulnerable. And like, you'd think Keith would need to be rescued more but Shiro is actually sort of a damsel sometimes!!!!!! And Keith is the one saving him! Stubbornly refusing to live in a world without Shiro!
ANYWAY I've had this story pretty carefully plotted & outlined since I started it and I've always tried to keep it close to the chest and I never wanted to reveal too much before it gets dropped into the text (for example, tagging as I go and not mentioning the alien bio stuff until it came up even though I knew the whole time 🥸) BUT ALSO I FEEL TERRIBLE THAT I HAVEN'T UPDATED IT IN ALMOST TWO YEARS!!!!! I'M REALLY SORRY HONESTLY, I'VE NEVER GIVEN UP ON THIS FIC, I JUST GOT SO BOGGED DOWN WITH OTHER PROJECTS AND LIKE THE CHAPTERS TAKE SO MUCH OUT OF ME THAT EVEN WHEN I'M ACTIVELY WORKING ON IT SOMETIMES THE CHAPTERS TAKE MONTHS TO WRITE. CHAPTER 9 TOOK ME LIKE 4 MONTHS TO WRITE LOL.

shiro will be topped in chapter 12 🤧🤧🤧🤧 AS OF NOW, NO PROMISES IN CASE I REARRANGE THE OUTLINE LOL I really spent the last few months telling myself that when I got through my latest mental health crisis that I'd focus deeply on this fic because it brings me so much joy and I really want to like power through and finish it so pray 4 me that 2024 is the year I finish TTSR and that at the current rate, chapter 12 isn't posted in 2027 LMAO 😭😭😭😭

No, but in all seriousness. @silverclaw23, this is for you. My amazing friend who always dms me, no matter if I answer or not (sorry for that ;-;). Thank you for always being there. And I would like to begin this year by commemorating our friendship the same way it started, by simping unnecessarily hard for the best boi: Shiro. After mentally reviewing his story for the 100th time in my mind, thinking about how far he has grown since the first time we "met", and even more, since his birth as a character, I think there is one word that would totally suit him. A word that means to adapt to adversity, to keep fighting no matter what, to never give up. Before, he feared the storm. Now he is the storm. And though I would never stop enjoying depicting him as an edgy grumpy emo boi, the truth is the smol boi is now a big boi. And I'm proud of him.

Shiro is in love. Now he just has to say so.

“Hey, Keith. I was wondering if- if you and I, maybe…” Shiro sighs. “I like you. I really like you.”
No.
“I love you, Keith.”
“I’m in love with you. I’ve loved you forever. I can’t remember when it started, I just.” He swallows. “You’re all I think about.”
Shiro shakes his head. He tries to put on a smile.
“Keith! Wow, you look great. You always do.” Shiro does smile, then, feeling warmth in his chest at the thought of Keith’s sharp features, so handsome and soft at once, and the sinful sway of his damn hips.
“Hey, let me buy you dinner.” Shiro pauses. “Please?”
Get it together, Shirogane, he groans inwardly. It’s just Keith. But Keith has never been just anything.
“You know,” he starts again. “Even after everything we’ve been through, there’s one thing I never told you. I- I’m not sure how you’ll react. I’m hopeful, I guess— the way you look at me sometimes, I can’t just be imagining that, can I?”
Your feelings, Shiro. Not his. Focus. Shiro squares his shoulders.
“You’re so important to me, Keith. More than anyone. You’re my most important person.”
Too vague.
“I’m so proud of all that you’ve become.”
Too mentor-ly.
“C’mon, have you seen yourself?” Shiro breathes a laugh. “You’re so hot, Keith, I feel like I’m losing my mind half the time. I mean, your ass—”
Too thirsty, he decides, his cheeks starting to burn even just in the bathroom mirror. It’s all true, though. He wants to be able to say those things, too.
Deep breath.
“How would you feel about a date,” he grins, a little coy, “you and me?”
But it’s not enough.
“Marry me?”
Too much. Arguably.
“I just… I don’t know how to do this,” he admits. “Maybe in general I do, but not with you, Keith. You’re my person. It just… it’s just how it is. I don’t know how to start something that feels like it’s already ours, like it’s right here and any move I make could throw us off course, pitch us both into a ravine.” His laugh is high with tension.
Shiro studies his eyes. God, he’s nervous and it shows. Keith’s not even here yet and he’s a wreck.
But shouldn’t he be nervous? This is important. It feels like the most important thing that Shiro’s ever done.
“I don’t want anything to change, Keith, and… I want everything to change. I want my best friend. I want you in my life always. Is that okay to say?”
Yes, that.
“I want so badly to kiss you and show you everything you mean to me. Make sure you know exactly who you are to me. I- I hope you want that, too.”
Shiro hears his door whoosh open just before Keith calls his name. He hurries to straighten his hair.
“Hey, there you are,” Keith says as he walks up behind him, eyes meeting over his shoulder in the bathroom mirror. Keith’s smile is easy, comfortable. He has grown so much. Shiro treasures that he gets to be here to see it.
Shiro wants to keep him.
He wants to be selfish, to ask for something he wants. It feels sometimes like Keith really would give him anything. And maybe that’s okay?
“Shiro?” Keith’s eyes soften. He doesn’t lose the smile. It’s his, now; he’s not so easily rocked off of his axis, no longer the boy who was ready to shut down before he had any chance of getting hurt. It feels like only yesterday, and a lifetime ago.
Shiro takes courage in the steadiness Keith has found, feeling like he has had some part in that, at least. He’ll take a little credit, knowing Keith’s magnificence is truly his own.
Keith hovers there, meeting Shiro’s eyes and waiting for him to speak his mind.
It’s a weighty thing, handing someone your heart. Or it would be, maybe, if Keith didn’t already hold his.
Struggling for words, Shiro acts instead and opens his arms in invitation. Keith’s face says it all— surprised and charmed, and perhaps a little embarrassed to be so pleased by his welcome. Keith is always welcome. It’s wonderful to see that he knows it.
Chest to chest, Shiro curls around Keith effortlessly, ready to melt right into his space. Keith makes a soft, contented sound, reminding Shiro’s body and his racing heart that he has a question for him. He just… has to start somewhere.
“Hey, Keith?”
“Yeah?”
“Wanna go riding with me?”
“Now?” Keith huffs as Shiro nods against his shoulder. He doesn’t say, It’s 8am. He doesn’t say, Don’t you have meetings, Admiral? He just curls closer. “Always.”
“Good. That’s, um. Good,” Shiro babbles, joy unfurling in his chest. “There’s something I want to talk to you about.”

this is such a silly question but... how old do you envision keith to be in ttsr!? i think about this fic all day every day to the point where i'm like filling in the gaps in my head and reconstructing his entire life before meeting shiro and whatnot so yeah just. wondering how old he actually is? (((also please know you are my favorite fic writer ever. and i'm the pickiest of picky readers, so it's like you've been inside my brain! IT'S EERIE! and i'm so grateful <3 <3 <3)))

SO LIKE INSOFAR AS THEIR AGES IN CANON ARE A LITTLE FUZZY I think he's 19 in TTSR. I think I'm using the idea that in S1 Keith is 19ish and Shiro is 25ish, and I go with the idea that they met when Keith was 15ish and Shiro is 21ish. And maybe by the end of canon, with Keith's time skip, Shiro is 27ish and Keith is 23ish? I sometimes adjust that number in my mind, it's not a hill I'm gonna die on in general, but for this fic I think those are abouts the ages I'm working with. It makes the most sense to me to imagine that Shiro would be recruiting from high schools, and I was comparing to like ROTC and stuff and they typically don't accept kids under 17, but it seems like the Garrison has younger students and since it's a space exploration program and not strictly a military institution that we have some wiggle room to make up rules haha. So maybe they meet, he finishes 10th grade or whatever, then joins the Garrison?
Even though they use very obvious visual language on the show in the flashbacks to tell us KEITH IS SMOL BBY, he's gotta at least be a high school student. I also want to leave him a little time to get to know Shiro.
In chapter 4 I wrote like a lil bit of exposition just to like keep everyone on their toes and I thought it would be a fun pacing shift to just start talking about his childhood out of nowhere which is why I sketched out that overview of like his JOURNEY REALIZING HE'S GAY LOL, but in that chapter I mentioned that Shiro leaves for Kerberos when Keith is 17 and he gets kicked out of the Garrison at 18/19.
It says this RE:Keith's sexual history lol:
But at seventeen with an NCO and eighteen on Iverson’s desk and nineteen with some grad student from the bar, all he knows is that he doesn’t want to give up control.
I also really wanted to give weight to how different he would've looked to Shiro when Shiro comes back, especially leaving Earth off a breakup. And the breaking up is relevant because like, Keith has always just been this kid that he mentors and Shiro is in a committed relationship up until the very end right before his mission, so there's no reason why he'd ever see Keith as desirable. Not just that Shiro is too much of a cinnamon roll and I think he's so faithful & committed to Adam, but Keith is also so fucking immature and messy as a kid right?
When he leaves, Keith is his lil buddy that thirdwheels him & his boyfriend and sleeps on their couch sometimes, and when he comes back Keith is like this angry shell that regressed on all the lessons Shiro taught him. But he's grown and strong and violent !!!! And Shiro sees him as a grown man now! And it's surreal to him! And he feels weird about it sometimes! And when Keith is ready Shiro wants to be topped & dommed because he's so burnt out from making decisions and being in charge and being responsible for everyone's lives and it would be so nice if this violent alien-man would dick him down please!
Sorry I got off topic lol I mean, I think 19 is a nice age where like, there would be a visible difference, he'd be taller, broader shoulders, (if he were fully human maybe he'd be fully grown but I think his Galra genes are gonna keep going lol but Shiro doesnt know that)!
I don't always stick to these ages because canon is so fuzzy so I think like for all writers, readers, & enjoyers we have some space to adjust as needed when it fits the story we're trying to tell. But I think this mostly is the story I'm telling this time and like, if I haven't nailed it down explicitly in the text already you never know if I'll wiggle later or even retcon it LOL.
So anyway, the basic TTSR timeline
They meet when Keith is 15
He joins the Garrison at 16
Shiro leaves when Keith is 17
Pilot error etc happens when Keith is 18
He gets kicked out of the Garrison at some point! Do I know when in this following year? idk I didn't decide. Bonus question: Does Keith even know? Does he know what month it is? Does he know how old he is? Pilot error happens and time stops existing for him.
Shiro comes back/canon S1/TTSR begins when he's 19.
I also didn't nail a number down yet but I think he was 6 or 7 when his dad died in this. In the upcoming chapter that I haven't finished, there's an extended scene about him and his dad from when he's 5!!!!!!!!!! You didn't ask but, in general if this helps you imagine the TTSR timeline lol. :) :)
