No sirens call him tonight, at least none that matter. The only sound he's following is the racing drum of her pulse under his tongue, the soft hitching of her breath at his fingertips trailing lightly up the inside of her warm thigh. He chases it, driving them faster and harder with every kiss, every touch.

And she's not passive in this, giving as good as she gets, relishing in the grunts she elicits from him and the way that his taut muscles shift and strain underneath as she presses her fingers hard into the night's fresh bruises and wounds.

I want to feel you

she urges, letting him inside her window and between her legs.

Let me hear you

he pleads, wanting nothing but her impassioned moans to fill his head and drown out everything else.

You use each other, you both know it but it's never spoken outside of four walls. The same walls that hear the echoes of these twilight trysts after your nightly patrols, when the city is finally sleeping and safer but you're both too fired up to do anything but fuck each other into exhaustion so that you might join it. Maybe it wasn't exactly healthy, maybe there were simpler ways to rest, to feel something akin to love, but this was all you had so you both clung to it like barnacles on rocks thrashed by storm swells. And when the tide washes back out and the sun rises?

The cycle repeats.

To be honest, Winn didn’t think Kara would become Cat’s assistant.

(He wasn’t sure he’d get a job there either, but specifically working with Cat Grant… he imagined a lot of people running out of her office crying, like they’d both seen right before Kara went in for her interview. If Kara was able to stand being around her for longer than a few weeks, it would certainly be a surprise- and yet later he would find that they’d been working together for two years, and she’d not only remained in her job, but been remarkably resilient)

He wanted her to- not only because he might end up working alongside her, but because she seemed nice, and normal. She’d apologized to him when they’d bumped into each other, something that had been surprisingly uncommon over the years. And she hadn’t reacted negatively to his name, which was an extra plus.

And, okay, she was really pretty. But also he wanted to get to know her, and though he knew that working for Cat would make that difficult, he hoped he could try.

“I swear you could trip over your own shadow.” He remarked early on, when she did trip- not on her shadow, but on her way up the stairs.

Kara stared at him.

“Why?”

“I don’t know. Are you nervous?”

She looked down at her shoes, before gathering her things up and looking over at him.

“Yeah. Yeah, that’s it. I mean, Cat Grant- she’s really intimidating, right?”

“Careful.” Winn said, looking up at the security cameras. “Just kidding. I don’t think she’s watching the stairwell with her wall of monitors.”

Kara nodded.

“I’m sure she’d let us know if she was.” She said. “Why are you taking the stairs, anyway?”

“I could ask the same thing. But I just… wanted to prolong the errand I was running. I thought I would be alone, and could take some time to breathe, before starting on the next thing.”

“Yeah. That’s kinda it for me too.”

“Good. But… I don’t mind this. Taking the stairs with you.” Winn assured her.

Kara smiled at him.

“Me neither.” She answered.

Do you want to hang out after work? He almost asked. But they hadn’t talked since before the interview, that was way too soon. He would have more chances to ask, eventually.

(He never guessed how many, in the years to come)
